1 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/13/2025

The gear selector assembly (shifter indicator) failed in accordance with current recall s28 for 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees. The lights stopped illuminating suggesting corruption/inability to flash repair and the "service shifter" warning message appeared on the dash. The dealer indicated the vehicle is immediately unsafe for operation stating that the prndm indicator operates important features beyond just illumination of the prndm display such as driving signals, lights including reverse lights, backup camera, etc and that the vehicle is not currently recognizing all gears. Jeep dealer indicated this is a common failure and indicative of s28 recall but could not provide reasoning why vehicle was not included in the notice.

2 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/07/2019

While driving on a highway at 60 mph my vehicle started flashing every possible warning light. Airbags, abs, slip control, cruise control . . . Everything. Most concerning was the 'service shifter' alert; the prnd lights on my shifter panel all started flashing and the car (auto transmission) was stuck in one gear and would not shift. Pulling over and restarting the vehicle would 'fix it' for 10-15 minutes until it all happened again. Engine was making an awful loud noise so I pulled over again. This time after turning it off the vehicle would not start at all. After 30 minutes it started and I was able to drive to a town for the night. The next morning I was able to start it and drive it in 1st gear (where it was stuck) to a Jeep dealer. There it sits as I type. I have seen many identical issues reported by Jeep owners on internet forums and most worryingly, Jeep dealers don't seem to have a clear answer. They're commonly replacing the shifter wiring harness but the problem returns for nearly everyone. This incident stranded me in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, and left me very worried about my safety. Whatever is wrong with the vehicle has cascading errors that affect headlight operation (my high beams would now work), slip control (it became non functional even if I overrode it), wipers (in my case they came on without any rain and I could not turn them off. . . They could just as easily have not functioned in a downpour creating a safety hazard), and braking (the brake pedal was rock solid and not working properly).

3 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/03/2016

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo with 3. 7 liter motor shows all four gears park neutral reverse and drive "prnd" active at the same time and the check engine obdii code u0103 (can bus communication lost with the shifter). This condition reoccurs every 1 to 7 days approximately. While in this mode the vehicle is in limp mode stuck in 2nd gear. I tried to drive it to the dealership twice with this condition on back roads but it will clear after driving for about 5 miles in limp mode. I had the vehicle towed to the Jeep dealership with this condition present. It cleared while they were trying to diagnose problem and they couldn't get it to repeat while driving it with my permission for three weeks. They were unable to diagnose the problem and no repairs were made. I got my vehicle back after three weeks at dealeship and problem reoccurred after two days of driving. Trying to drive this vehicle in limp mode is very dangerous as you cannot exceed about 30 miles per hour causing dangerous conditions to myself and other drivers on roads with speed limits higher than 30 mph. This is a serious safety issue and the dealership can't diagnose the problem. In the meantime I am stuck with a very unsafe vehicle.

4 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/13/2014

While accelerating the vehicle lost power and the prndl lights all illuminated. After a few seconds power resumed. This has happened several times and the check engine light has come on. We have been told its error code u0404 and the electronic shift module needs to be replaced. It appears this is a very common occurrence for this year vehicle. It is a safety concern because if it happened during high traffic times it could certainly cause an accident.

5 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

Upon driving my daughter to school my transmission would not leave 1st gear. Rpm's would almost red line, I would let off the gas to let it shift and nothing, it stayed in 1st gear. Well when I looked at the gauges, my lights for prndl were all lit up instead of just "d". Boxes around every single letter. I proceeded to put the car in neutral and put it back in drive and still all 5 letters lit up and engine bogged down. It took several minutes for what like seemed forever for it to get into gear which was drive, I backed up traffic because I couldn't do the speed limit and had to use my hazard lights on the side of the road. This was my first occurrence, this has happened at least a dozen or more times since then to include yesterday Jan 5 2015. Every time I contact the dealer or ask on Jeep owner website, I get " sorry sir the only recall listed is the ignition switch and we don't have a part for that. " I checked the website and apparently my Jeep had been serviced for the transmission back in 2010 at 70k miles but does not explain what they did. I also need to put in another complaint about the transmission. June of 2014 and still to this day the gear shift can be moved from "p" to any gear, and that is when no keys are in the ignition. I was working under the hood and my 4 year old son did just that and almost ran me over. I checked and the vehicle had no keys in it they were with me in my tool box because I didn't want him to do just that.

