Kia Motor Optima owners have reported 71 problems related to engine failure (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor Optima based on all problems reported for the Optima.
I was driving on the highway when my engine completely failed. There was no warning or indication that a complete failure was going to occur. I had no propulsion and had to coast to the shoulder of the highway to avoid other vehicles. I owned the vehicle as the only owner (purchased vehicle brand new) for only three years when failure occurred. No one expects their vehicle to fail in a three year time period from date of purchase. The mileage at the time of failure was around 180,000 and past the warrenty. I drive for uber and purchased the vehicle to drive for uber. A new vehicle failing in a three year time span (from time of purchase) because the engine completely failed is unreasonable. Kia issued a software upgrade on my vehicle after my engine failed that addresses the exact type of failure that occurred to my vehicle (indicating that kia was aware that there were problems with their product.

There is an open engine recall currently, I scheduled an appointment for the recall for 10/9. On Friday of 10/5 I was driving down I-95 south and my car started to shake and the engine and oil light came on, I placed the car in neutral in the lane and I was able to place the car in neutral and role to the shoulder due to engine failure. I had it towed to the dealership Tuesday 10/9 to the laurel kia located at 14921 baltimore avenue laurel, MD. Jeremy was the service leader that I spoke with and he supposedly serviced my car. After getting my car serviced on 10/9 I had to immediately return the dealership again because I had engine failure again and my car stalled while driving home. I went back and jeremy said that nothing was wrong to let the car run then drive home. I made it home that day but on Wednesday 10/10 my care broke down due to engine failure again while driving on the highway, the car began to shake the engine stalled and the engine began knocking extremely loud. I almost got into a accident because of this. The car was towed on 10/11 back to the dealership so that the engine can get checked. I have gone to the laurel kia dealership three times to have this recall repaired and I am still unable to drive my car effectively and safely on the road due to the manufacturers error. And the dealership of service is unwilling to correct this recall error.

Takata inflators read on webiste;however, got in a wreck on 4/11/18 car totalled got hit in front end and no airbags deployed in the entire car, I hit steering wheel and had to go to the er. Also, in August of last year the car had internal engine failure and put new engine in my car. Had nothing but complaints on this car. I emailed kia on the air bags and no one has got back in touch with me.
2015 kia Optima. Drove out of my parking lot and my car just cut off after I turned the corner at 4:30 in the morning heading to work. Tried to start it again it started and cut right back off. Had it towed to the kia dealer in frederick. The dealer called me and said that my engine failed because it didn't have any oil in it and it had sludge and a crack in the engine. I was further told that I needed to bring all of my oil change receipts to prove I was getting my oil changed. My car is not even 3 years old. The warranty clearly states that you are covered 10years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first. Kia is not willing to honor their wairranty which is dead wrong. Got a call today stating that it was going to cost $7200 to fix my engine. Last time I checked I was not related to rockefeller. People just don't go around deliberately cracking engines. This car needs to be recalled. How was it recalled from 2011-2014 skipped 2015 and recalled again in 2016. I've been doing my homework with this situation and there have been 98 complaints about the 2015 kia Optima which 48 of them where about the engine and kia nor NHTSA had investigated any of them. That's because they do not want to fix there issues that they knew about prior to it happening. This is a true safety hazard and something must be done about it. It is not fair that we pay so much money for a car and then when something happens to it you can't even get it fixed. But I bet if it was one of those corporate peoples cars they would have no problem honoring the warranty or better yet giving them a new car.

Motor oil keeps disappearing; I change the oil on schedule and 2-3 weeks after it is dry. I'm afraid of engine failure or lock up due to this. Raising the hood does not show any oil splatter. Electrical problems; lnterior lights keep going out or go completely dim.

