1 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/31/2024

Since January 2024 I have had to replace the spark plugs more than 3 times. It has also had to have an oil change done at least every two months regardless of the miles that were put in it. Burning oil like crazy mid October 2024 a full tune up was done as well as oil change and less than two weeks later it started bucking like a bronco and all oil was gone out of it. Check engine light is on and oil light goes on and off. Cannot drive at all.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2018 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 01/03/2022

2018 kia Optima ex a/t. My wife drive this car to work every day, 45-50 mile round trip for the past couple years. We have noticed that oil consumption is starting to become a problem. Im unsure the exact amount it goes through but it seems to be almost 3-4 quarts between oil changes. Every now and then it would randomly be a quart low, but no leaks, no noticeable smoking, no check engine lights. My wife has had a few times where the car would randomly loose acceleration nad slow way down. The car would come back up to acceleration after pulling over to the shoulder of the freeway when it happens. Im wondering if it might be related to the oil consumption, but not sure. It has the recal for the knock sensor update which we are waiting for Feb 28th, thats the time the dealer can get the car in for it. Our closest dealer is 150 miles from home. We have owned it since new and this is the only problem we've had with it. I hope we can get this resolved. No new car should go through this much oil at almost $6 a quart or more.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 05/13/2021

Vehicle is burning oil very fast and reving up uncontrollably. Was informed last summer of a recall on engine. Toon vehicle to kia and they confirmed the vehicle engine was burning oil way too fast. Vehicle was burning oil almost completely empty in only 1,000 miles. When I finally took the vehicle back to have kia uphold the recall I was told that they updated the recall 2 days before my appointment and they would no longer fix my engine despite discovering that there was an extreme oil consumption malfunction. Have talked to many people and was told by kia to contact the better business bureau if I was not happy with their decision. Have been in contact with multiple people since last summer and keep being told that they would get back to us soon. Received a call today saying that I could pay to get a new engine and then when they finally make the recall they would pay me back if they could prove that I needed a new engine because of kia.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 05/11/2021

My 2016 kia Optima is using a quart of oil every 1000 miles. The dealership service department did a oil consumption test and confirmed the car was using that much oil and it was normal oil use according to kia. I told them I didn't agree that it was normal and the service department man agreed it was a lot of oil to use but said he had to go by kia's guidelines and I could file a complaint on the kia website. I filed a complaint with kia and was contacted 3 weeks later and told the same thing that 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles was within kia specifications. The car is still under the 100,000 miles extension warranty and the dealership has done all oil changes.

My kia is using and losing oil rapidly. As in in-between oil changes. There are no leaks and it is not burning oil. My engine has seized up twice, while driving on the interstate, because its rapidly using that much oil. My mechanic says he's worked on several kia's with this similar problem. Where is my oil going? after calling 5 kia dealerships today, none of them can get me in for at least 45 days because they are so backed up with fixing all the recalls.

10 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2018 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 03/02/2021

I originally leased my 2018 Optima with 98 miles on it and bought it out at the end of my lease this was my second Optima, I also had 2 Hyundai sonatas. Since I'm in sales I had the added mileage on it. At 98,000 miles the engine started ticking. I originally had a 2013 Hyundai sonata that when it hit 105,000 started ticking only to find that it was burning oil (1. 5 quarts a week) so I was hesitant about another kia but the dealer assured me that kia had been aware of the problem and that they had fixed it. Guess what?! it hasn't. I took my vehicle in every 1,000 miles for oil change and have the documents showing how much oil was being burned off. According to kia corporate there is nothing wrong even though my vehicle requires a quart of oil every 1,000 miles and was under owners warranty. Never again. People watch your vehicles. This is a know problem with kia and Hyundai and they do not honor their warranties.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 12/23/2020

Mid September, 2020, I began to notice that my headlights would turn off as I was driving. They would cut off for no more than 15 seconds and turn back on. I didn't think anything of it, until I started having issues with other components of my 2016 kia Optima. On 11/30/2020 I was driving at 30mph through a residential area. As I was approaching a stop sign, my engine light came on. When I tried to accelerate, the car began to jump and hesitate. No matter how far down I pushed the gas, the care was jumping/shaking and wold not accelerate over 20mph. I pulled into an autozone where they ran a diagnostic test on the vehicle. Error code p1326 (knock sensor) came up. The next morning, I called coastal kia of wilmington in north carolina and explained to them what had happened. They sent an employee to pick up my vehicle (12/01/2020). They inspected my vehicle and informed me that the protocol was to perform a bearing clearance test and ecu upgrade. I picked up my car on 12/02/2020. A week later, I called the dealership again and informed them that although my engine light had not come back on, the acceleration issue was still occurring. I asked if they would look at the car again, to which they said no, that they cannot take a further look at it until the engine light came back on. On 12/20/2020 I was driving 40mph when my car began to stutter uncontrollably. The following morning I called kia again to inform them what had happened, and they agreed to take a look at it. On 12/22/2020 they called me and said that my car was burning oil and smoking excessively. They opened a tech case with kia and informed me that they could not do anything to the car until they heard back from them. On 12/23/2020 they called me again to tell me that the issue was not covered under a recall, and that my next step would be to replace my engine.

