37 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/16/2016

61,149 miles and about a month ago I was on the expressway and noticed the steering wheel start shaking when I hit about 65mph, drop to around 60 and it would stop. I thought it was the tires, alignment or something else but then I started noticing that even going over small bumps or sewer lids the steering wheel would shake and make a knocking noise. I took it to a mechanic who said this was a recall and should be covered, went to dealer and they said its not covered because general warranty just expired, called and told me it was the steering coupling, it was not under recall and it would be $427. 00! ebay has the part for $5. 45! after researching and reading these complaints I am glad that I am not alone, however a lot of us are unfairly out a lot of money if we had to pay to replace this rather than risk our lives! with the eps recall and the other steering gear assembly recall, why isn't this part of it and why isnt it covered? seems to me that there are enough complaints and owners having this issue, and not all of them have made complaints here. It also seem that this is happening right after warranty, 60k miles?? ironic? this is my 2nd Sonata and I and the 2nd time that right after the warranty expires, something all of a sudden goes wrong. I have persuaded others to purchase Sonata and elantra and planned on purchasing another Sonata but this is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth. A week after my last Sonata warranty expired I started to have problems, problems that were of course no longer covered under warranty althought when it was covered they told me there was nothing wrong yet after warranty they found the issue? I ended up spending over 2k out of pocket and then decided to purchase the 2011 Sonata. I really hope this problem is investigated, corrected and added to the recalls!.

38 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/08/2016

I have noticed a knock in my steering wheel. The noise is getting worse and the steering wheel vibrates when my tires go over a bump. I will be bringing it into the shop in a few days to get repaired. I have done research and found that this is a systemic problem that could result in a crash. Hyundai needs to issue a recall on this item, as it is unsafe to continue driving the vehicle. If this doesn't warrant a recall or class action law suit, I'm not sure what does. My vehicle was under the 100,000 mile warranty when this issue began, but has got excessively worse. I just ran out on my 1000,000 mile warranty, by about 250 miles.

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Sometime in late 2016, the steering wheel started knocking when turning and at speeds above 55 on a straight road the steering wheel would vibrate and it's getting worse every time it's driven, I have had new rotors new brakes new tires and new float pins installed in the calipers and 4 tire rotation, I was finally told that I needed to look up the steering coupler because it's a piece of plastic that would eventually break and I would have no steering by a certified mechanic I went to dealer and they smiled and said yeah we have a ton of those but of course also said they know about it but they aren't required to fix it, that's a very serious safety issue if it sill make the car lose steering, I also have a 2011 kia optima sx with the exact issue and kia will fix it free of charge, these are the same exact cars pretty much and I can't believe they know about it and have a limit on miles since kia has the extended warranty of unlimited miles because they know it's a serious issue.

45 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/21/2016

I purchased my lemon vehicle from webb Hyundai in highland, in and purchased it used in March of 2013. I'm always hearing about this 100000 miles warranty, my vehicle hadn't quite made it to that, when I first questioned the clicking in the steering wheel and shaking of my vehicle; because my car was used for me to daily travel throughout the entire state of indiana, my vehicle in July 2017 had exceeded the 100000 mile and the used warranty stated coverage only up to 60,000. However, I wrote Hyundai, took it back on several occassion and they did actually fix my engine, thanks to the recall, in which they first denied me for 45 days, when I receive my vehicle back I told them about the clicking noise and I always was given some lame excuse and it's amazing how in July of 2017 they were constantly calling my phone and I even got an email on July 12, 2017 on how they've been attempting to phone me, not mentioning all the continual calls I had given them prior to this. However, during this time our family was dealing with a crisis in which me getting back with them was not as urgent and when I did try returning the call on several attempts between August and September of 2017, I never received a call back and I still have ownership of the awesome lemon that was sold to me.

46 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/27/2016

While driving 45mph I experience my steering wheel shaking and it leaves the vehicle hard to control and it pulls to the right. I then started to experience my car not starting after sitting for not even 5 minutes and this has been occurring for 2 days. I took my car to the local dealership and was advised that I needed to replace the starter lever and steering coupler. Both of these are common defects of this model and has been recalled in the past. I called Hyundai today and was told that I am now responsible for the cost of the repairs regardless of what happened in the past. The repairs are going to cost me a little over $600. 00 when the parts are plastic and wouldn't cost more than $20. 00. A complaint has been filed with the bbb as well. . . This is a major safety issue on this vehicle and the manufacture needs to do a better job at building these parts.

