1 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2018 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 05/04/2021

Was driving on highway and engine started making a knocking noise for what seemed like 10 seconds then a loud boom and blew dark smoke out the back and engine stopped. I shifted into neutral and coasted off the freeway. Rear windshield and tailgate were covered in oil, at least it was clean, I had changed it a few days prior. Towed to shop and once on the lift the rod sticking out through the block was a shock to say the least. 14 months ago I replaced the engine after severe oil leaks led to the block warping. That was $6000 that Hyundai declined to cover. Put a used theta engine in and everything was good until this. Obviously Hyundai isn't going to cover this either. Have had the car for two years and still owe over $10k on loan. I'm about to pay for another theta engine that is coming from the same model year as the previous two. I feel insane doing this, like I'm asking for it to happen again but no other options.

Unexpected check engine and engine oil pressure lights came. There was a sudden knocking noise coming from the front/engine area so I pulled the vehicle over to the side of the highway to turn off. 4 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 03/30/2021

While drive my car started marking a loud knocking noise and jumping back and forth and the oil came on. I pulled over and called my son. He came and checked it out, there was no oil in it. He put oil in and and I tried to drive home. The car had no power and shut down on me and my son had to tow me home. The engine light has came on 50 times and in the last year and them goes off. I took it to dealer ship 10 different times while the light was on, usually it goes off before I get there. They always claimed there was not a problem and said I got bad gas in it.

5 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 03/10/2021

I was driving at high speed of 55 mph and experienced a high-speed stall on my 2013 Hyundai tuscon. I heard a knocking sound and then all my lights came on (oil, engine, etc. ). I was so scared and made it to the shoulder safely. Thank god. I tried to start the car but it wouldn't start. I also, saw smoke so I didn't know what was happening. So I was stranded on the highway and called a tow truck and they towed me to the mechanics shop in my town. The mechanic stated to me that there is oil leaking underneath and that my engine is shot! I have always taken very care of my vehicle, I still have two years of car payments on it! he said it looks like a rod broke and there is a hole in my engine! also, some kind of metal debris in my oil. So glad I am safe and my 9 year old daughter is safe. I am so upset. Very scary situation. Stay safe with these vehicles everyone. Not good. . .

6 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 02/23/2021

I have a 2012 Hyundai Tucson awd with 86,000 miles on it. While driving it recently could hear engine rattle/knocking noise. Brought it into the dealer and after two days looking at it, they said the engine needs to be replaced. They said the damage is in the lower part of the engine. They said since I am the second owner, manufacturer warranty does not apply. $9000 to replace engine. Recall for this engine in the 2012 kia with the manufacturer pays to have replaced, but not for same issue under the Hyundai brand??.

8 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2018 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 01/25/2021

I have a 2018 Hyundai Tucson. We heard knocking noise in the engine while driving at night and then the car failed to accelerate. We were able to get to the side of the road without crashing. We had it towed to a shop. The shop says that the engine had knocking noise were rod bearings and there was coolant/antifreeze in the engine block.

9 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 01/04/2021

I was driving my car up in wyoming on I-80 the day before I got my schedule oil change. My car all of a sudden made a loud banging noise on the engine and died. There was no check engine lights no lights whatsoever the car has been running great. Up until this moment nothing was wrong with my car I managed to get it to a mechanic and he said the engines was fried. This is definitely a manufacturer's defect, across-the-board there's so many people with this car complaining of the same problem. Now I need a new engine. They have recalls on just about every other model except this one which I think is wrong cuz it's the same thing happening.

10 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 12/30/2020

The incident occurred to me while I was 7 hours from home. I was stopped at a stop sign on a curve in the road. When clear, I accelerated and as I turned and merged into the road, the car started making a loud knocking noise and lost power as I was going up hill. Right before I lost all power, the oil light flashed briefly and the engine light came on. I restarted the car and again heard a loud knocking noise but was able to pull over to the side of the road. As soon as I slowed and stopped it died again. I ended up getting towed to the Hyundai dealer. The next day I called and they let me know I had "thrown a rod and had bearing damage". They said I need a new engine and quoted me $12,800. I have provided all service records to them which prove that I have maintained the vehicle with oil changes and major services done at Hyundai as well as valvoline. Their initial offer to me was they would cover 50% of the repair. My service advisor countered them with 90% and their final offer was to cover 60% and no rental - even being 7 hours from home. Before this incident occurred, I have not been able to open my rear passenger door in months due to needing a new actuator. I also let them know that I believed there was electrical issues because my tail light was always going out even after being replaced. I was dismissed and told that I had a faulty bulb. Same day after getting replaced, I was again getting that "check brake light" message. I believe there is a recall that I do not qualify for for this issue. After much research, I have found engine failure is a major problem with Hyundai with many people on their 2nd and 3rd engines, including 2 people in my own family. I am extremely disappointed in the way Hyundai is handling this situation and I will no longer be a Hyundai customer. Please let me know if I can provide any further information. Thank you!.

