Hyundai Santa Fe owners have reported 607 problems related to service brakes (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Santa Fe based on all problems reported for the Santa Fe.
The brakes and rotors need to be replaced every 3-6 months. They have been fixed at least 4 times under warranty. Every time I take the car in I get asked if I drove through the mountains because they are fried. This vehicle has never been in the mountains because I fear what will happen if it really were driven through the mountains. However, no excessive braking occurs to cause them to be ruined every 3-6 months. I am at the point I’m curious if automatic braking is causing it to heat up and burn them. The incident below is the last time I had them replaced. I’m currently looking to sell the vehicle because of the number of times I’ve had to go in and get them replaced.

Driving on a slight upgrade, lost power and smoke started to come out of the vents and from under the hood. Had no brakes and by the time we were able to drift to a stop, the engine compartment was on fire. There was no warning lights. Witnesses saw fire under the car while we were coming to a stop. The car and all contents were totally consumed. Following some research on NHTSA VIN decoder we found that this car has the same engine (gdi theta ii) that has been involved in many fires and is involved in class action suits. Even though this car has the same engine, it was never recalled. That may indicate that there are other cars out there that may have the same problem but have not been informed.

On [xxx}, the abs module failed. I did not know this until it was diagnosed by pope automotive, lubbock, TX on 9/27/24. They discovered there was a recall 205 related to this issue. They started a case with Hyundai in regard to this: #[xxx]. I was in contact with my case worker who told me to have it towed to a Hyundai dealership. I did and it is currently at gene messer Hyundai, lubbock, TX. Messer diagnosed the vehicle and stated the abs module is not related to the recall, because the recall work was done on 2/25/24 in alabama. I contacted messer service dept and spoke with victoria. She stated that perhaps only the fuse was replaced, but not the abs. We need a copy of the invoice from Feb 2022, in order to know. I called carvana, where I purchased the vehicle on [xxx] (only weeks from when the service was done). I was told it has been too long, they don't have the record. Serra Hyundai trussville, al said I'd have to get the information from carvana, they cannot provide it to me. I called carvana again today. I spoke with a different person and was told it would take 24-48 hours to send me the copy. On this invoice, we will find the abs module was replaced. There is no logical reason for it to go out in just 2. 5 years. Perhaps it was a bad part. I feel it is unfair that I am being held responsible for it's replacement. If the abs module was not replaced as part of the 205 recall, I would expect it replaced. There were several model years included in the recall and hundreds of thousands of vehicles affected. There was also a class action lawsuit. There was a period of time where Hyundai parts were not quality or reliable. This has been a very stressful situation requiring many phone calls and research. It should have been a simple solution - replace the defective abs module at no cost to me. I have been without my vehicle now since [xxx]. It is the only transportation for a family of 4. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

All the abs, traction control lights come on at various times. They will stay on for hours to days and then go off. I asked Hyundai to fix it, even took a pic with me when I was there last, and they said there was nothing wrong with it. It still does it. I don't know if anything is actually wrong, a bad sensor, or what. It has been doing it for 2 years. The speed of the vehicle does not matter. When it comes on, it can be from start or during driving. Sometimes restarting will solve it. Not always.
My complaint is the dealership that said had completed the recall on my brake systems according to both your and state records was not completed. They gave me a service notice stating the work was done. Since then the braked have continued to act up and the vehicle as a strange acceleration problem. The dealership is don wood Hyundai in athens ohio.
Driving down interstate at 70 mph and car started to brake while foot on gas pedal. Would not go…red brake alert came on. Luckily no other car in left lane and pulled off to side of road. Car would not drive. Called tow truck.

The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at approximately 65 mph when she depressed the brake pedal to slow for a vehicle that had passed and changed into the lane she was driving, their vehicle was shuddering. The contact stated that as soon as she stopped depressing the brake pedal the shuddering stopped. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the shuddering when the brake pedal was depressed was intermittent, but was recurring and was occurring at any speed. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the pads and rotors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 18,756.
None.
Brake rotors warped. Beginning at approximately 5k miles, the steering began exhibiting a juddering upon applying braking. Over time, the juddering became more pronounced. At approximately 15k miles, I took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer confirmed that the brake rotors were warped. The defective brake components put my safety at risk, as well as the safety of my passengers and others traveling on the road by impairing my ability to safely stop the vehicle and impairing my ability to safely operate the vehicle while braking. There were no safety lights or warnings. I am aware that there has been a technical service bulletin for this exact issue for this model/year vehicle. Neither Hyundai nor the dealer ever altered me to the possibility that the brake rotors might warp due to defective components. Hyundai has thus far refused to cover the full cost of repairs, totaling over $1,400. 00.
Driving on the highway my Hyundai begins braking and cannot be stopped even though the automatic braking system was disengaged. Dealt with the dealerships and they all provide no help at all. I have brought this to two different dealerships and they just have excuses. This is a known issue with Hyundai and needs to be addressed.