47 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/09/2016

When driving over 50 mph steering wheel shakes uncontrollably, steering wheel makes a clicking noise when any slight movement made other than driving straight. I took my car to be evaluated at my local Hyundai dealer and was god my steering column was loose and that the entire steering column would need replaced. The dealership told me this issue is affecting the safety of my vehicle and the repair would be at my own expense. They could give no explanation as to why the steering column became loose ( my car has never been involved in an accident) I did some research online and found hundreds of other people complaining of the same issue with this specific year make and model vehicle. My VIN # has had 12 safety recalls since purchase. I feel this steering column problem needs to be a safety recall issued by Hyundai. Thank you.

48 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/05/2016

My car's steering wheel was making clicking nose. It probably started some time last year, but I didn't think much of it b/c sound was very faint. But now, the noise is pretty loud and that it's affecting the car's driving performance. The steering wheel shakes when I drive over a certain speed limit; makes noise whenever I turn, go over a bump, or whenever I turn the steering wheel even when it's stationary. . I brought it to the dealer and dealer said that the steering coupler needs to be replaced. Though I own the car for over 5 yrs , I only have $51k miles on it. This is a poor design and, more importantly, a safety issue that Hyundai needs to address with a recall ASAP before someone gets hurt!.

49 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/31/2016

Steering wheel makes a clicking noise when turned left or right, and shakes and rattles violently when going over a bump (whether it be a small bump on the road or speed bump). Also shakes and rattles when I brake. After one shake and rattle incident, my airbag light came on and stayed on. None of my steering wheel controls (volume, bluetooth, phone, cruise control, etc. ) work. My horn no longer works also. Took my car to Hyundai dealer and had to pay $118 just to have it diagnosed! really?!? I had to pay in order to find out what was the problem with my car. Service technician said the shaking/rattling problem was the flex coupler assy, which they quoted me was $475 to fix! then they said it would cost me another $225 to fix my steering wheel control issue! come to find out many other people are having the same issue that I'm having. It is a safety concern and should be a safety recall. Called Hyundai customer care and they told me they can't do anything about it because I went over my warranty mileage limit. This is a huge safety concern issue because when my steering wheel shakes, I feel like it's gonna fall off. I don't feel safe driving a car that violently shakes. Considering so many people are having this same problem, I don't understand why Hyundai isn't taking the time to look into this issue and resolving this problem with so may complaints regarding the same issues! I'm not paying another $700 to fix my car when it is obvious Hyundai used cheap ($2. 00) part that are breaking down on their consumers. I already paid $118 just to find out what the problem was! Hyundai needs to resolve this issue as soon as possible before it gets worse and/or fatal! this issue needs to be recalled!.

52 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

53 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

Power steering recall notice issue and steering coupler/column replacements. Loud noises coming from the vehicle and the steering wheel would shake. Which caused problem during highway driving. Wearing out my tires, absolutely unsafe to drive. It amazes me how many other Sonata owners have the same issue. Hyundai take action and responsibility. This isn't fare to consumers.

54 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

Steering wheel shakes violently when driving on the highway. The wheel feels loose.

55 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

My car started to make loud noises from the steering wheel. It wasn't as loud when it began, then the more I drove my car the louder it became. I do not know why my car started to make these types of noise, I just started my car and I started to drive and that's when I realized it was making noises. I took it to the Hyundai dealership and they told me it is really dangerous to drive my car. The cost to repair it was way over my budget. I researched the problem on the car and there are hundreds of videos from car owners that were going through the same problem. This problem has not been a recall. If this problem can be life threatening then why is it not mentioned as a recall. I still have the problem and there are lots of people out there that are trying to find a solution. Now I can't drive on the highway because if I drive 60mph or above the steering wheel will shake uncontrollably and I have to decrease my speed just to control the shake. Now the noise is louder then ever. My car is in great shape and I can't drive the car anytime I want because I don't want to risk anything driving the car.

56 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/11/2016

When stopped, turning the steering wheel left or right produces a thumping sound/feel in the steering wheel. Steering wheel also vibrates at higher speeds, around 70 mph. Dealer diagnosed this problem as a failure in the steering column, w/Smart key - 2011 Hyundai Sonata [563103q400] . Dealer quoted $1300 to repair. I am currently asking the dealer to reevaluate the condition to see if this is really a problem with just the steering coupling, Sonata - 2011 Hyundai Sonata [564003q000]. So far no repair has been made.