11 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 11/05/2020

Engine failure at 121k miles. I drive long distances for work so the miles are super easy not stop and go. I noticed a knocking noise at certain throttle pedal positions, I pulled into a gas station and checked the oil and it was barely touching the dip stick so I bought a quart of oil and this put the level in the middle of the acceptable range on the dip stick. I proceeded to get somewhere closer to my home. As I was driving on the interstate the check engine light came on and started blinking so I got off onto the exit and at the top the motor made a hard noise and stopped and all the lights came on the dash and smoke came from under the car. There was oil on the ground so I assume the oil pan had a hole from a rod failure. I change my own oil every 7500n miles when the factory setting tells me it's time. I use mobil 1 synthetic oil and a good filter every time. I had the oil changed the first time at Hyundai of ontario, calif and the second time at jiffy lube in redlands, CA. The price for synthetic oil change was ridiculous when I can do it for half minimum. Hyundai has said since I have no invoices for oil changes they will not cover motor fully? I know the computer can be accessed to see the dates when I reset the meter miles. I know since doing my research Hyundai has had the very same problems with prior year cars. I believe they should pay for this problem a car like this should last well into 200 to 300k miles when taken care of properly. I have had a Honda and Toyota that did high mileage with no problems. Hyundai still has a problem with the 2. 0 liter motors. The warranty needs to be made longer to 200k miles if they have really fixed the problem with this motor. I will never buy or recommend a Hyundai vehicle to anyone!.

13 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 11/01/2020

While driving on October 31st our car starting making a loud knocking sound but the engine light did not come on so we thought maybe something got stuck on the bottom but nothing was there. On Nov 1st the oil light came on so we went to get the oil changed. On the way the check engine light came on and shortly after the knocking sound got worse. When the sound got worse the car would no longer accelerate no matter how hard I pressed the peddle. We assumed it was the battery and got a replacement but the issue didn't go away. I was able to coast to a place for an oil change but after that the problem was even worse. I was on the highway with my kids in the car when the car completely gave out, it would no longer start. When I turned the key you can hear the engine wanting to turn on bit it never does. I had it towed to a mechanic the same day and he was able to look at it today (Nov 1st). He said the motor was completely shot and the car was unusable. We are about 1200 over the warranty so the dealship will not help us. There was no previous warning that anything was wrong with the car and it was extremely dangerous for the car to give out on the highway without notice. Now we are stuck with the expense while hyu youndai does nothing about checking the check engine light. After reading other complaints that are way too similar to mine, this needs to be looked into.

14 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 10/30/2020

On October 30 2020, driving home from work at 65 mph, my engine was making loud banging/knocking noises. Got it to my mechanic who was nearby and he stated motor is bad. Something broke inside topside of motor. Lots of metal shavings in the oil, possibly leading to turbo damage too. I have my oil changed about 5 times a year. No reason for premature engine failure at 118000 miles of highway driving. Hyundai won't honor fix due to outside of 100000 mile warranty. Saw cnbc news report on recent fines on Hyundai and kia. I need my engine replaced!.

15 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/31/2020

My fianc was on his way to work when all of a sudden the car starts to stall. It put him in a very dangerous situation as he has just crossed over a bridge. This could have cause a car accident. After this happened the oil pressure light comes on and also the check engine light, and the engine starts making knocking noise. We have kept up with oil changes and maintenance, so why this happened is just unexplainable to us. Also our car only has 65,893 miles on it. So just how can this happen? so we brought it to multiple dealerships and they said it needs a new engine, something you definitely never want to hear.

16 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai tuscan. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph when a loud banging noise began to come from the engine of the vehicle. The contact pulled over and had the vehicle towed. The contact stated that the vehicle sounded as if the motor had been blown. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealership. The vehicle had not been officially diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v063000 (engine and engine cooling) however, it was for changing an oil pan gasket and the oil pressure switch, not the motor. The approximate failure mileage was 112,000. Gl.

17 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/19/2020

It started making load knocking noises and lost power while driving on the highway.

