41 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/17/2005

Vehicle feels like it's riding while the parking brake (?) is engaged, at times only, not always. There just seems to be a sort of resistance noticed. It's been going on for about a year now and, although I've been telling my husband of it during this entire time, he just noticed the other day that, while en-route to a nearby location, upon arrival, the rear passenger-side tire area was smoking a bit. He said it was coming from the brake pads (?), and he got a cup of water and poured it on the area, to which it produced a bit more smoke, of course. Now I'm certain of the resistance and I'm concerned that the brakes will wear down prematurely and won't be working when I desperately need them and have my children in the vehicle with me, which is always.

42 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/16/2005

When applying brakes at speeds of around 30 mph or more the vehicle's front end shims violently. The vehicle shakes as the front wheels are seen oscillations from right to left, which results in a lost of steering. The dealer attributes this to warped rotors. While warped rotors may cause a braking issue they should not cause oscillations in the front wheels. Replacing the rotors and pads might temporarily improve the performance it will not correct the underlying problem or design flaw that causes the oscillations in the steering of the front wheels.

45 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/29/2005

46 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/10/2005

While driving at different speeds and making slight turns the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee will vibrate and bounce. The steering wheel will begin to pull and the front right tire feels like it is coming off or bouncing. I have taken it to the dealer and three independent shops for this problem over a 2 year period. All of have felt the problem and have no idea where it is coming from. I have so far replaced the entire front brake system, all front bushings, shocks, tires, front u bolts, and had the whole system inspected by at least 10 different mechanics. Also the brakes feel like they are riding on a warped rotor. When breaking the pedal pushes back at the driver and makes it very difficult to control the breaking. This problem has also been looked at by the dealer and the aforementioned shops. To date no solution has been found and the problem keeps getting worse. I fear that either of these problems can cause a major failure leading to injury or death.

48 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/28/2005

2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee into service department with approx. 18,000 miles. It went in for scheduled maintenance. I also stated that there was a chirping noise in the passenger door area. After inspection, the service department informed me that the brake pads and brake rotors would have to be replaced. If this is true, it indicates to me that there is a manufacturing problem or a brake problem. Either way, I, as a consumer, do not feel responsible for the dealership wanting me to pay to repair the vehicle. The vehicle remains to sit at the deralership.

51 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/10/2004

Brakes warp and car shakes and shimmies when braking. Dealer has repaired 5 times and repair lasts approximately 2 months. This is an extreme hazard. Chrysler will do nothing. The NHTSA has done nothing in spite of hundreds of complaints on their web site. I am sure there are thousands more that have not been reported on this site. The car is a safety risk. These cars should be recalled and the brakes totally replaced at Chrysler's expense. Why has nothing been done?.

Failure Date: 10/04/2004

Warped brakes on 2004 Grand Cherokee. Eas told by dealer it was due to the fact that I do lots of city driving. After doing some research this is a common problem in Grand Cherokees. 59 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/18/2004

Brake pad and rotor failure after one year and four months of vehicle service. After further research, it has been determined that this is a known problem with the Jeep Grand Cherokee - all years (internet based research) the manufacturer was contacted and they said that these parts (brakes and rotors) are only warranteed for one year or 12k miles. Most other parts are warranteed for 3 years and 36k miles. This problem is known by the manufactuer (Chrysler) and they have had this safety problem for years of production with this model. Both the dealership and the manufactuer refuse to repair the vehicle under warranty. Due to this known safety issue by Chrysler and their greatly reduced warranty coverage on just these items (which indicates their knowledge of the problem) it is determined that a safety issue exists that could have or already has caused injury to others.

60 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/11/2004

Dealer replaced at 14,000 miles the front rotors and pads. At 20,000 miles fronts rotors were resurfaced, and at 26,000 miles rotors were resurfaced once again.

61 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/10/2004

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 6cyl. At approx 27,000 I experienced a vibration/pulsation when the brakes were applied. I took it into the dealer for diagnosis and was informed that the front pads were worn out and the rotors were out of round and needed turning. I had that work performed with dismay that every 27,000 miles that would need to be done. It is now 48,000 miles (21,000 later) and the same problem has occurred. According to Jeep a revised brake caliper design has been built to correct the problem. As of this last changing (using the new rotors and calipers per TSB 05-003-02b) I will have spent $700 in less than 2 years on brakes that should not have worn out once inl 50,000. I was informed that this replacement was not covered under warranty, but being that it is premature failure of a poor design, I believe that it should be.

62 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/04/2004

The steering wheel vibrates horribly and the whole vehicle pulsates forward and back whenever you try to stop. We have replaced the rotors/pads five times since purchasing the Jeep new in 2003. It started at 15,054 (Aug "04), then 24,038 (class action suit), 34,700 (turned), 36,000, and now again at 46,000(sept "09). Well over $1000 into repairs and we still don't feel the vehicle is any safer or make the gc any more pleasant to drive. We don't have much faith in nhsta doing anything about it after reading all the other complaints but thought we would add to the issue. Aren't reliable brakes considered something of a safety issue? there are pages and pages of complaints on the internet and Chrysler chooses to do nothing. Maybe they should have just gone bankrupt since they can't build a reliable vehicle. It seems to us a there should be a recall to repair the faulty brakes, especially after a class action suit was issued in 2006.

63 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

65 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/21/2004

Brakes pulsate and steering wheel shakes - dealer has repaired 4 times - vehicle only has 25,500 miles. Say manufacturing defect but will no longer repair as there has not been a recall on vehicle. Since there are so many reports of this - why has there not been a recall? there has not been a crash, but with faulty brakes, it can only be a matter of time. How can Jeep get away with this - they know and acknowledge the problem.
