36 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 12/31/2018

My engine starting burning oil and smoking. I literally had to get the oil changed every 2-3 days. When I took the car to kia, they informed me that some engines had been recalled but mine was covered under the recall. They wanted to charge me for a new engine which I eventually had to replace on my own because they would not take responsibility. I later learned several colleagues had the same issue with their engines and got it replaced.

37 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

I own a 2013 kia Optima. The first time I noticed the issue, I was driving on the interstate miles from home on a family trip. I noticed the oil light flickering when I depressed the accelerator, and also smelled something burning from engine compartment. I pulled off at the nearest service station and checked the oil and found no oil on the dipstick other than some burnt oil residue. The strong burning smell and smoke was coming from the opening. I immediately added oil and have been keeping a close eye on it ever since. I contacted the dealer and have learned of the many problems that kia owners are having with these particular engines. The dealership conducted a oil consumption test and determined the car is losing a little over a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so, but isn't leaking anywhere. I have read many of the stories of engine failures and fires caused by this and I do not want to experience this while on the road with my family. This car only had about 107,000 miles on it when I first noticed this oil consumption problem. This vehicle has been well maintained and should not be going through oil like this with so little miles on it. The dealership is telling me that there is no warranty that covers this and no recalls have been issued despite all of the trouble kia owners are having. I don't trust the car on the road with my family and I don't know where else to turn. Please help with this. Thank you!.

38 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/30/2018

Car burning through oil every 20 days to the point the oil is completely empty. Started a oil consumption test on October 1, 2018. Oil light came on by October 20, wpq8. I contacted dealership about oil light however they stated I must wait 30 days and do not top off car with oil. I decreased driving the next 10 days to prevent damage. I went back after over 1,000 miles and 30 days on October 30, 2018 to kia dealership in chamblee, GA. Was only given a oil change and additive. Car dealerships stated that this is how my car is and I will need to frequently do oil changes.

39 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/21/2018

My kia Optima began consuming large amounts of oil but it wasn't leaking out or burning off anywhere. I began to watch the oil levels closely and was down 2 qts every week. At some point the oil pressure got too low and we think sucked air into the engine. The check engine light came on and then off again as it has been for the ppast yr but for an evap problem - a very small leak kept getting detected. I spent $1800 at firestone the previous ur the colder kept coming back on and off. But this didn't explain the sidden massive oil consumption. Suddenly on oct. 21 my car suddenly idled very high without moving and the the check light came on again and stayed on. The engine began to knock loudly especially when accellerating or climbing hills. My mechanic friend told me one of the engine rods was damaged and the computer code check verified that the crankshaft timing oil control valve was not working properly. This would explain the low oil pressure and damage to the engine. I was able to find the problem on kia's website with many complaints regarding the same issue. Kia had a recall regarding this problem for many of their cars but of course not mine. I was very upset over it. I had gotten the car only 3 years prior and it only had 150k miles on it. I took really good care of it. Kia said they could do nothing. My only option was to junk the car and have to buy a new when I wasn't in a position to do so. Kia has disappointed me greatly. Because of this problem I may never but another kia. I was so excited about getting my kia as it had all the features I wanted in a car and at a very good price but it iis only good if it runs. This problem should have been included in thw recall for my car as it is a huge problem as I read complaint after complaint online from other kia Optima owners. The engine computer code that came up was po600011.

40 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 05/18/2018

I was driving in highway in July 2017. The steering wheel was drifting and slippery. It was about 84,000 miles in it. So, I brought my car in kia dealer. They showed me worn out steering coupling. I asked them to change steering coupling only but they changed whole steering wheel column and charged me $1,402. However, I found that kia extended warranty for 10 years/unlimited mileage in 2016. I am not sure why they charged me for steering issue. I complained Kia Motors America and sent all information that I have including the bills. They did not respond any letter yet. I like to have my money back. Another issue that I found in may 2018 was fast engine oil burn out. I was driving to work in highway and engine oil warning sign was blinking. So, I immediately pulled over and checked engine oil level. It was almost gone and so dark. The dealer just changed engine oil a few months ago and less than 3,000 miles driven after that. I filled up 3 quarts of blended engine oil and checked every other day. About two weeks later, it looks the level of engine oil was way lower (about 1 and half quarts were gone). I called the dealer that they said it was only engine oil burning issue not engine failure. They said it would not cover by recalls. I checked lots of complaining about engine failure issue from the internet. Based on that in many cases the engine oil burn out issue happened before engine failure. I strongly think that kia should install new engine under warranty or recalls because I really concern about me and family's safety.

42 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 08/18/2017

Problems starting a few years ago. Heard knocking, brought it in for recall, and it wasn't doing it anymore. Had problem with emissions. Recall was done and I was told that the problem led to engine problems. Now engine is burning through oil, and local trusted mechanic says it is going to need a new engine by winter. In research have seen others are having similar problems.

43 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 08/14/2017

44 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 07/19/2017

First I would like to say that up until now I loved my kia!!!! unfortunately beginning just before the car had 100,000 miles on it, the car began to burn oil. It is burning approximately 1 quart every 1000 miles. I took the car in to the dealer for the latest engine recall and while there I communicated with the dealership that the car has been burning oil at the rate of a quart every 1000 miles. The dealership changed my oil when checking it for the engine recall, afterwards they directed me to bring it back in at 1000 miles. The car is currently at the dealership now for this check. The car is at 900 miles and a quart low. I hope kia will do the right thing and fix this. I have read other peoples experiences with the engine failure and one of the common symptoms seems to be the car suddenly beginning to burn oil. I do not want to be on the interstate and suddenly have engine failure in and not be able to get my car out of the line of traffic.

46 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 03/13/2017

Kia replaced a blown engine in 2017 on recall. From the beginning I noticed it felt different. It goes through oil , but doesn't leak anywhere. When I take off after its sat for a while a big cloud of white smoke comes out the back of the car. I have taken it back to the dealer and they tested it and said it was ("burning oil in the combustion chamber") . The engine has less than 40000 miles on it. I am afraid to drive it because the first time the engine blew up, I almost caused a giant accident! now the car is not only dangerous but worthless as well. I have kept all documents on the car, oil changes, parts & repairs, recalls, etc.

50 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 10/05/2016

Driving home from the store last night and my car started sputtering and stalling, a cloud of white smoke came from my exhaust pipes. I parked it called my dad and he told me to check the oil. There was barely any oil on the dipstick even though I had just got my oil changed 10 days earlier. I had the company that changed my oil check it out. They told me it was something internally causing the oil to burn off therefore it was a manufacturers issue and it should be covered under warranty. I had it towed to the closest kia dealership and waiting to hear what their diagnosis is. My car only has 55,000 miles on it, I have only had it a little over a year and I bought it brand new.

51 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

The contact owns a 2014 kia Optima. While driving 60 mph, the engine oil indicator illuminated. The contact stated that the engine was burning oil extremely fast. The dealer diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced due to low maintenance of having the oil changed. The contact was informed that she needed to provide all documents of previous oil change maintenance. Due to not having the oil changes performed at a kia certified dealer, the contact was out of compliance with the warranty. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
