1 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/28/2021

While driving along the highway about 70-75 mph I started to hear a knocking sound, I began to slow down and the noise continued every time I accelerated. There were no dash lights displayed the entire time. All of a sudden I hear a bang and had complete engine failure. The oil was changed within the last three months and im pretty sure the engine block is cracked. The dealership is investigating and turns out that my car is under recall, so hopefully they will replace the engine at manufacturer cost.

4 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/11/2021

I purchased this vehicle in 2016 and received free oil changes through the dealership I purchased it from. I noticed that in between the recommended 7500 mile oil changes that I had to add oil or get another oil change prior to the recommended time frame as it seemed to burn oil. I took it to a shop about 1 1/2 years ago but they couldn't find anything wrong and no lights on the dash were on. Just a few weeks ago I noticed a burning smell and checked the oil again and it was low so I added 4 quarts. I then noticed a knocking sound the next time I drove it and took it right to a shop down the street. They said if was a bad bearing and that I needed a new engine! it has 130,000 miles and the only problem I have had is this oil/engine issue. I owe $7000 and an engine will cost $5000 plus labor. Why are the engines failing on the 2014 sante fe's??? I would definitely like answers.

8 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/24/2021

I was driving along and out of nowher, heard a loud knocking noise from the engine. No engine lights were displayed. I took it to a mechanic and he said I needed a new engine. He thought it was strange to need a new engine at only 53k miles, so he said I should check with the dealer for any defects. We took it to the dealer and they confirmed the noise was caused by rod bearings being prematurely worn and it in fact needed a new engine. We had always taken it for regular oil changes and confirmed this with receipts. They said there was a recall of this engine problem of the same year and make but our SUV was a limited and only the sport model was included in the recall. They said they would check with Hyundai to see if they would cover it considering the recent issues with this model and year of car. They came back and said they would only cover a portion of it and wanted us to pay $3300. We are now checking with another dealer and have been without a car for over a week. It seems crazy that we would have to pay for a known manufacturing defect.

10 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/03/2021

Vehicle is 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe sport with 133,000 miles. I have documented proof of regular maintenance. Vehicle was getting 32-33 mpg. Engine suddenly started knocking and died within a few miles. Repair shop said Hyundai extended warranty from 100,000 to 120,000 for this issue. My car has 133,000 and is not included in the 2011 to 2014 recalls. Engine was replaced with rebuilt hyandai engine. Immediately issues starting occurring such as unexpected acceleration, and now it won't accelerate to 55 mph. There is no power and the new engine is knocking. At nearly $8,000 out of my pocket I am again without a vehicle for weeks on end. I am an essential worker with a newborn child and I cannot risk a break down while enroute the 37 miles one way to work or at any other location. Another acquaintance has a 2016 sonata and her engine is also making a knocking sound. Please include the newer models on the engine recall as they are doing the same. Please advise what recourse I have for a reliable vehicle. I should have been able to get another 150,000 miles at least out of my Santa Fe and it could die a normal death as opposed to a quick death due to engine failure. The vehicle was operating on the highway when the engine failure and other engine issues have occurred.

12 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/18/2020

At only 78,754 miles the engine exhibited a loud knocking sound that increased in frequency as the engine rpms and decreased in frequency as engine rpms decreased. Hyundai said the entire engine needs replacement. It sounds just like the problem reported in the 2012 Santa Fe recall. Since I'm considered the second owner (vehicle was originally leased by someone else), the warranty was not honored.

13 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

I have a 2004 hyundia Santa Fe and the engine started with loud knocking sounds in my driveway. I had it toll to avondale earnhardt hyundia's dealership. The diagostic was "found engine knock can be heard at bottom end of engine. Failure in rod bearings is causing excessive noise in bottom end. Engine required" replacement. The car has 125,000 miles which exceeds the 100,000 powertrain warranty. However, my engine failure is the same as the current "engine failure recalls (theta ii engines) caused by manufacturing processes. Except the 2004 hyundia Santa Fe was not included on the recall list. I spoke and submitted twice a compliant to hyundia customer care department to replace my engine and was denied an engine replacement. I have been without a car since November 20, 2020. Today, customer care department notified me by phone of the second rejection. I am an elderly woman and retired, so finances are limited. I feel that the engine should be replaced because that the "fair thing to do". The engine should not have failed so early in its life-cycle. I would appreciate your review and a solution to this problem. Perhaps a recall on my vehicle.

15 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/19/2020

The engine started making a knocking noise on start up but would quickly quiet. After a week the noise increased to knocking on start up and until I shifted through gears 1-3. After a few days, while driving 50 mph on a rural but high speed road the power to the gas pedal stopped working and my speed decreased without my control. After pulling over I was only able to accelerate slowly, 5-10 mph. I pulled into a gas station and the battery light flickered twice then disappeared. I turned the vehicle off and back on and the power to the gas pedal was functioning as normal. The knocking sound was much worse after this incident. I took the vehicle to the dealer and have been quoted for a full engine replacement. Regular oil changes have been completed during my ownership of the vehicle. The dealership indicated no oil leak but declared a low level of oil remaining.

