Tl the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel was shaking violently, without warning. The contact contacted dick smith Hyundai (825 congaree rd, greenville, SC 29607, (864) 284-7777) where they informed the contact that the vehicle was previously repaired under an unknown recall for the steering column. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 164,295.
My engine light has been on for 6 months and I had the timer sensor replaced twice. And it is still on. My car steering wheel vibrates at times. The steering wheel makes a cracking noise while parking or pulling out. Also my airbag light has been on continuous for 6 months over the steering wheel. Keep taking it to the shop and told to check recalls but my car is never listed.
My steering wheel starts shaking when I go over 60mph and whenever I drive through a slightly bumpy road.

When driving, my steering wheel shakes/rattles major on highway to wear I have to hold the steering tighter to try to make it more secure. It also shakes/rattles just driving through the city at lower speeds. It does not feel safe, secure or normal for this to be occurring. It feels like it is the entire steering column that is having issues and just seems to be getting worse over time.
When I turn my steering wheel either left or right there is a knocking/clunking in the steering column. This happens whether the vehicle is in motion or stationary. Also, while the vehicle is in motion and I drive over a rough spot or dip in the road or cross a rr track, the steering wheel shakes and rattles. I understand this is a worn rubber cushion in the steering column and costs upwards of $300 to repair. The issue/item was a recall on 2011-2013 Sonata's, but not on the 2014. This appears to be an ongoing issue with the Sonata. Why haven't the newer models been recalled as well?.
When driving there is a clicking noise coming from the steering wheel and shaking of the car and when running over man holes.

Steering wheel shakes unconteillably hard and makes a clicking noise as I drive especially over 50 miles approximately. And especially on the freeway.
Takata recall, I've been experiencing brakes, my steering wheel shakes when I brake, and the exterior lights my tail lights are going off and on. All these issues were from January of 2019 current date July 27, 2019. I have taken my vehicle to the dealership and mavis tire. I got a new axle, brakes, routers, new tail lights nothing is working. It's been long overdue. Hyundai dealer wants a total of $1700 to fix. I refuse when I verbal told them there are complaint from all vehicle owners that had the same module vehicle as me. I looked and there is no recall on these issues. I told them I have three little kids and I don't feel safe driving my car anywhere because of these issues. Hyundai refuse to help!!!.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 65 mph, the contact heard an abnormal clicking sound and the steering wheel began to vibrate. The sound intensified when the vehicle accelerated. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 155,000.
Whenever I drive over any slight bump in the road my steering wheel shakes. I took the car to get repaired and was told it was the intermediate steering shaft. This was after a wheel alignment, wheel balance, and loose tie rod was repaired. My chief complaint was that the steering wheel shakes. I was told that this repair was under the 100,000 miles warranty. After doing some research I found since I'm a secondary owner, I'm no longer under the warranty. I don't believe this type of mechanical issue should occur on a vehicle that's only 5-6 years old.
Steering wheel shakes, makes a clicking noise with the slightest turn or move of the wheel, vibrates and makes a loud noise when going over the slightest bump. Sounds as if something is loose with the steering component. Feels like it's about to fall off. Steering wheel feels loose. Started at about 70,000 miles. Concerned it is a real safety hazard. . . . Do not feel safe driving this vehicle anymore. Something has to be done as I see a lot of complaints about the same thing.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the steering wheel failed. When turned to the left, the steering wheel made a knocking noise. While driving 45 mph or more, the steering wheel vibrated. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel rubber coupling needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the steering wheel was repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 16v190000 (steering). The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The failure mileage was 115,000.
Steering makes a clicking noise when going over bumps, potholes, etc. Depending on the condition of the road, the steering wheel will shake. Occurs at almost any speed (but occurs less due to the stability at low speeds).
I bought a used 2011 Hyundai Sonata in March for my birthday, and about 3 months ago, the steering wheel started shaking violently any time I got to 60mph or higher. Upon further investigation, I found out I needed a new steering coupler. Before it got fixed, my dome lights, and all of the buttons on the right side of the steering wheel (trip, cruise control) stopped working. After being fixed, none of the above mentioned things work, but also now,my power locks, dash clock and horn stopped working. I almost got hit by another driver a few days ago, and didnt even have a horn to honk!.
