Gas tank leak. After filling, went shopping. Came out of store and police and fire department around vehicle. Tank leaking. Vechicle serviced and tank previously removed by dealer to remedy 'fuel sending unit' recall. Dealer fails to recognize any responsibility. Called crysler and they say they have no problems but I can see other reported incidents posted on this webb site.

Fuel is leaking from fuel tank. There is a recall, but this vehicle is not included due to VIN. Recall 97v-194. 002.

Received notice #97v194002. Contacted dealer & took vehicle in. Picked up vehicle & dealer called to have vehicle returned due to a fuel leak. Happened 3 different times. Picking up vehicle & returning for corrective problem of fuel system.

When I called a Jeep dealer to report that my 1998 Jeep Cherokee had just stopped running on a very busy street, he said right away that my fuel sending unit must have failed and that, although my gas gauge showed 1/4 tank of gas remaining, I was out of gas. He was so adament about this that he must have seen the same problem in other 1998 Cherokees. I have also heard of other 1998 Cherokees with the same problem. Since crown Chrysler (not the selling dealer) replaced the fuel sending unit, my gas gauge now drops from 1/2 to empty and I'm worried enough to drive right to a service station. The gauge is apparently still defective, as filling up the tank at these times requires only 8 gallons. I'm a single woman who has to drive at night and I don't feel safe with a gas gauge I can't trust.

Consumer received recall notice 97v194002. Recall was repaired by dealership. However, after repairs, consumer has had to have repair work performed one more time. Consumer states fuel gauge seems defective again. Air bag module and reposition module replaced.

Vehicle leaking fuel due to a crack in fuel tank. Whenever vehicle is turned on,causing a large amount of fuel to be waisted for possible fire.

Consumer has exprienced problem with large amount of fuel leakages due to a crack in fuel tank. Whenever vehicle is turned on, causing a large amount of fuel to be waisted on the ground. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire. Dealer not notified at this time.

Difficulty having fuel tank sending unit repaired under recall due to unvailability of parts. Prior to recall fuel tank sending unit failed and replaced, however not with proper recall component part.

The problem started with the fuel sensor after a federal mandated recall was posted, I have had the part replaced three times under the recall notice and the issue is still not resolved.

Consumer complained of a manufacturer's recall repair failure. Consumer took vehicle to dealer to have fuel level sending unit replaced. Currently, whenever vehicle fuel gauge is used, it registers between empty and 1/8 of the tank. Consumer put in 4 gallons of gas, approximately $5. 00 of fuel into tank, but fuel gauge registered 1/2 tank of gas. This was not correct. Informed dealer, and deale replied that it was normal.

When driving at any speed and making a left turn consumer loses power when gas tank gets down to a quarter of a tank of gas.

Fuel gauge failed.

Ran out of fuel in rush hour traffic, but the fuel gauge showed 1/4 tank. The reading had been accurate prior to this incident, and has been inaccurate since. Could have been involved in an accident. Jeep has a recall due to this problem, for this model year, but my VIN is not covered. I propose that the vins covered is not sufficient, other vehicles are having the same dangerous problem.

Consumer can only put $15. 00 of gas in a 20 gallon tank any more it will leak out of the back underneath the Jeep. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Had called dealership after receiving recall notice #97v194002, fuel sending unit. Dealership had no parts, and did not know when they would be available. Would contact owner when parts come in. Also, gas gauge malfunctioned, caused vehicle to run out of gas twice.

