57 problems related to differential unit have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Tie rod ends replaced . Cooling fan sensor , front wheel bearings, rear differential completely rebuilt, what's next? will never buy a Chrysler product again!!!!!!!!.
Rear axle pinion gear and bearing failure due to retaining nut backing off. If left unfounded failure of drive train and rear axle lock up would occur. Initial thought by mechanic universal joint was bad. Further investigation found retaining nut backed out, ring and pinion gear and axle bearings chewed up as result of nut backing off.
99 Jeep gc limited 30,000 miles. Replaced rear end. Replaced rotors and pads 3 times. Replace transmission sensor. Replace hood rams. Needs new front differential.
Premature rear differental failure @40,000 miles.
1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee loredo exhibits the following problems: 1) lurch when shifting from park to reverse along with a noticeable 'thump' noise 2) humming noise at highway speed (65-75 mph) that graduated into a sudden 'pop' noise. This issue caused a loud grinding noise which I am now trying to deal with. Dealership informed me that this was a common problem in 1999 and 2000 model year for rear differential due to diffential supplier to Chrysler overtorqueing differential components. 3) driver's side door lock failure.
I started hearing a grinding noise from the rear of the vehicle, and was told that the rear end had to be replaced. This included the differential unit, along with the carrier bearings, and wheel bearings.
My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (gc) limited 8 cylinder quadradrive has given me nothing but problems since I bought it in October of 2002. I had the transfer seal replaced due to it leaking, the differential makes noise, the all wheel drive does not work (all wheel drive only works in low), and the tires lock up and make a noise when I am turning. It seems that their are other 1999 Jeep gc owners out there with the same problem. How about a recall to fix this problem?.
Excessive noise from rear differential. Dealer states components within differential are coming apart and that differential needs to be re-built. My cost is going to be between $1050 and $1300 for repair. I noted several other complaints from other consumers at the NHTSA site. Dealer states its a common problem. My previous 1988 Jeep did not have this problem. Any movement by NHTSA to force a recall or some adjustment from diamler-Chrysler or am I just out of luck?.
The entire rear differential had to be replaced.
Consumer states that a noise would come from the rear end while driving at multiple speed. Vehicle taken to dealer and informed that the rear end of the vehicle needed to be replace. Feel free to provide any further information. Mr.
4 wheel drive failure on snowy incline vehicle came out of 4 wheel low , lost control of vehicle and vehicle slid backwards at least 75 to 100 ft. Into an embankment. Prior to this failure, I was coming up snowy driveway the night before and had vehicle in 4 wheel low and vehicle would not make it up hill and slid backwards on me, at that time I thought it was due to my driving however the next day it occurred again and realized that vehicle had kicked out of 4 wheel drive and only rear wheels working. Premature wearing of front brake pads and rotors causing vehicle to vibrate, shimmy and squeal when appling brakes. Dt.
Between years 3 and 5 replaced both tail light assembly units. Not covered under extended warranty. Problem starting vehicle. Took to dealer at least 5 times. Dealer kept replacing fuel pump and saying it was bad. Problem still occurs. Replaced transmission sensor. Replaced hood hydraulics. Now hearing noise from rear end at any speed. Being told by my mechanical that rear end needs to be replaced.
While driving there's a rattling noise. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated it was the differential. Please provide any further information.
There was loud noise coming from the vehicle. When taken to dealer, dealer replaced differential.
Vehicle has several jerks when decelerating and accelerating. Brake rotors(4) had to be replaced. Brake pads also had to be replaced. U-joint replaced. Ring gear and pinion problems. Transmission jerking. Sunroof vibrations when sunroof is open. Overall a nightmare of a vehicle purchase.
Seal on rear differential was leaking, had to be replaced. Front bearings were replaced. Front wheel hubs were replaced, consumer states basically, the front and rear axles were replaced.
My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo had a new differential install edat 15,000 miles; two new front rotors at 36,000 and should have been done way before this; back brake drum cracked at 36,000 miles; front rotors redone again at 42000 miles; and now the motor at 52,000 miles. We had not indication (noise, etc) of the motor going, I was traveling aroung 5-10 miles per hour turning into our road and it felt like something heavy dropped out of the vehicle, it sounded like metal going through a fan. A piece of the block fell out onto the road and the people at the local dealer said they had never seen any thing like it before. It was like a bomb went off inside the motor. My question -- should chyrsler be responsible for this motor, it will be in the range of $6,000. Thank you.
