Failure Date: 04/20/2021

I was driving home from work and I noticed my vehicle having a hard time picking up speed and soon after it was a noticeable knocking noise coming from the engine. The rpm and dashboard gauges were very sporadic. I parked the car and popped the hood to find that there was somehow absolutely no oil, but no current sign of leaking from underneath. The car continues to knock when I start it up and am afraid of it overheating and it is currently parked. It smells definitely like burntness and when shifting into d3 and d it seems to be the most apparent that the engine could be having touble. Speeds and rpm gauge are most sporadic at high speeds and the exhaust pipe seems to have residue of some sort that isn't normal.

While driving on the turnpike the car completely shut off. Prior to shutting off, the battery, oil and transmission icon appeared on the dashboard. Thankfully I was able to merge over into the side lane safely because the breaks along with the steering suddenly became difficult to control. After placing the car into park and removing the keys from the ignition, I attempted to restart it. It started, so I continued heading home. Approximately driving another 12 miles, the same thing happened again. The only difference this time was upon restarting it, a weird knocking noise came from underneath the hood, so I shut the car off. I waited about 5 minutes to restart it and it started right up, so I continued heading home. Today, once again while driving, the car shut off. Same knocking, and dashboard lights. After waiting about 5 minutes, I restarted it, only to continuously hear a loud knocking noise and a vibration coming from under the hood. While accelerating, it barely moved and the noises became louder along with the vibration. This time the car was incapable of being driven. I had to get it towed directly to a kia dealership. Good thing my car was still covered with easy care or else I wouldn't have been to get it towed. I don't even know how I am going to be able to afford whatever needs repaired. One week after an oil change, I was (30 miles away from home) driving on a highway at a speed of approximately 55mph. I felt a vibration begin. I turned off the heater and turned off the stereo. Immediately I heard a horrific metallic banging noise coming from the engine area. There were no warning lights or cel illuminated. The engine stalled as I was traveling down the highway and I had to try to pull it safely to the edge of the road. I was about 20 feet away from the entrance to a business, so I tried to start the car to get it safely off the roadway. It tried to start, but made an extremely loud "ka-thunk" sound and then started smoking from under the hood. I turned off the flashers, called for a tow truck and a ride home. I had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic near my home and called for a ride for myself. Once I arrived home, I called kia consumer affairs and reported the incident. They provided a case number and stated that I would now need my car to be towed to a kia dealer for diagnosis. The kia dealer does not currently have a loaner vehicles, so I am waiting until Monday to have my car towed in hopes I can acquire a vehicle at that time until they are able to determine if kia is going to replace the engine. In the interim, my independent mechanic did a quick inspection and stated there are metal shavings in my oil and it appears as though my engine "blew a rod. " my VIN doesn't meet the recall criteria, but rather the pi1803 bulletin. 2013 kia Optima sxl; I'm the second owner. It's been babied, appropriate oil changes, 93k miles.

My emergency brake doesn't work and rolled while it was pulled up in neutral and hit my daughter as she was running around the front of the car to the passenger side right in her knee cap. I got my car back from weston and it didn't feel right. Someone put 380miles on my car it had a 1/2tank of gas and my clutch and clutch pedal and gear shift was way shorter and 1/4 inch off in shifter box. I was on the freeway driving 60 mph with my kids and we were leaving my parents house from xmas. All of a sudden I almost list control of the car my clutch pedal fell to the floor. I got us to safety almost avoiding a huge wreck and had it towed to my house. Called dealership and told them and had noticed on invoice their technicians had tightened up by bolts and flywheel. Well I go outside and theirs fluid all over the pavement under the car but none on inside. They paid for a tow truck and by the way since replacing the new engine I went from 34 miles to the gallon to 20 and passenger air bag still illuminated off. My defrost isnt working now and my engine light blinked 3xs. They want me to pay 1500 for new clutch. I was concerned with the work from firestone so I took my car. While driving the car on a busy intersection my car, a 2013 kia Optima just shut off completely after the starter was replaced. I initially thought it happened during the replacement of the starter but an adjuster came out and ruled the starter was brand new and had nothing to do with the engine. As I continue to read online reviews I see it can be a problem with the engines on kia. I have a loud knocking noise coming from the engine with metal flakes in the oil.

34 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 11/19/2019

As I was driving on the interstate 3 vehicles passed waving frantically before speeding by. I noticed a reflective orange flicker along the base each vehicle. This was followed up by a loud knocking sound before I lost all accelerating power but retained rpm revs as I pressed the pedal. I allowed the momentum to get me as far up the exit ramp as possible prior to pulling over onto the grass. I placed the car in park and turned it off to be met with an instant roll of smoke up the front windshield, out of the front grill, and from the passenger side tire area. I exited the vehicle to the sound of liquid hitting a hot surface and hissing. I stepped away from the vehicle and looked underneath to be met with rolls of fire dripping to the ground from beneath the engine and along the bottom center of the undercarriage of the car. I immediately cleared the area and my vehicle was complete engulfed in flames in less than 4 minutes. No sensors or alarms notified me of any type of malfunction.

35 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 11/15/2019

I was driving my car on the highway in rush hour traffic on 11/15/19 and had just accelerated up to about 60 mph when the car completely lost power in the middle of traffic. I was able to steer the vehicle to the side of the road without power steering or brakes because the engine had completely shut off. Once I got to the side of the road, I tried several times to start the car up again and the engine wouldn't do anything at all. The battery wasn't dead and I had plenty of fuel in the vehicle. I had my car towed to a kia dealership/service center. I searched my VIN # on this database and that's when I saw that a recall has been out since 2017 for my year/make/model, and the recall is for this exact problem with the engine. I didn't purchase the car until 2018 from a Hyundai dealership who did not mention or address the known issue/recall. Per the recall info, there is a known issue with the bearings due to a machining/manufacturing issue when the car was built. The engine light never came on and I did not notice a knocking sound prior to this engine failure. I am currently waiting to hear about what is going on with my car and when/if kia is going to fix the recall issue, and I am being charged for the diagnostics. The NHTSA recall # is 17v224, manufacturer recall # is sc147.
