37 Defogger Heater problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

My 1999 grand Jeep cherokee has the same most common problem of owners who own Jeeps from 1999-2004. The heater system blows cold air. Daimler/Chrysler is aware of the defect but will not cover the expensive cost to fix it. Instead they had handed over the cost to us.

38 Defogger Heater problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The heating unit has failed. It only blows cold air. I went online to check if it was something that I could fix myself because I called two dealers and they all want to charge $1200 or more to fix it. To my surprise, I found several forums and user groups online whereby people have complained of the same failure in their Jeep cherokees from year 99-04 models. What they all describe is the exact same problem and experience we had with our Jeep. First the passenger side goes out and only blows cold. . . . Then a few weeks later, the driver side does the same thing. I can not imagine why a recall has not been issued on this. The manufacturer acts as if this is not a problem. I would challenge someone to go back and look at how many of these have had to be replaced in those model years. It will be a shocking number.

39 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

No heat on drivers side. Passenger side marginally blows air. This is a recurring problem with this vehicle--all years! Jeep must be fully aware of it since there are so many complaints and they have a "fix", but at a high cost to the consumer. I will never buy another Chrysler product again.

40 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/26/2007

We own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The heating system stopped blowing hot air. When we took it in to the dealership they informed us that the blend doors were not functioning. They said this is a common problem on the Jeeps and that cost to repair it would be in the neighborhood of $1200. Apparently the entire dash needs to be removed and this takes 6hrs of labor to accomplish.

42 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/24/2007

My heat stopped working in my vehicle and I can not defrost my windows.

43 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

My Jeep 2000 Grand Cherokee suddenly will produce no heat, this is a safety concern since the windows will not defog and can create serious visibility problems. The heating system will only blow cold air, which can suddenly create condensation on the window and entirely obscure visibility. There were no events leading up to the failure, it just stopped working. Upon a short bit of research, it seems to be a very common problem with Jeep Grand Cherokee's from 2000-2004 and Jeep will not acknowledge it as a manufacturing defect even though thousands upon thousands are having this same safety problem happen to them.

44 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

No events lead to this. Both front seat heaters stopped working. Very prone on Jeeps. More recently, blend doors, heat/air controls stopped working. Half hot and half cold. Very prone to Grand Cherokee. Faulty design.

45 Defogger Heater problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee dual zone passenger side heat did not work at the onset of cold weather. Dealer stated the blend air door was broke. However to fix the broken part the entire dash assembly along with heater coil and ac coil had to be removed. The cost of the part was minimal compared to the labor expense to replace the part.

46 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

For several months I have been unable to defrost windows due to the common blend door problem with 99-04 Jeep Grand Cherokees. I have gone to several dealerships to have an estimate and have been quote over 1000. 00 on all occasions. Although I am without heat that is not my concern. It is the safety concern of not having the ability to defrost windows during extremely cold temperatures. I feel that this is huge safety concern for customers living in cold areas on the us. This is a problem that Jeep is aware of and happens on way too many vehicles to go unaddressed. Jeep should at least be forced to cover some of the cost for this costly defect. Please ensure that something is done about this.

47 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/30/2007

Heat not working on driver's side of car. Blower works sporadically and when it does work, cold air coming out of driver and center blowers. Heat does come out passenger side. Without defrost cannot drive vehicle in the cold. Had to bring in for service, just got $900 estimate to replace blend door and actuator. Have no choice but to pay this due to the climate I live in. This 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee has 71,00 miles on it.

48 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/28/2007

The heater does not work on my Jeep, it blows cold air. I took it to a dealer and it will cost me anywhere from $1,600 to $1,800 to repair the blend doors. I see on many web sites that this is an extremely common problem. Why has Jeep not stood up and taken responsibility for this faulty equipment? I am a 20 year old and I do not have the income for the payment , insurance and the costly repair.

49 Defogger Heater problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/22/2007

I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with automatic climate control, and 1 week ago I tried to use the heat and had nothing. I have blower functions, but it only blows cold air. I then got on the internet to find that all Grand Cherokee owners are being or soon will be affected. I also called some local dealerships to discuss with them. I found that there is service bulletins and new parts that were developed for this issue. I also found that the repair requires complete replacement of the hvac sub assembly at the cost of $900-$1200. They also say that because my heat died at 44000 miles that the warranty is up and they will not help unless I pay. The biggest problem with this issue is that with no heat, I can not defrost my windshield, or even the whole car. I drive 20 miles to work one way, on I-69, from indianapolis to noblesville, and I cannot imagine what it will be like on freezing, snowing day. Please research this and the other complaints in regard of this failure and make Chrysler corp. Do the right thing and fix this problem, before someone gets hurt or killed this winter.

