Eight problems related to axle shaft have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Failure of the rear axle seal/bearings - grease leaking onto the rear brakes (safety hazard) this is the 4th failure on this vehicle - 1) repaired under warranty 2) repaired at cost of $250. 71 @ 65,891 miles 3) repaired under 3 way split $200. 00 my part @ 78,203 miles 4)failed at 103,473 miles estimated cost of repair $202. 58 (not by dealer) told by mechanic at dealer that the falt is in the casting of housing and Jeep knows this and will continue to fail. Called Jeep ( daimlerchrysler) customer assistance and was held on phone for 20 min then was told Jeep could do nothing about this other than recommend a different dealer.
Rear axle pinion gear and bearing failure due to retaining nut backing off. If left unfounded failure of drive train and rear axle lock up would occur. Initial thought by mechanic universal joint was bad. Further investigation found retaining nut backed out, ring and pinion gear and axle bearings chewed up as result of nut backing off.
Bearings where bad in the differential, mechanic said too much tension on the spring wearing bearings out. Dealer commented on having many occurrences of this same problem.
While traveling over 60mph vehicle shimmies and shakes. Rotors have been turned and replaced several times. The consumer considers the vehicle to be a lemon. The vehicle had been eight times to dealership and was out of service for repairs for 13 calendar days. The problems were window motor failure. Bad brake rotors occured five times. Noise in the rear of the vehicle due to bearings failure. The vehicle vibrates when brakes are applied.
Front and rear axle bearings failed causing grinding noise.
1. Front brake rotors had to be replaced 3 times due to warping; 2. Driver's side window failed to open properly, and neededed to be replaced twice, and 3. Rear drive axle bearing failed. Please provide further information.
Transaxle bearings, and now abs issues including rotor problems.
Transmission would be dragging. Would be in right gear, but not pulling. This is a leased vehicle. Rear wheel bearings are failing on vehicle. Have taken vehicle to dealership 3 times for bearings.