16 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/17/2020

Three times- today 10/18/2020 my car is not leaking oil but burning oil. Dangerously low I have to keep checking. No oil on the ground. I smell or a light to service oil comes on. First time 6/10/2020 - 2nd time 10/1/2020 today 10/18/2020 there is still oil but very low, 2qts were put in on 10/1/2020 . The engine is burning oil. I have new spark plugs maybe less than a year.

17 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 08/08/2020

Even though kia suggests oil change intervals of 7500 I've been getting mine changed every 3000 miles. I still had 100 miles to go and I noticed my car was running a little rough and their was a change in its performance. I checked my engine oil as a precaution and the dip stick barely showed any oil on the tip. This problem started after I took my kia in for a recall, they updated some sort of software and a some hose that was recalled for deterioration. There are no leaks, never had any and now my car is burning 4 quarts of oil between oil change intervals of jus 3000. I've seen many complaints on forums by owners who are having the same issue. .

18 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 02/29/2020

Heard about recall on news for 2013 kia Optima on Saturday, 2. 29. 2020. For engine fires. Dealerships were already closed. Called rick case kia first thing this morning, 3. 1. 2020. Larry in the service department was very rude and said he wasn't sure what I was talking about, they do not know of any recalls. Very dismissive. I'm not quite sure how kia keeps getting away with these types of things. You want me to keep my family in a death trap? gtfoh. This is the 4th or 5th major recall on my car. One of the other major recalls was for metal shavings in the oil. After bulldog kia, they were great, replaced the entire engine, my car started eating oil like crazy. I switched to high mileage, full synthetic, 5w30 instead of 5w20, oil thinking it would help since it has so many miles on it. It didn't. You're supposed to get 5k miles with full synthetic before another oil change, my car is completely out of oil within 2k miles. So I'm adding oil myself between oil changes. When contacting rick case kia, I was told "just let it blow up because we do not cover oil consumption". To me, this is absolutely absurd. I've spent money on this car. This is my family's car, this is how I get to and from work to be able to pay for this damn car. . . . And I get told to let it blow up.

19 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 02/19/2020

Steering sticks and you have to forcefully pull the steering wheel in the other direction to unstick it. Oil is burning with no oil leaks, no leaks in other fluids, no explanation as to where it is going but it is burning through a quart of oil every 7 days.

20 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 02/01/2020

21 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 02/01/2020

Engine puts off a burning oil smell and seems to need oil added in between it's 3,000 mile oil change. It happens at all times of car running, either stopped or moving. Have heard about engine failures and cars burning with this make, model, and year.

22 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 11/27/2019

Oil consumption issues: I got an oil change on 11/27/19 I explained that I had to put oil in it several times in between oil changes. The person at kia told me to come back in 1000 for them to check it (not to add oil) I checked it the morning 12/8/19 at 900 miles - it was under the low mark and I was 2 hour away from home. I took it back to kia on Monday evening 12/9/19 almost 1200 miles from the last oil change. ). Person at kia staid I was down 2 liters (very little oil on the end of the dip stick . The oil light did not come on, but it did flicker a few light on my 2 hour drive home ) kia advised I'm over my 100,000 miles and that's not part of the engine recall. I went home, checked the internet and there tens of thousands of blog about oil consumption. 1 day ago there was a new story, where kia denied a person claim after the engine seized. An inspection found a hole in the engine block. The mechanic wrote in a report that it was most likely caused by a lack of lubrication; therefore kia did not pay. Kia is aware of the oil consumption issues. My local dealership received hundred's of complaints but I was told there is no recall for that issue. If you get it checked it'll read for a different issue other that the current engine recall; it will miss up your chances of getting a new engine when it seizes up. ) I don't feel like I'm safe in this vehicle and kia's still playing russian roulette with our lives.