6 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/16/2012

My 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee (first incident) while turning a corner at approximately 15-20mph revved up, would not shift, and prnd were all lit up on the dash, as well as the engine light came on. After a few starts the engine light has gone off. Second incident, from dead stop at a light and accelerating, same issue. Engine light goes off again. This has now occurred 4 times within 2 months and is a safety hazard considering the fact that your speed drops down out of no where and can potentially cause a serious accidents, causing harm to car a drivers, especially behind you, them not being aware that you are suddenly about to drop speed without brake lights!.

7 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/09/2011

The trans struggles to shift through every gear and wont shift past 3rd gear, sometimes even stalling me in traffic. Feels like it doesn't catch the next gear when accelerating. There have been times when I've been stopped at a light at an intersection and when I go to accelerate, the engine will just rev as if it's in neutral, but it's not. Therefore, the acceleration is very weak. When switching from park to drive, it either doesn't fully click into drive or it selects all gears (prnd) in which I then have to park the car and shut it off, then retry a minute later. I don't drive the vehicle as a manual so there should be no reason for it to stall, but I'm pretty sure the issue stems from the main computer in the shifter module. At times, it seems like the vehicle is expecting me to shift it from gear to gear, then it finally clicks and moves to the next gear on its own.

8 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/28/2011

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2007, 25,000 miles. Suddenly decelerates and all of the boxes around the gears prnd light up at the same time. I need to puul over, turn the Jeep off, then restart to regain normal running. This could be a tragic problem if the Jeep were to suddenly decelerate on a highway with a full load of children.

9 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, pulling onto highway vehicle experienced loss of power. Prnd on display were all selected and check engine light came on. Was able to pull to side of road , put vehicle into park, cycle vehicle off then back on and power was restored. Since the intiial occurance the event has happened twice more. Scheduled appointment with repair department.

10 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/07/2011

I was driving at 70mph on the highway when suddenly the car "jerked" and the speed drastically decreased to 20mph. I was unable to accelerate. The check engine light came on and there was a box around prnd instead of just around drive. I got off the highway as soon as I could and drove to my local mechanic. The same thing happened to me in oct 2009 shortly after I purchased the vehicle, I brought it back to the dealer and it was fixed at that time. Now alittle over one year later the same thing happened. I am lucky that I was traveling when traffic was light or it most certainly would have caused an accident. I spoke with Jeep and they were not willing to offer any assistance unless I brought the car back to the dealer in which is was repaired before, I explained that the dealership is one hour away and I would not be driving my vehicle that distance and do not currently have the financial capability to have it towed that distance. They need to issue a recall on this situation.

11 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/21/2010

Vehicle has stopped accelerating on multiple occasions. All of the prnd lights switched to having a square around them, normally, only the transmission position that you are in will have the square around them. While going 20mph the car stopped accelerating once until I came to a complete stop. Had to put on hazards and had to turn off car and restart it in order to move again - was at least 45 seconds with no acceleration at all. Problem has occurred five times so far. Four times I was going between 15-20, and once going 50. Check engine light has came on when this occurs too. Four of the times it has happened I just made a turn and started accelerating, and once I was traveling a straight path.

12 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/14/2010

The car all of a sudden loses power and all the prnd12 light up. Some days it won't go into drive, then all of a sudden drops into drive. When driving on the highway if you slow down, you can't speed up again, like you have no acceleration. Once in a while the check engine light comes on, then it will go off again, most of the time you have no notice that anything is going to happen, you just lose the ability to accelerate. I see a lot of other people filing complaints on the same issue and have looked online and found many more that are having this issue.