57 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/11/2016

There is a major safety issue with my Sonata's steering. I have read a ton of complaints on the same part failure, but am unable to locate a recall for the rubber coupler that connects the electronic power steering to the actual steering column. I started hearing a clicking noise in my steering wheel when the wheel was turned in either direction from center. It did not make a difference if the car was moving or at stop. The noise continued getting worse over a 3 month time frame and is now more of a thud noise. The noise itself is not the safety problem, only a side effect. The safety issue is that the same part that is failing causing the noise has now started to cause the steering wheel to violently shake back and forth anytime the car goes faster than 55-60mph. How can someone maintain control of the vehicle when the steering wheel is shaking so badly, and how exactly is this not a safety issue? it is scary to drive to say the least, but I have to drive 80 miles round trip daily for work. My arms are almost numb by the time I make it to work or back home from being shaking almost the entire way. It is not like I can drive the car slow enough on the freeways here in the dfw area, that would be a hole other safety topic. I guess I'm going to have to fork out the $3-400 to fix it. Why can't NHTSA just add this part to the eps recall #143 that covers the eps control unit? if the dealer has to take it a part to replace the eps control unit, why would they not install a new coupler? its, funny though, you know Hyundai is aware of the issue, they changed the design of the coupler from a rubber one to a metal one on the newer models, but have yet to do anything about their poor design or earlier model years. There have been several recalls for additional items on this car that were not as severe as this issue is, so I¿m hopping NHTSA issue the recall.

58 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/04/2016

The steering wheel shakes and vibrates badly and loudly whenever applying pressure to brakes, especially if you are slowing down from going 50 mph+. The steering column also clicks and has a lot of give whenever turning. Hyundai mechanic says reason is the steering coupler is loose and needs to be replaced. I have read numerous forums and discussion boards, and thousands of people are having this issue, and it needs to be addressed. I bought my car brand-new and have less than 60,000 miles on it. Apparently this issue is not related to the 2010-2011 investigation where the steering column was becoming separated and causing the same issue. Those cars were recalled and fixed. To fix this problem costs around $320 due to the mechanics having to remove the steering column. No recall as of yet covers this issue. Mechanic also warned that if it is not fixed, the steering column can become loose and in extreme cases, come off. This is a serious problem with this model and needs to be investigated.

59 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 55 mph, the steering wheel vibrated and an abnormal noise was heard. The contact had to pull the vehicle over to investigate the noise. When the vehicle was back in motion, it became difficult to steer. An independent mechanic diagnosed that the steering coupler needed to be repaired. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who confirmed the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000.

60 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

My steering column has began to rattle and come loose affecting the steering of the vehicle, a noticeable clunk and play is felt in the steering wheel and vibrates bad over bumps causing the car to jerk. The dealership immediately knew what I was talking about but stated there was no recall. I find this troubling being that they didn't even need to look at the car to know exactly what is wrong and told me continued driving will result in an accident. Symptoms started early 2016 car only has 70k miles.

61 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/12/2015

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with approximately 65,000 miles. In 2015 the steering wheel locked twice while on but parked. The esc and power steering indicators were on. After a while the issues spontaneously resolved in these instances and the vehicle able to be driven. In October 2015 the power steering locked up while driving the vehicle on a city street (speed <40mph). I was unable to turn the steering wheel and navigate resulting in several near misses with street parked vehicles before being able to stop the vehicle. Car towed to the dealership where they stated that they drove the vehicle around and "recalibrated it. " two months later while again traveling on city streets (<40mph) the steering wheel began to shake violently and I was unable to steer, again almost resulting in a significant crash. During this incident the same ecs and power steering indicators lit up. Unable to steer I was forced to stop and turn off my vehicle in the middle of a busy road. However, once the vehicle was turned off the steering wheel continued to shake violently until someone who came to assist me shut off the car battery. The car was towed to the dealership where upon showing them video the service manager stated he had never seen this occur in his 20 years of employment. The car is scheduled to be assessed on Monday. Internet searches show other videos of this make/model with the same violently shaking wheel and reports of accident close-calls. My specific car was part of an earlier recall (campaign 097) related to power steering that was reportedly fixed at that time, therefore this car clearly has known problems in this domain. I will never get back in this vehicle and will likely lose money on a trade in. There are clearly significant safety issues with this vehicle that have not been resolved by the earlier recall. . 62 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/07/2015

