Hyundai Sonata owners have reported 5 problems related to transmission gear indicator (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Sonata based on all problems reported for the Sonata.
Sometimes while driving the car jolts back and then the gear indicator disappears on the gear shift and the letter disappears from the spot beneath the speedometer. When this happens and let off the brake the car stays still and when I attempt to accelerate the car struggles to shift gears. Also if this occurs repeatedly the check engine light turns on. I've told multiple dealerships and carmax about this issue but every diagnostic test save for one never reports the problem and it seriously impedes my mobility.

When changing gears from park into reverse, the gear indicator symbol on the dash disappeared and the car stopped moving and appeared to slip into a neutral or a non-gear. After putting the car into park, shutting the car off, and restarting the car seemed to help however when putting the car into drive the car jumped forward.

Start the car and gear appears on the shifter and the dash. While reversing from parking space, gear either slips or lurches, then gear indicator in the shifter disappears, as well as gear indicator on the dash. The car is hesitant to accelerate, as if it is in neutral. Shutting off the car and restarting, everything returns to normal. This happens intermittently, and has occurred four times in the past week. Attached picture of dash indicator and gear shifter shows that the car is traveling at approximately 18 mph, but gear is not indicated on the dash or gear shifter.
Immediately after starting the car the transmission gear indicator letters in the dashboard were blank and the shifter gears letters were not illuminated. A temporary remedy was to shut off the engine and restart the car. This problem is erratic and cannot be reproduced at will.
Manual transmission is extremely jerky. Transmission smells really bad after every drive. After clutch is released there is a blip causing a delay in acceleration, making the car very unpredictable. Stalls almost every time going into first gear from a stoplight. Car has stalled at intersection multiple times. New manual drivers are unable to drive this car because it is so dangerous. Driver is 15 year veteran of manual transmission cars.
