36 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/13/2006

: the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the service brakes pulsate causing the steering wheel to vibrate. The dealership turned the rotors at 7,000 miles. On December 3, 2004 at 17,000 miles the rotors and calipers were replaced because the vibration returned. At 28,000 miles the problem returned, but there have been no additional repairs.

38 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/12/2006

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4wd. I had begun to notice a shudder when braking and took the vehicle to my local repair shop (midas). They advised me that I would need new rotors, pads, and calipers on at least the front brakes. They also told me that this is a recurring problem with Jeeps and that a technical service bulletin had been given to them referring them to this problem. What I don't understand is; if this is a problem that Jeep knows about and the braking system that is safety related, then how can it not be a recall. The mechanic told me the calipers have a problem of 'sticking', causing uneven rotor wear and shoe failure. I bought the vehicle used less than a year ago, and now have no real recourse to get the problem fixed.

39 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/16/2005

I am reporting the second instance of front brake rotor warping on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee which has ~27,000 miles. The first occurrence was at about 15,000 miles. On braking at speeds of >35 mph (even normal braking - not emergency braking), there is an excessive front end shimmy and chatter that seems dangerous. It seemed very unusual that the front rotors had warped at 15,000 miles, but the dealer said that brakes were not covered under the Jeep warranty so we paid for turning them. Now the front rotors are warped again and will require service. The dealer again says that this is not covered under the warranty so I will have to pay for turning them again or replacing them. We do not pull anything with the vehicle and rarely use the brakes for anything but routine stopping, so the rotors should not warp so frequently. Clearly there are design problems with this that could create an unsafe situation when braking if I were not to have the rotors fixed so frequently. For example, if the steering wheel were not gripped tightly during braking the vehicle could easily go out of control.

40 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/25/2005

Vehicle shakes when brakes are applied for high speed braking. Jeep is quoting $700 to repair. The recommended fix is to install a differently manufactured caliper and rotor, the original design is defective. Reference TSB 00500302b. It is a dangerous and expensive safety related fix due to defective initial design.

41 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/03/2005

After only 9,000 miles the rotors were so warped the car shook violently when brakes were applied. I replaced the rotors. 10,000 miles later the same thing happened again. No one would "officially" admit that the rotors and or the calipers are too small for the v8 version of the Jeep. I have replaced the rotors with aftermarket slotted and vented rotors 3 more times at a significant expense to me. The dangerous part of this is it warps quickly and causes the car to be hard to control while breaking: not a good situation. In my opinion they should have to put a larger braking system together "larger rotors and calipers to dissipate the heat properly in the v8 version of the 2004 and probably other Grand Cherokee.

42 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/04/2005

We purchased the vehicle new. After replacing brakes 4 times, we still have pulsing when we brake and the steering wheel shakes horribly. There are only 36,000miles on the vehicle and we have also had to replace the tires due to cupping. No one knows what is causing the problem, they just keep replacing the brakes only to have them continue to pulse. I can't believe any of the mechanics that have looked at the vehicle would enjoy driving a vehicle like this, still we are stuck with it. I read on one site that it could be the calipers; maybe Chrysler should look into it. We hold our breath that we will stop when we put on the brakes. Why isn't Chrysler made accountable for faulty brakes/calipers when it could cause an accident?.

43 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/15/2005

I purchased a new Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo in may of 2001. In July 2005, I noticed a pulsation in the brake pedal when decelerating from highway speeds greater than forty mph. The dealer said the rotors were warped, and recommended replacing the front brake rotors and brake pads. The cost would be over $300. 00. The car has 13,00 miles. But it is over 3 years old, so repairs are not covered under any warranty. This problem is very common, and appears to be linked to the calipers as well as the rotors. Replacing the calipers with design, as well as the rotors and pads reportedly eliminated recurrent problems. Is a recall justified to correct this problem?.

44 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/08/2005

Dt: contact states while driving his vehicle about 65 mph, the entire vehicle started shaking because front calipers locked down on the rotors. The front tire becomes so hot that smoke starts coming from the tire. This was the first time the vehicle has had this problem. The vehicle is at the service dealer and there is a new brake kit available for the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated letting the consumer know there was a problem with the brakes.