50 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/15/2007

No heat from the passengers side of dual climate control systems well as odd odor. Would not clear the windshield of condensation. Jeep dealer recommended replacing the control unit ($500 plus labor) turns out the passenger side blend door was broken and the heater had to be replaced. The whole dash had to be removed, a $1200 - $2100 dealer job. I had the system repaired for about $850 at a private repair facility. This should not have happened to a vehicle with under 70,000 mile on it.

51 Defogger Heater problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/10/2007

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland blend door breakage/failure cold air blowing in when heat is on *mainly one sided issue* have not fixed yet but will be in the future.

52 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/20/2007

My '01 Grand Cherokee a/c and heater is uncontrollable. Fan comes on but no air from vents. This seems to be a defect that is not uncommon with this model. Several online sites show that this is not an isolated situation. 60 k miles and Jeep tells me that its out of warranty and they will not help.

53 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/20/2007

Heating sysytem problem in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited (no heat at all).

54 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

The dual-zone climate control on the Jeep Grand Cherokee overland stopped working. The 2 vents in the center of the dashboard respond to the climate control settings, and blow the appropriate temperature air. The remaining 3 vents in the dash, and 2 additional floor vents only blow air that is the temperature of the outside air. , in the summer time, 2 vents blow cold air, and the remaining 5 blow hot air. And in the winter, the opposite happens; 2 vents blow warm air, and the remaining 5 blow cold air. This was my second Grand Cherokee that has had this problem, and my brother's Grand Cherokee has also had this same exact problem. Upon speaking with dealers, it seems like hundreds of trucks need to have this identical issue fixed. It was related to the blend doors, which ere part of the dual zone system.

55 Defogger Heater problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/21/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that she is experiencing failure with her vehicle's power windows. She stated that her power windows fail to roll up. She has not contacted the manufacturer or the dealer. The heat shut off while the heat button was still activated. As a result, the air conditioner is not working either. The dealer stated that the cause of failure was the heating system and would cost $2,000 to be repaired. The dealer also recommended that she notify NHTSA to determine if there were any recalls on her vehicle. There were none that applied to her vehicle. The engine size was unknown. The current mileage is 38,830 and failure mileage was 37,500.

56 Defogger Heater problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/28/2007

Two problems: 1. The blower motor resistor burnt out and the ac/head fan quit working. It was sparking when I managed to disconnect the wire. Luckily, I was stopped and could reach it in time - had I been driving its very possible my vehicle would have burnt up. 2. No heat. Entire last winter I was forced to drive 2 hours per day constantly wiping fog off my windshield. I was told by a 'mechanic' it was a clogged heater core so I had to put up with it because I did not have the money to fix it at the time. Dangerous and cold, but I had no choice. Now I am trying to get my vehicle repaired I start researching and find there are entire web sites devoted solely to these two problems. 1. Blower motor resistor shorts out. To properly repair you have to replace the resistor and the dashboard wiring harness. . . Very costly!! $600+ 2. No heat due to bad blend doors. $1200+ 3. Both of these appear to affect Jeeps 1999-2004 year models how can Jeep continue to knowingly sale automobiles with 1 - a fire and safety hazard with the faulty resistor? 2 - a safety hazard with no heat due to faulty blend doors? google it. . . Both of these are very well known problems with these vehicles and are not isolated incidents. Please look at these two links provided. They just start to scratch the surface of how bad this problem really is. Jeep should be responsible for repairing both of these problems as they are both safety issues and they knew about them prior to the sale, not to mention the cost of repairing these items places an unfair burden on the owner since fair trade would mandate these known and recurring defects should have been disclosed prior to sale. These are not rare or isolated incidents, they are known problems Jeep failed to disclose or repair. . Read more...

57 Defogger Heater problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/05/2007

Windshield visibility frequently reduced due to failure of heater/cooling system, vehicle has no heat for defroster (or occupants). I took the car to the dealer, described the problem and was immediately told this was a known problem in the Jeep line with the blend door mechanism and would cost $1,200 to repair. Note: this was based solely on a description, no mechanic was required to look at the car; this issue is that well known to the dealership. Further, a diagnostic would require removal of the dash, costing $200-500 just to check/confirm. I reported the problem at 29,500 miles (of a 30,000 warranty) but was told I was beyond the warranty date. No corrective action or accomodation was offered.

58 Defogger Heater problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/19/2007

I own a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with 67. 900 miles. The events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windsheild,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of Jeep. Consequently,(1) the windsheild and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. To correct this problem, a blend air door"is necessary at a cost of approximately $850 ,inclusive of 7+ hours of labor. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems.

59 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/15/2007

Blend door failure 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have no heat on the passenger side. The passenger side of windshield forms ice, and dangerously impairing my vision, not to mention, it is cold in the vehicle cabin. Shame on crysler for not fixing a known problem.

