Jeep Cherokee owners have reported 80 problems related to tank assembly (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Cherokee based on all problems reported for the Cherokee.
Took vehicle to mechanic shop as I kept smelling gas . Especially when I fill my tank with gas. At first I thought it was incidental but the smell was confirmed as the mechanic checked my car he discovered a gas leak from the gas tank! he said this is very unusual as the hose housed on the tank is built into the tank and this usually lasts the life of the car. How does something like this happen? no accidents, have not run over any sharp objects etc. . .

Consumer writes in regards to engineering analysis on 1993- 2001 Jeep Cherokee the consumer stated, NHTSA is conducting an engineering analysis on 1993-2001 model year Jeep Cherokee's due to potential, extraordinary fire and explosion hazards. Apparently, these hazards stem from the fact that the Cherokee's fuel tank is located near the rear axle, making it vulnerable to rear-end collisions. The consumer would like to know, why is the analysis only limited to 1993-2001 when his 1991 model has the same fuel tank location.
Sporadic gas leak from fuel pump hookup on gas tank at startup. Could not be duplicated except at random occurrences.

Car stalls unexpectedly. This seems to occur most often when making a left turn and when the gas tank is at 1/2 tank of gas or less. Ongoing problem for years.
Fuel gauge reads incorrectly. The gauge light comes on and off when the fuel level is anywhere below 1/2 tank. Not sure how much gas is in the vehicle unless it is topped off. There was a recall 97v194000 for the fuel sending units, however this vehicle was not included due to VIN.
Plastic gas tank warped where fuel level sending unit is located on top of tank. Car was parked in garage overnight after a fill up. Next morning gasoline was noted on floor of garage which could have resulted in fire. Dealer stated tank warped in heat of d. C. Weather. Replacement cost was $800. I wonder if other similar eight-year old Jeep products will begin to show this failure, which could be the beginning of a dangerous situation for unsuspecting owners of Jeep vehicles with plastic gas tanks. Gas tanks aren't supposed to fail after only eight years of use.
Nhtsa recall 97v194000 subject/fuel level sending unit. After having the fuel level sending unit replaced oil was leaking from the fuel tank. Vehicle was taken back to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic could not duplicate the problem.
When the vehicle was fueled the needle registered at a half a tank of fuel but the vehicle would suddenly stop running. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The dealer informed the consumer that the problem was with the fuel sending unit sending false readings to the gas gauge.
While driving approximately 65 mph with out any warning vehicle stalled. Vehicle was towed to the dealer, and the technician indicated the fuel tank disintegrated and clog the fuel line. Fuel tank was replaced at owner expense of $1. 000.
Fuel tank indicator is giving false readings. The vehicle appeared to be stalling, it was refueled and was given no diagnosis at the gas station. The vehicle stopped responding to the pressing of the gas pedal for an unknown reason, the vehicle was refueled but was still given no diagnosis. The vehicle stopped again without warning in the middle of the street, obtained emergency fuel, then it was obvious that there was a fuel problem. (the fuel level registered wrong) the 20 gallon gas tank gets 15 to 18 mpg. The fuel level registers 7/8 tank after driving 100 miles currently. Both the manufacturer and the dealer refused to pay for repair and denied the recall #97v194000 .
When fuel tank level is a quarter or less and while turning left at a traffic light vehicle runs out of gas and engine shuts off. After coasting through light and straighting out line of travel, several seconds of restart attempts eventually restart engine. Vehicle continues on normally.

I had to replace my front rotors at 35,000 - Chrysler said it's normal wear and tear and wouldn't fix them. There was a problem with a seal on the gas tank. I brought it in for service at least 4 or 5 times before it was fixed. A $2. 00 wire broke inside the front door for the front speaker at 43,000 miles and they charged me $200. 00 to fix it. The salesman sold me a convenience package that was purported as an extended warranty, but was actually a towing and rental car package.

Consumer received a recall letter 97v194000 concerning the fuel level, but dealer did not recognize the letter. The fuel was not reliable. The dealer admitted that there was a recall, but said that the consumer's vehicle wasn't included.
About 6 months after the consumer purchased the vehicle it stalled and failed to restart. Consumer pushed vehicle to the nearest gas station and filled the gas tank and the vehicle started. The gas guage read 1/3. Consumer stated there was a recall on the fuel sending unit but, the vehicle identification number was not included.
The fuel gauge did not work correctly.
97 v 194 000/fuel level sending unit: the vehicle was no longer operative because the fuel sending unit failed, there was a recall regarding the issue, however consumer was informed the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.
97 v 194 000/fuel level sending unit: the vehicle was no longer operative, because the fuel sending unit failed, there was a recall regarding the issue, however consumer was informed the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.
Consumer states while driving and with no warning the fuel indicator will read the wrong reading and the consumer will think there is more gas in the vehicle. Dealer notified ts. Consumer was informed there was a recall, however vehicle did not apply.
Gas tank has a hole on top of tank and is leaking gasoline. Dealer has been notified.

