4 Starter problem of the 2009 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/07/2017

On Friday, 07. 07. 2017, as I was driving into a turn lane from the hwy, I had slowed way down for traffic then picked up speed slightly, not even 10 mph, to follow cars in the turn lane when the accelerator became sluggish and the Jeep came to a stop. As I pressed the accelerator again there was a very loud pop from under the hood. Everything quit, the engine, the electric, the starter would not turn over when I tried to start it again or the emergency flashers. Just before this happened the engine light and, what I found out later, the electronic throttle control light came on. I was confused at what just happened. Thinking what I saw next was steam coming from under the Jeep was steam I popped the hood to go look. There was traffic all around on the hwy. Once I opened the hood I found the engine compartment was on fire, back against the firewall between the engine and the steering column, behind the battery. The fire got bigger once the hood was open, it spread very fast. People in other cars were yelling and a guy stopped to help me and told me to get away from the Jeep because it was gas that was burning. The fire dept was called yet by the time they got there the whole front end of the Jeep was destroyed.

5 Starter problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/17/2016

A year ago while highway driving for several miles, the engine wire harness from starter to battery caught fire. The harness was destroyed. A replacement from a salvage yard went about 100' and it also caught fire destroying itself. Another harness was installed and a year later the same fire on the same harness occurred yesterday.

6 Starter problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/14/2016

My 2006 Jeep Liberty will not start or crank. The computer does not show any codes. The battery had power, the relays are fine and the starter is fine. When you are in the Jeep and try to start it, it does nothing. Its like you forgot and left it out of park and tried to start it. The Jeep does not click or even attempt to start. No one seems to know what's wrong with it. I love my Jeep and it had been well taken care of. I have had numerous issues, and recalls. I still love my little Liberty. If you could just help with a diagnosis, I would be forever grateful!.

7 Starter problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/10/2015

Car would not start after being parked for about 45 minutes. We guessed it was a battery, starter or alternator. Had towed to dealership and was advised that the tipm was bad and needed to be replaceed. After further review, I see that I was a lucky one as the tipm has all manner of issues when it starts to go bad. The dealer is telling me I have to wait 3 weeks for a backordered part due to a national recall of other model years. This is going to cost an unreasonable amount in both repair and rental car costs.

8 Starter problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

9 Starter problem of the 2004 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/29/2012

I attempted to start the car but the starter wouldn't turn over. I checked the fuses and relays for the ignition system, and everything was ok. I had to have the car towed to the dealer. The dealer told me that the entire steering column had to be replaced, because 2 tabs which held the ignition switch were broken. I've searched online sites and find that there seems to be all kinds of problems with the steering column and ignitions switches on the Jeep Liberty. Cost of this "minor" repair $600 plus towing. Mileage 82k.

Failure Date: 11/18/2011

The car decides when it wants to start. It just makes a cluncking noise, after about 8 tries it will start. I have replaced the battery, starter and wiring harness. The doors just started to not lock or unlock a few months back. They told me to change the tipm. I have put in well over $1000. 00 an now they want another $500. 00.

11 Starter problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/31/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start after several attempts. The vehicle was then towed to a local mechanic where he was advised that the ignition switch and steering column would need to be replaced. There was no electrical current passing through the starter and the mechanic advised that there were aluminum pieces that fractured in the steering column and caused the failure. The vehicle was not repaired because the parts needed were on backorder. The contact believed that the manufacturer was ignoring the issue which he stated was a severe safety issue. In addition, the contact stated that the transmission was replaced twice since owning the vehicle. The failure mileage was 85,100. The VIN was not available.

12 Starter problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/09/2010

2002 Jeep Liberty. Key difficult to turn and engage starter. Once started key can easily fall out of ignition with car moving down the road! by searching the internet I see this is a very common problem with Jeep ignitions. Where is the recall?? obviously a manufacturing defect and dangerous safety item! this occurs almost on a daily basis. Am waiting for the time when even fiddling with key 20 minutes and it still won't start or turn.

16 Starter problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/31/2006

Failure to start- using key and remote starter. When the key was turned, it went all the way over and the engine did not crank, no noises from battery- just nothing. This occurred twice over a two month period, usually after about 15-20 minutes it would start. Recently the problem has progressed from failing to start,to the bigger problem of dying when it is running. The vehicle will be running and all of a sudden dies with no warning. This is a safety hazard as it can happen at any time, at any speed. The dealership has had the vehicle now for a week and cannot duplicate the problem. The car has just over 14,000 miles on it and should not be having these problems. I do not feel safe in my own vehicle.

17 Starter problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/05/2005

Jeep Liberty pulls to right, will stop dead in its tracks while in drive, hard to control, thumping noise, metal to metal grinding from front end, seat belts do not work properly, hard to start, front seat covers rippled, paint peeled on hood, tailgate, breaks only work some of the time, shakes and hard to control on speed above 35 mph, all interior weather stripping came off. Same complaints from 1/7/03 ball joints replaced on recall on 1/10/03 still had pulling to right problems, shaking,. Weather stripping all fell off on interior of car, acts like wheels are binding. 3/4/03 same complaints pulling to right, stops dead in its track, hard to control, wheels bind, dealer could not duplicate complaints (did not write up work order) 3/27/03 dealer installed interior weather stripping, same complaints as 1/10/03,3/4/03. Again on 6/2/03 took Jeep Liberty to dealer took a test drive could not verify complaints. Did not write up a work order. 1/16/04 Jeep Liberty hard to start, pulls to right, Jeep shakes & vibrates hard to control, seat belts do not work, seat rippling, car stops dead it its tracks, dealer fixed lower ball joints again on 2/13/04 at 23,850 miles. 2-13-04 picked up car from dealer still had same problems" dealer stated " this is how Jeeps drive" they are nuts! 11-04 dealer took test drive was still having problems claimed everything okay. Did not right up a work order. 5/27/05 had massive problems brakes would go to the floor, sometime would work and other time not. Took to nearest brake place pads, okay, but wheel cylinder leaked. Claim it could be a intermittent failure of master cylinder, called dealer ship no part available. 7/5/05 took to dealer again with same problems,r they had not even looked at it. Removed Jeep and took to private auto placed,ut with intermittent problems you could replace most of the parts on the car & you may not cure the problems.
