The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4. The contact stated that vehicle would surge forward when shifting into any gear and the vehicle would also loose power abnormally. The egr (exhaust gas recirculation) valve melted, causing a burning smell to release into the vehicle. In addition, the gear shifter would shift out of park independently, causing the vehicle to roll away. The contact also stated that the rear passenger side door handle became defective, making it impossible to open the vehicle door from the interior of the vehicle and the abs, esp and traction control lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failures. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. . . . . Updated 06/18/12 the consumer also stated there was a problem with the control arm on the vehicle and because of the widespread problem a recall as issued. The consumer was then informed the recall was old, and her VIN was not included. The vehicle would loose power suddenly after driving forward, the windows would make a dragging noise, even though the dealer replace, the wheel speed sensor was replaced, the interior door handle on the passenger side was inoperative. The check engine light illuminated several times. Updated 06/22/12 updated 6/25/12 updated 06/29/12.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that when she attempted to make a left turn, the lights on the instrument panel blinked on and off intermittently. The failure began approximately one year ago. In addition, the interior lights blinked on and off when she accelerated in any direction and at any speed. She was also unable to lock the vehicle once she exited because the locking mechanism was inoperable. As a result, the vehicle was left unattended and unlocked. The dealer had not been notified. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, they did not offer any assistance. No repairs were performed. The current mileage was 60,000 and the approximate failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4. Upon starting the vehicle, all of the lights on the instrument panel illuminated. The next day, the abs and the traction control lights remained illuminated while the tachometer and speedometer did not function. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The vehicle had not been repaired but the problem still occurred whenever the contact drove the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 56,500. The current mileage was approximately 57,000. Updated 05/18/10.
The speedometer suddenly stops working and, when you press the brake the vehicle comes to a grinding halt. Then happens every year once, I brought this vehicle in 2002 and so far it has happened 6 times. Suddenly the vehicle will start behaving like this, where the speedometer will move to zero and then from then until I service where they replace the whole speed sensor unit the speedometer doesn't work. Unfortunately during this time the vehicle can stop anywhere when ever brake is applied.
This is for a 2005 Jeep Liberty. Faulty speedometer. Was replaced 2 times within 2 years. Chrysler TSB indicates replacement of the rear differential fluid every year to resolve the problem. There is a problem with engineering if you have to do this. They will replace the speedometer for ~ $210. 00 or change the fluid for $199. 00 every year. Consumers are being held hostage for this annual charge for the fluid change as I have had my speedometer changed 2 times already. The maintenance schedule says nothing about this in schedule a. However the dealer refers to schedule b as what they recommend due to this issue. However, the book sites an exclusion in schedule b if your vehicle is used commercially, heavy hauling, snow plowing, of road use, etc. I have as of 08/06/2008 42,722 miles on this, and do to prescribe to the above exclusion.

We have a new 2007 Jeep Liberty limited, purchased last March. Immediately we noticed that the speedometer was inaccurate and always reading fast. This was noticeably evident as we passed through safety and school zones that show the car speed on the roadside. I had the dealer check it out and they couldn't find any problems. So we started measuring using roadside mileage markers and a timer. We found that at 60 miles/hour it took 315 seconds to go 5 miles. That's 5% @ 60 mph or 3 mph. We also found that it was also off by 3 mph at all other speeds too, so at 30 mph that turned out to be 10%. That's unacceptable ! however Chrysler says that's acceptable and in fact points out in a printed reply that the government allows that degree of accuracy now assuming my average speed is about 45 mph, 3 mph is a 7. 5% inaccuracy. I also purchased a long term warranty agreement from Chrysler and I will be short changed on that by 7. 5% also and that's fraud! all I want is for the Chrysler to fix the algorithm that computes the speed and odometer reading. The only variable the dealer can adjust is the tire size. Does the government safety standards allow for 7. 5% inaccuracy?.

Safety defect 1) my wife was driving in the rain and went to the mall. Just after she left the mall, the 2) dashboard lights for abs, electronic stability control, and traction control came on and stayed lit. Within a mile or so, my wife had spun across 3 lanes of interstate traffic and into the guardrail while attempting to enter interstate. 3) at this point the Jeep Liberty has been towed to a body shop. Nothing to repair failure has yet been attempted.
While driving my Jeep on the interstate with the lights on -- my abs light and brake light illuminated, this was followed by my speedometer waving up and down (for example I stopped and the speedometer was bouncing from 0 to 100 mph), followed by the check engine light illuminating and then sometime in there I realized the odometer, both in the dashboard instrument panel and in the overhead instrument panel stopped working. I have done research on this issue via the internet and this seems to be a fairly popular issue due to wire shorts. I have already replaced the speed sensor under the rear axle just to have the Jeep do it again in about 10 minutes of in city driving with just one person in the vehicle, and now the Jeep is headed to the shop. I am unsure if the abs system is working properly during this time which is hazardous, not to mention the odometer isn't running which is illegal.
This problem occurred while driving on the freeway. First the speedometer started going back and forth between 0 and 60 then all electrical power starting shutting down. Headlights, interior lights and all meters stopped working. Then the vehicle started stalling. The vehicle is not that old and it was the computer that needed to be replaced. I have heard many people complaining of this and thought I should make someone aware of it.
The contact stated that the 2004 Jeep Liberty was experiencing the same symptoms described in recall 07v192000, but this vehicle was not included. She would like to have the scope of the recall expanded for the intermittent radio/ip/side mirrors/rear wiper. There was also a buzzing somewhere in the dashboard. The speedometer was acting erratically. Update 05/04/tr.

I bought my 2002 Jeep Liberty in 2006. Several weeks after I purchased it I noticed that if I placed heavy objects in the trunk, or went over a large bump, the speedometer would flick down to zero, and in some cases, stay at zero until I removed the items from the trunk. I didn't pay much attention to it as I generally don't put heavy things in the trunk and after a while I forgot about it. Several months later I noticed it again, and the speedometer and tachometer flicked down to zero, even when driving 70. This time I mentioned it to some friends and they suggested that if these things don't work then the correct number of miles driven is not recorded on the odometer. I took it to the caryard where I purchased it to get advice, but seeing as though I didn't buy it from a Jeep dealer they weren't helpful and were expecting several hundred dollars just to figure out what the problem was. I took it to a Jeep dealer and they were also not much help and wanted a few hundred dollars just to determine the problem. So basically, I don't know how to proceed as either way it's going to cost me at least several hundred dollars (on what was a 4 year old vehicle when the problem first happened) to get the thing fixed.
After one month, car speedometer, tachometer and various safety systems on the instrument panel stopped working after first service these include abs, hand brake light, tpm. Chrysler has not been able to fix problem to date and are now claiming it is an abs 'pump'.
The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. While the contact was driving approximately 60 mph, the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel and suddenly the engine stalled. Also, the speed odometer displayed an inaccurate reading which fluctuated when traveling. The engine restarted and the vehicle was able to resume normally. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where there were replacements of the cruise control sensor, speed control and computer module. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on seven separate occasions for the identical failures. The contact had concern of the safety hazard involved. The failure continued to occur after the service repairs. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.
We bought this truck and 3 days later the speed sensor went out in it. It was still under warranty so we took it to the dealer and they fixed it. About 7 months later the same thing went out. I have had this truck for about 3 years and we have put 4 speed sensors in it.
