Driveshaft problems of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

23 problems related to driveshaft have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2003

Purchased a Jeep grand cehrokee last October. In December I had to have the rotors replaced within 1,000 miles of the original replacement, the rotors warped again. I replaced the rotors again in March, by July the rotors had once again warped. The brake company who replaced the rotors both times with new factory parts will not award the waranty of the rotors. They said it is a problem with the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokees and not their products. I am forced to again pay to have the rotors replaced. This is the third time in less then a year. I have never had this problem with another vehicle I have owned. In addition, the car exhibits a "stop and bump" every time the vehicle comes to a stop. I have seen this problem addressed with the drive shafts, but apparently even replacing this part, does not cause the vehicle to stop this behavior. Lastly, the vehicle is hard to shift from second to third gears. I did not expect to have this many problems with a vehicle first of all that costs this much and secondly that is so new. I am extremely dissappointed.

2 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2003

Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. When driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. Consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. Then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. Also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. Recall campaign; component: fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. The consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. The consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. Fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. The consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. When sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. The left outer cv boot was leaking. The engine light came on. The consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear.

3 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2002

Clunking and groaning when shifting; drivetrain whins at deceleration; originally, continuous drivetrain whine and loud harmonic drone at speeds over 75 miles per hour - after repairs faint/ continuous clicking noise at approximately 75-83 mph with continuous drive train whine and loud harmonic drone at speeds of 83 mph and above. Three trips to dealer for repairs to date (between July 2 and July 26) with each trip lasting approximately one week. Owner has driven vehicle for no more than 7 contiguous days without having to leave with dealership for repairs and during this "drive time" has had to make numerous trips back to the dealer in order for notification/ negotiation on repairs, diagnosis, actual repairs, etc. Purchase was made contingent upon dealership making full and complete diagnosis and repairs to drivetrain with warranty of all for a one year period; with all costs to dealer. Dealer now is attempting to back out of written agreement - however, negotiations are still being held towards repairs.

4 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2002

Driveshaft is binding. This is the second shaft to need replacing. The 1st occurred at 27000 miles, and was replaced under warranty.

7 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2000

When shifting vehicle in reverse it makes a loud noise and vehicle jerks. Dealership replaced tranfer case twice, and rebuiltd the driveshaft. The vehicle would not start due to fuel pump failure. Driver side wiper blade was worn out. Rear differntial was worn, also the rotors were replaced, the fule injection was serviced cleaned the throttle body, power steering fluid was serviced, tires were rotated, pinion bearings, front axles seals replaced.

8 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2000

First, brake related problems: mileage 2341 complaint pulsatting when stopping 20-55 mph , front brake rotors were resurfaced , complaint 2 mileage 16040 brakes pulsatting when stopping also shimmy in steering 45-55 mph, front brake rotors were replaced reason warpage due to overheating design flaw? / complaint 3 mileage 17000, brakes pulsatting , vibaration in vehicle and steering wheel shimmy when brake are applied. Have not rportedto dealer at this time will schedule for week of 07/16/01. Secondly, transmission shift problems: started when vehicle was brand new when stopping it felt like someone was hitting you in the rear end. First repair ,mileage 4428 consisted of tsb0300799 and replacement of rear driveshaft, also rear axle carrier and pinion bearings were replaced. Second transmission repair mileage 10453 due to harsh shiffting @ 20 mph and again when stopping it felt like someone ran into the rear of the vehicle, this time the transmission yoke was replaced and another transmission update per tsb21-09-00,also during this service the front driveshaft was replaced due to a howling noise which started around 55-60 mph, complaint three mileage 10818 vehicle still has whining noise coming from drive train. In addittion, transmission problems continue with harsh shifting at times at 20 mph and 50-55mph,these shift points worsen as other problems were being corrected, dealer claims that thhis is adaptive memory and their nothing that will be done to correct it. According to casey Jeep service manager daimlerchrysler does not see this as a problem only an issue. Fourth complaint mileage 16040 transmission continues to shift hard at times @ 20 mph and 50-55 mph. At this time dealer show no concern in correcting this problem . In summary, brake and drive train problems with this vehicle starting at 2341 miles, and they continue be on-going. I now question the safety of this vehicle.

9 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2000

The vehicle has now had four (4) rear ring gear and pinions, four(4) sets of rear bearings, one rear yoke, two (2) sets of front ring gear and pinions, two(2) sets of bearings, one front yoke, one front drive shaft replaced since it came from the factory. It has never been in four wheel drive or driven off road. It has had one tire replaced due to vibration that would not balance (r. Front), the electric windows have been repaired two (2) times and the transmission will not engage if the vehicle sits for 3 days or longer (has not been repaired). The dealer has been very good about doing all repairs (can not duplicate transmission problem). We are concerned about the number of times the ring gear and pinions and all bearings have been replaced and the potential safety issue regarding a possible axle comming out while driving. Also not sure if this qualifies for a "lemon law".

10 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 11/25/1999

No summary.

11 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 11/24/1999

At 45+ mph a groan noise that is there when pushing accelorator - dealer replace differntial gear twice still have noise; noise at 72 dealer replaced rear drive shaft, ball joint, and other drive line compents - this reduced noise but it is still there; after doing all this now have noise in rear at 20mph (grinding in differential?) also a noise in front that is hard to describe.