In November 2017 I continuously took my vehicle back and forth to the dealership due to my vehicle not started, and/or needing a jump. Jim marsh kia had me replace my battery after 6 weeks of complaints and complications. Only for a week later to have me and my kids life at risk, heading south bound on I-15 my car flashed a warning sign stating do not start engine hybrid battery undetected and shut off while a semi truck was behind us. By the grace of god I was going down hill so I swerved to the side of the dessert and road to spare our lives. Just to have kia tell me 4-5 different excuses as to why my engine failed.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Optima. While driving various speeds, the oil pressure and check engine warning indicators illuminated. The dealer was not called. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the oil needed to be refilled to avoid an engine failure. The failure recurred on a weekly basis. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
While driving the vehicle, the power cut off, - coasted to a complete stop. Engine does not turn over. Lights/radio etc all work, so not a battery issue. There is a recall for previous model years of this same vehicle specific to engine failture.
The contact owned a 2012 kia Optima. While driving 45 mph off of the interstate, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to pull the vehicle over into a parking lot. The vehicle was not able to restart. The contact left the vehicle overnight and had it towed to midas (6500 se 14th st, des moines iowa, 50320) the following day where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. Due to the $7,000 repair cost, the contact decided to sell the vehicle due to the value of the vehicle per the mileage and condition. The manufacturer was contacted in July of 2017 after finding out a month earlier that the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine), after the vehicle had already been sold. The failure mileage was 124,890. Parts distribution disconnect.
While traveling in a 65mph zone the vehicle stalled with out indication or dash lights. Vehicle lost steering and control, putting myself and others at risk of danger. Stopped the vehicle. While trying to start the vehicle, turned the key and all dash lights were present but the vehicle would not start, click or turn over. Issue resulted as an engine failure.
Engine fail locked up 82,000.

At approximately 118,000 miles, the connecting rod and engine failure happened while travelling approximately 35 mph on rhode island state route 114 in east providence, ri. The engine seized completely and I was able to coast the car to the side of the road where I then required a tow truck. Thankfully it was 1am and no cars on the road. Nobody was hurt. Bald hill kia in warwick, ri now has my car, but no eta on when it will be ready. They tell me that there are two other Optimas waiting for engines ahead of mine. This is 100% unacceptable. I spent $26,000 on this car in good faith and kia will not honor the warranty they extended on the engine in a timely fashion. While they have offered a loaner car for now, they will not provide in writing that the loaner will be of no cost to me. I am now stuck with the option of hope and wait that kia does the right thing, or take matters in to my own hands by contacting NHTSA and considering the purchase of a new vehicle.
The contact owns a 2015 kia Optima. While the vehicle was undergoing an oil change, the vehicle stalled and the oil indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Car was being driven on city street when smoke appeared out of the hood of the car. Car was driven to a safe spot in a residential neighborhood to assess the problem. Flashlight showed a large hole at the bottom of the engine. Car was towed to kia dealership and inspected. All oil change receipts were submitted as per dealership request. Dealership submitted claim to kia headquarters to see if engine would be covered, I. E. ,replaced. Next day engine replacement was approved at no cost to me. It has now been over a month, there are other kia cars at this dealership with the same problem and still no replacement engine. I spoke to kia customer service in so. California and was given a case number and the message that the engine is on back-order. No eta can be provided and apparently there is a backlog of cars with this catastrophic engine failure with no end in sight. Any assistance from your office would be greatly appreciated.
Car just stopeven thed while driving down street in town. Engine light came on as car died, no prior warning. Car had been serviced regularly with no problems detected. Kia technician at dealership stated that engine had seized. Blamed engine problem on improper maintenance even though I had proof of regular on schedule maintenance. Kia refused to honor warranty. When I looked up problem on computer found that there had been several complaints of this same problem and was attributed to faulty engine design causing metal shavings from bearings that clooged oil portscreating sludge and eventually engine failure. Kia representitives stated that they knew nothing of this problem and again denied to honor warranty in negotiations.
The contact owns a 2014 kia Optima. While driving approximately 60 mph, the engine shut down and the check engine indicator illuminated. A local dealer diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced due to sludge build up. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the engine failure was due to the owner's negligence. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 59,000.