I have a Hyundai Sonata 2011 with ~ 70,000 miles on it. For more than a year, I started hearing obnoxious noise coming from the steering wheel when I drive on rough roads or take an exit on a freeway. The steering wheel will start vibrating and becoming harder to control. I voiced the concern to two Hyundai dealers (one in mi and another in CA) and told them I was worried about my safety and that riding in the car, but nothing was brought up about steering coupling, which as you will see turned out to be the problem. The problem continued worsening, until most recently I could hear obnoxious knocking noise by turning the steering wheel left and right, and on the freeway and rough roads, the steering wheel would vibrate and shake, and I could feel "looseness' when bypassing cars and exiting freeway. Worried about my safety, I took my car to a dealer and asked it to be fixed. For the first time, a Hyundai dealer recognized the problem to be the coupling. They fixed the car with $320, mostly labor with the part is less than $50 dollar (most other Hyundai dealers didn't want to do it for less than $380). The car has been fixed, and as of two days after the visit to the dealer, I no longer hear noise, and the car feels much safer to drive. This is a Hyundai problem and it is dangerous to the safety of people in the car and on the road. My dealer told me to keep the receipt in case a recall is issued. Seeing what turn my car took as a result of this problem, I strongly believe a recall is urgent. I hope NHTSA is listening, for the manufacturer is not.

63 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

66 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

My steering column has began to rattle and shake affecting the steering of the vehicle, it is especially worsened in the steering wheel and vibrates dramatically over bumps and when braking which is very scary. I've gotten at least 4 recalls on this vehicle since I purchased it and when I asked about this particular issue the dealership immediately knew what I was talking about but stated there was no recall. Instead, they informed me that the services would be roughly around $250 to replace a $2 rubber coupler. I find this very disturbing as this is a known issue and the company will not fix it, instead I was told that continued driving will result in an accident which forces me to either pay for the repair or try to fix this myself. The symptoms started late 2015 and my vehicle only has 80k miles. If this is a defect caused by Hyundai. . . Then it should be replaced by Hyundai. Placing a known defective part on your vehicles and leaving the expense on your consumer is unacceptable. Especially when its a safety hazard not only to the driver but anyone else on the road.

67 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

Steering wheel/column stated making a clicking noise about 6 months ago. At first it wasn't that bad; now everytime you move the steering wheel a clicking noise is made. Every bump or rut you hit in the road makes it rattle. Sounding as if it is getting ready to break. . I have taken it to the Hyundai place several times and reported this problem. Hyundai keeps telling me that this is not a recall. It will cost me $250. 00 to $300. 00 to have this repaired. My question still remains that if this steering coupling is defected and it is controlling the steering of the car then why if is not a recall? my steering wheel vibrates, shakes, and makes an awful racket. I do not understand how this is not considered a recall.

68 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

The problem started when my steering wheel began to rattle a week ago causing a harsh shake at the hands and a loud noise in the steering column. I called the dealership and they informed me it's a defective bushing that malfunctions and a large majority of Sonatas are having this issue. He said it's happening so much that the manufacturer can't keep up with producing the part so there is a slight delay on fixing it. I asked if the vehicle is safe to drive and he informed me the manufacturer said it's safe. I scheduled an appointment for a week and a half out, due to the supply and demand of the part. During this period I continued to drive the car and it would occur every time the car was in motion. While driving to work on a highway the steering deteriorated so quickly not only did the steering wheel start to shake violently but the entire vehicle would completely shudder while driving it. It felt like I was driving on an ungraded dirt road and the rattle was increasing loud out of the steering column. The vehicle became extremely unsafe and hard to handle as the steering would sway. This made the vehicle loose and uncontrollable to drive. There was no safe options to continue to drive the vehicle until it was fixed. There are very few vehicle issues more dangerous and devastating than loss of steering while driving a vehicle. This is roughly a $5 dollar bushing that takes around 2 hours to fix. A defect that is this simple to fix but is extremely deadly gives plenty of cause for a recall. On top of that, there is no doubt that a recall is necessary because of the widespread occurrences. Hopefully this doesn't continue to unannounced until major accidents happen before they fix this major defect. Please refer to the safety recall compendium where this fits the criteria for the NHTSA. . Read more...