13 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

My 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee started acting up about a year after I purchased it and has progressively gotten worse and worse. It has problems shifting and identifying what gear it is in on a daily basis, for example when I put it in drive from park prnd will all be illuminated like it doesn't know what gear it is in and it will make a loud thud sound. Then when you drive it won't shift from first gear and will rev up or it will get stuck in 3rd gear and won't down shift. Sometimes it will be driving normal and when I stop at a stop sign and then go to pull out into traffic it will stall right in the middle of traffic and I can't get it to snap out of it! it will also decide that it doesn't know what gear it is in while I am driving on the expressway and will start to rev up and freeze on me. This is very unsettling and dangerous and could defiantly cause a serious accident. From what I have read in other reviews many people have this same problem with their 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee so it doesn't seem like just a coincidence to me and something should be done. I have taken it to different mechanics and no one can give me an answer as to whats wrong or how to fix it.

14 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

The gear shift module is badly designed it uses a brush that drags along contacts to tell tranny what gear is selected. Over time though some of the conductive material starts to rub off and make connections between 2 or more of the contacts, when this happens the ecu and tranny can't tell what gear it's in and goes into limp mode 20 mph max a very dangerous situation I'm lucky I didn't get rearended by a very pissed off semi ruck driver recently. I'm sure some one has been injured and possibly killed by this badly designed and dangerous module. . Chrysler and benz were partners in 2007 and benz uses a touchless ( magnetic) system much safer. Jeep just keeps on putting in same part no improvements have been made the tcb tells dealer to put in a new part. The only warning sign you might get is all of the circles around the prnd on your dash will be lit showing you the module has no idea what gear it's in but no warning lights or buzzers. This has happened many times since 2010 always with the vehicle moving and all of a sudden very dangerous!!.

15 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

Bought used 2007 Grand Cherokee from adams Jeep, aberdeen MD in Nov. 2009. Within first month, while traveling around 30 mph, car would not accelerate when pushing on gas pedal despite engine racing. Prnd lights all lit up. Took car back to dealer and bezel gear selector replaced after paying $100 deductible on extended warranty. Same problem occurred 5 months later. Dealer charged me for electronic control module updates. One month later, same problem occurred, dealer replaced bezel gear selector again. One month later, same exact problem occurred. This is 4th time taking car in for lack of acceleration while pushing on gas pedal. Dealer states unable to fix problem since they cannot reproduce it. This is a huge safety problem as I have almost been hit multiple times when my car fails to accelerate when pushing on gas pedal. Chrysler needs to recall the shifter module in these cars before someone gets killed.

16 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Sometimes when I drive the engine feels like it stalls out and my rpm's don't move, all the boxes around prnd light up and the check engine light comes on. I have to pull over and put the car in park or sometimes I have to turn it off. Once this is done the car continues to drive like nothing happened but the check engine light will stay on for a day. Sometimes it happens on the highway which is very scary to just drop speed down to 40. I have read many blogs about this issue. It happens at random times.

17 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/29/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While the vehicle was parked and turned off, a child crossed over the driver's seat to exit the vehicle. He held the gear shift to support himself, which caused the vehicle to shift into drive. The vehicle sped down a hill and crashed into a tree. There were no injuries and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an auto body shop and the mechanic stated that the cable went into the shifting gear, which caused the vehicle to shift into gear without the key in the ignition. The body of the vehicle was repaired, but not the gear shift. The vehicle is still at the auto body shop. The contact would like someone from chrsyler to inspect the vehicle. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 43,000.

18 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/12/2008

I have been to the dealer 3 times for this issue. First it was my prnd lights would all light up at the same time and my acceleration would not work. Then my check engine light would come on and go off again after a few starts. Now the check engine light is on and the code is u0404 which I am told is the shifter/electronic control module. While searching this I have found hundreds of owners with the same problem, all right after their warranty ran out. I went to the dealer while still under warranty and it was not found now that I am 900 mil;ES past warranty they know what it is. I feel if this many owners have the same problem it should be recalled. I completely lost acceleration while on the highway twice and was almost rear ended.

20 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/05/2007

I started the vehicle and started driving when the vehicle would not go faster than 20mph and felt like stalling out. On the dashboard it show that the vehicle was in p,r,n,and d all at the same time (circles around the letters). I call a Jeep dealership and they told me if the engine light didn't come on there's on code, so they can't fix it. Jeep also told me they never heard of this problem.

