36 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2004 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/21/2014

The gas consistently overflows in this vehicle when filling up the tank. It's like there is no safety stop to keep the gas from filling. It ends up gushing all over the side of the vehicle and the ground when I try to fill up the tank. I never let the tank fill automatically at the pump. I watch the gallons meter as I'm pumping the gas to estimate when to stop pumping gas but it is still very unpredictable. Even the interior of the vehicle smells like gasoline when this happens.

37 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/03/2014

I purchased what appeared to be a well maintained 2006 Jeep from a local reputable dealer at a cost over of 10 grand on 10/3/14. The first tank fill up the gas overflowed out of the tank. There was no "stop" the gas just came out. I asked the cashier if there was a problem with the gas pump and they said they didn't know. So, the next gas fill up a week later, the gas shot out of the tank this time. Still no warning to stop filling the tank with a gas "stop". I contacted the dealer, who could not find anything mechanically wrong with the tank, and had to pay for and send the car to a local Jeep dealer for repair. To make a long story short, they replaced the gas tank. Albeit I received the car back with less gas than I had left it with. Took the car home, filed the car on Friday 11/7/14 and the gas mechanism did stop the gas, but only after gas leaked out from the gas tank again, and they never even tested the car to make sure it didn¿t happen again! as I found out later, they replaced the tank with a used tank. I am incredulous about this issue. My dealer is going to take care of this issue, I hope. And if it is not fixable, I will never buy another Jeep or Chrysler product! from what I am reading on the web no one is listening to us Jeep owners. Thankfully I have a small warranty period that covers this issue, but I implore you to reopen this issue. I can attest this is not internet hype. I have worked hard for most of my life and feel as a consumer I am being taken advantage of. To make such a substantial purchase to only find out that thousands of others are being ignored with the same issue is beyond me. Please fix what is already broken.

38 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that upon filling the fuel, there was a leak coming from the fuel tank. There was a strong odor of fumes inside and outside the vehicle due to the failure. The contact notified the authorized dealer several times and was waiting for a remedy to determine the repair. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 13v252000 fuel system, gasoline and structure) and stated that the part was not available. The dealer did not give a specific date for when the part would become available. The manufacturer was also contacted and could not provide an estimated date for when the contacts vehicle would receive the recall repair. Dyd.

39 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

About a quart of gas will "burp" out directly after the pump has kicked off, spilling over the side of the Jeep and onto the person pumping gas. The odd thing is that it actually shoots out under some pressure. The problem is not caused by over-filling. At the dealership I was told I would need to replace the fuel tank. The spillage is a major issue by itself, but I am very concerned about safety issues if an accident occurs. Will this problem cause a fire hazard during an accident? if I replace the gas tank now, will I have the same problem after the next 45,000 miles. Replacing the tank is extreme as a regular maintenance item.

40 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

Tank spills gas on every fill-up. No madder how slow you fill it. But slower filling spill less gas then fast filling. Alway have to wipe up excess gas that spills down fender. This creates a safety issue every time you fill up.

41 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/17/2014

Purchased vehicle used in 2013 11/17/2015 1. Engine continues to run when key is removed from ignition switch. While parked. First noticed last week 11/08/2015 (only as long as the preset time on the radio shut off or the door is opened) 2. With cruise control set and going up hill, transmission down shifts to maintain speed. While trying to keep speed up and then break applied, excessive force is required to dis-engage cruise control. While driving at normal speeds. For as long as I can remember. (break switch has been changed twice) 3. While filling fuel tank at gas station, paying close attention to the pump, fuel will pour out from the filler neck after the pump has shut off. For as long as I can remember. (many occasions) 4. Check engine light continuously on. Possible damage to hoses on emissions canister in left rear wheel well due to gas spillage? (as long as I can remember) 5. Gas cap indicator comes on at start. Possible damage to hoses on emissions canister in left rear wheel well due to gas spillage? (need to manually turn off, changed gas cap twice) 6. It seems that all things electrical have a delay to their function, flashing high beams, honking horn. . . While parked or driving. For as long as I can remember. (all of the time).

42 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2009 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

Fuel inlet check valve in gas tank fails, resulting in fill flow back out of the tank when filling vehicle with gasoline. There is no indication when this valve fails except when filling the vehicle, gas comes shooting out, pouring all over the vehicle and the ground. This causes a risk for fire and is an environmental hazard. Unsuspecting consumers may be covered in gasoline if they are standing next to the vehicle at the time of failure.