Fuel tank began to spontaneously leak from the top when filling the tank completely full. Dealership removed tank, inspected, and found no evidence of damage or wear and had no explanation for the leak. Just as with complaint odi 755138, dealer could not duplicate the problem. They speculate that the tank may be deforming under load (I. E. , a full tank of fuel) causing the leak. If true, this would suggest structural failure or material defect of the tank as suggested in odi 755138. In summary, the problem is essentially identical to odi 826441.
Vehicle leaks gas. When the gas tank is full, the gasoline would leak out until it was under 3/4 of a tank.
This vehicle has the same problem with the fuel sender unit as stated in recall 97 v 194 002. However, this vehicle was not covered under recall because it was manufactured 13 days after recall manufacturing date. Consumer adds vehicle ran out of gas twice while on the highway and had to be towed.
While vehicle is running, a severe fuel odor/fumes are getting into vehicle. The gas tank seal at the top does not seem to seal properly. Chrysler was notified.
I had purchased a 1998 Jeep Cherokee new from the dealer. Several times I brought it in while under warranty to have it repaired because the car would cut out, stall and become sluggish. They were never able to rectify the problem, or in some cases they just stated they could not duplicate the problem. Of course after the warrantee ran out by time and miles the car went dead on me and I was advised the problem was in the fuel tank. The fuel tank is design such that it deteriorates and plugs the fuel pump over a period of time. I learned this through parts suppliers who were unwilling to give a guarrantee on their pumps knowing the tank would continue to deteriorate and plug the pump. The dealer told me he wanted over one thousand dollars to replace the tank because of the deterioration. He refused to replace only the fuel pump and told me the tank was defective. Of course the Chrysler corporation refused to warrantee the product after the time and miles were up. My question is this: if the fuel tank is deteriorating because of a design fault is that a safety problem. I myself having a limited mechanical backgroud would think so. These tanks are deteriorating in thousands of vehicles and Chrysler is well aware of the problem. I don't think there is any doubt a fuel tank is a critical part of a vehicle, and I don't think Jeep is going to con thousands of consumers into changing their fuel tanks. At this time I need a vehicle to drive and I am going to replace my fuel pump not the tank. However if this is a safety concern why isn't Jeep voluntarily taking care of it. Please let me know where I stand with this issue. Thank you. Brendan finnerty.
A report aired on local television station that informed consumer that a problem was found in all model year Jeeps concering fuel tank not being properly placed. Please provide further details.
Fuel tank is warped and has caused fuel to leak. Consumer was told by the dealer that when they replaced fuel pump they did not torque the screws properly and that caused the tank to warp and leak.
Ran out of fuel, gauge showed 1/4 tank, narrowly avoided collision on interstate in 65 mph traffic, third failure; also have multiple times when dashboard guages go blank while driving.
Fuel guage reads that tank has a quarter of gas when it was on empty. This caused consumer to run out of gas without notice. Dealer has been contacted.
We brought the vehicle to lehighton motors in lehighton, PA and they were not able to detect the problm so we were fitted with a black box and were told to drive around and activate the black box when the problem happened. This was a dangerous situation for us. They changed both O2 sensors. The problem persisted, and they decided that the fuel tank sensor package needed replacement. All this cost bout $800. 00 for parts that were in a car with 35,000 miles, and it put us in seriously dangerous circumstances. We contcted daimler/Chrysler for relief, but to no avail. Please investigate this situation.
Fuel light does not come on when vehicle needs gas, runs out of gas at a quarter tank. The fuel warning light failed while consumer was traveling.
Gas gauge indicates that there is more gas in tank than there actually is. Also, more fuel in reservoir than indicated. Once vehicle ran out of gas in middle of the road. The manufacturer stated that this vehicle was not included in recall 97v194000.
I feel all these falures are related. The fuel indication happened first on 10/16/00 but the rest was on the dates indicated. I have noticed factory recalls for these problem for my year Jeep, but my VIN supposedly does not require any service. I am dissapionted in Jeep since this is happening so close to the warranteed time.
First , this car was bought brand new with my ex-husband, nicolas jonville. We bought the car in October, 1997, from a Jeep dealer in des plaines, illinois. It was a sales done through International autosource. We then brought the car out to California. Since June, 2000, this car has expeienced O2 sensor problems, exhaust manifold crack, spring defective attached to right front shock, and fuel tank accuracy problem. I have a three year old child and drive this car just to take her to pre-sechool and shopping. I work out of the home. I believe the problems I have experienced in one years time are abundant. I don't drive daily into los angeles or san diego, California. I drive barely 20 miles a day. I do believe these problems do cause safetly problems for my daughter and myself. I have fears of stalling due to fuel problems. I have fears of hitting something that affect the spring on the highway and getting in a bad accident. I now have fears of driving the car long distances since the exhaust manifold crack caused me to eat too much gas. The car is only over three years old. I want some answers and will sending this information further with certified documentations of my letters, my reviews of mechanic views and the dealers documentation. The dealer has been non-supportive of fixing any of my problems without paying a high price when I believe these are manufacturer problesms.
Vehicle has experienced two recall component failures prior to notification (00v-136) and (97v-194), brake rotors and the fuel gauge.
