Nine problems related to automatic transmission control module have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I would like to know why Jeep/Chrysler has not done any recalls or fixes involving the powertrain control module (pcm) since it is a known issue with Grand Cherokees?!!! instead they want customers to go out and spend approximately $200+ for a new one and even more $$ to have dealer install it. I love my Jeep don't get me wrong, but Jeep dropped the ball big on this one. Just about as bad as the gas tank issue.
The contact owns a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 60 mph, the engine stalled. The contact had to quickly pull the vehicle off the road to avoid a crash. While his daughter was traveling up an on-ramp, the vehicle stalled and was unable to be restarted. By the time the contact arrived to assist, the vehicle was able to be restarted. The failure also occurred while driving 40 mph. The contact replaced the fuel filter himself before calling the dealer to inquire about NHTSA campaign id number 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)). The VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 110,000 and current mileage was 120,000.
Without warning the vehicle shut down. This happened at any speed and any weather. Dealer said it was the power control module (pcm), and the part was on back order. Manufacturer said they couldn't do anything to speed up the process and were trying to get the parts to the dealer as quick as possible. The consumer was on waiting list for part. The consumer was concerned about family when driving and car shuts off. The consumer said car takes about 5 minutes f to start back up, sometimes longer. Replacement of part was not included in any maintenance schedule.
Engine dies at any speed without warning and without illuminating the check engine light. No error codes are stored. It acts as if someone just turned the ignition key to off and all of the gauges on the instrument panel are zeroed to the left but everything else electrical still works, starter, power windows, radio, horn, lights, power-seats, etc. Etc. . This tends to happen more often on warm days, over 88 degrees f and seems to be a shutdown of the pcm which controls the fuel pump, fuel injectors and the ignition system. When the pcm shuts down, it drops output to pcm's computer bus called the ccd. I changed the parts that the dealer wanted to change like the fuel pump, crank and cam sensors and cleaned a host of other sensors but the problem remains. The problem is with the pcm. The dealer denies coverage because the mileage has just crept over 80,000 miles although I began discussing it with them and buying parts from them back on March 5, 2005. This is an extremely dangerous condition that warrants the pcm, p/n rl044427ac through aj, on the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee be recalled.
Having problems with the rear end and transfer case problems. Also stated that the vehicle has been taken to a specialist for the transfer case and rear end and they have stated that they will quit working on that type of vehicle because they are coming with to many defective problems. Dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle is out warranty. Manufacture was also contacted and stated that they don't have any type of problems with the vehicles. Ts.
Several times prior to complete power failure, vehicle decelerated on its own with a small jar as if tapped from rear, then @ 45 mph I lost complete power, no steering ability, power brakes gone, coasted to stop. No indicator lights prior to power loss, turned off a/c, radio etc. Vehicle re-started. I took to dealer next day. They had it for 3 days, & only replaced battery. Picked up vehicle on 6/28 & 6/30 vehicle shut down @ 45-50 mph same scenario, took back to dealer and they replaced module-powertrain control. Picked up 07/03, drove less than 10 mi & vehicle started the deceleration problem again.
Vehicle has been to dealer 5 times now for very rough idle, engine sag, idle undershoot, etc. Pcm has been reprogrammed with current software, etc. Dealer called Chrysler and was told no fix is available for this condition. Vehicle shakes and tries to die. Very unsafe to drive as may die when trying to pull out. Dealer basically says Chrysler knows of the problem but won't fix it properly.
Transmission seems to shift very rough from 2nd to 3rd. If driving at speeds around that shift window (20-30), rough kick in back end like getting hit from the rear. Transmission also seems to stall the engine on sharp turns. This has happened to me at least 3 times in the last couple months. Vehicle has been in to dealer for first complaint at least twice. No error codes detected in pcm either time. Dealer went ahead and reloaded software, but did not solve problem. Also reported problem to mfg, who recommended taking vehicle to local dealer. Local dealer can't fix though. Chrysler not helping with problem.
On 3 different occasions vehicle jumped into reverse from park. Engine was on. Please add additional information.