60 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/16/2007

The hvac system in my 2001 Grand Cherokee Jeep has gone out on both the passenger side and the driver side of my vehicle. I feel there should have been a recall on this items from Chrysler corp. I understand there has been a problem with this mid-case blend assembly for quite some time. Now it is going to cost over a $1000. 00 to replace. I believe it should be seriously considered for recall because of the safety hazard of driving. The afternoon it went out, I was leaving from work and a blinding snow-blizzard came, the temperature dropped and I ran off the road, due to the my windows icing up and fogging up. . . I had no way to defrost them. I had to drive a considerable distance to get home. I put my vehicle in 4-wheel low and managed to get out of the ditch, but I was extremely lucky and very cold when I did reach my home.

61 Defogger Heater problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/24/2007

Passenger side heat quit working. This is a dual climate control vehicle. Passenger side only blows cold air.

62 Defogger Heater problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/22/2007

On January 22, 2007, I heard a "cracking" noise under the dash as I started my Jeep in the morning. Later that morning it became apparent that it was not possible to get any heat in the cabin, nor was it possible to defrost the windshield. After trying various settings, all that can be achieved is to blow cold (ambient) air (currently 4f) out of the various vents/defroster. This does very, very little to remove frost from the windshield. Additionally, the heater core has begun failing. This releases additional moisture into the cabin, causing even worse fogging (frosting this time of year). This combination of failures renders the defroster totally ineffective, and requires the dangerous act of wiping or scraping the inside of the window about every 5 minutes under normal winter conditions. I am informed that this condition is caused by the breakage of "mix doors" in the hvac system, a known defective "weak part" that is currently being replaced (at customer expense) on virtually all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees with automatic climate controls. Breakage of these parts can constitute a serious hazard, and should be a required recall by DC. I have had to undertake this repair myself - a huge task, as I do not have the $1800 to have the dealer repair it.

63 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/08/2007

The windshield defogger-defroster and climate control system are faulty . He electronic heat controller has been replaced in the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited on 2 previous occasions and the fault still occurs. The flow doors of the heating system are sticking open and preventing warm air from entering the defroster ducts or the cabin heating ducts. The vehicle often frosts over the windshield and side windows while driving and can not be safely cleared. I have taken the vehicle to the Jeep dealership for repairs twice while under the factory warranty and once after it expired. The cost of the repair is over $1,000. A manufacturers safety recall is in order to repair this defect.

64 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/07/2007

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. No heat on the passengers side in the winter, ac doesn't work correctly according to the dial settings. Defrost and defogger doesn't work as should. Have to have the drivers side window open some to be able to see and keep the windshield clear. Windshield fogged up too quickly once last winter and I put the vehicle in a ditch at 5am in the middle of winter. Got a small cut over the right eye. My understanding I will have to get the ac/heat blend doors and actuators replaced in the unit which requires the dash to be removed and cost is over 1000 us dollars. The parts are inferior and made of plastic and as I can see by the number of complaints on the internet there are many, many failures. I have not had the repair done because it's just too expensive.

On Nov. 29, 2006, purchased used 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee ltd. With 49,723 miles from Chrysler dealer. On Dec. 2, 2006, tried to use passenger heating and cooling. Could get only cold air. " took to second Chrysler mechanic shop for second opinion who said it was not blend door but could not diagnose cause of problem. . Read more...

68 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/19/2006

There was no heat on passenger side due to blend door failure. Therefore defrosting the windshield properly was not possible. This was followed shortly by a leaking heater core which filled the car with coolant mist during vehicle operation. The blend doors assemblies were replaced along with the heater core to solve the problems.

69 Defogger Heater problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/18/2006

Blend door failure. Cost $1100.

70 Defogger Heater problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

When the weather started getting colder, I tried to use the heat and I couldn't get any hot air to defrost, when my windshield began to frost and fog. While driving home, I had to first pull over and wipe the interior of my windshield, then on my 21 mile drive home, I had to constantly wipe the interior of the windshield while driving. I took the Jeep to the Jeep/Chrysler dealer and was quoted over $1500 for the repair. I can't afford this type of repair and do not have room on my credit cards. I managed to purchase the parts and do the repair myself, with my Jeep out of commission for over 2 weeks. I replaced the heater core, recirc blend door, the mid-case blend door, and 2 actuators. I have been told that this can be a consistently aggravating problem and don't look forward to having to do it again. Especially now that I have a newborn who will be traveling in the car. This can be a major safety issue, if this engineering discrepancy is not resolved. As far as I know, no one has been injured. . . Yet. This is an accident waiting to happen. I have pictures of all the bad parts and documented repairs thank you.
