18 problems related to automatic transmission column shift have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the gear shift box was bumped and the vehicle shifted out of gear. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was to be inspected, diagnosed and repaired. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 149,000.
The vehicle suddenly rolled backwards and hit a parked vehicle, consumer stated there was a recall regarding the issue, however it only included 1993-1998 models. Mr.
Rotors are shot and it seems I'm not the only one, 4 wheel drive will not disengage even after I shift it out of 4 wheel drive (large popping noise when it does disengage). Rear wiper works sometimes and othertimes it won't. Now I'm being told the transfer case is leaking and needs to be replaced (seal and shaft). At 53,000 miles these items seem ridculous. I've checked around on the internet and it seems like others have the same problems.
Key could not be taken out of ignition because of shifter not locking in the park position. Shifter would move form park to reverse and drive without depressing the button on the shifter. Usually, this has to be held in to shift in and out of gears. But now it will shift gears if it is even bumped.
What a lemon! we are averaging $2000/year in repairs. Power windows that stop working, water pump breaks, brake rotors need replacing before brakes wear out, leaking differential, transmission, and now we're told by dealer service department we need a new transfer case. Whoever designed/built/sold this vehicle doesn't have much pride in their workmanship.
When shifting vehicle in reverse it makes a loud noise and vehicle jerks. Dealership replaced tranfer case twice, and rebuiltd the driveshaft. The vehicle would not start due to fuel pump failure. Driver side wiper blade was worn out. Rear differntial was worn, also the rotors were replaced, the fule injection was serviced cleaned the throttle body, power steering fluid was serviced, tires were rotated, pinion bearings, front axles seals replaced.
On three occasions vehicle has rolled from park position while parked. Also, noticed shifter could be moved without applying the brakes. Dealer notified and unwilling to help in this matter: feel free to provide any further details on this on this matter. .
Rear differential leaking due to failure of the transfer case.
Rear suspension squeaks on drop-off/body roll movements; transmission gear linkage scrubs into park.
Have experienced numerous quality problems including the 4 wheel drive grinding and jumping, window function problems, rear washerhose leak into rear compartment, rough transmission into reverse from park, oil gauge failure and engine clicking noise during acceleration. Dealer on many occasions says they are normal for the truck to experience and not to worry. I don't believe them.
Intermittently when shifting from park to reverse vehicle will surge forward. Dealer has replaced transfer case. Chain inside transfer case and modulating valve. However, problem still exists.
When new . . . Front shudder-transfer case seal leaks. . . Repair 4 times-transfer case whine and grind. . . Dealer checked and reported no trouble found several times. . . Finally failed after warranty at my cost of $1700 to repair-rear end repaired 4 times and problem turned out to be friction modifiers in quadra drive system-front rotors turned twice at my expense.
The bulk of the problems the car has were recognized before 583 miles. The engine stalls when driving in stop and go traffic. The problem seems to be magnified if the car goes from high speeds to an idle . The car begins to idle below 500rpm and then dies. After being in to reprogram several times, now the vehicle is hard to start, it takes from 5-10 seconds to start. The car has transfer case problems that make the car shudder at low speeds when turning. Trying to fix that issue created a leak from the transfer case. The car also has a hollow grinding noise or resonance at 1200rpm in 1st gear while under a load. The car has been serviced six times. These issues still remain.
Our 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee is 4 months old and is nothing but trouble; the transfer case was replaced, the car makes a grinding noise at highway speeds and the dealer thought the replacement of the transfer case would solve the problem. It didn't however. Furthermore the gear oil had to be replaced because the car would buck and even stall sometimes when I would make tight turn. Furthermore the transmission is sometimes clunking. Our power window needs a new motor. The car keeps on pulling to the right and that still hasn't been fixed. We have been very disappointed and wish the lemon law would be a little bit more protective of consumers than car dealers and manufacturers.
While driving on highway vehicle started making a screeching sound, vehicle just started to stall. When driver pulled over, transmission quit. Driver placed car in park, stepped out, and vehicle started to roll backwards due to transfer case locking up. Dealer said transfer case and transmission needed to be replaced.
Four wheel drive (quadra-drive) experiences excessive noise.
The car has been out of service nineteen days since 11/99. In three times for three windows being inoperable. Front brakes needing to be scuffed and new rotors on four different ocassions. Transfer fluid changed from turning noise on four different occasion and transfer case pump being replaced when in stock. Fuel pump replaced 16,000 mi. Ac problems, worn tires, battery replaced at 19,788.
At 4,000 miles while driving at speed over 40 mph, applying brakes to slow down, steering whell and tires will shake back and forth. 2. The vehicle will get stuck in 4- wheel drive.
