Tank Mounting Problems of Jeep Cherokee

The contact owns a 1997 Jeep Cherokee sport. While driving approximately 35 mph the contact noticed the fuel gauge reading fluctuating. The contact stated he was unable to determine the accurate amount of fuel in the vehicle. The vehicle was included under NHTSA campaign id number: 97v194000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly) and had repairs performed prior to the contact assuming ownership of the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

Fuel gauge displays inaccurate amount of fuel in tank. Dealer was notified and a new fuel sending unit was installed. . Consumer also stated while driving, the vehicle began starting and stopping, the vehicle was taken to the dealership and the fuel pump was replaced.

The gas gauge doesn't show how much gas I have most of the time. The gauge floats back and forth from empty to half empty, or doesn't register the proper amount when I put gas in the tank.

Failure of the gas hose, the gas hose rubbed against the axle, causing a hole in the gas line. Ak.

Six days after fuel gauge repair the strap holding the tank broke allowing tank to dangle. Brake failure and steering malfunction.