23 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/29/2019

"half" of the engine was replaced in July 2019. Now burns oil like crazy. On October 29th 2019 while driving at about 40 mph the entire electrical system shut off leaving me with no power steering. I was able to get off the road safely and call for a tow. I am second owner so warranty is out by about 2,600 miles. Dealer had I for a week at one point they said it was fixed when they were pulling it around front for me it stopped.

24 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/09/2019

After several trips to my dealership about engine problems, from engine smoke, loss of power, engine knocking, chugging when I'm driving as if it were going to stall. They turned me down so I've had no other option than to deal with it . Now my car is burning oil, about a quart a week. It constantly smells of burning oil and the chugging when driving the car has gotten way worse to where it feels like my car is about to completely stall and shut off. I could drive it 5 minutes or for an hour and it acts the same. I do not feel safe even driving this car anymore. Please do something about this.

25 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/02/2019

There are two (2) issues that are possibly connected. The first is excessive oil consumption. The kia dealership confirms that I am using approximately 1 quart per 250 miles, but they state that they cannot do anything for the issue. Additionally, the car has also become sluggish. Acceleration time has been greatly increased and car hesitates when the gas pedal is depressed. Both of these issues have me concerned for my safety in normal driving conditions and also when I need to accelerate quickly.

26 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 09/12/2019

Burning oil, engine went into limp mode in traffic, car won't run.

27 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

Last month, I took my car in for a check engine light. The repair shop told me that there was no oil in my engine and it was bone dry. This was the reason for my check engine light. They said they do know why but it was possible that the last time I received an oil change they put in the wrong oil. They assured me and I made sure they put in the correct oil and the check engine light turned off. A month later I was on the highway and the engine jerked and it went down to 40. The car did not want to accelerate and was struggling. I checked it in there was no oil in the engine again. Being that I had no oil stains on my driveway I was convinced that it was not leaking and the oil was burning out.

28 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 07/12/2019

I was entering a highway, accelerating to get up to the speed of the traffic on the highway. I noticed the car wasn't accelerating like normal and a short distance after entering the highway, my engine failed. The battery and oil pressure lights came on and then the check engine light. I pulled over to the shoulder and tried starting my car. It would start, but would die again every time I got to about 20 mph. I got it into a garage, where they looked at it the next day and couldn't find anything wrong with it. I continued to drive it but the next day, the oil pressure light flickered a couple of times as I was driving. I checked the oil level and it was nearly empty. I looked to see how many miles it had been since my last oil change and it was about 1,500 miles. In all the times I've had my oil changed, no one has ever told me the oil was low. There were no oil drips on my garage floor. It seems to be burning the oil in the engine. When I added 3 quarts of oil, steam was coming out of the opening even though I only drove approximately 1 mile.

29 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

31 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

At approximately 97,000 miles, my car began to burn an excessive amount of engine oil. Being that my car had a warranty up to 100k miles, I immediately reported the issue to kia. They continuously reported that they would need to evaluate the oil consumption at 1,000 mile increments. I reported my concerns in regards to the process possibly extending beyond the 100k mile limits of my warranty. I was informed that the engine recall would be an option if I exceeded 100k miles. Upon exceeding 100k miles, kia reported that the oil consumption was the product of "cheap oil" and kia would not be responsible for the excessive oil burn. After verifying that my most recent oil changes were performed by kia, I was told that excessive oil consumption was no longer a provision of the recall.

32 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 03/21/2019

On March 21, 2019, I brought my car in to the kia dealership because my own personal mechanic said that the engine was burning too much oil. Kia dealership did an oil test and said that they need to fix my engine due to a recall. It has been over 2 months and I still have not receive my car yet. Made multiple calls to the kia dealership and kia corporate and nothing was resolved.

Car seems like is burning oil and also oil level is going down pretty quickly.

34 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 03/05/2019

Driving the vehicle no warning signs or lights. Engine shuts off. Take to a mechanic the motor needs replaced. Replace the motor. Drive the car for 1 month motor needs replaced again. Both times like was empty when routine oil changes were done at 3,000 miles. A car does not burn oil over a 30 day period causing engine failure. A faulty product does. Kia should recall the engines in this year as well. The problem obviously is extended past 2014.

35 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

My 2013 kia Optima sx burns excessive oil and produces excessive exhaust smoke. The dealership originally told me I had a faulty exhaust control valve. After I replaced that valve, however, the problem(s) persisted. At my last service visit, the dealership simply topped-off the oil to get the engine malfunction and check oil warning lights to go off. Upon leaving the dealership, I soon discovered that the excessive exhaust smoke remained. The only time the excessive exhaust smoke dissipates is when most or all of the oil has burned off. (the service advisor at a second dealership simply told me they couldn't diagnose or fix the problem. ).