18 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/07/2020

Bought 2013 Hyundai Tucson on 11/2012. Within 2 yrs of buying the car I started to hear a knocking sound from the front of the car, loss of power and it felt like it was going to shut down. I would stop and then push the gas to go and it was fine. This continued to happen intermittantly ever since I have continued over the yrs telling the service department of the issue but they could never replicate the problem. They tried a few things like a computer update/reboot. The issue was a little less frequent but it still continued. Over the years several family members witnessed this and were very concerned! recently 08/7/2020 we were driving interstate 70 in MD, considerable traffic, and numerous tractor trailors all traveling at high speeds! all of a sudden there was a consistant knocking sound even more intense than the ones I had heard over the years since buying the car. The front of the car was shacking and loosing power! my husband was driving in the left lane and struggled to get it to the shoulder where the engine still making the loud knocking sound completely shut down. There was a tractor trailor behind us when we got to the right lane and if it had died then we would have been killed! standed for 40 minutes in a dangerous location! it was towed to a Hyundai dealer in hagerstown MD. When they tried to turn it on there was smoke and they were quick to prevent it from catching fire. We were told it exploded, a bearing broke off hit the piston creating a hole in the engine and there were metal shavings in oil pan. We are the orig owners and have kept up maintenance at our dealership, it has 108k miles on it, a comprehensive ext warrentee but they will only put in a 77k miles used engine. Could have the same issues and may not be safe. Numerous complaints with the 2013 Tucson 2. 4l engine. Other yrs that have the same engine have recals, inexcusable 2013 is not included!.

19 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/01/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine with the check engine warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle initially towed to the residence where an independent mechanic informed her that the engine ceased. The contact had the vehicle towed to bob rohrman's indy Hyundai (7101 e washington st, indianapolis, in 46219) and was diagnosed with engine failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

20 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/09/2020

Got this car at the dealership in July last year. A few weeks before this happened you would notice a hesitation from the car to move forward when you press the gas pedal whiles driving on the road. The engine began to make loud knocking noises one morning and broke down while driving on the street. Got it towed to a Hyundai service shop and they are talking about making a "goodwill" repair which will end up costing $4800. I have read many complaints noted from the 2016 Tucson owners who experienced the same issues with their cars. This is obviously a manufacturing defect. The vehicle has been recalled before for a Tucson secondary hood latch recall campaign.

21 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2018 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 11/13/2019

I get oil changes quite frequently due to the mileage I put in a vehicle. I have 7 oil changes/tire rotations between November 2018 and November 2019. On November 13th 2019 my check engine like came on and at the same time my engine started making a knocking sound. Prior to this I had no indicators that anything was wrong. I immediately took it to the dealership and was informed that I need a new engine and that it's not covered under the warranty since I am the second owner. And that it's going to cost about $10,000 for a new engine which includes labor. Did I miss something here. My car is my livelihood and I have gotten every required maintenance. They said my car is burning through oil at a high rate of speed. There were zero signs of an oil leak and everything looked find other than the vehicle had no oil. Why didn't my vehicle alert me of this. Why wasn't there any indication until it was too late. Where the hell did all the oil go?? now I'm stuck with a high car payment for a vehicle I can not even drive plus because I need my car for my work I had to be let go from my job. Can't work without a vehicle can pay for $10,000 in repairs without a job and can't pay my car payment without working. I don't know what to do. This is just ridiculous especially since I have done everything Hyundai suggests as far as maintence (frequent oil changes and systems checks on a regular basis. Hyundai says sorry there's nothing we can do for you, you have to pay to replace the engine. .

22 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2015 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 10/12/2019

I bought this car as a lease return at 36k miles. I have taken it in for all the recommended services and also the oil changes at the recommended intervals. Never had an issue with the vehicle at all till now. At just over 70k miles I was driving at 75mph and the engine lurched and the vehicle went into limp mode. The fastest I could go was 60mph. The engine had a wicked knocking sound. Fortunately I was near a Hyundai dealership so I took it there. They said it needs a new engine. Thankfully I have the certified pre-owned warranty on the engine & powertrain up to 100k, so Hyundai is eating the cost. But it is still wildly concerning to me! I'll for sure be selling this car before it hits the 100k warranty.

23 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2015 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 10/06/2019

I've done my regular maintenance on this vehicle since I've purchased. Drove to two places today, after second place on start up oil light came on with very loud engine knocking. Checked my oil to find none on the dipstick, filled back up with recommended oil and some of the noise went away. Still has very profound knocking noises in the engine block with lack of power. Bought this vehicle with 44,500 miles now has 50,500. Shouldn't have any trouble at this mileage at all. Taking to dealership to see what will be done. This vehicle has common problem but no recall for this particular vehicle.