16 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Was driving my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe when out of no where it started knocking loudly, took it to a mechanic and they said I needed a new motor it had 146k on it. Replaced the motor with a brand new motor with only 7 miles on it 2 weeks later the same thing happened, knocking noise and motor seizing up. It's my understanding that the Hyundai manufacturer should replace the 2014 sante fe like they did the sonota's and sante fe sports cause this vehicle has the same problems!.

17 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/14/2020

Same thing thats happened in 90% of the other complaints. . . Driving, loud knocking sound and engine and power steering died on highway traveling 70mph. . . You're obviously very aware as I have just sat through and read the complaints all having the same issue with the engine some dying at 58,000 miles which is unheard of. I work at a mechanic shop. This is obviously a manufacturer defect and you refuse to take responsibility and are allowing people to drive around in unsafe cars. . We own 3 Hyundais right now. My grandparents own 4 themsleves. . . We are all going to sell them as fast as we possibly can and will never buy from your thieving dealerships again. Shame as we've been a Hyundai family for 30 years but you're all about greed now and failing to take responsibility or reimburse all of these families who are out of vehicles during this pandemic truly shows what you're company is all about. Dont buy from Hyundai if you're reading this. They'll recall something with the same issue as yours but claim it's a year behind or ahead of yours and refuse to cover it. . Even with 238 complaints absolutely zero responsibility. Just read the complaints yourself.

19 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/16/2020

I was driving through the highway at 80mph and I just lost power. Check engine and oil warning lights came on. When I turned the car on to exit highway I heard a knocking sound coming from engine. Basically I had to have it towed. I found out the next day about a recall 162 about engine failure for this model. I contacted Hyundai USA because I purchased the vehicle in the us and after 5 days not hearing from them I decided to call back only to be told that the case has not been handled yet. So now I am being told that they cannot do anything for me. I am left with a recall that is not my responsibility. Way to go Hyundai.

20 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/11/2020

Was driving my 2012 Santa Fe on rt 565 when the car started making a loud banging sound in the engine and the car just died. I was able to roll the car off to the shoulder before causing an accident. I had the car towed to my house where a mechanic looked at it and informed me the engine was shot and told me about this web site so I could see that there are multiple incidents similar to the one I experienced. I purchased this vehicle new from sussex Hyundai it currently has 108,000 miles I plan on going in tomorrow and speaking with them. With all the engine complaints and scenarios that could have resulted in accidents listed on this web site you would think that NHTSA or Hyundai would implement an engine recall. Hoping the dealer will go to bat for me and contact Hyundai America to fix my engine.

21 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/04/2020

While driving the vehicle at highway speed approx. 60mph engine began to make a knocking sound in the engine bay. Had the vehicle towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer and began filing a complaint to Hyundai USA. After 2 weeks of the vehicle sitting there and no word back I called the dealer to find out if it had been diagnosed. No one had looked at it! next day we got a call stating motor was blown up and a cost to repair would be $15,720!!!!! this vehicle was and has been very well maintained with regular oil changes etc. ( verified by dealer oil level was good ) oil light was not on nor did any warning lights illuminate during any of this. This is our second Hyundai that we have owned with an engine failure ( last vehicle had been recalled for engine. ) and this will be our last Hyundai.

On 8/11/19, car would not accelerate normally after proceeding from a red light on a state highway, check engine light came on and shortly after engine started making knocking noises that became louder after a few miles. 24 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/10/2019

Nhtsa representative, I am writing to inform the NHTSA that other Hyundai's engines outside of Hyundai's 2012 and 2013 engine recall are experiencing the same engine failure due to rod knock, which poses a severe safety risk and that Hyundai is not helpful in any way when reporting this. Our vehicle which failed on us 40 in the smoky mountains is a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe VIN # #5xyzgdab3cg140990. On April 10th at 6 pm while traveling on us 40 in the smoky mountains near chandler, north carolina in our 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe towards our home in downers grove, IL. , we began to hear a knocking in the engine at any speed greater than 65 mph. Since we were traveling on the highway with no place to safely pull off so we slowed the vehicle to 60mph however the knocking sound became worst and then the car would not go above 55 mph without a terrible loud knocking. This was of course very scary and unsafe. With hazard lights on, we were able to exit us 40 in chandler nc only able to do <30 mph and the vehicle died in entrance of the sunoco gas station in chandler north carolina. During this whole time no check engine or any emergency light warned us of the engine malfunctioning and the safety risk we had encountered with the engine dying. The Santa Fe was towed to the Hyundai dealership of asheville, nc and dropped off at 11pm where it was found to have bad rod knock and needing a new engine. Hyundai should be held responsible for their engines that put their customers at risk and 2012 Santa Fe engine should be on the current engine recall for engine failure due to rod knock. Several mechanics at various shops have stated this is happening regularly to Hyundai's engines. Please assist us in holding Hyundai responsible and modifying the engine recall to correctly encompass our model (2012 Santa Fe engines) before serious harm comes to someone.