This is independent of campaign 10v426000 which involved "potential loss of steering ability". In 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, there have been numerous complaints involving the 2011 Hyundai Sonata in which the steering wheel shakes aggressively at speeds of 60+. In addition, there is a loud clicking sound that you can hear and feel when turning the corner or driving at speeds of 35+. While sitting idle, if the steering wheel is even slightly moved from left to right, you can hear and feel a knocking/clicking sound. When driving at speeds of 20+, any imperfection in the road or highway causes this "unsteadiness" in the steering wheel and the continued knocking noise. In all cases, it almost feels as if the steering wheel or the tires are going to detach from the car while driving. The car feels unsafe to drive in normal weather conditions and could be life threatening at high speeds or in adverse weather conditions. Given the vast number of complaints, I'm concerned that NHTSA has not taken action. Please find below the online complaints regarding this matter. This problem is likely impacting hundreds of thousands as not everyone will take the time to write a complaint. Given the past issues with a "steering issue' for the Hyundai Sonata 2011, your immediate attention in expeditiously identifying a possible life threatening problem would be greatly appreciated. Hyundai has been contacted by the public but has taken no action on their own accord. I have attached examples of the complaints online concerning this issue. Thank you for your assistance and review. . Read more...
Steering wheel starts shaking at about 50mph plus. I have had new tires, alignement, shocks, all of this replaced and the vibration/shaking continues. There seem to be a lot of complaints out there for this exact same issue. This is a significant safety issue and is happening to a lot of Hyundai Sonata owners. Steering systems should not fail on a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles and one that is merely 7 years old. Most people take loans out on vehicles these days for 6-7 years.
Steering wheel will shake rapidly when driving. Especially when I'm driving on the interstate.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 80 mph, the contact noticed that the steering wheel began to shake very aggressively and made a slow, rattling sound. The contact slowed the vehicle down to approximately 75 mph and the rattling sound and shaking of the steering wheel ceased. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (glick GMC, 48 bridgeville rd, monticello, NY 12701) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear assembly and torque failed and needed to be repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v426000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair cost. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 138,000.
Since I bought this car in oct 2014 I've had problems with the lights. I can be driving and they cut off. I can turn on my turn signal and the lights go out. Or I'll be driving and the inside lights come on by themselves. When I drive my steering wheel shakes.
When car reaches over 65 mph or hits a bump, there is a horrible ticking noise with the steering wheel. The steering wheel shakes uncontrollably when the car reaches high speeds. A few other people I know with Hyundai Sonata's have the exact same problem. A few months after I got the car in June with 83,000 miles on it , thats when the ticking noise started. Its the worst sound ever.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. While driving, the contact heard a loud clicking sound and the steering wheel vibrated when turning in either direction. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (piazza Hyundai of pottstown, 84 autopark blvd, limerick, PA 19468) where it was diagnosed that the steering coupling was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.
Steering wheel coupling. I have had a clicking/clunking sound coming from the steering column for a while now. Over 55 mph, it is causing the steering wheel to shake profusely. I see others have entered complaints about the exact same problem on the same year make and model of my car. This is such a widespread, well known issue, how in the world is there not a recall for this cheap part? is it going to take someone dying while driving for this to be a recall campaign? the NHTSA really needs to step in and do something about this widespread issue.
There is and has been a very loud rattling noise coming from the steering column. When on the freeway, I must drive under 60 mph to avoid the noise. If there is a dip in the road or a speed bump it rattles loud. The steering wheel does not shake, so it isn't affecting my driving, but very disturbing and embarrassing. The lighting, there is a short. I'm constantly having to replace or tightened every couple of months. I spoke to someone that works at kragen who also has a Sonata and he said he had the same problem until he ordered a $40. 00 casing. When he replaced my lights, he was unable to remove the bulb by twisting. He had to brake it because it had melted. I have not ordered it yet, but he ducked taped it in place and I still have the issues. This is ridiculous that I have to go through this. I'm an uber driver and I am trying to keep my car safe and in great condition, but it is disturbing when someone tell me my lights are out.