I purchased my 2023 Santa Fe brand new off the show room floor in Jan 2024. After about 6k miles when braking on the highway the entire vehicle would shudder and shake including the steering wheel. I took it into the dealership where I was informed this is a known issue with this year/make/model with the rotors. They claimed they would turn the rotors but if the issue persists they would replace them. About 2k miles later (apx 2 months) the shuddering happened again. So I made an apt to get them replaced where the new service tech tried to tell me again this is a known issue but now I would be responsible for a $250 replacement of the rotors. I refused to pay as they are within the 12k or 1 year warranty and they refused to replace them. That service tech also said the day prior he had to deliver that news to 4 other patrons about the replacement of their rotors. I feel extremely unsafe in this vehicle and the issue is still not fixed as I have a claim in process with the manufacture directly. The claim was put in on 12/7/24 where I was told I would be contacted within 2-3 business days by a manager due to my claim being escalated. It is now 12/15/24 and still no contact from Hyundai. The vehicle shuddering is increasingly worse and worse and I feel very unsafe in this SUV.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle lost automotive power and the vehicle failed to stop while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was allowed to decelerate and come to a stop. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the alternator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the engine was previously replaced and the contact was concerned that the warning lights on the instrument panel might not properly display because the check engine warning light had not illuminated during the previous failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000.
I parked my 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe in a hospital parking garage on the morning of July 30, 2024. I was getting ready to leave after my doctor’s appointment. I slowly reversed my car and hit a pillar behind me. As I put the car into drive to come forward slowly, the car accelerated forward at a very fast speed. I took my foot off of the gas and kept pressing the brake pedal, but the car kept speeding forward on its own and I crashed headfirst into a concrete wall. The impact cracked the concrete barrier on the outside of the parking garage. The air bags deployed, causing fractures in my sternum and l1 vertebrae. This accident occurred near the elevators/stairs and cars were all around. If a person had been walking in my path to get to their car, he/she would have been severely hurt or killed. I was able to frantically steer the accelerating car into a handicap parking space and crash into the concrete wall, thus avoiding other cars. If that space was not available, my car could have crashed into another car with people inside. We were just told that the car is going to be totaled. If necessary, it could be inspected before that happens. I thought that I was going to die… the car was out of control. I do not want this to happen to others with this type of car…or put others in its path at risk.

The car completely shut off in the middle of driving and I was unable to put the car into park or use the emergency brake and hazard lights because all of the controls are electronic. The lack of mechanical safety features is a danger.

The park break keeps turning on by its self, rather I'm driving or sitting at a light or stopped at a stop sign. Putting me and my passengers as well as the other motorist on the road at risk for collision. There is an orange epb light that never goes off that came on about two months ago, and the emergency park break started being engaged without me engaging it after last driving the car, every time I get back in the car. A red park break light comes on and continously blinks and that has been happening for the last month and a half. The breaks lock and I have to keep pushing the park break disengage button and turning the car off several times to get it to disengage at some point, while in traffic. I haven't had this problem checked out yet, because it is so costly, but I plan to.
Ani-lock brake system unable to get an appointment to get the part repaired have been trying for over a month to bring the car in & was told that there was a worldwide glitch & the dealership was unable to get the parts to fix the problem.
This complaint relates to recall campaign 251 from Hyundai, specifically the abs control module. I own an affected 2013 Hyundai sante fe sport. I bought it used in October 2023, and it driven by my minor child. While the affected components have yet to cause a problem, the mere fact that this vehicle could start on fire concerns me. Moreover, Hyundai has the wherewithal to fix the problem, rather than simply replacing a fuse and hoping for the best. As a father, it is my privilege and responsibility to protect and provide for my family. In order for me to do this, I would like NHTSA to throw the full weight of their influence on Hyundai and insist that they fix this problem. The very least they could do is provide a suitable vehicle as a loaner until my vehicle is fixed. Better yet, they can buy this vehicle and I will use that money to buy the same, or nearly same, type of vehicle from them. That is a win-win situation in my opinion. I am a retired state trooper and for over half of my career I conducted numerous traffic homicide investigations and accident reconstructions. I lost count of how many civil trials I testified in. I was considered a subject matter expert in several areas, including vehicle equipment failure. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen. More importantly, if this issue is not fixed, people are going to die because of Hyundai's malfeasance. Thank you for your time. I am committed to following through on this and will be watching very closely how both Hyundai and nhsta respond to this campaign.
Forward attention warning camera continues to malfunction stating camera is obscured even when not. If cruise is allowed to be engaged the camera will randomly decide it doesn’t detect your face and will hard brake to stop the car. This has happened multiple times to me, narrowly avoiding collision from behind. Hyundai refuses to address the issue because their technicians can’t duplicate the issue so they state the car is safe to drive. Camera becomes hot to the touch much like an overheating cell phone. At times camera can be covered completely and will not detect it’s obscured. This camera is a big safety hazard rather than providing any safety. Someone will die if this is not addressed-the manufacturer doesn’t seem to care to fix the issue. I’ve reported this to the dealership from the 1st week I’ve owned the car. My car has been at the dealership for this issue almost half of the time I’ve owned it. I have seen many others with the same issue in Hyundai forums-their issues have always been dismissed as not a safety issue by Hyundai as well. How can a car that will brake from a high speed or any speed for that matter be safe-just because it “thinks” you aren’t looking forward but are looking forward.

