2 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/16/2020

4 times over past 10 months (3 in past 2 weeks) the power steering went out when the car was left in the sun longer than an hour. The 1st 3 times the dashboard warning lights re-set themselves and the power steering started working again after turning off the car after being forced to drive home the car w/o power steering. The last time the lights stayed on and the power steering remained inoperable. For the second time in 10 months, I had to have the car towed to the dealer - this time they are replacing the steering column and the power steering unit. I thought that I had simply bought a "lemon" - I had to have the transmission replaced less than a week after I bought the car but after looking up my make and model on carcomplaints. Com I realized that many other Sonatas besides mine have lost power steering, many of them while driving (some at highway speeds). Besides brakes, steering is probably the biggest safety issue on any car. Hyundai has a really good warranty and I bought a more comprehensive warranty so my repairs should not cost me anything but the fact remains, this model Sonata has a significant safety defect that needs to be addressed by Hyundai before someone gets killed, if it has not happened already. I feel fortunate that my power steering never went out while I was driving the car like many others did.

3 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/02/2020

Car loses power steering at random times, but mostly on the highway. Recall campaigns 143 and 097 are related to the issue and were looked at by the dealership and "fixed," however, I believe this to be a repeat campaign. I have taken the car to bill dube Hyundai in wilmington, MA and they said I would need a new steering column, and that it is not related to either recall. I spoke with Hyundai consumer affairs as well, and opened a case. Hyundai consumer affairs called the dealership, but the dealership told them the same thing they told me, that what is happening is not related to the recalls. I then had my local mechanic at king's auto in reading, MA look at the car. He believes that the car does need mdps assembly 56310-3q200-qqh. Research tells me that it seems a lot of other Hyundai Sonata owners have experienced the same problem with losing the power steering, which is obviously very dangerous. I believe Hyundai is not acknowledging the ongoing problem, and should fix this at no charge. Thank you.

4 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/07/2019

On 11/5/2019 while driving steering wheel locks up throwing a eps code. Had to pull over in 55 mph traffic. Lucky I was able to get off the road. Turned off the car and restarted it and the eps light was gone. I made it home. On 11/7/2019 on the way to dealership when I lost all power steering and had to have the car towed to Hyundai of valdosta, where it currently sits. This is really dangerous.

5 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/04/2019

11/4/19 I had a power steering fail. While driving I lost my power steering, power steering light came on and due to traveling in the slow lane I was able to get my car in to the emergency lane. The traction control light came on only to indicate I was hitting the emergency grooves outside the lane. I turned the car off and while in process of contacting aaa - I started the car and the power steering light was off and I was able to drive home. I took the car to tarr huyandai the next morning and there were 3 codes present. My steering angle sensor was recalibrated. My concern is what caused the fail and no one seems to have an answer. This situation created a major safety hazard had I been driving in heavy traffic and this occurred and me unable to steer the car in manual mode. I contacted huyandai and apparently this has been a problem with 2016 Sonata models but my car was mfg at a plant that wasn't on recall. So at this point - the mfg plant where my vehicle was mfg apparently has the same problem with mine being the first reported. I feel totally unsafe in this car esp traveling on interstates, night time, etc since no one can answer why my power steering quit and reset when I turned the car off. This needs to be addressed before someone is killed. I was traveling on hwy 160 in morristown TN when this occurred - I am also concerned when I told tarr the power steering failed and the traction came on when hit the off road grids they listed traction control lamp was on and did not mention the power steering. That is important to remember with this case .

6 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/08/2019

Purchased our 2017 Sonata. While driving for no apparent reason I lose power steering and can barely turn the wheel. I have to pull over with great struggle and turn the car off then restart it to be able to get power steering back. The light for power steering illuminates on the display panel and then disappears after I re-start it. Along with the traction control at times, but often just the power steering fails. Happens usually at speeds around 10-30 miles per hour. They have had multiple recalls in the past years for the same problem. Even other models and same year. . Read more...

7 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/21/2018

After driving my newly purchased 2017 Hyundai Sonata, for any length of time or mileage, the power steering will make a clunk sound and then will stop working when slowing down and reaching a speed of around 10mph and then when I regain speed I am still struggling to turn the wheel because I've lost the power steering. I did discover that once the ignition is turned off and restarted that the power steering works again. However, when driving on a freeway or road, pulling over to restart the vehicle is not always an option and with the steering wheel so hard to control, the potential for accident avoidance is lowered. And winter weather conditions will make driving with this manual steering situation that much more dangerous. It seems the Hyundai elantra is having the same issue and a recall has already been issued.

8 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/12/2018

When I was driving on a city street I lost all power steering and eps light and traction light came on. I pulled over and tried restarting car still no power steering and lights. The car can only be steered manually now which is not safe.

9 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/17/2017

Purchased our 2017 Sonata sport in December of 2016. In July I had my first power steering issue. Happens usually at speeds around 20-30 miles per hour. Once going 40. Service department at dealership stated they can't duplicate the issue and gave the car back to me. Continues to be an issue. Also had to have the display panel replaced because only one half would illuminate. The display panel failed after only having the car 1 month. Took over 3 months for the part to come in so they could fix it.