43 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/05/2014

A year ago, my fuel tank started to intermittently overflow a huge puddle of gas at the filling station when I filled up. Now it happens every time I fuel up. I took to the dealer Saturday and they said its a common problem among cherokees, but not Libertys and there is no recall for either vehicle. The problem is a valve clog in the fuel tank. The fix is an $1800 new fuel tank. That's not going to happen! this seems to be a dangerous problem given all the fires at gas stations recently. Every time I fill up I leave a large puddle of gas on the ground, all over my car and have to ride with the windows rolled down for first half hour after filling. Only affordable fix is to not fill, but that's next to impossible to gauge. Seems like you should look into this Jeep-wide (and I think Chrysler-wide) problem.

44 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

I was filling the vehicle with gas. Instead of shutting off when the tank was full approximately a quart of gas splashed up on me and all over the rear fender of the car. I am pretty upset because a Jeep dealership in anderson, in said that was supposed to happen. We had the same issue with an older Liberty, and we were given a lifetime warranty for the repair. I was told my vehicle is not covered by that warranty. I don't believe that is supposed to happen, since it hasn't happened to me with the prior vehicles that I've owned, and I wonder if Jeep has corrected a problem that they are aware of, or if they are just kicking the can down the road.

45 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/04/2014

Same gas problem it overflows tank when filling it. Abs light, esp bas, and traction control lights came on and brakes go all the way to the floor at times. Window regulators keep going out making my vehicle unsafe for me to put my child in. As a single parent I cannot afford to keep paying for costly repairs (mainly the windows) to prevent my child from getting sick in wisconsin winter. I do not have time in my day to sit and wait on repairs to be done. I hate risking frost bite when my window decides to fall and I'm trying to hold it up! it is now snowing and my drivers side window has fallen into my door yet again and it is 2 am and I really hope garbage bags keep it dry!.

46 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

Every time I fill up my 2007 Jeep Liberty with gas the gas gushes out and all over the car and me even before the tank is full. I never top off so it is not the issue of over filling the tank. I also always fill manually my husband locks the gas pump, it doesn't matter which way we fill up it always spills out before the automatic shut off. . . Sometimes also when the tank is empty it still spills every where too. This to me suggests that there is a design flaw in the gas tank, I have only had this issue with this specific car.

47 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/23/2013

When filling the vehicle with gas, the fuel overflows onto the side of the car, onto the ground and sometimes, if you forget and don't stand back far enough, is will splash onto who ever is filling the tank. This started in the fall of 2013 and continued off and on until the winter of 2014 when it became an every fill up issue. We did some research and found that older models of Jeep Liberty had the same problem, and had been recalled to have the tanks replaced. When we contacted Jeep they told us that my vehicle was not included in the recall, and that they would not do anything to help with the cost of replacing the tank. I had some other work done this last week on my Liberty and found out that to correct the problem, I would have to pay $710. 00 for the tank and $365. 00 for the labor. Again we contacted Jeep, and again were told that they would not do anything to help with the repair. I don't think that I should have to spend over $1000. 00 to correct an issue that Jeep is aware of and should be held responsible for. I feel that this is a safety issue, not only when fueling, but if you spill gas all over the ground at the gas station, there could be a fire. I don't know if it could cause a fire in the case of an accident. I hope not.

48 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/17/2013

Fuel tank overflows when filling causing gasoline spillage on ground and person filling vehicle.

49 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/28/2013

I received a recall letter in 2013 recall number n46 and NHTSA campaign number 13v-252. I have not received further notification to take my Jeep in to be repaied. I called my local dealer who said they have not received any information or parts to repair our Jeeps. This is a safety issue. . . . Why has it taken a year to get the parts to the dealers to fix our Jeeps? when filling the vehicle with gas, the pump's handle will suddenly and forcibly stop (as though the tank were full) and gasoline will spit out of the fuel opening, despite the fact it is gallons away from being filled to full capacity. This happens with every different gas station's pump handles, so to be clear, it is not an issue with the pump or handle, or the individual's ability to pump gas correctly; it is an issue with the gas line of this vehicle and the indicator or regulator or whatever part is defective.

50 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2004 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/14/2013

Chrysler not fulfilling NHTSA 13v-252 safety recall to protect rear fuel tank from explosion by installing a trailer hitch. Spitzer Dodge of mansfield, ohio continues to have "no parts" for this recall, but I could pay to have them install one.

51 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

On multipe occasions since buying the vehicle from a dealer in 2011, while filling up the gas tank the gas has not automatically shut off at the full point causing gas to flow onto the rear quarter panel, and on my hands and jeans. On multiple occasions I have had my duaghter in the vehicle who is still in a car seat and must be picked up and helped in and out of the vehicle. Cannot leave my daughter in the vehicle to wash fuel off my hands, and had to hlep her with gas on me. This has been reported many times and yet nothing has been done. Before even leaving the parking lot with new vehicle dealer took vehicle and filled up gass tank, I was never notified of overflow issues at the dealership, or when the dealer returned with the vehicle. I now slow the gas pump down to avoid the overflow but it still does it just not to the point of spraying upward towards my face.

