Ever since I purchased the Jeep, it has been a reliable vehicle. The other day, I went to start it and the instrument cluster was unresponsive and the airbag light was on. I tried replacing the fuse and found it to be good, receiving power. I started to check websites for similar problems and found a recall for the exact problem I was having. This recall described exactly what was happening to my Jeep. The recall is found here recall 99v117000: instrument panel ground screws loose the left side and right side instrument panel wiring ground attachment screws could loosen over time. If the left side screw loosens, the instrument panel gauges may not function when the headlamps are turned on. If the right side screw loosens, the defroster blower motor may not function. Well, I took a copy of the recall to my local Jeep dealership, bluebonnet Jeep in new braunfels, texas. As soon as I walked through the door, I started telling them about the problem with the Jeep and how similar it was to the recall. I showed them a copy of the recall and continued telling them how it was behaving. The dealer asked me if I purchased the Jeep from them and I told them no. They were very concerned about me not buying the Jeep from them, they went out and copied the VIN number down. The attendant stated they could not help me because it was not showing up as being a recall issue. I told them it was giving me all the same problems as this recall and they said they did not care, if the number does not show up on their computer, they will not help. I believe the original recall effects more models of Jeep than originally stated and respectfully request this to be investigated. Thanks.

When performing a left hand turn while accelerating away from a stop my air bag warning light and associated chime came on. While driving in a straight line with the wheel centered the light stayed locked in, during a sweeping right hand turn the air bag warning light extinguished. This pattern continued until I returned home and checked that the steering wheel position was in fact the cause of the air bag warning light and associated chime. Any steering wheel position left of center would immediately cause the light and chime and any position right of center of would extinguish the light within 10 seconds. I knew at this point that the steering wheel clock spring wiring assembly was faulty and scheduled a dealership appointment for verification and repair. Dealership performed a troublecode check and received dtc: b1b02-driver airbag squib 1 circuit open. Dealership further confirmed by cycling the steering wheel and code went from active to stored. The clock spring was replaced and retested similarly to my above steering wheel position check and no more lights, chimes, or trouble codes were expressed. Faulty clockspring ribbon wire assemblies are a recurring quality and safety issue with Chrysler vehicles and Jeep wranger jk's specifically. Per this website, actions have been taken to recall 2008-2012 rhd jk's and a customer satisfaction warranty extension has been issued for 2007 lhd jk's of 10 years, 150000 miles. This is most certainly a safety issue as a faulty clock spring can result in the driver side airbag not deploying in an accident if the proper conditions are met, and depending upon the nature of the fault in the clockspring the esc system can also malfunction due to the lack of steering input signal to the system. Further investigation for all affected makes, models, and model years, must be completed in the interest of public safety.

Dodge dealership has inspected my Jeep for an airbag warning light illuminated. I have an extended warranty from millennium and the will not cover the repair. The problem has been diagnosed as a faulty clock spring. This is a lhd vehicle. The recall id 94030 is for the rhd Jeep. If left hand drive Jeeps are having the same problems, how can this just be on the right hand drive only? recall id # 94030 - air bags:frontal component air bags:frontal model affected Wrangler potential units affected 5437 recall date: Nov 02, 2011 model affected: 2008 Jeep Wrangler summary: Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 right hand drive (rhd) Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured from February 1, 2007, through October 10, 2011. Some vehicles may be equipped with driver's airbag clockspring assemblies that could experience a compromised airbag circuit resulting in an airbag lamp illumination, which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. Consequences: a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver frontal airbag and will not be able to properly protect the driver in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injuries. Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners and remedy the vehicles as necessary free of charge. Chrysler will mail to owners an interim notification during March 2012. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Potential units affected: 5437.

2000 Jeep Wrangler. The wiring to the a/c control switch shorts out and causes a minor fire. The switch has been replaced and it happened again. There was evidence of a previous fix in spliced wiring. The wiring harness is no longer available. Research on Jeep related web sites has proven to me that this is not an isolated incidence and occurs in many of the surrounding model years. There is a design flaw in the three posts that connect to the selector switch, they are to close to each other.