24 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 09/13/2019

I purchased this 2014 Hyundai Tucson as a second owner from a Hyundai dealership for my daughter in January of 2018 with 70,223 miles. Car had been inspected and serviced by the dealership Hyundai technicians. On 9/13/2019 while driving the vehicle started making loud banging noises from the engine and experienced difficulty shifting. Vehicle was towed to Hyundai dealership where we were told it had experienced "total engine failure" due to metal shavings throughout the engine and it would have to be replaced-my daughter had only put 23 thousand miles on it-the engine failed at 93000 miles. . The replacement could take up to 2 months-most likely due to numerous Tucson engine failures . There is a known problem with this engine-just check other sites on the internet. There is a recall with the same engine for sonatas, santa fe, and kia models but not Tucson.

25 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 09/07/2019

I was driving down the interstate when I noticed that when I got over 3000rpm there was a knocking sound coming from the car. . . I slowed down and it stopped for a short time but then came back regardless of speed. The knocking sound quickly grew louder so I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off. When I tried to re-start the car the knocking sound was persistent. I had it towed to a mechanic who said the engine needed to be replaced that it seems to have thrown a rod. I kept up with the maintenance and oil changes so there was no reason for this to happen at only 106k miles. I have been told from other mechanics they see this quite frequently in these models. Thankfully I was able to pull over to the side of the road but I was left stranded in the middle of nowhere for over an hour in the middle of a heat wave with no ac.

26 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

Heard a knocking noise while driving on city street, pulled over. No warning lights came on dashboard to indicate any kind of problem. Contact my husband who informed me not to move the car, and to have it towed to our home has not moved since towing. Oil change was done 3 months prior. A family friend informed me about a recall on Hyundai vehicles,I was not aware of any re-call nor was I contacted by Hyundai. I call to inquire the week of 08/26 - 08/30, provided my info and was informed that no recall was listed for my vehicle under the VIN#, about a week later after my call, I got a notice in the mail 09/09/19 for re-call campaign 181 - 19v063 spoke with a representative got a case#. Towed my vehicle to dealer ship 09/16/2019 was advised may need a new engine.

27 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/01/2019

Vehicle started up with very noticeable knocking noise, the engine light was on. It was still technically driveable, but had very slow acceleration. Stopped by autozone to have them check the engine code. I was told that the two codes that came up were related to needing an oil change. The following day, I stopped by jiffy lube to have them change the oil. The tech showed me a sample of the oil that came out of the vehicle; it looked like black, sludgy coffee. I keep up with oil changes, making sure to go to jiffy so that my records are accessible. I always have them use synthetic when I visit. The tech told me that the oil had been overfilled the last time it was changed. He also stated that he has noticed in Hyundai vehicles that the oil always turns black, even if synthetic is used. He said that he heard the knocking in the engine when they moved thr vehicle, and that it could be the lifters. After the oil change, I got into the vehicle and saw that the engine light was still on, and the knocking was still taking place. I drove across the street to christian brothers to have them inspect the vehicle. The shop had to remove the front part of the engine to check out the issue. After a few days, I was informed that the engine would need to be replaced as there were metal shavings inside of the oil pan. I began to do some research and found there was an unofficial recall on the theta ii engine (which is what this vehicle has). Hyundai was slowly starting to send notices out to people. I took my Tucson to a dealership and asked them to contact Hyundai to begin a claim for an engine replacement. I was told the claim was denied because the vehicle was not part of the recall. This is a 2013 model, and I purchased it in Sep/oct of 2016. The engine in a 6 y/o vehicle should not be shutting down, especially if maintenance was kept up. Nhtsa 19v063000.

28 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/26/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Tucson. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 71,000.

29 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/03/2019

While driving on the expressway in birmingham, coming from stockbridge, GA we heard a knocking noise under the hood and pulled over. The noise increased, so we had to have car towed all the way back to georgia to a Hyundai service center. It turns out the rob bearing failed, was the diagnosis. I purchased this car in oct 2018 the car broke down July 2019. Hyundai told me it would cost $10,000 to replace with a new engine or $6,000 used with 90k miles on used engine. I wrote a letter to Hyundai, who they had someone contact me and told me just to wait there will be a recall soon. Two months later I receive a recall notice for an oil pan leak recall #19v063000. That was too late! the car is sitting in my garage because I feel that Hyundai is responsible for fixing this car. I just read where Hyundai/kia had a class action suit on them and they settled, but 2012 Tucson was not listed only 2014, 2015, 2018 &2019 Tucson. How do you start a class action law suit?.

They performed the recall it did not fix the knocking noise I called corporate to file a claim they had me return to the dealership and run diagnostics in determining the diagnostics I am in need of a new engine however they only want to pay 2000 of the $3000 to $6000 it's going to cost to replace the short block engine.