10 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/12/2017

Power steering and non-requested activation of traction control_ I was pulling into my carport about 2 months ago when I lost power steering on my car. I called the dealership about 20 miles away and they told me to bring the car in the next day. The next day the power steering worked as normal so I called the dealership back and they suggested to bring the car in if it happened again. I was leaving my doctor's appointment on June 12th and the car had no power steering again. I called the dealership and told them I was nearby and I was on my way to them. I got about 200 feet from the doctor's office when my car started shaking and I couldn't control the steering. Luckily it was a 35 mph speed zone so I was able to get to the shoulder quickly. I thought the engine died but it was still running. I turned the car off and restarted it to see if the problem fixed itself, but the traction light was on and I still had no power steering. I made my way slowly the 5 or so miles to the shop. My vehicle had 54,358 miles on it when this happened the second time. Out of warranty because it is over 50,000 miles. This sort of issue should not happen on a car with so few miles and I take very good care of my vehicle, oil changes, tire rotation, brake inspections, etc. I had to pay out of pocket for the $1310. 00 in repairs to replace the upper part of the steering column where the 'power steering unit' is located. I contacted Hyundai USA and they couldn't do anything to help me. I disagree. My car has low miles and this type of danger should prompt a recall and re-imbursement of most, if not all, of my expenses. I commute to work on interstate 5 and if I had been going the 65 mph speed limit when this happened, I could have been killed and maybe the drivers around me . I am not entirely sure that the problem has been really fixed. I feel uncomfortable driving my own car.

11 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/20/2016

I lost power steering when I was pulling into highway traffic from a gas station and almost hit cars in the parallel lanes because I couldn't turn quickly enough. The warning light illuminated just prior to losing power steering.

12 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/19/2016

I was driving and all lights began flashing on dashboard, steering wheel jerked and I lost power steering, was able to pull off road into a parking lot, turned the car off and it would not start back up.

13 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/22/2016

All dashboard lights are turning on. The car loses power steering. The car will at times not turn on. This happened a few months after I purchased the car. Hyundai can't seem to find the problem. The problem eventually goes away by itself for a few months and reappears again. We had the fuel sensor and battery replaced. They said my alternator and starter is still good. The car never stalled during driving only looses power steering which can be dangerous while driving. We noticed when we adjust the steering wheel up and down, it cleared the issue for a few months as well. I believe 2015 Hyundai Sonatas are experiencing electrical issues. I read online other owners having the same issue.

14 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/03/2016

Eps dash light came on and vehicle lost power steering assist steering. Vehicle was parked in a parking lot and this happened as the car was started when backing up out from the parking space.

15 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/07/2015

On August 7, 2015 at approximately 9:30 pm, I was coming back from running an errand with my 16-year old daughter in the car with me. I made a right-hand turn when suddenly, all of the lights on the instrument panel illuminated and the engine stopped. Additionally, I lost all power steering, etc. I was able to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road immediately, but almost got rear-ended by a pickup truck that was following me. I turned off the car, let it sit for a few minutes, and started it up again. The car seemed fine at that point, and I was able to continue my short drive back to my home (approximately 1. 25 miles). When I arrived at home and placed the car in park, the oil pressure light was flickering slightly. I turned the car off and went into the house for the night. The next morning (8/8/15), I checked the oil level in the engine, and noted that it was slightly above the fill line. I added some synthetic oil to the engine, checked the level and noted that it was adequate. I started the engine to go run some errands. The car seemed fine at first, but when I was approximately 5 miles from my home, the oil pressure light began to flicker again while the car was idling (at a stop light, etc. ) I called my husband right away, who told me to bring the car home. I noted that the engine had somewhat of a ticking noise while driving it. When I was approximately a quarter-mile from home, the engine started knocking/banging very loudly. I immediately shut the car off, called my husband, and called for a tow truck. I had the car towed to my mechanic's shop. On Tuesday, 8/11/15, my mechanic removed the oil pan and informed me that the bearings were failing, which caused metal shards to clog the oil pump filter, and he also noted that the oil pan was full of shards. This car is a safety hazard and needs to be recalled!!!.

16 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/21/2013

While driving at a low speed, approximately 30 mph and slowing to a traffic light, the entire electrical system on my 2012 Hyundai Sonata GLS failed. I lost the power steering, braking and gas. All of the warning lights lit up on the console. Luckily I was able to allow the car to come to a stop on its own - if I had been traveling at a higher rate of speed, or if someone had been crossing the road, the result could have been much, much worse. Once the car stopped, I put it in park and the lights stayed on. I turned the key to the off position and then back on and it turned right back on as if nothing happened. The car was then towed to the dealer and was in service for 5 days, and they claim to be unable to replicate the failure. Since they are unable to replicate, and lemon law state that an issue must occur 3 times, I have no course of action to take besides buying a new car and taking on added expense, or driving this car, which may or may not be safe from defect and hope it doesn't happen again. I will file a complaint with Hyundai as well.

17 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/11/2012

During the last couple of weeks of rain, we have had multiple occasions where our vehicle has lost power steering and our battery light goes on during low speed operation. . There was no deep puddles, just normal rain on streets. In some cases, total stall and others engine screeches and restarts. Without warning. Filed complaint with Hyundai America. Took to dealer. Was advised this was a known problem for 2007-2009 Hyundai Sonatas. And there was no known fix . Had vehicle checked. Advised all splash guards and shields in place. Could not be duplicated at dealership. One service rep at dealership advised his wife has same problem. All belts and pulleys and tension springs ok. We are very disappointed in the response we have received at Hyundai to a "known " safety problem. To be more specific, five(5) occasions have occurred. Told to come back when it rains.