This is one more consumer complaint regarding the heater/fan/blower wiring design failure for the 2001 model of the Jeep Wrangler. I understand that this continues to occur in other tj model years as well so I think it is a systemic design problem that if not corrected by the manufacturer will eventually cause a serious injury or death. My case is typical of the failures described by other 2001 Wrangler owners in that the heater blower fan switch began to drop speeds until only the highest speed was left operational [which I understand is how the underlying electronics specifically a resistor bank fail in this model]. Recently, this 4th speed has failed and I am not driving the vehicle until I can receive some assurance that the heater blower will not continue to heat up until it catches fire as has been reported in other instances. As I write this complaint, it is about 25 degrees outside, so driving my 2001 Wrangler without heat is not an option. I guess I am lucky that (a) it failed completely in cold weather forcing me to (b) research the issue learning that (c) this obvious vehicle defect can result in the Wrangler catching fire which has forced me to (d) go without the use of the Wrangler until a factory designed and sponsored fix is engineered and installed. So, in summary, 2001 Wrangler failed heater/fan/blower switch many other cases for this model year and surrounding model years has a history of causing vehicle fires this needs to be a factory sponsored re-engineer and recall, and needs to be done now before a fire situation causes a serious accident or injury or death !.

Have had ongoing electrical issues beginning in August, 2010. Check engine lights that have been proven inaccurate. Have replaced fan motor resistor x 2, electrical control unit x1, fan blower x1. Wiring is melted (burnt) at locations indicating fuse system/ wiring harness is not functioning properly.

A while ago I had the climate controls go out in my 1999 Jeep Wrangler. Upon investigation, I found that the wiring harness connector and the climate controls had melted due to the heat generated from the electrical connection. I replaced the climate controls in my Jeep, however, the electrical wiring still gets very hot. I did some checking in Jeep forums and apparently, this is a common occurrence in the "tj" Jeep model. I am enclosing a link to an article that addresses this issue, in it the authors determined that the uncorrected wiring can reach 122 degrees. . Read more...
After removing the rear-mounted spare tire on my 2009 Jeep Wrangler unlimited rubicon (4 door, 4wd) I noticed that the outer insulation (conduit) protecting the wiring harness for the third brake light had rubbed against the hard plastic grommet where the wiring harness exits the rear (outside) panel of the tailgate. The insulation had rubbed down to the point that the inner wires and their insulation were showing. This is a safety defect since, if not addressed, the rubbing would eventually go through the insulation on the wires, causing a short in close proximity to the spare tire. I reported my findings to Jeep customer service and also took the vehicle to my local dealer. The dealer replaced the oem grommet with a rubber piece, and then ordered and installed a new wiring harness.

Hvac wiring harness and switch melted due to faulty blower motor compounded by inadequate size wire. Chrysler does not even sell a repair kit even though there are new cases constantly on the Wrangler tj on intranet forums. Some are even vehicle catching fire.
Instrument cluster goes out - speedometer and tach, or all other gauges go out, airbag light comes on. Appears to be many documented cases of this same failure with the wiring harness/instrument cluster problem since 1998. Numerous service bulletins but no recalls! what can be done to prevent the problem and is there a recall for this?.
Since I have owned my 99 Wrangler, about every two years. The fan motor or selector switches have burned out. The last time it happened it meted down the wiring harness as well. It is my feeling that this is a serious problem that Jeep is aware of. Since they have a special bulletin that allows you to buy the switches individually, instead of the entire heating cooling head unit.
2007 Wrangler jk electronic throttle control warning illuminates followed by power loss while driving including complete engine shut-down in traffic. Dealer replaced electronic throttle control. . . Problem came back - dealer #2 now replacing e. T. C. Wiring harness. According to bloggers problem is common and widespread. Also learned Chrysler had a July 2007 recall of 80,000 vehicles which I was never informed of or recalled. I'm afraid on the highway at 55mph the engine will shut down and I will be hit from behind by an 18-wheeler. I live near and drive on I-95 just outside nyc, one of the heaviest traffic areas in the USA. I need help/resolution!!!.