Steering wheel / steering coupler. Steering wheel would shake and rattle when driving over a bump( all the time) or hit a certain speed or driving on a freeway.
Severe loose play & clunk in steering column and steering wheel. Steering wheel shaking while driving & loss of control and trouble staying in lane. Vehicle only has 4,200mi's.
Steering column recall: had the recall done by Hyundai new rochelle. Immediately felt and heard a difference in the steering (loose clicking sound when turning) and immediately took it back to dealer. I was told all was okay and it was part of the new recall. Soon after the clicking sound when turning the steering wheel got louder and my horn goes in and out or working. Was told by another mechanic (when I went to get my wheels balanced as the steering wheel shaking) that they could see the replacement from the recall but that there seems to be too much "play" between the gears so that they do not meet flush. Was told it is a costly job and should go back to the dealership service department to report the problem. Seems there are many more problems just like mine following this recall all over the internet.
"steering coupler is bad" per the second mechanic that has looked at my car, one was from a Hyundai dealership. I know two individuals that have replaced their steering coupler after the steering wheel started shaking, rattling, or clanking noises. If it is not replaced and the coupler breaks, I will loose control of my car.
Tekata recall steering wheel shakes bad sounds lose really started after my warranty was up abd that's only 5 days so I pay all this money carzy airbag light came on and never went off all light bulbs on the car like front lights always go out I have to change them so many times and back lights even got tickets this cost me this happen why driving the car.
The steering wheel makes a loud clucking noise when turning left and right, while driving and while stationary. The steering wheel also shakes when driving on the highway and feels loose like it will come off.
Steering wheel coupling. I have had a clicking/clunking sound coming from the steering column for months, it is audible when you are sitting still, driving, turning, and when you go over 60 mph, it is causing the steering wheel to shake profusely. I finally get online to research what it could be and I see hundreds of other complaints about the exact same problem on the same year make and model of my car. It is a part that costs less than 3 bucks to replace, but owners are being charged over 300 bucks to replace this, for the labor. If this is such a widespread, well known issue, how in the world is there not a recall for this cheap part? is it going to take someone dying while driving for this to be replaced? this is absolutely ridiculous and the NHTSA really needs to step in and do something about this highway robbery that Hyundai is getting away with on such a widespread issue.
I have excessive free play in my steering wheel while the car is stationary and my steering wheel vibrates and shakes while I drive the at high speeds or changing lanes. Also my suspension feels loose when going over bumpy roads.
The steering wheel column makes a loud clicking noise when you turn it to the left and to the right. When you travel over 50 mph the steering wheel shakes violently and makes a loud noise. When you go over any bumps the steering column makes the same loud noise. I do not feel comfortable driving the car as it feels like the steering wheel is going to break off. This is extremely dangerous. This should definitely be a recall due to the high possibility of something catastrophic happening while driving the car. I have taken it to the shop and it is going to cost approximately $400. 00 to fix for a part that cost only $4. 00. This part should be a recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!! listen to your consumers as this is a dangerous condition.
#1today 9/18/2016 while I was driving down the road my airbag light came on. When I made my first stop the light when off. When I began to drive again the light came on and will not go off. #2 I had to pay over three hundred dollars to have my sterling coupler replaced it started with a little clicking noise when I turn to the right and afterwards began to progress and get louder. While driving the car the steering wheel will shake and vibrate until it felt as if the steering wheel will shake a lose. #3 the lights on my car will flicker on and off while driving it's very obvious at night it is a scary situation. One night they flicker and didn't want to come back on right away until I had to pull over on the side of the road until they came back on. I called my Hyundai dealer and was told that it will be an 118 service charged to look at it because my warranty is up. I then contacted Hyundai USA when they finally contacted me back they pretty much told me the same thing the Hyundai dealer said. The problem with my lights began in 2012 but every time it took the car in the problem could not be detected so they would say and this was when I was under my warranty.
