Hyundai Sonata owners have reported 7 problems related to transmission noise (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Sonata based on all problems reported for the Sonata.
1. Transmission does not function properly at all times. It slips from time to time upon acceleration, (right after deceleration), increasing the odds of a collision when attempting to avoid other vehicles on a collision course with mine. 2. Noise from steering column 3. Three trips to dealer have brought no resolution.

After transmission was replace in December 2020, noticed starting in Jan 2021, that vehicle did not stay in park and rolled back up to 5 feet from where parked. Pictures from parking lot, 3/6/2021 rolled back 5 feet from where it parked. Mileage on 3/6/21 was 96858. On 4/15/21 we have video with the noise that it is making when in park and rolls back (unable to attach here). Mileage on 4/15/2021 was 97881. Car was parked in a handicap spot at a restaurant. The amount of rollback could cause someone walking behind the vehicle to be crushed or killed.

While driving 25 miles on walnut st in rialto CA . All of a sudden my hybrid Hyundai Sonata made a grinding noise and stop responding I avoid hitting a car infront of me and approached the side walk messing up my right front bumper, when I finally stopped I put the car on park and it made a nasty grinding sound. I tried to put the car on d and it wouldn't move I put it on r and nothing. It was a very scarry experience, I want to know if there is anything you can help me with if there is a recall on the transmission because thats what it sounds like. I had it towed to my house because the gears are not workingit . It has 149346 miles.

I own a 2012 hyundia Sonata se with 136,000 miles. This car has a long list of issues from purchase date of 2011 to right now. The engine/transmission has been jerking, stalling and not having full power intermittiently as of the three years but this surpasses it all. July 2, 2019. I was leaving from a parking lot in reverse and heard a loud boom noise, I thought a collision occured. I looked all around and nothing was there. So, I place the gear into drive. . . . . Boom again. My entire body shook and the car proceed to jerk and hesistate through the parking lot. Nervously, I had to get on to the dangerous interstate 35 south and the car struggled to get the optimal entrance speed onto the freeway. It jerked more and more while on there and immediately exited at the first exit. The rpm dial was extremely higher than normal. I had to take side roads to avoid being hit or hitting someone to my house. I have been slightly terrified driving this car before with the stop and go jerking combined with randomly not starting, but now I'm beyond that now. Driving the last couple days has me a nervous wreck with the reading of this issue happening nationwide with our kids in tow. Please NHTSA, make hyundia accountable with these documented unsafe cars on our roads all over the country. This is not right. Thank you.
2008 Hyundai Sonata 6cyl dohc 3. 3l / 152812 water pump went out. Replaced it. Then water ended up in the oil that got into the lifters. Ended up getting another motor. Then my a/c stopped working (didn't blow cool or cold air). Changed oil and oil filter myself along with the oil sensor ( connected to oil filter spot) that was leaking bad as long as the car was running. I was driving on the interstate, in front of a loaded 18 wheeler, driving 75 then my car jerked real hard then dropped down to 40. I had to pull over illegally to keep from getting hit by the truck. As I was catching my breath I turned the car off. When I started it back up it made a weird tick noise. Haven't heard that noise since. When I pulled off it hesitated to change gears from 2 to 3. It finally changed and did not come out of 3rd. Got it towed home. Had my moms boyfriend to check the transmission. He drove it and it was fine. Next morning started car and it sounded like a vacuum cleaner. (low volume) finally it went away. When I headed to work, it hesitated at first. The vacuum noise came back and was louder. Then I sped up to 50, it hard jerked again, and stayed in 3rd gear. As I went further loss power in inside lane of highway and car was smoking under the hood. Like it didn't know I was pushing the gas pedal. Started shaking at around 20 miles an hour. Pulled over and check engine light came on. Called a friend to pull me back home. It was reversing fine but would not go forward. So I changed the accelerator pedal sensor (whole pedal) that wasn't the problem. So then I changed the entire fuel pump/ injector. Still have all parts by the way. That wasn't the problem either. Put it on the machine and it gave a code for ecm and oxygen sensor. Esc light came on as well as tpms, when I started the car. I could move forward but it was like I wasnt. This all started in February 2019.