June 22, 2007 wa s the first incident. The newly purchased 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited was stopped at an intersection. The engine spontaneously shut off. My wife had to turn the key to the off position, then restart the engine. I immediately scheduled a service appointment at the car dealer. The service representative said that the Chrysler technician determine d the problem to be the fuel injection wiring harness. It was replaced. On July 7, 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited shut off again, while driving at approximately 75 mph on the freeway. This was a 100 degree day. I pulled to the side of the road, stopped the vehicle and restarted the engine.
Wiring overheating and melting blower motor fan switch at 36,500 miles. Wiring overheating and melting multifunction switch for turn signals, headlamps, hazards, etc. . . At 37,800 miles. Unknown cause for either failure. Replaced blower motor control switch assembly after failure myself as it was only $25 usd and 10 minutes time. Now the multifunction switch is doing the same - melting and causing headlamps to fail. Is there a voltage control problem with the electrical systems to cause these failures? will the replaced parts fail again? will a fire result the next time? updated 02-01-08 updated 02/01/08.
I was driving at about 35 mph, and I begin to decrease speed since I was arriving at a light. The car went off for 1 second. Radio/engine went off and the car restarted itself all the lights came on, etc. This was the second time it happend. First at about 2500 miles. This second one at 8529.
: the contact stated while driving 65 mph smoke erupted from the steering column. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined the wiring harness needed to be replaced.
I have had the vehicle for 5 months. Appr 4 weeks ago my automatic shifter was stuck in park. After a total of 4 days at the dealership they replaced the entire shifter assembly. 2 weeks later the vehicle died on the side of the road stranding my family 130 miles from home. It was decided by the dealership that there was a blown fuse caused by an electrical short of some kind. After an entire week at the dealership they replaced the main computer and some misc. Wiring (all warranty work). The day after I got the vehicle back it died again, this time stranding my family 90 miles from home. The dealership says that there's still a short causing the fuse to blow. After another week at the dealership they replace a wiring harness that they say is bad. Again it is covered under warranty. The day that I drive home with the vehicle my brakes go out. The vehicle was towed back to the dealership for repairs to the braking system. While it was at the dealership for repairs the fuse blows again. This time they say that another wiring harness is bad and that this time they will not warranty it. I fail to see how they could perform warranty work to solve this problem twice and then decide that they will no longer warranty it.

1999 Jeep sahara: pril 2002 - gauges (all dashboard guages including speedometer) stop working while driving. Replaced wiring cluster connector at haynes Jeep, richmond, va. ; paid $108. 33 for repairs. October 2004 - gauges (all dashboard guages including speedometer) stop working again while driving. Same problem. Haynes Jeep advised have to replace the wiring cluster connector again. Asked haynes Jeep to replace it for free as this was done in 2002 by them. They refused. October 21, 2004 - wrote a letter of complaint to mr. Richard carter, general manager, haynes Jeep. He did not respond to the letter. This is a hazard while driving. This should never happen while driving in any vehicle, much less happen again within 2 years of getting it fixed. I understand this is a problem with Jeeps and there should be an investigation by the NHTSA. I do not think that the owner of a vehicle must fork out $100+ every two years just to have the guages work on a $23,000 vehicle!.
Instrument panel gauges and lights go off intermittently when using turn signal. Blower power failed altogether (mechanic found burned out wiring harness under dashboard. ) air conditioner failed --evaporator and compressor. Water leaks on passenger side from front windshield (windshield was replaced twice at dealer but failed to fix problem. ) rear center break light wire failed. Hood latch broke off.
A/c heater blower wiring causes fire at center of dashboard. When a/c or heater is placed in high blower switchs are selector wiring over loads and causes burning. This is not an isolated case. Noted at salvage auctions many 2000 and up Jeep Wranglers catch fire in this area and burn complete. Hard to figure after fire what has happen. Im sure insurance companys would be interested in this defect. Do not know how many injurys, but im sure there has been some. I have diconnected the high position wire so that overload would not accure till I could figure a fix or Jeep will admit to a problem and a fix.
Vehicle burned down to the frame. While driving the wheel column started to smoke.
The check engine light keeps coming on. I have returned it for service 4 times, and need to bring it back in again. First they said it was a solenoid. Then they traced all of the wiring. The time after that they replaced the module. Next they replaced all of the spark plugs (recall service). They replaced the spark plugs 2-3 weeks ago, and the check engine light is already back on. The dealership's service has been good, but they nor Chrysler seem to know why this is occurring.
The vehicle's instrument panel malfunctioned. The left and right side instrument panel wiring ground attachment screws became loose.
The wiring cluster connector shorted out at various times.
Passenger side air bag control module malfunctions, all gauges on the instrument cluster can not be read properly, vehicle has been to the dealer but problem still unresolved, consumer states he has fixed the problem by taking out the instrument cluster and spraying battery cleaner on back where connectors are behind instrument panel, consumer states the wires have problems with corrosion.

Airbag light intermittently is illuminated on dash, causing all gauges to return to zero while driving. Dealer has been contacted. Dealer can not duplicate problem, they say the fix a ground wire, however the problem never is corrected, this usually happens when starting up and usually lasts about 10-45 seconds.
