Differential Unit problems of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee - part 2

57 problems related to differential unit have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 09/01/1999

Due to a defective rear differential in the transmission which been replaced once, while driving vehicle lunged forward, which may have caused a crash. Also, in reverse position there is a loud noise. Problem still exists.

37 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/27/1999

In shop 5 times since purchase and problems still not fixed.

38 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/09/1999

Repeated problems with ac/heat being erratic, will take vehicle in for 4th time. Vehicle shuddered, fixed by changing fluid. Weather seal fell off. Brake shudder fixed by replacement of rotors, etc. Engine stalled fixed, but the rev up and lurch at stop is not yet. Setting another appointment with service.

39 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/01/1999

Several dealerships have not been able to resolve problem. Front tires are grinding away the interior wall of the wheel wells. Tire is now grinding on steel chasis and beginning to erode itself. Chrysler has no solution after 6-8 visits for repair in 4 months. Mechanics recommend the car not be driven until a solution can be found due to safety reasons. . . In the meantime I have purchased a new vehicle I can not drive and neither the dealership nor Chrysler will replace the defective vehicle. ( dot number: tire size: 245/70/r16 ).

40 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/01/1999

Since buying the veh, loud differential whine at 45+ mph; front rotors needed to be replaced (warped) at 7500 miles; rear flipper glass leaks; loud grinding noise when pulling away from curb (transfer case fluid replaced after lurching when making tight.

41 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/15/1999

While making a sharp turn vehicle would shake / vibrate, causing loss of control. Also, driveshaft yoke assembly failed. Seeking help from NHTSA in this matters, the power train differential unit makes whine noise between 54-65 mph.

42 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/01/1999

The automatic transmission failed and had to be replaced after about 6000 miles. There is a lot of noise from the rear, sounds like it is coming from the differential or axle. It is loud enough to be heard over the radio. The front rotors appear to be warped. When braking at highway speeds, the steering wheel shudders. It does not feel safe.

43 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/01/1999

Rear-back window leaked, reseal failed, had to remove window and reseal, took 4 days. Front differential failed causing front tires to hop during tight turns, diff replaced took 3 days. When stopped at a stop light truck lurches forward almost as if hit from behind, this happens 1 sometimes 2 times at one stoplight, engine revs also increase when this happens, dealer cannot fix. Gas tank is very hard to fill the pump stops before it is full and many times gas spills all over truck and pavement causing a fire hazzard, also gas cap is very hard to remove.

44 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/01/1999

A humming noise is coming from wheel. Rear differential is causing heat to build up, and vibration noise.

45 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 12/20/1998

Excessive gear whine/noise from differentials. Front rebuilt twice, rear rebuilt once. Dealer ordered new front transaxial unit assembly.

46 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 12/01/1998

Front brake rotors keep having warping problem; were replaced at about 5000 mi. , turned at about 18500 mi. , and are again, at 22725 mi. Out of round again. Terrible noise coming from rear; differential rebuilt with new bushings and noise is beginning to.

47 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 11/01/1998

Vehicle bucks and jumps during low speed turns in forward and reverse. May be related to transfer case: dealer indicated wrong fluids installed at factory. We are concerned about future general failure or possible lockup and crash at highway speeds.

48 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 10/31/1998

The differential makes humming noise at speeds between 45 to 55 mph. Yh.

49 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/01/1901

Noise in the drive train was the result of a failed differential bearing. The consumer was told that contamination was likely the cause of the failure.

50 Differential Unit problem

None of these things have been fixed to date. Dealer was given 2 chances and kept saying they could not see anything. Took to another dealer & they said drive shaft, brakes, pinion & gear, back glass all needed replaced. Would not work on vehicle because of dealer fraud. Bought oct. 1999 new. Had been in service since sept. 1998. Did not want to get involved. No safety defect listed in the summary.

51 Differential Unit problem

No summary listed for this vehicle.

52 Differential Unit problem

I have taken my Jeep cherokee numerous times to have an engine knock. . . A whining noise and a banging noise checked out. Everyone except the service people can hear these noises. I was told by a mechanic that used to work for Chrysler that they know there is a problem with the engine and the transmission and that they are not acknowledging it. I watched the today show on August 4th and heard about the problems that exist with the transmission on the Jeep cherokee and became concerned. I have repeatedly voiced these concerns to the service department and also spoke to a Chrysler rep directly in a 3 way conversation. I was told that they would have my complaint on file. The whining and banging noise has now turned into a grinding noise that I am afraid is effecting the power train to the point that it will fail. The service dept. Has replaced (unnecessarily) the shocks, the battery, and the drive shaft, saying that this will remedy the problem. It has not>.

53 Differential Unit problem

While driving the rear end of the vehicle feels like its dragging on the ground. Took to mechanic, and mechanic replaced the differentral. Please describe further.

54 Differential Unit problem

Brakes: front end shakes when braking, rotors turned by dealer, but problem continues - dangerous. Differential/transfercase: loud clunking noise from rear, 'roaring' noise at speeds of 30-40mph and 65-75mph. Engine: stalls(dies out) when idling in gear and when putting gear from park to reverse, delear doesn't know how to fix. Vehicle lunges forward when coming to a stop, almost hit vehicle in front - dangerous. Idles roughly, rpms go up and down at stops, stalls. Steering: pulls to right, dealer says alignment is fine. Noise from steering column when turning. Lots of water condensed inside of vehicle at passengers feet when ac on, dealer says normal.

55 Differential Unit problem

While bringing vehicle to dealer to be serviced technician refused to repair vehicle due to rear differential unit being overhalled. Please provide further information.

56 Differential Unit problem

This vehicle has a loud whine in the drive train at highway speeds (55-70mph). It has quadra trac ii powertrain. The vehicle has been in service 4 times for a total of 19 days over the last 2 months to correct the problem. Chrysler seems unable to fix. The internet is littered with complaints about this problem, which seems to be limited to quadra trac ii drivetrains. This is a wide-spread problem. Pressure should be brought to Jeep Chrysler to fix. Also, I firmly believe that the dealer knew about this problem, but did not reveal to us.

57 Differential Unit problem

Been hearing grind noise in rear of car . Mechanic says needs differential rebuilt .
