36 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

I own a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2004--the problem I am having is with the steering. It is very hard to steer to the right the wheel locks and I cannot turn. I took the Jeep to hayes Chrysler Dodge Jeep and was told I needed a power steering pump and pressure line and a power steering gear box. The total quote is $1601. 00--I could not afford that so I took it to midas and they advised me there was a recall on this part and Jeep should replace the part free of charge. I pulled the recall notice and it does state to take the vehicle to the dealer and it would be replaced. I was told by the dealer and also Chrysler that my vn # was not on the recall list. . . . I am very upset because my vehicle is doing the same thing as stated in the recall but since my VIN number is not listed they cannot do anything. Please advise me what ic an do at this point. When I first purchased the vehicle I took it back the same month and told them something was wrong with the steering I do have documentation. I also took it back a 2nd time and they told me they could not find anything.

37 Power Steering Pump problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/22/2008

While driving at approximately 35-40 mph, the steering gear in my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee locked up. When I tried to make a right turn, the steering wheel turned freely but the steering of the car did not correspond. Luckily, I was able to stop the vehicle as it almost careened into a ditch. This problem caused the vehicle to veer off the side of the road, causing minor property damage to shrubbery but nearly causing an accident or injury to passengers or other motorists. When the vehicle came to rest, the steering would only turn approximately 20% to the right side. The vehicle was near my residence at time of incident and was slowly driven home, then taken the following week to the dealership to diagnose. The dealerships diagnosis was that the vehicle had a faulty steering gearbox, and that the travel stops within the steering gearbox had broken or otherwise malfunctioned, requiring the replacement of the entire steering gearbox unit. This problem is identical to the steering gearbox recall daimler-Chrysler issued on 2000 year model Jeep Grand Cherokees manufactured within 60 days of this vehicle. The cost for parts and labor to replace the gearbox and flush out any old steering fluid is estimated at $1,006. 95. The service history on the vehicle included replacement of the power steering pump (once or possibly even twice) while the vehicle was under factory warranty. The gearbox assembly has never required service, and never given any prior indication of being faulty. A telephone call to the Jeep customer service line resulted in an unsuccessful attempt to have Jeep share in the expense of replacing the faulty gearbox.

38 Power Steering Pump problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/09/2007

While backing slowly and turning, we experienced a catastrophic failure of the mounting bracket for the power steering pump on our 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5. 2 liter v-8. The failure caused the serpentine belt to fly loose, the pump to become inoperative and the pump to fall into the radiator fan which caused the vehicle to overheat and spray anti-freeze all over the engine compartment. Subsequent examination of the bracket showed an old fracture at the bolt hole nearest the first numeral molded into the part. At a salvage yard a nearly identical bracket from a 1994 model of the same vehicle showed that failure was beginning on that part in precisely the same location.

40 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/17/2006

After reading almost all complaints with other 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokees, I have to put in my two cents worth. I can relate to almost every complaint that there is. I just had both my front left and right window regulators replaced a month and a half apart, one just today at $327. 00 with my employee discount. (I work for a car dealership) last month, I have had almost $500. 00 worth of repairs for my power steering pump problems. I have had my brake rotors turned and resurfaced and am in need of doing it again. Then on the other hand, I have experienced problems with my dual control panel not working correctly which I have not have repaired yet because I don't have the money for that one and didn't know at the time that it was a problem. Then when my Jeep was under warranty I have had the air conditioner compressor replaced, new battery(for hard or no starting), amongst other repairs that I can't think of at the moment. I have also been experiencing hard starts with my truck and also the transmission not engaging or jumping (accelerating) while switching gears that the Jeep dealer has not been able to recognize as a problem. I feel that those new Chrysler commercials are not up to par as american and german engineering. Those germans know how to build vehicles in the first place and help repair them as the problem seem necessary.

43 Power Steering Pump problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

Upon starting the vehicle, I immediately heard a bang followed by loud clanging under the hood. I began backing out of my garage and noticed I had no power steering. At this point I estimated that the belt had broken and shut down the engine. On examining under the hood the power steering pump pulley was visibly out of alignment and the belt was wrapped around the fan. Closer examination revealed that the power steering pump bracket was broken into three pieces. I also have one bolt sheered off with the stud still stuck in the cylinder head. I have acquired a replacement part but the necessary replacement bolt was out of stock. Before repairs can proceed, I will need to drill the existing bolt out, possibly having to remove the cylinder head assy to gain the proper access. Although no injuries resulted, the car is not drivable in this condition and the failure has caused my family major inconvenience. Had this happened at a different time the consequences could have been much more severe.

44 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/14/2003

The consumer had the vehicle in the shop almost 10 times for repairs. The consumer argued that the power steering was out of order and she was unable to steer the vehicle in reverse. The vehicle had experienced other problems such as the drive pinion, heating pads, brake rotors, calipers, pads, power steering pump, the rear shock absorbers and rear sway bar links. The dealer was contacted about the problems no help was offered. It had appeared that there had been a recall issued for the Grand Cherokees built only from Nov 22- Dec 5 2000 for the power steering and the consumer missed it by a month, but the vehicle experienced the same problem as the recall that was issued. The consumer was very dissatisfied with the dealership. The vehicle also experienced three tire blowouts. The consumer was told the problem was caused by the gear box, there was a recall regarding the issue, however the consumers vehicle was not included in the recall. The front pinion seal leaked.

Power steering pump bracket broke in half making the vehicle very difficult to control. 46 Power Steering Pump problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/07/2002

While backing out of a parking space, I heard a loud snap and the suddenly lost the power steering. I could not make it home and had the vechicle towed to a local service station. The aaa tow truck man noticed that the serpentine belft was off the pulley. The power steering pump bracket snapped off the engine block. The head to one of the bolts on the bracket sheered off, leaving the stud in the engine block (probably needs to be drilled out or rebored). I plan to replace the part with the same aluminum dealer part, but I am very concerned about the related safety issue. I had my wife, infant and 3-yr old son in the car. If this would have happened at highway speeds or on a sharp turn, the results could have been disastrous. The dealership claims that this is a typical problem and the bracket can break. This is unacceptable!.

While backing out of a parking space, my wife heard a loud snap and suddenly couldn't steer the vehicle. She was able to make it home, where I discovered the serpentine belt was off the pulley. . Upon further inspection the next day, the mount that holds the power steering pump onto the engine block had snapped in 3 places. 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been in shop 5 times (current mileage:7500). I have had clattering/noises with sharp turns (transfer case fluid, then case itself, then pump replaced); gear whining noise Chrysler is blaming on the dana corp. My dealer "unable to fix problem as necessary tools are on back-order"; vibration when applying the brakes attributed to a warped rotor (per TSB); problems with keyless remote entry and slow refueling, something leaking from front end. Many other owners are having similar problems as evidenced by the multiple complaints on internet message boards (yahoo. Com; Jeepsunlimited. Com) Chrysler seems to be stonewalling on most of these problems, especially the dana corp. Rear-end problem. I'm very frustrated after having spent $38,000 on this vehicle!.
