2 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/03/2016

Air bags did not deploy after making 2 impacts, totaling vehicle dear Chrysler/Jeep my name is aaron mcclenon and I have been the proud owner of a 2003 Jeep Liberty renegade. On June 3, 2016 I was struck by another motorist on my home from work. I commute every day from the southwest suburbs of chicago to downtown chicago. I have taken the upmost pride in my Jeep, providing regular maintenance. In the past 6 months I have spent over $1500 in replacements. I recently purchased 4 brand new tires, a new alternator, a new muffler, oil pressure switch and an evap sensor. I have also made purchases to customize my Jeep, by adding neon lights in the inside, seat covers, and a new stereo system. Asides from all the love and attention I put into my Jeep, there was something about my accident that scared me the most. After the other vehicle struck me, my Jeep kept on rolling, hopping a curb, narrowly missing a tree and hopping another curb and totaling my Jeep. I suffered a left knee contusion in the end. The real horror is that my air bags did not deploy. For my vehicle to make 2 large impacts and no air bags has left me with a complete distrust in the brand. If my life was at a higher risk or if I had struck that tree or any other vehicle on the road, it¿s sad to think that the one safety feature that could have saved my life, took no action. Yes, a product liability lawsuit is possible because of this, but I want to ensure 100% that they¿re may be thousands out there that put their trust in their Jeep, not knowing that it could possibly be a fatal mistake. -aaron mcclenon.

3 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/02/2015

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the vehicle was vandalized, which caused the vehicle to have required repairs. The insurance company covered the dealer replacing the ignition switch, wiring, instrument panel, and the 4 wheel drive function, reprogrammed the master key, along with additional repairs. Months later, the service stability traction control warning lamp flashed and then remained lit. The contact also heard an abnormal noise while traveling over 40 mph each time the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that the clock spring assembly needed to be replaced, but the part was on backorder. The contact also checked with a second dealer who also indicated that the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact continued to experience the failure while waiting for the part. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

4 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/12/2014

Did not start in the morning, was completely dead, check the battery and it was 12. 42 volts, check the fuses and the relays (switch some of them to see for any changes ) and they were ok too. To keep the story short, it was the starter, but when I was trying to start the car noticed that when leaving the key on in the last click prior to start position, like 10 seconds later the airbag light came on making a sound and stays on all the time. When I took the key out noticed that the fuel gauge moved to the full position, put the key again and went from full to empty and then start moving to the actual fuel quantity. I noticed that if I took the key before the sound and light of the aibag, the gauge works fine, so when I am driving and have to stop I turn off the car and the gauge move to full again so I have to put the key on and took it out before the sound and light of the airbag came out again to "reset the gauge to normal position ". One other thing my power locks did not work with the beeper or with the buttons when the car is turn of off. Only works when the key is in the cylinder and in the position prior to start the engine, works on both the beeper and the buttons, all of this happens in the same day.

5 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/08/2014

The vehicle has been exhibiting issues with the igition switch similar to others such as the gm Chevrolet cobalt and Saturn ion. When the ingition switch is rotated to the start/crank position and the vehicle starts and the key is released it sometimes does not fully return to the on/run position from the start crank position. Although the engine is running and the vehicle can be driven some electrical function are offline due to the ignition switches failure to rully return to the on/run position. The situation is not usually noticed until the vehicle is in motion and one the the effected systems is used (turn signal, hvac, radio) systems that are effected and not receiving power are turn signals, radio, airbag, hvac. The switch can be moved into the on/run position and these systems then come on-line. This is a dangerous situation and may result in an accident (signal lamps not working, hvac defogger not working) or possible airbag non-deployment in a crash (possible injury or fatality). This issue has occured at least 3 times in the last two weeks. The vehicle in question is in immaculate condition and well maintained by an ase certified master auto technician> the vehicle has no significant accident or damage history.

6 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

When attempting to switch lanes, it felt as if the steering wheel locked and the vehicle began to swerve between lanes. I had no control over the steering, therefore the vehicle continued to swerve and eventually slid off road into a median full of trees. Once in the median, the vehicle began to roll over. The vehicle rolled 3 or 4 times, eventually coming to a stop passenger-side down. There was damage all over the body of the vehicle, including the front and sides. Airbags did not deploy. Vehicle was taken in less than a year ago to get fixed due to a recall on the air bag system, but airbags did not deploy during crash. I was taken via ambulance to a local trauma unit. Vehicle was totaled.