45 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/20/2005

I am having abs brake problems with this truck. I owned a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee for 3 years and had the same problem but it was under warranty. The calipers and rotors had to be replaced 4 times and the truck had less then 30,000 miles. My brake pads were always fine. I traded the truck in early for a 2004 model. The sales man assured me the problem was fixed. After a year, I had the same problem, the rotors and calipers had to be replaced again, and the pads were fine. The mechanic told me the abs is the problem, as when you step on the brakes, it activates and heats up the rotors and damages the calipers because the abs brakes do not release in time to cool off the braking system. Chrysler replaced everything because it was under 13,000 miles, but will not if it happens again. Why should we have to pay for a system failure? I think Chrysler should recall all models with this braking failure and fix it. They are very aware of the problem.

46 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/11/2005

Brakes on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee are a problem.

47 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/03/2005

Contact states the brakes pulsate which causes the vehicle to shake. The brakes have been replaced once, but repaired 3 times. The problem continues.

48 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/10/2005

While driving at different speeds and making slight turns the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee will vibrate and bounce. The steering wheel will begin to pull and the front right tire feels like it is coming off or bouncing. I have taken it to the dealer and three independent shops for this problem over a 2 year period. All of have felt the problem and have no idea where it is coming from. I have so far replaced the entire front brake system, all front bushings, shocks, tires, front u bolts, and had the whole system inspected by at least 10 different mechanics. Also the brakes feel like they are riding on a warped rotor. When breaking the pedal pushes back at the driver and makes it very difficult to control the breaking. This problem has also been looked at by the dealer and the aforementioned shops. To date no solution has been found and the problem keeps getting worse. I fear that either of these problems can cause a major failure leading to injury or death.

49 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/10/2005

Vibration of the steering wheel, floor, seat, instrument panel & fminor pedal pulsation (brake roughess) under light to moderate pedal application. This condition may be casued by thickness variation of the brake rotor system. To correct this problem brakes & calipers must be replaced. I feel that anything having to do with the brakes on a vehicle should be the responsibility of the vehicle manufacture to correct. I consider brakes a life/death situation. There is a technical service bulletin from Jeep # 05-0036-02 rev. B, date 12/16/2002.

50 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/10/2005

I own two Jeep Grand Cherokees 2003 models, both purchased in Dec 2002. Both of these vehicles have had brake problems, consisting of warpped brake rotors. I have owned 9 Jeep Grand Cherokees since 1992. 6 of the nine Jeeps have had brake problems. 4 of those Jeeps have had their brakes repaired or replaced at no charge to me. However the 2003 Jeeps I currently own have the same problem. I have had them both repaired in 2004 and I am having the same problem in 2005. One of the Jeeps has 13,000 miles since the 2004 repair and the second one has 7570 miles on it since the 2004 repair. My understanding of the problem is that the calipers used to apply pressure to the brake pads never fully release, therefore there is always some pressure being applied to the rotor and the rotor is warpped from the heat caused by the pad being constantly in contact with the rotor.

51 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

52 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/15/2004

While braking from 30 -40 mph, the brake pedal went to the floor and continued to the floor. The consumer shifted the vehicle into neutral and applied the emergency brake and was able to pull the vehicle out of traffic. Consumer states, "after depressing the brake pedal a few times the brake pressure returned. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer informed the consumer that the whole braking system needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced all rotors, pads, and calipers.

53 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/20/2004

I purchased this Jeep used with around 25k miles on it. After bout 1 year of driving my rotors started to vibrate when brake applied. After a couple days of this my drivers side brake caliper locked up while my family and I were out for a ride. I pulled over to see my rotor glowing red, I left the vehicle parked there over night replaced rotor, pads, and a new caliper. Within 2 months same thing occurred with the passenger side, so I fixed that side. Since the original problem I've replaced both rotors 3 times and pads 4 times in less than 8 months. Dealer says there is nothing wrong with brake system, I disagree. After researching this on the internet I see that a lot of owners have the exact same problem. I can not see how a manufacturer can get away with these kind of problems. I know that if the company I work for had built and sold faulty products we would be sued and out of business. Why is this company allowed to get away with these obvious malfunctions of one of the key components in safety on a car, the brakes. Thanks for any and all help.