12 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 10/07/1999

Transmission replaced at 2200 mi, persistent driveability problems.

13 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 10/02/1999

Problems with the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee's driveshaft are well-known among Jeep owners, but many dealers, and apparently the manufacturer, are failing to be forthcoming in providing fixes or an official recall. Driveshaft on this vehicle binds under many driving conditions, making loud "clunking" noises and resulting in unsafe vehicle "lurching" as the driveshaft binds/unbinds. The dealer's first attempt to fix the problem was only temporary - it reappeared within two weeks. Dealer now promises a factory fix "sometime in January" - a totally unacceptable response.

14 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 07/01/1999

No summary listed for above vehicle.

15 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 06/15/1999

While making a sharp turn vehicle would shake / vibrate, causing loss of control. Also, driveshaft yoke assembly failed. Seeking help from NHTSA in this matters, the power train differential unit makes whine noise between 54-65 mph.

16 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 04/01/1999

Rear-back window leaked, reseal failed, had to remove window and reseal, took 4 days. Front differential failed causing front tires to hop during tight turns, diff replaced took 3 days. When stopped at a stop light truck lurches forward almost as if hit from behind, this happens 1 sometimes 2 times at one stoplight, engine revs also increase when this happens, dealer cannot fix. Gas tank is very hard to fill the pump stops before it is full and many times gas spills all over truck and pavement causing a fire hazzard, also gas cap is very hard to remove.

17 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 03/15/1999

After coming to a complete stop with the air conditioner off, the vehicle will lunge forward. Consumer has determined the cause as the releasing of tension within the driveshaft. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer stated normal operation . Please provide any further details.

18 Driveshaft problem

None of these things have been fixed to date. Dealer was given 2 chances and kept saying they could not see anything. Took to another dealer & they said drive shaft, brakes, pinion & gear, back glass all needed replaced. Would not work on vehicle because of dealer fraud. Bought oct. 1999 new. Had been in service since sept. 1998. Did not want to get involved. No safety defect listed in the summary.

19 Driveshaft problem

Vehicle has an unbearably loud whine in drivetrain. Constant in steady rpm, increaces with deceleration. After complete warmup (20+miles) noise becomes more metalic, or grinding. Dealer has tried changing front drive shaft, insulating coolant lines, changing ring gear and pinion, and changing valves in trans. None worked.

20 Driveshaft problem

Rotors on front brakes overheating and warping. . Dealer cannot seem to solve problem even by replacing with new rotors. Terrible vibration when braking. Also transmission makes a loud clunking sound when stopped and shifting. Last item is that front tires are cupping. . . Dealer stated that is because the vehicle has full time 4 wheel drive.

21 Driveshaft problem

Hello NHTSA, I am writing to file a complaint about my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Immediately following the purchase (not lease) of my gc, my wife and I noticed a strong jolt in the rear end of the vehicle whenever we came to a stop. I brought our vehicle back to our dealership 2 times for inspection but each time my dealer, manhattan Jeep (a 5-star dealer in new york city) told us that "all of the new '99s do that" and that "all the ones with the v8 do that". That wasn't what I wanted to hear but I thought that it might go away after a few more miles. I now have over 7,000 miles on my vehicle and the problem is getting worse. I have written to customer relations at daimlerchrysler to report my problem. I do have a case number which they've assigned to me. I was told by customer relations that I should try another dealer. Since I was getting no satisfaction from customer relations, I called the sales department at difeo Chrysler in jersey city, new jersey and spoke to a sales representative. I posed as a potential buyer of a 2000 Grand Cherokee. I asked about the quality problems that the 1999 model had and I was told by the salesperson that all of the 1999s produced before September 1999 had a defective driveshaft and that they should be replaced. He assured me that the defects had been corrected for the 2000 model year. So now I have customer service denying the problem while the sales department was very well aware of the problem. I now scheduled a service appointment at bayside Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep in bayside, new york. The service department at bayside immediately knew what the problem was and I was told that I needed a new driveshaft #52099487ac. With such a large number of vechcles affected, shouldn't Jeep have notivied owners and not just dealers about the defect?.

22 Driveshaft problem

Engine stalled on the highway without warning. Dealer had to replace drive plate sensor. Problem has occurred again.

23 Driveshaft problem

The vehicle experienced the following problems: no horn, interior lights, or door locks, the abs/brakes lights were on, continuous overheating when idled, despite repeated brake work, they were still a problem, the dashlights didn't get bright as normal, hissing noise in the brakes (booster was replaced), blower motor was inoperative along with mode position (replaced blower motor resister wiring harness), front pinion seal leaked and was replaced, there was a broken bolt in the rear stabilizer bar (removed), when the vehicle was placed in drive from park, it shifted hard (replaced driveshaft), the control module was replaced, the brakes pulsated on numerous occasions (TSB was completed), the blower module was replaced, all gauges stopped working, all warning light would come on, the engine temperature climbed higher than normal (replaced the fan power transmitter), the windshield wipers had become inoperative, and the arm had broken (replaced the rear arm). The consumer requested the dealer to back the vehicle. Mr scc.
