1998 Jeep Cherokee limited 4. 0 - when turning left and the fuel level is below aprox 1/3 full the engine stalls and stops running. This created a very dangerous situation when proceeding through intersections with on coming traffic. I am aware that many Jeep owners are experiencing the same problem which leads to a conclusion that this is a manufacturer defect.

Engine stalls at 70 mph, stop car restart, stalls again. With fuel tank reading 1/2 or below, filled up only held 10 gals. Ok until it gets below 1/2 tank. Keep above 1/2 tank no problems.

Engine stalls when fuel level is 1/2 to 1/4 full, especially so when making turns. There are dozens and dozens of other Jeep Cherokee owners whom I have spoke to that also have this problem. Just visit any of the Jeep owners internet message boards such as Jeepforum. Com, Jeepsunlimited. Com, or Jeepin. Com and do a search. You will find a suprizing number of results.

Fuel pump failed and was replaced on 9/5/02. Picked up Jeep and it broke down on the way home. Was towed back to shop. Replaced fuel pump 5 more times in the past 2 months and have been noticing a strong petrol smell. Last time the mechanics told me to pick up the Jeep it wouldn't even start and the petrol smell continued. Now told by manager at the Chrysler shop that an internal memo was issued in 1997 stating that 1996 Cherokees had already started having problems with the fuel system, including faulty fuel pump systems and corroded fuel tanks. They said that they don't know what else to do other than replace the fuel tank at my cost. Chrysler is holding true to character and insists that a Jeep with so many miles (it's a '96 with only 58k miles) will have lots of problems. They do not seem to think it is strange that such a memo was issued detailing corrosion in the tanks of a high percentage of '96 Jeeps only one year after manufacturing date. Am worried about the smell of fuel in the car and safety in the event of a side impact accident. Dt.
Having trouble with starting the car due to when car is parked on an incline the car is not getting enough gas. When driving it also feels as if the car is not getting enough gas even when the tank is full. Just found someone that will change the fuel filter and check the fuel pump. Every other place has denied doing the job due to the fuel filter and fuel pump is on top of the gas tank.
Three failures in 99 days. Factory new part each time. Deadly. No safety defect mentioned.
Jeep was parked outside tire center waiting for technician to put the new tires on. Technician came out, and saw smoke from under the hood. Fire was put out, Chrysler investigator couldn't find the cause. *akchrysler later found a fuel leak.

Vehicle experienced fire, it appears to have been caused by a faulty fuel line, claim 06-5384-812.
This particular model was suppose to come from the manufacturer with a plastic fuel tank. For some reason mine came with a metal fuel tank that corroded very quickly, beyond what would normally be expected for year and mileage. This corrosion led to the failure of the original fuel pump assembly and the failure of the replacement fuel pump assembly. The aaa person who towed my vehicle mentioned that he has towed a number of Jeep Cherokees with the same problem.
Hearsay is that there were two other Jeep Cherokees being fixed for the same problem at the same time. No safety defect mentione din summary.
As I have reported, I have had numerous serious issues with this vehicle and I do not feel it is a safe car. This vehicle has also been recalled twice, for front brake rotors and defective air bag module, (replaced and moved from under the passanger seat front to under the console). I have contacted Chrysler corp. With this same information and my feelings that this vehicle is not safe and am awaiting a reply. I do not expect any monetary or new vehicle etc. , I'm just reporting the safety problems I have had with this vehicle to any and all agencies to have something on record. I wish to state also that the dealership I bought this vehicle from have been very accomodating and there has never been a problem with them at any time.
No summary( dot number: tire size: 235/75/15 ).
A fuel leak was experienced because the fuel line had disconnected.
