Nine problems related to noises during shifting have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When starting the vehicle and shifting from park to drive the transmission did not feel like it engaged. After not engaging the vehicle was put in park and shifted into drive again. The transmission still did not feel like it engaged. Not being sure I started to apply the gas with no forward movement. Suddenly when the rpm's reached about 1500-2000 rpm's the vehicle engaged into drive causing my vehicle to hit the parked car in front of it. Only minor damage was done since the vehicle to the front was far enough away and I was able to stop just soon enough to only tap the forward vehicle. Since the vehicle was new there have been loud banging noises coming from the rear while stopping, after stopping and releasing the brake or without the air conditioning, while stopped and the rpm's fall below 500 rpm's. The bang sounds as if there is tension being released somewhere causing the vehicle to "lurch forward". Shifting the gear selector (from park to drive and park to reverse etc) is also creating a loud bang and very rough shift, while causing the car to again seem like it wants to "take off". To date the dealer either says he can not duplicate or what he does hear is normal.
Whenever coming to a stop, vehicle would jerk forward. Would have a whistling noise while driving. Vehicle would stall out. Also, there's a slight delay when starting vehicle & then another slight delay after shifting into drive. Took vehicle to mechanic & was informed the problem was with rack and pinion steering& needs to be corrected.
When shifting transmission gear from park to reverse there is a very loud noise and vehicle stalls.
When shifting from park to reverse, there is a long squealing noise. When we told dealer he said that is the way the Jeep's with a v8 sound. The squealing is getting longer in duration when shifting.
Rear pinion seal leaking at first oil change -took to dealer - they changed out the whole rear end -noise again in rear -took to dealer they said now it was in the front - took to different dealer - tried to fix - took back vehicle till they could get whole new front and `rear end parts in - this has been over a month ago- while waiting in line vehicle died and restarted - few days later vehicle died three times at high speed restarted but ck engine light stayed on -towed to dealer- they said they replaced crank sensor - noticed new O2 sensor as well - still waiting on other parts - passenger side window does not work - vehicle surges at constant speeds -stick shift hard to shift from park to reverse and drive and visa versa - interior lights dont come on when remote turned on to open vehicle- engine feels and sounds rough- alarm system lights go on and off by themselves- once the dealer gets the parts in I will be taking it back for the 6th time with our new complaints.

We have also had problems with the rear door, hard grind when shifting to reverse, when shifting into reverse. . . Nothing happened, whistling noise when driving over 45-50 mph. , blower problems, fowl smell after using a. C. , leak in rear window, clicking in automatic lock section, faulty speaker.
Transmission experiencing noise when shifting from "park" to "reverse", it only happen sometimes, unable to determine failure.
When shifting into "reverse" the transmission slams very hard into reverse in such a manner that I have never experienced in twenty years of driving. When it slams into reverse, it makes a loud noise and the Jeep would lunge but for my foot on the brake. I took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that this was normal on all 1999 Grand Cherokees. I question whether this is normal.
