42 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/27/2004

My car is 8 months old with 9300 miles, and I had to put another transmission in. . The Hyundai service manager claimed he put a new transmission in, when in fact he put a rebuilt transmission in. This happened 2 weeks ago. Then yesterday (04-13-04) my speedometer stopped working, brought it into the shop again, and was told they had to order a new speed sensor. What gives? don't they keep parts in stock. I phoned the parts department and asked if they had this sensor in stock and they said yes. I also called another dealer in the next town and was told they also had the part. So why did my dealer lie to me. .

49 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/28/2001

On April 28, 2001 I and three other passengers were riding in the vehicle. I was traveling down a long grade at 35 to 40 miles per hour. Toward the bottom of the grade the road curves to the right and at the bottom there is a traffic signal. When I came around the curve I saw that the light was green and proceeded to accelerate in order to get up the approaching upgrade. When I attempted to accelerate the engine revved very high but the vehicle continued to slow down. Tansmission had shifted into neutral although the shifter still indicated that I was in drive. The vehicle would not automatically shift out of neutral. I had to manually shift into low gear. Two days later I took the vehicle to the dealer and, after three days, I was told that they could find nothing wrong and that they would make no repairs. On Friday may 4, 2001 I was contacted by the Hyundai regional service representative who tried to convince me that there is nothing the matter with my vehicle. He told me that it was the vehicles "adaptive learning" feature that caused the shift and that what I experienced was perfectly normal. I find it very hard to believe that the new car I own was designed to shift and stay in neutral when it is in a situation where acceleration is necessary. Both the dealer and the manufactuer continue to insist that there is nothing the matter with the vehicle and refuse to make any repairs. Also, one week before the incident , my wife and I were on the same road and the vehicle did nearly the same thing. The only difference was that after about a second or two of stepping on the gas pedal transmission shifted itself back from neutral into drive. Please help.

50 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/13/2000

The airbag light comes on. The district manger, jeff westland out of n. J. , (609) 395-7308 stated that Hyundai is aware of a defect in the right passenger seat (late 1999's & early 2000's that rolled off the assembly) which makes the light come on if a person moves around in the seat, excessive weight of a passenger, or putting any object under the seat. What I find outrageous about this, is the last two times I've taken my vehicle in, I've been told that the airbag light was not on. When I spoke with mr. Westland, he wanted me to leave the car for several days at the dealship, first team, so they could go over it bumper to bumper. On January 8, 2001 I took the car into the dealer so they could look at the transmission and the airbag light which was on again. On that evening, at approximately 5:00, I received a call from the dealship, asking if I could come into the dealership the next morning to drive with one of their mechanics because they could not duplicate the problem with the transmission. I was unable to do so because of work. I was also told that the airbag light had not been on . I picked up the car that evening since, "nothing was wrong with it" and would be unable to test drive it with a mechanic. . I do not understand why the dealership is saying that the airbag light has not been on the last several times when it has been. The transmission sporatically downshifts when I am driving on the freeway on a straight and level surface at a constant speed. It also hesitates sometimes when starting off from a dead stop. If you would like any of the invoices stating the repairs that have been done to these two problems, please contact me. Thank you for your help.

60 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/09/1999

I bought this car used from budget car sales, less than 3 months the original transmission went out, earnhardts replaced with a so called rebuilt one, less than two years on this transmission and it went out. At the time of the first failure the milage was about 27,700, when earnhardt's replaced the transmission they did it with a rebuilt one. The service agent said at the time that I drove it off the lot the guarantee would be 5 years or 60,000 miles and when it went out it had around 42,200 miles on it. When I had the transmission checked, there was metal shavings in the pan. So I had the car towed to cottmans transmission in mesa, az. Where it sits because I didn't do anything to this transmission. It is a faulty rebuilt transmission that was put into the car. I feel I shouldn't have to pay for a lousy rebuilt one anyway. According to the TSB's there have been three different items listed on the transmission and I haven't received anything from Hyundai. There was no notification from them at all. This is my only car and I am a single mom. I need this car for work. There needs to be a solution to this problem. I hadn't even owned this car for less than 2 yrs. And I don't understand why it needs a 3rd transmission. There definitely is a problem and Hyundai and earnhardt doesn't want; to take responsibility but yet they want to take my money for which I don't have. I can't even find a consumer address for them on the internet. Thank-you for looking into this.
