3 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2020

While driving on a busy interstate at speed (approx 65mph) on 9/26/20, the engine abruptly shut down. There was no warning, the vehicle was traveling straight. The vehicle was taken to the only Hyundai dealership in the area and inspected/ diagnosed 9/29/20. The dealer stated that the engine had seized and must be replaced. The estimated cost to replace (with a used engine with 40% more miles) was 25% higher than the replacement value for the vehicle. The dealer representative said the vehicle was not covered by safety recall 15v-568 relating to 2012 Hyundai Sonata's with the 2. 4l engine. The recall does not reference any specific model and only discusses the failure of the engine which is common across hybrid and non-hybrid models. The vehicle has only 78,000 miles at the time of the engine failure. Engines should not fail this early, unless there is a manufacturing defect. Which it seems there is a very well known defect to this very engine that results in this very outcome. Except for some unknown reason the known failure with the same engine in a hybrid model is not covered by the recall.

4 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2019

Under normal driving conditions, the car jolted and something didn't feel right on the right front side of the car. I was able to pull the car off of a 4 lane highway and into a parking lot. I discovered motor oil all over the inside of the engine bay and in the right wheel well. Upon inspection by two different mechanical shops and my insurance company, a hole was found in the engine. The vehicle has 90,017 miles on it. It has been indicated this is a manufacturing defect that would lead to engine failure and a hole in the engine. Hyundai is claiming that this is not covered under the theta ii engine recall and have been extremely slow to assist. I am the second owner of this vehicle. I purchased the vehicle in June of 2017 with approximately 39,500 miles on it. I have changed oil with synthetic oil every 7500 miles which is the manufacturer's recommendation. There was no warning, no warning lights illuminated, etc. Prior to the engine failure.

5 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2019

I was driving on a highway and my car simply stopped accelerating and began to shut off. How does a car just die in the middle of driving?! this is a serious safety hazard that needs to be addressed. I barely made it over to the side of the road to get out of the way of traffic. Nearly got hit by a car!! I was absolutely terrified that I was going to get hit because I was unable to move my car. Unknown reasoning for failure, but I believe this to be an engine malfunction or issue with the alternator. I am now aware of a recall on that indicates engine failure would result in vehicle stall, increasing the risk of crash!!!! unbelievable. Please address this problem so that no one else has to experience something as terrifying as this! recall number: 15v568000.

6 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2019

While driving straight on busy street approaching highway, car shook, all warning lights illuminated, then dimmed as car came to a stop and died in the center of the road. It could not be restarted. This happened in seconds, not affording driver enough time to move toward shoulder. As Hyundai explained, the engine failed and, in so doing, sent electric surge that also "fried" the starter. Dealer indicated there were photos of engine after incident. Local mechanic said that after removing the starter, visual inspection allowed him to determine a new engine was needed. This is consistent with Hyundai's explanation. There were no problems with this car prior. Two prior engine-related safety recalls (issued in response to this problem) were performed on this vehicle, and no safety problems were detected. Hyundai advised this is a known issue for Sonatas, and they remain unable to determine when/where this will happen to any Sonata. A local dealer had several on lot with same issue. Engine and starter need to be replaced, and it remains undetermined if any other components were impacted.

10 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2017

I am very unhappy with my Sonata, trouble since day 1! I was going on a family trip I have about a 300 nike drive not even an hour into the drive my car stops on the highway I had to get assistance to move it on the side of the road, road ranger spots me and stops to help he tells me I had engine failure! I then have to wait for someone to pick me up and pretty much left my car on the side of the highway until I returned from my trip. Then get my car towed back to Hyundai which cost me about 400, Hyundai keeps my car for about a month replaced the engine but not the turbo because it wasn't apart of th recall, really! my car drives like crap without the turbo , made a complaint with corporate and nothing has gotten resolved! I will never purchase another Hyundai again!!!!.

11 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2017

Last year (2016) 2 months after I purchased my 2012 Hyundai Sonata my engine failed. I realized it was due to a recall on my car. I was not notified at time of purchase and car facts did not mention open recall. The dealer refused to pay or be involved in the fixing of the car or the rental. Even though I paid 2000 dollars out of pocket for an extended warranty. The Hyundai company completed the recall fix on my engine and my insurance company (state farm ) got the dealership to cover half the cost of the rental. This year (2017) almost exactly 1 year later I am driving 60 mph down the freeway and my engine fails once again. I had my car towed to the same merced Hyundai dealership hat "fixed" the problem last year. The problem is the fuel tank has metal debri in it from the time hey built the car and over time as it passed through your engine it breaks it down. The "fixed" the problem by replacing my engine block but not replacing he fuel tank so won't the problem just happen again? I am hoping they don't try to make me pay for it this time around. I would like to know my options for this situation and who needs to be held accountable.