When placed in "park" the vehicle's brakes did not engage, which allowed the vehicle to roll backwards when I exited the vehicle. I was able to reproduce the problem again and I recorded a video showing the problem. When pressing "park" on the electronic shifter, the dashboard displays that the video is in "park". However, the brakes are not engaged as evidenced by the vehicle rolling backwards when I take my foot off the brake. After reproducing the issue a couple times (~ 10 minutes later) and documenting the issue with a video, the check engine light eventually came on and the dashboard displayed: "park malfunction. Engage parking brake when parking vehicle. " which quickly changed to the warning message: "shifter system malfunction! service immediately" the vehicle would no longer let me place it in "park" and it remained on in "accessory mode" and I was unable to turn off "accessory mode" since the vehicle could not be placed in park. However, neither of these error messages appeared the 3-4 times I was able to place the vehicle in "park" and then observe it roll back. The vehicle has been towed to northwest Hyundai for inspection/repair. >> how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? the car rolling uncontrolled is a huge safety hazard to anyone that happens to be in the path of the car. It is also a huge safety hazard to any occupants that might remain in the vehicle when the driver exits after placing it in park. >> has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? not yet. The service error that appeared prevented the car from being placed in "park". However, I was able to capture a video of the problem. >> were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, there were no error messages of any kind.
When we received the notification about the anti-lock brake system fuse recall, we called our nearest dealer (larry h. Miller Hyundai) to make an appointment and found out we had to wait almost four weeks to be seen. When it finally was our appointment day, we brought the car in and we found out that they could only test to see if we needed the anti-lock brake system fuse. We of course failed and were told that they ordered the part and would call when it was available within 2-3 days. Five days went by and we never heard back so we called them to find out what was happening with the part. The service agent let us know that since Hyundai only allocates five of these parts to them per day, they have to inform customers as they were seen by the dealership. Which was different from what we were told initially. We then asked, how long would we have to wait and they said at least three to four weeks before we were called that the part was available to us. We waited a month just for the appointment, now we have to wait another month just for the part and possibly another month for another appointment just to have the part put on our car. We always assumed when there is a recall, your car would be fixed right away. Never have we had to wait for a part especially when its for a recall. Its ridiculous that Hyundai only gives five parts for this recall, when it affects so many cars to each dealer.
I was driving going around 50 and put on my brakes after that the abs light epb light and cruise control lights all came on and my car wouldnt stop unless I preessed very hard on brakes. And other lights on my dashboard came on then the next day I was driving to work and almost wrecked and my car wouldn't stop I had it towed in to cooks automotive and the seals had exploded on the master and cylinder and the booster. Also the abs motor would not turn off and my cruise control went out I paid over 1300. 00 to get my car fixed but the mechanic informed me that it should have not happened and there was a recall on my year Hyundai. Now after almost paying and loosing a weeks worth of work because of malfunction in the vehicle.
I stepped on the brakes and all the aeb warning collision warning went on and I turn my car off and it still sounds like something is running.
My 2014 Santa Fe was scheduled for a recall 251 abs brake failure-fire hazard. Nhtsa and Hyundai both advised owners of vehicles associated with this recall to park away from structures and recommended the vehicle not to be driven. Hyundai did not have a solution for roughly 6 months. During that time I kept my vehicle parked and away from structures as recommended for that 251 safety concern. I periodically would start the car and let it run to keep it from failing. I went through an entire winter season waiting for a solution a recall. My car just sat. Extreme weather and susceptible to dirt as it sat outside parked. Finally in may 2024 I was informed that Hyundai had a solution and parts were ready for the 251 recall repair. Well the day I was scheduled to bring my vehicle in to be repaired I went out and attempted to start the vehicle but could not. I tried to jump the battery and it still wouldn’t start so I called the dealer and told them that I couldn’t get the vehicle started. They would not provide a tow so I rescheduled the appointment and I called a tow service the next day. Tow came and checked the battery. The battery was fine. They jumped the battery and the vehicle turned on. The vehicle to a local dealer and they repaired the recalls. The vehicle was driven to the dealer that week. My vehicle’s recalls were completed and I picked up the car a week later. All of a sudden when I went to start the car it would not turn over. I stalled in the lane of travel and avoided a collision. I called a private tow again, towed to the same dealer that did the recall. Engine light came on and they were able to determine that the crank position sensor failed as to the reason for stalling and intermittent starting. $600 later they repaired it. I left and the next day my car wouldn’t start again. I associated this with the 251 recall and wear as it sat dormant for too many months. Hyundai refused to provide goodwill or reimbursement for the crankshaft repair.
Complete failure of brake system. After the vehicle parked, a significant puddle of brake fluid formed under the rear axle area (mid between rear wheels. It appears that a break line failed. An internet search revealed that canada has issued a recall regarding corrosion of brake lines on this vehicle. Extremely dangerous situation. Fortunnatley, the failure happened when driving in a residential neighborhood at speeds less than 25 mph.