22 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/15/2007

2007/ 30 000 miles. Shifter malfunctions intermittently and causes loss of acceleration by going neutral or sticking in 1st gear unexpectedly. Typically, all the letters are lift prnd simultaneously and check engine light comes on. Stopping and restarting (annoying and dangerous in highway driving) seems to reset the shifter. Dealer says esm part no 52124138ad is responsible for the problem. I believe for safety reasons, there should be a recall on this part before somebody gets killed as a sitting duck in the middle of the highway.

24 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/28/2007

On 2 separate occasions, my Jeep lurched forward while parking. The 1st time I had to put 2 feet on the brake pedal to stop it, & the Jeep was still trying to drag itself forward. It happened again 2 months later. On March 28, 2007, I had a major incident that has left me terrified of ever driving this vehicle again. I pulled over to transfer some things to another vehicle. I put my Jeep in park & left it running. I got out of the Jeep (my driver's door was open) & as I got to the rear of the vehicle, it started to slowly roll backwards. I ran back & tried reach the brake, but my foot slipped off & I hit the gas pedal. The Jeep let out a roar - it was revving uncontrolably (normal in a vehicle that is in park) - then I felt a bang & the Jeep took off, in reverse, like a shot. My right foot got caught under the brake pedal as I scrambled frantically to get into the vehicle. My shoe came off, I was thrown to the ground by my open driver's door & run over by my own Jeep. The truck continued in reverse & slammed intoanother vehicle. I was taken by ambulance to hospital for x-rays, a CT scan, and a tetanus shot. I have a broken tailbone, staples closing a gash in my head, abrasions on my feet and hands, wrenched back & neck & severe dizzyness. I know I put the car in park. I heard the door locks release. When I hit the gas, the engine revved for several seconds before banging into reverse & taking off. If the car had actually been in reverse, it would have rolled as soon as I got out. Also, it would've just taken off in reverse when I hit the gas, not revved like a jet engine. The vehicle was in park when it was turned off after the accident. I've contacted daimler Chrysler. They said "thanks for the info, we'll be in touch. " I'm not holding my breath. I don't want to ever drive this Jeep again. I don't want anyone to ever drive this Jeep again. I'd like daimler chrisler to address these issues before others are hurt, & I would appreciate your help.

25 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/12/2007

While driving, the prndl had lit boxes around all the letters, and dash indicators all lit up, and Jeep lost power as if stalling. It then "went" back into drive on its own. This happened over eleven times, with mileage starting at 1,186, and most recently at 52,536. Dates of repair incidents are : 2/12/07, 12/31/07, 1/10/08, 9/22/08, 1/5/09, 6/9/09, 6/18/12, 10/19/12, 12/26/12, 3/8/13, 3/22/13. My Jeep is a 2007, averaging 8,756 miles per year. I bought it new and I take very good care of all maintenance right away - oil changes, filters, tire rotation, etc. ! each time it was brought to the dealer for "repair" , they either couldn't find the problem, or replaced : shifter module (twice), transmission wiring harness (three times) and suggested a new battery (we replaced that also), and transmission plug and seal. There were also numerous "software and anti-theft updates. In addition to these, I replaced the driver's side window regulator twice. Now, they want to replace the "transmission temp circ. " and esm module - for another $1,500. 00 . All this in 52,536 miles and 6 years !!! I firmly believe there are serious manufacturer defects with this vehicle. My biggest concern is the safety of this Jeep is unpredictable. I never know, even after all the "repairs and replacements" , if it will suddenly lose power and I might be in danger (traffic, intersection, etc. ). How in the world could Chrysler deny this problem? it needs to be resolved at the source, they are responsible for the safety of their vehicles !!!! there are many reports of this same issue from numerous 2007 Jeep owners - where is the recall ???!!!!.

29 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/26/2003

On June 26, 2003, my wife called me stating she could not get our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee to lock into park. The shifter would go into park, as well as the transmission, but the shifter button was in a bind (actually the rubber piece on the shifter button had come off and lodged in between the shifter stalk and the button). This in effect held the button in, not locking the shifter into park. I feel the only reason she knew something was wrong was the fact that she could not remove the keys from the ignition. I simply told her to put the transmission in neutral and engage the parking brake, but had she exited the car with the engine running, the shifter would have very easily moved into any drive gear which could result in 1) vehicle damage, and 2) grave bodily injury. We love the Jeep, but feel this issue is highly unsafe.