52 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/10/2013

The vehicle consistently spills fuel upon filling the tank. Automatic shutoffs at gas stations do not prevent this from happening. It has happened at different gas stations in different states, so I do not believe it is caused by the gas station pumping system. Some spills have been up to 0. 5 gallons. In my opinion this presents a severe fire hazard.

53 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/08/2013

I am the original owner of this Jeep Liberty first of all and I love it, but it is dangerous! I can't fill the gas tank on my Jeep Liberty with out it spewing back out. The first time it happened gas was all on the ground at the gas station. It got all over my hands and paints leg and burned my skin. I was out of town and didn't have an extra pair of pants to change into. All I could do is pull off at the next exit and try to clean my skin in the restroom. Now I have to hold my ear down to the gas nozzle to hear the tank filling up. My husband can't hear well so I can't let him fuel the Liberty. Out of fear of gas getting on others and on the ground, I am the only one that fuels the tank. Chrysler will not replace the gas tank because it shows no problem under my VIN number. This is a public and environmental safety problem with gasoline on people and all over the ground! I need this tank replaced, just thunk about it. . . . 1/2 gallon of gasoline on the ground for every other Jeep Liberty like mine out there. I talked with Jeep customer service again today and was still denied.

54 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Fuel spews out of the fuel filler opening after the gas pump shuts off causing fuel to spill on to the vehicle body (both painted and plastic areas), on the ground, and on the person filling the Jeep. This condition has existed for a year before filling this complaint. Apparently this is a wide spread issue across all Jeep lines. The only fix available is complete replacement of the fuel tank (estimated $1700. 00) at the owners expense. Model 2007 and up Jeep Liberty's have a recall for this issue, but not my 2006 per my local dealer.

55 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/11/2013

While filling up my 2008 Jeep Liberty after the gas shuts off at the pump there is gas over flow from the tank all over the side of the truck and the ground below. I do not over fill my gas tank and I even try to stop before the tank is completely full, yet there is gas that flows back out of the tank after filling up my vehicle. This is a continual issue with the vehicle when I fill it up and I fill up at least 2 times a week due to the long commute that I have. I find that this is a hazard because I put my 4 year old daughter in the vehicle using the driver's side rear passenger door and the gasoline that has spilled is usually still present no matter how carefully I try to clean it up and off of the vehicle. Also there is always gasoline on the ground at the pump after I am done pumping gas which cannot be good for the environment or the next person who has to get gas after me.

56 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/04/2013

For the past two months everytime I fill my fuel tank it overflows dramatically. While filling the tank I always follow the prescribed safety measures - I do not put anything under the handle that mechanically holds the nozzle open, I do not try to fill the tank to the very brim and I place the nozzle bellows directly on the fill tube. Despite this the tank consistently overflows down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. Most of the time the instant the nozzle bellows is separated from the fill tube (after the nozzle clicks signaling the tank is at the safe fill point) the gas "burps" out a distance of up to a foot which initially landed on me. This is obviously a safety concern to the individual pumping gas as well as an environmental concern. The Jeep service representative informed me that a new gas tank is required to replace the fill tube check valve which he informed me is an integral part of the tank. I researched on the internet to see if this is a common problem and I found that for several years people have been experiencing the same problem. Some people even put a video of this happening on youtube.

57 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

While filling up with gas, if you try to fill the tank, gas pours out of the tank before the hose can shut itself off. Gas covers the side of the car, is all over anyone standing near and the ground. When I walk away from the car, the gas station attendant says I must stay with the car during the gassing process. Is it safe to have a car where the auto shutoff doesn't work for a fluid as flammable as gas? I have tried many gas stations, this occurs at every station, and hoped the problem would correct itself, it has not.

58 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

When filling up my gas tank, the fuel will spit back out. This happens at the beginning, middle, or end of when I'm fueling up. It's more like a geyser of fuel spilling back at me that gets all over me, the car, and most dangerously, all over the ground of the gas station. It happens nearly every time I fill up. It doesn't matter what gas station I am at, or how I'm positioning the hose. This has been happening for over a year, but has gotten increasingly worse recently. Very dangerous, frightening, and bad for the environment.

59 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/29/2012

Jeep Liberty spurts fuel when filling up. This has happened on numerous occasions. Auto shutoff on fuel pump/nozzle shuts off then a large quantity of fuel spurts out of tank all over side of car and ground. This is an environmental and human safety hazard. Now when filling up, I step away from the car and let the spurting finish. It happens every time I fill up. Also happens when I don't set pump/nozzle to auto shut off, but when I do that, I get fuel all over my hands.

