Replaced cracked cylinder head on 2000 4. 0l Jeep Cherokee, at 97,358 miles. Had been losing coolant since approx. 70,000 mi. But, no one could find a leak. Since reportedly there are thousands of identical complaints for this model year with casting no. 0331, I feel that Chrysler corporation bears responsibility for the replacement cost of $2059. 44.

The engine has 150,00 miles. It is losing coolant with no puddles to show for it. The oil pressure gauge shows 0 at idle. The engine constantly overheats. No sign of head gasket leak. Coolant overflow tank fills with coolant/oil/rust mixture after running the engine for 5 minutes. Door locks don't work sometimes. Tail lights work on and off while the lights are off. All problems started within the last year.

Have replaced the evaporator, condenser, compressor, dryer, belts, etc. Have spent close to $3k and still have no air conditioning.
First, engine began to loose overheat and loose coolant at 55,000m - 1 qt every 200 - 300 miles. No leak found by mechanic. Loss continued. Then loss of oil pressure when engine was warmed fully. Pressure drops at all rpm but down to 0 when idle is below 1300 rpm( (at idle). Cannot find leak but have been advised on several forums that this year (98 - 01) Jeep 4. 0 engines have a very high failure rate related to this problem. The problem appears to be a faulty engine casting prone to internal cracking, causing coolant loss and loss of oil pressure. Jeep dealer denies and knowledge of this issue. But, Jeep sent a special letter to buyers of this year/model Jeep Cherokee that they were desperate to buy as many of this year make/model as they could and would provide a reasonable trade-in value. They did not specify why they would need to acquire so many of this particular used year/model Jeep Cherokees.
While driving on a highway the posted speed limit, my vehicle started shaking uncontrolably and I had to get off the highway to stop the car so the shaking will stop. I have had a number parts replaced such as the steering stabilizer, and the steering rod.
Notice that coolant was disappearing from the reservoir tank. . . Had to refill every week. Took into shop. . . No visible coolant leaks. Discovered that coolant was leaking into the head in between cylinder 3 and 4. Coolant visible under oil cap and oil cap area. Possible defective head casting (0331).
Casting sand (from the factory) in the cooling system caused the engine to overheat. Engine replacement was necessary at 52,000 miles since the casting sand was throughout the entire engine. A TSB had been issued on the subject.
Temperature into red on several occasions and lowers when heat turned on. Oil pressure to zero at start up and while driving at range of speeds. Engine check light on. Been for repairs 5 times. Have been told rack and pinion leaking, needs new short block, gauge panel faulty, catalytic converter, and again new short block needed. Problem persists.
Engine blewout while driving at highway speed of 65-70 mph. Dealer notified. *akvehicle jerks while in motion at hywy speeds. The compressor clutch was defective and was replaced. The brakes pulsate when applied. The front rotors was turned. Brakes shudder when braking from highway speeds. The rotors were found to be warped. The engine overheats. The cooling system was found to be under high pressure. The cylinder heads were removed because they were warped. The engine was replaced due to warpage. A bump is felt when coming to a stop. The rear driveshaft was replaced with revised parts per technical service bulletin. The rear end noise is still apparent. A new shaft and yoke were installed. The transmission shofts hard on acceleration in low gears. The transmission control module was reprogrammed. Acceleration is still jerky while in motion and the turn signals and headlights go on and off at random. Consumer asks for reimbursment of monies paid and to have vehicle traded for one that can be trusted.

Car has been well-maintained throughout ownership/no abuse of any sort on our part hastened the extensive repairs/overall repair bill was $1500. Head gasket and assoc. Problems caused the water pump to seize up, the serpentine belt to slip off/the metal parts to be chewed up which went into the radiator causing the water lines and the radiator to be flushed as well. We are concerned about the extensiveness of this problem and the repair cost. We have contacted Chrysler, but they said they will not proceed with a recall until NHTSA reports this problem to them. That file # is 8646708. We previously owned the same make and model(1988 Jeep). We sold it at 200,000 miles--never having extensive repair problems such as this.

Severe brake problems with 2000 Jeep Cherokee. There was an ongoing braking problem and difficulty diagnosing the problem. The problem was thought to be the rotors which were cut and replaced (the front pads). The problem still continued. Then the front rotors were diagnosed as being warped and the brakes were 50% worn. There was a tapping noise in the shifting area as well as a rubbing noise in the steering column that comes and goes. (unable to diagnose) the vehicle had been diagnose as the rear brake drums being out of round. The water pump leaked and was replaced along with the thermostat. The comsumer requested a refund.
Consumer states front rotors continue to warp after (2) replacements. When ever the truck hits a bump while traveling 50 mph or above will shake violently. Owner is concerned about controlling the truck when this happens. Also the upper and lower ball joint was loose which was causing the steering wheel to shake, the transfer case was loose, the gasket and thermostat was replaced due to a coolant leak, cruise control was inoperative, the air condition and heater only blows at defrost vents, the rear luggage rail came out.
I think that the overall service of the Jeep dealer really stinks. No safety defect listed within summary.
Water pump went, causing the engine coolant sensor to go, tire rod needs to be replaced. Told this wasn't usual unless a lot of mileage. Could the mileage been altered? was this vehicle in an accident before I purchased it?.
The water pump went out on way out of town. White smoke poured out from behind the Jeep. We immediately pulled over and used our phone to call for help. We were told from a mechanic that it sounded as if the water pump went out. We waited for the Jeep to cool off, then added water to the radiator. We were able to drive at 35 mph until we found a service station to pull over at. At that time the technician told us that it was indeed the water pump and there was no more that could be done that day (Saturday-5:00p. M. ). We got our vehicle towed back home to lafayette, la. The next morning and at that time the towing/service technician also said it looked as if the engine head gasket was blown. Is that common for this vehicle with this milage? also, the brakes went out and we had them fixed a month ago at lafayette motors inc. Could they have known about the water pump or is that impossible? also, was there supposed to be any warning as a check engine light? we got no warning, but the smoke pouring out. ( dot number: ).
When getting out of the vehicle someone noticed fuel leaking from the vehicle. Dealer determined that the water pump broke, and the dealer replaced the water pump.
Engine fire.