25 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/28/2019

2012 Hyundai Santa Fe purchased at 89,000 miles from the dealer with clean carfac. Maintained with oil changes regularly, every 2-3k miles. No issues. Went to start the car 90 days after purchasing it and the engine failed, rumbled loudly and shut off. Engine lights came on. Mechanic told me it was tension timing chain & replaced it for $2,000. 2 months later (now) the same thing is happening, only now it's a loud knocking noise and blue indigo smoke coming out of the exhaust. I have not even driven this car for 6 months and I do not drive very often (live and work in the city). This same engine is in the 2013-2014 which have officially been recalled, so we all need to place a lawsuit on Hyundai for the 2012 Santa Fe! my mechanic told me this engine is defective and the manufacturer did not seal the oil pan properly so the oil leaks out constantly while the car is idle. I was told it needs a new engine, and am currently fighting with Hyundai corporate to get them to replace it free of charge! can anyone help!.

26 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/22/2019

Engine starting making a knocking noise. Brought into dealer and was told it had complete engine failure due to broken bearing and I would need a new engine. Denied request through warranty. Only around 43000 miles are on the car. Hyundai informed me it was denied due to oil not being changed properly as evidenced by two areas of sludge on the inside of the hood of the engine. Service records brought to Hyundai showing oil was changed within the 7500 mile as indicated on Hyundai's website and owners manuel.

27 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/01/2019

A recall was issued for this make and model for debris from the manufacturing operation that remained in the engine. The engine displayed the symptoms of this issue through a metallic knocking noise which increased as the rpm increased. The Hyundai dealership in Lincoln nebraska reviewed the vehicle and subsequently released the car back to me. Prior to this recall work at sid dillon, the vehicle did not consume oil. After the recall work the vehicle immediately started to consume oil at the rate of one quart every 500 to 600 miles . The sis dillion dealership in conjunction with Hyundai refuses to address this issue. Additionally, the knocking noise from the engine continues to concern me relative to the engine locking up and creating a stall condition while still in motion.

28 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Took the vehicle to the dealership (Hyundai of cool springs, franklin, TN) for service. After several days was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. 31 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/31/2018

While driving on the interstate, I noticed a rattling/knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle, under the hood. The noise kept getting louder, specifically as the vehicle accelerated. I noticed that the rpms would increase, with no increase in speed & even a decrease in speed. During this time the car was using cruise control at approximately 70 mph. As I noticed the knocking noise getting louder, I tapped the brakes & the vehicle's speed dramatically decreased to approximately 40 mph. I tried to speed the vehicle up & the rpms increased significantly, while the vehicle speed did not. I then put my flashers on to signal there was an issue with the vehicle & the check engine light came on, along with other service lights on the dashboard. The vehicle's steering capacity was tight & the ride became extremely bumpy as the speed decreased. After abruptly stopping on the shoulder of the interstate, the vehicle started to smell like something was burning. I could smell this in the cabin of the vehicle & the noticed there was smoke coming from the hood of the car. The engine shut off, but then began to try & turn on, with the lights starting & the start up musical sound playing. It would turn on & off 3 - 4 times, so I then removed the key from the vehicle, stepped out & backed away. The smoke, thankfully, seemed to dissipate after 20 minutes. Fire & police arrived on the scene & did not find any fire, but did smell the burning smell I noticed in the cabin of the vehicle. Unfortunately, we never could get the vehicle's engine to crank again & ended up having it towed back to our local Hyundai dealership.

32 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/17/2018

33 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/23/2018

Going approximately 70 miles an hour on the highway and the car just shuts down. After coasting to the side of the road I tried to restart the car to which it turned over but was knocking so I immediately shut down the car and called a towing company but I was 300 miles away from home on the highway when the incident occured. After getting the vehicle home and taking it to the Hyundai dealership I was told that it fit the criteria of a recall 17v226000 NHTSA however if there was any sign of sludge in the motor during inspection they would not replace or fix the issue. I was also told the only fix they offered for the recall was to change the oil and filters if the car wasnt experiencing the knocking noise. I just had my car oil changed and filter changed 2 months before the incident and have traveled less than 1500 miles. The car currently has 90600k miles.

34 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/31/2018

Driving down the tollway at 75 mph the engine made a knocking sound and then completely shut down. My husband was able to coast if off the tollway . It was towed to the dealership where they came to the conclusion that the engine blew and recommended getting a new engine. However, with it being just at 102k miles its right outside of warranty. The dealership is telling me corporate wont cover it but I have filed a formal complaint with Hyundai corporate and they are in the process of reviewing the claim. After reading all of the other horror stories, I believe they will come back with some excuse. This has got to stop. They said it would be 3-5k just for a new engine alone. . . This is outrageous.