While driving on the highway loss of power and all the light on the info area lit up had to pull over on shoulder and shut off car and restart. And on two separate occasion while on low speed local road brake pedal locked up and I could not stop the car using the brake it was like it was press down already and I was unable to stop.
Unknown issue, but the car has auto braked 2x on the interstate going 65mph. No cars were around me nor any objects in the road. It stated auto braking and sensors going off. Resolved itself within 60 seconds, but did almost cause me to be rear ended because a tractor trailer was quickly approaching me.

1) what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I tried to park in the parking space next to it by making a slight right turn. As soon as I stepped on the brake to park, the car began to rush forward. I noticed again and again that my foot was slamming on the brakes, but the car didn't stop. My car went over the ledge between the parking lot and the store, slammed into the pillar of the building on the left, smashed all the glass in the dance studio, and hit the wall on the right before coming to a stop. It took six seconds from rushing forward to into the store. 2) how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I must have been severe injured if the car didn't stop by hitting a right-side wall of the store. And if there were people, I was not able to avoid casualites. 3) has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? no, the car was towed and reviewd by car insurance. Car insurance informed that th e car will be total loss. No information about reproducing the issue 4) has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no 5) were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, that was suddenly occured 6) request: I want NHTSA to investigate my car of sudden unintended acceleration. I would like to get edr, x-ray of pcb board of electrical central unit(a. K. A ecu) managing brake and accelerator and car manufacturer's reliability sign-off report of the ecu board. I have a security footage taking the accident moment. I failed to upload the video. If you want, please let me know. Will send the video file with NHTSA.

I have a Hyundai 2013 Santa Fe sport 2. 0t. I parked the car in the middle of my cement driveway. I went into my home for a moment to get my stanley water bottle. When I walked back to the car, the engine compartment was on fire. I had 2 fire extinguishers and attempted to put out the fire by to no avail. My daughter immediately called 911 to report the fire. The fire department came and it took about 8-10 fireman to put the fire under control. I have owned all types of cars for the past 40-years. I have never seen a car go up in flames and burn to the ground in about one minute. Had I parked my car in the garage my entire house would have burn down while potentially killing my entire family. I called my insurance company (geico) to advise them of the fire and asked them to contact Hyundai about the matter. Geico said its not their responsibility. I'm having difficulty contacting Hyundai to report this serious fire before some other family gets killed. I never was notified about any type of dangerous recall with the entire car burning down. I will try to contact Hyundai again tomorrow morning (April 18). Please help me with this matter as Hyundai must be held accountable for this fire almost killing my entire family. More importantly I wish to help prevent a similar situation for another family in the future. Thank you, joseph fradelos (917-922-6675 or jfradelos@gmail. Com).
I just got Hyundai SUV last December and already cause problem with engine and abs, after I found out that it is recalled a while ago. First abs, I was going to fix that but all attention to me is engine light then found out it is high pressure fuel pump then burning oil that I smelled something isn't right. I feel it's not safe to drive and I spoke to mechanic, he told me take it back to dealership that they gave me a lemon Hyundai. . I talked to the dealership mechanic shop and never tell me anything how much for high pressure fuel pump? so I already saw my SUV problem and I decided to check website for Hyundai recalled, that what I had right now. . It's only 6 years old and only 90,000 mileages on that SUV. That smell is very odd and it will cause engine fire. .