Initial fuel tank assembly failure 5/98 occurred at freeway speeds on highway overpass 680/24 walnut creek, CA. Vehicle ran out of gas even though gauge indicated fuel level above 1/8 tank. Created hazardous traffic backup for several miles on southbound interstate 680 requiring police assistance. Subsequent problems with replacement fuel tank assemblies 3/29/99 and 8/30/99, currently unresolved. Transmission failure affected drivability requiring replacement 8/30/99. Began experiencing dangerous engine and electrical problems, including abrupt check engine light preceding engine bucking, severe engine surging, followed by loss of power, near stall at 35 mph, radio and power window failure 8/23/99, creating hazardous situation for vehicle occupants and other drivers on road. The fuel assembly fuse failure on 11/1/99 occurred at freeway speed in rush hour traffic on eastbound highway 4 in martinez near pacheco blvd. Off-ramp with absolutely no warning. Loss of engine, power steering, power brakes at this speed and traffic conditions created potential for fatal collision involving multiple vehicles. Vehicle at lehmer's dealership from 11/1/99-11/5/99. Dealership failed to duplicate, locate, or repair failure. Vehicle released on 11/5/99. The second fuel system fuse failure occurred without warning on 11/6/99, on westbound ygnacio valley, a secondary 4 lane road at 45 mph speed, again creating a potentially hazardous situation. Police called to prevent possible collisions while waiting for tow. Due to these recurring and unresolved service problems we have lost all faith in the safety of this vehicle. We refuse to put our family or other drivers at risk and wish to file a formal complaint with the NHTSA and to pursue resolution of this matter under the lemon law. We purchased this vehicle in good faith, but cannot in good conscience sell it or trade it in due to the potential for loss of life in its current condition.

Recall remedy did not sufficiently correct the problem which has reoccurred. The fuel level sending unit is not registering the correct levels of fuel . Also every time stop there is a laud gurgling sound comes from the gas tank. Recall number 97v-194. 002. . Et.

Gas gauge failed. Yh.

Vehicle ran out of fuel with fuel gauge indicating more than 1/4 tank remaining and low fuel indicator did not illuminate.

Fuel gauge would be showing fuel in vehicle when vehicle runs out of gas. Had vehicle towed to dealer & was informed that manufacturer knows about problem. While driving, vehicle stalled due to running out of gas, the fuel gauge listed that the vehicle had more than 1/4 tank left.

Fuel leaks heavily when fuel tank is filled at station and for next 10-15 minutes.

Fuel assembly leading to fuel tank was disconnected from fuel tank causing fuel to go in tank but allowed fuel to overflow from top of tank.

When driving at highway speed the vehicle cuts off due to the fuel gauge which indicated the vehicle had half a tank of fuel which nearly caused an accident, consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has yet to replace any parts.

The fuel tank gauge shows fuel tank has gas when the fuel tank is empty. Appointment is scheduled for 8/25/97 to correct problem. Service dealer has knowledge that this is a problem.

First incident: fuel tank was full and needle went to empty. Dealer replaced fuel sending unit. Second: ran out of gas with gauge at 1/4 tank. Dealer replaced fuel sending unit. Third: fuel gauge drops to empty from 1/4 tank and bounces back and forth. Dealer replaced fuel sending unit. Fourth: fuel gauge inacurate. Needle shows different level when the same amount of gas is put in. Dealer replaced fuel sending unit and fuel gauge cluster. Fifth: fuel gauge drops from 1/4 to empty. Seeking arbitration.

Front end misalignment/front brake failure/gas tank leak/ fuel gauge failure.

Dealership did not perform recall (97v-194) for the consumer, which failed and caught the vehicle on fire. (anton azar writing in for consumer).

Fuel gauage does not register the correct levels of fuel, cause unknown. Please give any further details.

The actual fuel reading indicates more fuel than is actually present. Consumer also noted that NHTSA recall 97v194002/manufacturer's 755 concerns the same type of problem. Dealer and manufacturer state that this vehicle is not included in recall. Dealer replacing the fuel tank sending unit. Please provide any further details.

A fuel leak. Recall 00v159000 was issued for the fuel tank vent tube welds; but, this vehicle was not included in recall due to VIN.

When the gas gauge was at a quarter tank, the vehicle stalled at highway speed.

The vehicle hesitated when consumer tried to start it, the dealership indicated the problem was caused by the gas tank which had disintegrated and clogged up the fuel lines.

Recall # 97v19402, fuel tank sending unit. Consumer received first notice in March and second notice in June . The dealer will not make an appointment for recall repairs because they claim to be too busy since March.