There is a loud noise coming from the drive train of the vehicle. Believe it may be related to the rear differential. The Jeep dealer at the 30,000 mile service put the wrong fluid in and it was driven before I caught it. All the seals under the vehicle leaked again at 59,000 and another Jeep dealer supposedly replaced the fluids with the right type.
Total of 4 total brake(rotor/pad) repairs needed alomg with: rear diff, oil seals, calipers, steering stabilizers, brake lines. All mileage is highway with little brakage.
The front differential was faulty causing front end noise while driving. Nlm.
Vehicle experienced major pulsation when braking, the brake and disc rotors were warped, dealer replaced those and a a pad kit, shoe kit parking brake, shoe kit rear disc brake, seal axle drive shaft, and brake shoe and lining assembly, about 6000 mile later, problem returned, brake pads and rotors were replaced along with the shoe kit front disc brake. Gear kit center differential, gear kit ring and pinion, bearing -drive pinion, shimdrive pinion, seal drive pinion, and shim differential pinion were replaced. About 12000 miles later, vehicle is experiencing brake pulsation again, dealership is stating the vehicle has rotor runnout front and rear, this will be the fourth set of brakes on this vehicle, consumer states this is a safety hazard that continues to occur.
Front differentials and the rear differentials and propellar shaft had to be replaced, now experiencing lots of stalling and engine would die whenever coming to a stop, sometime it seems to lunge forward and just die, installed new transmission.
We have had the rotors "shaved" at 12,000 miles, supposedly replaced at 22,000 miles and started having problems again at 31000 miles car vibrates violently, driver seat belt keeps jamming, the differential had to be replaced and the fuel pump had to be replaced.
Consumer heard a grinding noise while driving vehicle. Dealer determined rear differential had to be replaced. When leaving dealership after repair was done, consumer heard the same grinding noise. On 30 Jan, 2001 front differential was replaced.
What a lemon! we are averaging $2000/year in repairs. Power windows that stop working, water pump breaks, brake rotors need replacing before brakes wear out, leaking differential, transmission, and now we're told by dealer service department we need a new transfer case. Whoever designed/built/sold this vehicle doesn't have much pride in their workmanship.
Rear differential rebuilt twice, thus far. Dealer indicated common problem on this vehicle. Am in process of tradining vehicle in, as I don't want to experience this problem again. Having to pay $5,000 for negative equity, but worth every penny. Manufacturer should seriously consider recall of vehicle.
The seal-axle drive shaft, gear kit center differential, gear kit ring and pinion, bearing-drive pinion, shim-drive pinion bearing, seal-drive pinion, and shim-differential bearing were all replaced.
On upshift and downshift the vehicle makes a whinning/grinding noise, the dealer replaced the transmission, torque converter also replaced. Nlm.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Differential side pinion bearings replaced.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
I belive the design/parts/assembly of this entire drivetrain are deffective, resulting in abnormal wear and inevitable premature failure. This, and any other, 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee exhibit a driveline noise or whine at almost any speed. I do not know exactly what it is, but somethings wrong. The internet is loaded with newsgroup posts from owners that experienced this fault. After many trips to the shop, while still under warranty, the servicing dealer finally explained the noise/whine was prevalent in every car of this model year. I was told Chrysler actually had a rating scale in place for the dealers to justify which vehicles they would attempt to repair. My letter to Chryslers customer assistance center resulted only in a return phone call with a live with it attitude, which demonstrated their indifference or actually acceptance of this defect. With now over 100k miles, this design flaw has cost well into the thousands of dollars for repairs, not to mention the obvious value loss at the time of trade or resale.
At 45+ mph a groan noise that is there when pushing accelorator - dealer replace differntial gear twice still have noise; noise at 72 dealer replaced rear drive shaft, ball joint, and other drive line compents - this reduced noise but it is still there; after doing all this now have noise in rear at 20mph (grinding in differential?) also a noise in front that is hard to describe.
Differential has gone out 3 times, last time past the warranty, need help with this expense lemon.
While driving at any speed the consumer could here a loud rubbing noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. The dealer examined the vehicle and found that the rear differential was defective. Since September of 1999 the differential has been replaced four times.