54 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/10/2004

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 6cyl. At approx 27,000 I experienced a vibration/pulsation when the brakes were applied. I took it into the dealer for diagnosis and was informed that the front pads were worn out and the rotors were out of round and needed turning. I had that work performed with dismay that every 27,000 miles that would need to be done. It is now 48,000 miles (21,000 later) and the same problem has occurred. According to Jeep a revised brake caliper design has been built to correct the problem. As of this last changing (using the new rotors and calipers per TSB 05-003-02b) I will have spent $700 in less than 2 years on brakes that should not have worn out once inl 50,000. I was informed that this replacement was not covered under warranty, but being that it is premature failure of a poor design, I believe that it should be.

55 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/09/2004

I bought my 2001 Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4 on Aug. 20, 2001, in November 2002, with 8,000 miles on the vehicle I felt the steering wheel shake when braking at high speeds. The front rotors, calipers, and pads were shot. Rockland auto plaza replaced them at no charge under the warranty. This past week, with 17,000 miles on the car, the front rotors were warped again. White plains Chrysler replaced them at no charge but advised me that this type of wear was normal for an SUV. Obviously, from the complaints here, this is not normal but a problem that diamler Chrysler needs to address. 3 pairs of rotors on a car with 17,000 miles, driven mostly on the highway, is un-excusable.

56 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/02/2004

Had front brakes serviced may 2003 new rotors, pads. August 2004 had to have new calipers, pads and rotors resurfised. Because calipers failed and almost started tire on fire. Told there is a service bulliten ref putting on different calipers.

57 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/21/2004

The rotors have been replaced three time since the consumer owned the vehicle.

58 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/15/2004

Brake rotors and pads replaced every 10,000 miles. The last time vehicle was repaired, the rotors, pads and calipers were replaced. Consumer stated brakes were replaced three times. Dealer claimed it was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Please provide further information.

59 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/14/2004

Dealer replaced at 11,000 miles the front rotors and pads. At 16,000 miles, the front rotors and pads were replaced. At 35,000 miles the rotors were resurfaced and the pads were replaced. At 45, 000 miles the dealership indicated they needed to replace the calipers, and install a bigger caliper. The warping front rotors caused pulsating brake pedal and an uncontrollable steering wheel.

60 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/14/2004

April of 2002 noted pulsation in the steering wheel, dealer resurfaced front brake rotors. August of 2003 noted pulsation in steering wheel, dealer replaced front brake rotors, calipers and pads and resurfaced rear brake rotors. Ak July of 2004 noted the plusation in the steering wheel, dealer replaced the front brake rotors August 2004 the vehicle has only 26,000 miles on the odometer and the amount of repairs to the braking system seems excessive.

61 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/25/2004

Continued problem with significant front brakes pulsation during light to moderate braking. At times, steering wheel vibrates violently. Learned of how common the problem was from this web site within a year after purchasing vehicle new in 1998. Kept hoping for Jeep to step up and accept responsibility. Nursed original parts to 68k miles waiting for Jeep to come up with better solution than frequent replacment of rotors. Finally, in 2002, new service bulletin called for replacing calipers with new design. New caliper and rotors installed Nov 2002, 20k miles later, problem returned. Spoke to local service managers, no solution. Spoke with Jeep corporate hq, no solution.

62 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/26/2004

Dealer replaced at 10,000 miles the fronts rotors and pads. At 30,000 miles the front rotors/pads, and calipers were replaced. At 46,000 miles the front and rear rotors were resurfaced and the pads were replaced.