60 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/17/2012

When filling the tank with gas, the gas shoots out of the tank when removing the nozzle, spraying all over the car, myself and the ground. At first I thought it was the pump at the gas station but it has happened multiple times at different gas stations. I brought the car to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a problem with the valve in the tank, which cannot be fixed unless you replace the entire gas tank at the cost of $800.

61 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2009 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/17/2012

When filling gas tank fuel spits back out of tank all over body and me if not standing away from nozzle. This just started happening just as Jeep warranty ran out. Dealer will not fix problem unless I spend $700 for new tank. I feel this a safety problem that Jeep should fix this problem at no charge. I understand there are safety bulletins out on this problem on several models of Jeeps.

62 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/05/2012

This is a complaint about the fuel issue that I have seen on here already. When I go to put fuel into the gas tank, it will not stop at the end as it's filling up. It just overflows. I would say at least a few cups of fuel flows down the side of the Jeep and down into the bottom of the vehicle and wheel well. I know that at some point it will lead to rust/corrosion among many other issues. I really wish this could be looked at and possibly fixed by manufacturer. It doesn't make sense that there are more than enough complaints about the same issue, with no help from the manufacturer. I also have the same problems as others with the windows. The regulator has a piece that breaks and then the whole regulator has to be replaced. This has happened 3 times already on different windows. Lastly, I just recently had an issue where the Jeep wouldn't start. The console lights and guages work fine and it acted like all was well, but the car wouldn't turn over when the key was turned. The result was the ignition switch actuator pin. It has a piece that breaks off and when that happens, the Jeep wont be able start. It isn't an easy fix for someone who isn't mechanically capable. Again, this is an issue that has happened to many people and honestly the manufacturer should do something about this. I could complain about more, but let's just leave it at that.

63 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/03/2012

When filling up with gas and tank is fuel the nossel stops and then gas bubbles out the fuel tank and down the side of the vehicle. I even try going slow but as soon and it gets full some fuel comes out. I took this to don miller Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram service center in madison, WI and they informed that the rollover valve is not working and I would need the whole fuel tank replaced. I know from research online that this is a safety issue due to the fact that in the chance of a rollover this keeps fuels from spilling out of the gas tank that may cause a fire. I have also seen other recalls for other chryster makes and models including other Jeep models for this same issue and wonder if the the Jeep Libertys should be included as well. Thank you.

64 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/15/2012

When filling my gas tank to full, the fuels flows out of the filler tube before the pump shuts off, Chrysler acknowledged this by sending out a extended warranty on the effected parts for some owners of 07 and 08 models, but refuses to issues the same to my 07 Jeep Liberty. What gives?.

65 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/08/2012

When filling the gas tank, the automatic pump shutoff does not work causing the gasoline to shoot out and all over the car and myself. This does not happen at just one gas station, but at all of them and has occurred repeatedly since buying the car last August.

66 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/04/2012

While filling fuel tank, fuel began to be spit out of the filler neck. Fuel dispenser had clicked and shut off fuel delivery when this occurred. This occurs every time the gas tank is filled. I doesn't matter whether the tank is filled slowly or fast. Since vehicle is out of warranty dealers refuse to do anything about this issue.

67 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2011 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/03/2012

When filling the gas tank, gasoline overflows and spills out of the vehicle. This happens every time I fill up! it's a very dangerous situation and not very good for the environment!.

68 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Just like many other Jeep liberties, fuel spews out, when I am filling the tank up. It does not matter which station, or brand that I use. The pump shuts of, followed by about 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of fuel coming back out. This is dangerous to the environment, the body of the vehicle, and to me. I had the problem diagnosed at a local Chrysler dealership as the vehicle needing a new fuel tank. I contacted Chrysler this morning, and they said since there isn't a recall, they would not do anything to help me out. Since this is obviously a manufacturing defect, since so many people have the exact same problem, Chrysler should be fixing this problem, at their expense! I should not have to pay to fix Chrysler's mistakes.

69 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

When filling the fuel tank, the pump does not automatically turn off. Resulting in fuel spraying all over operator, Jeep, and pavement. I have read many other similar complaints, is Chrysler going to step-up and recall this potentially dangerous problem before someone is seriously injured?.

70 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/16/2012

When pumping gas, the gas pump shuts off as expected however gasoline spews out of the Jeep's filling system. Tried different pumps same results, this occurs without "topping off the tank". This I a serious safety hazard with gas spraying on my face, clothing and overflowing on my shoes, hands, vehicle and ground. I have been yelled at by gas station clerks because it is a safety hazard.
