The steering has been failing over the course of several months. There is a loud clunking sound when turning the wheel and the steering is extremely loose. There is not an open recall at this point for this part. Research indicates this is a common problem and continues to worsen as the part erodes away. Shame on Hyundai for not addressing this known issue.
There is a pronounced shimmy in the steering when the car is both moving and standing still. This is particularly noticeable when you hit a bump. It feels like there is something loose or disconnected in the steering system. This causes me great concern in that whatever is holding the steering system together appears to have either broken, loosened, or is compromised in some way. My vehicle has been experiencing this since approximately 17000 miles. The same malfunction has been reported numerous times on various websites on the internet, one case in which the steering simply seized up. My mechanic says this should have been recalled and that it needs to be fixed immediately or I could literally kill myself if the steering fails at high speed.
The steering wheel locked failed during cold weather. Steering wheel lock would not release when trying to turn key, even though I was able to turn the steering wheel while trying to turn key. Worried wheel lock could fail while driving. Also, I see this car had other recalls which I never received info from Hyundai about, I am second owner of vehicle bought from Hyundai dealer in northhampton, MA.

Steering clunk when stopped testing side to side movement. Loud, in cab. Possible steering coupler failure. Unknown without disassembly. Potential for steering failure, causing accident. May be cause for off track steering issue while traveling on the highway. A previous complaint was made to local dealership that the vehicle does not hold course (steering line), forcing constant corrections with steering wheel to drive straight (or in desired direction of travel). Gives a feeling that tires are "tracking in a grooved highway" when you are on a smooth roadway at highway speeds 65mph.
The steering wheel clicks with a two inch play in either direction when the vehicle is stationary or in motion. The click is very loud plus the vehicle shimmies while being driven ! when the steering wheel is clicking a catch in the wheel can be felt! Hyundai dealer service man said the problem was a flexible rubber steering coupler and it was wore out down in the steering shaft . Hyundai customer relations dept. Told me the warranty on that part was extended to 100,000 miles but no notice was sent to the vehicles owner . I had to pay for the repair because my vehicle had 111,000 mile on it. I believe it is a critical safety issue that could cause a steering failure, based the degree my steering wheel was clicking and the two inch play that I was experiencing! the Hyundai complaint site is full of persons complaining about the same steering issue. During my many contacts with the Hyundai customer relations dept. I was told repeatedly that Hyundai does not recolonize this as a safety threat. I believe this should have been a recall at Hyundai's expense ! I also believe there are individuals driving with this dangerous condition because they cannot afford the expensive repair (+$400 ) that the dealer charges.
I purchased this auto in sept 2917 used, a few weeks later my wife was driving on a city street when the electric steering assist failed and a red steering wheel indicator appeared on the dash she managed to drive it home, when I turned the car off and restarted it everything was ok. On 11/12 2017 the same thing happened to me as I was turning onto a side street from a city street I was so surprised I didnt turn fast enough and almost hit 3 teenagers on a sidewalk. I immediately shut the car off and re started it and every thing again was ok. I am afraid there is a malfunction in the control I am sure it will happen again and the result may not be as easily solved.

My steering suddenly felt loose as I was moving it in the driveway. It continued that way. I took it to my repair shop and they identified that the steering coupler had failed. This part is a soft rubber and appears chewed up. The part has been replaced with what was described to me as a sturdier version. My mechanic wouldn't even allow me to drive the car home for fear for my safety.

The steering coupler failed, which causes steering issue, and could lead to crash if not fixed.
The steering column makes a clanking noise when turning in either direction or hitting bumps in the road. Vehicle steering wheel has developed a clunking noise when turned to right or left when parked. Also has a hard clunking bang in entire steering wheel when a bump is encountered. Recently while turning steering wheel in park , heard clicking/popping noise . Could feel the clicking through the steering column. Local Hyundai dealership (where purchased) diagnosed issue on August 31,2015. Description of diagnosis on service paper. " recommend replacing coupler " cost of labor at $222. 14 and part cost $3. 65. This issue needs to be investigated for root cause and corrective actions. This coupler should not be wearing out after 81,319 miles. Also , if this had not been fixed soon. , it may caused a steering issue. Last, I have read there are several hundred reports of this coupler issue. I already had another popping issue with steering last spring that the gear in steering rack failed per service report and was replaced . Fortunately under warranty. With these issues mounting, with high labor cost , the long term reliability and cost to own this vehicle ,is a concern.