63 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/24/2004

I had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 35,000 miles on it. In the course of my ownership (about 3 years) I had the brakes worked on at least 3 times. The first time they replaced the rotors, the second time they replaced the rotors and the calipers. The 3rd time (after the warranty period) they replaced something else and then had the gall to charge me for it. Fixing brakes at a rate of about every 12,000 miles is absolutely outrageous. I can't believe this vehicle has not been recalled to actually correct the problem. It is a serious problem that can cause loss of control of the vehicle.

64 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/28/2004

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4wd 4dr taken in because of brake failure. Was told drums had warped and to permanently fix problem would be $800. 00. To temporarily fix it was, $119. 99, but the problem could come back. My claim is that there are problems with the vehicles' front brakes and that after as little as 5,000 miles, the steering wheel and front wheels "shake" and that drivers encounter severe vibrations through the steering wheel, floor, seat and pedals when the brakes are applied.

65 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/28/2004

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and when braking at speeds ranging from 30mph (city driving) to 50mph(highway driving) the brakes started pulsatiing and the steering wheel started shuddering violently. This has happen to my SUV twrice before around six months after I purchased the vehicle. The first time it happen I wasn't aware of how to obtain this info and I paid for repairment(learning curve). The second time the problem reoccurred I found NHTSA and the proper TSB, armed with that documentation I went back to same dealer they said they fixed the problem at no charge TSB bulleton help alot, well as god be my witness it is happening again as of right now. I went back to the same dealer with documentations (history of same repairs) they want to charge me to get it repaired. I told them I wasn't paying jack I didn't pay on the second time it happen why now, anywhy I told the service advisor that I want it in writting that they are not going to honor the TSB as far as no charge to me the client. I feel why should I be liabiel for their design flaw.

66 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/27/2004

1999 Jeep grand chereokee, front disc brakes keep going out. Rotors goes out of round, about every 15000 miles, due to poor rotor and caliper design. Jeep (and dealers) know this is a problem because there is TSB regarding the issue with the fix being new rotors and calipers of a different design, but they won't do anything to fix it, without costing $500+ to the consumer. Accident waiting to happen.

67 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/30/2003

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee - I purchased the vehicle new in 2002. The steering wheel shakes and is hard to steer when brakes are applied above 50 mph. Brakes pads and rotors were replaced at approx. 7,000 miles, rotors were resurfaced at 15,000 miles and at 18,000 miles the problem is back again.

68 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/07/2003

Service brake would not release. Brake caused violent vehicle vibration and feedback to steering wheel. Steering wheel vibrated so violently it was difficult to hold. Brakes would not release and allow wheels to spin freely. Mileage dropped off to 7 mpg from 16 mpg or so. Service brake fluid reservoir seemed to be filling back up? brake linings were wearing away and smoking. One rotor which was not scored prior to incident is now badly scored. The pads had plenty of a lining left before the incident and car is now unsafe, accept to drive to the shop to replace rotors and upgrade caliper. Park brake and down shifting have limited stopping capability.

69 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/14/2003

The consumer had the vehicle in the shop almost 10 times for repairs. The consumer argued that the power steering was out of order and she was unable to steer the vehicle in reverse. The vehicle had experienced other problems such as the drive pinion, heating pads, brake rotors, calipers, pads, power steering pump, the rear shock absorbers and rear sway bar links. The dealer was contacted about the problems no help was offered. It had appeared that there had been a recall issued for the Grand Cherokees built only from Nov 22- Dec 5 2000 for the power steering and the consumer missed it by a month, but the vehicle experienced the same problem as the recall that was issued. The consumer was very dissatisfied with the dealership. The vehicle also experienced three tire blowouts. The consumer was told the problem was caused by the gear box, there was a recall regarding the issue, however the consumers vehicle was not included in the recall. The front pinion seal leaked.

70 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/08/2003

1999 Jeep cherokee. Warped and continous problems with rotors and calipers. Problem continues shortly after having them fixed repeatedly. The pulsations at high speeds(55mph) are violent. Saw the same/similar complaints by many others. Dealer says Chrysler not responsible. How many times can you afford to fix the same problem? something that has no remedy must be a design fault.