On sept 24 2016 around 10 pm, driving home engine locks up, car turns off and I was unable to steer the car. Luckily I was heading around a wide turn and was able to slow the car down as it drifted off the road onto the edge of the road. Kia dealer diagnosed the engine failure with a hole in the block. Kia consumer support today sept 29, 2016 said they will not replace the engine. This problem seems to be pretty wide spread with many kia models as well as Hyundai models. There also seems to be a class action starting against kia for not follow suite with Hyundai when Hyundai make owners aware. Same engine from same plant. Going to keep calling kia support until I get some help. I have not received any notice from kia about a recall or service notice as other have made note of receiving.
While driving approximately 65 mph on a highway, the engine shut down without warning. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road but would not restart. It was towed to a mechanic who diagnosed a catastrophic engine failure. The shop maintained that the engine seized due to apparent improper oil change. The vehicle was purchased less than 30 days prior to the event. The vehicle was subsequently towed to a kia dealership where they, too, were unable to manually turn the engine over. Kia service center removed the valve cover and found heavy sludge built up in engine causing it to fail and lock up. Kia motors of America denied claim due to lack of proper maintenance. However, Hyundai sonata engines were recalled due to metallic debris in engine which restricted oil flow and presented the same manifestations of engine sludge. Kia Optima sedans were built using engines manufactured at the plant cited in the Hyundai recall.
Engine failed suddenly while operating at highway speed.
Car stalling when accelerating from a stopped position making turns. This is very dangerous to public safety and could cause major collisions. My car did it a few times before engine began knocking and had towed. The kia dealership service department said it was a connector rod bearing defect and ultimately caused total engine failure. Kia is putting the burden on the consumers to prove the defect wasn't caused by poor maintenance even though they have extended warranty to dealerships. This problem will not go away until kia repairs the defect in the engine and human life will be at stake.
Engine failure with my new 2015 kia Optima at 42,000 miles. Kia denied warranty coverage due to not being able to prove all oil changes. Kia also denied knowing there was an engine defect on this 2. 4l gdi engine. Today I see an engine recall finally from kia, however they stopped premature at the 2014 model. I had to pay for a new engine to be installed out of my own pocket on a brand new vehicle.
March 2016 while traveling on highway at 65 mph and passing a slow moving vehicle car lost power, became difficult to steer and unresponsive. We were lucky that we were right by rest area and coasted safely. Inspected the vehicle while and noticed a smell reminding an electrical short/fire. Car was towed to kia dealer and diagnosed to be engine failure. The engine was inspected and per dealer it was pristine, kia decided to cover under warranty @ approx 98k miles. Dealer stated that per kia it was due possibly to non oem oil filter (nice). When we got the car back it did not want to start occasionally, where it hesitated especially as temperatures increased. Noticed dealer, dealer took it in verified battery and starter were to spec. In June on a hot day car almost did not start, set an appointment with dealer for later in the week. Next day car did not start, was towed to dealer and diagnosed to week starter. Starter was replaced and car started on for one day, the second day temperatures increased and car was dead with similar electrical meltdown, also noticed fog lights were not working after bulb replacement. Dealer diagnosed with kia to bad engine again due to tolerances causing friction and more heat. Spoke to kia and started a case but they just want to replace the engine again and not discuss potential issues with electrical harness compromise and ongoing issue with engine failing for no reason. This car is scarry and hope it does not start on fire when the third engine fails.
While driving home one day in December 2015, each time I approached a stop light, yield sign or slowed to a low speed (less than 15 mph), my vehicle would shut-off multiple times. My in motion speed was approx 45 mph when not approaching a stop light or yield sign. It happened both when I was turning and going straight on main roads with 2-4 lanes. The dealership and another asme certified mechanic both state engine failure, which seems to be a widespread problem with 2. 4l engines manufactured by kia and Hyundai around this year up to 2015.

Metal debris in engine oil, scorch engine- same engine problem as parent CO. Hyundai motor recall. On sonata. A 2. 4 liter engine. , manufactured before April 2012. Engine needs to be replaced. Engine failed on freeway during normal use.
I leased the kia Optima (2013) for 3 years. With 4 months left on the lease & 35,000 miles later, everything was perfect, no issues whatsoever, up until yesterday morning while driving to work. I was approaching a 4-way stop when I heard what sounded like the screech or a short blast of a hairdryer. Directly after 'the sound' I approached the stop sign, but even as I was slowing I felt that the car was sluggish. I came to a stop. When I tried to go again I realized the engine had stopped. I tried a few times to start the engine but it was completely dead. I had to go to work, so I called a friend who is a mechanic to come look at the car. He said he would take the battery to pep boys to have it checked, which he did, they said the battery was good. He advised me to call the car pros kia of carson where I leased the car from as it was covered under the "100,000 mile/10 year warranty". When I got to the service department they told me they needed to do a diagnostic which would cost $119 and would "probably be covered by the warranty but you need to sign this form just in case it's not" of course, when they came back, they said I was not coverered under their warrenty because the engine was "bad' and had completely blown due to "black sludge'' in the oil compartment (this is a complete lie as my mechanic friend checked the oil that morning and it was good!!!) and they needed receipts for all of the services to my car going back one year as they needed to know who had been tampering with my car! for the record, I have all of the receipts from pep-boys and my mechanic who have done all of my oil changes religiously. Now I come to find out via research on the internet that there are law suits happening between consumers who are being blamed for not doing oil changes and causing chronic engine failure because kia don't want to honor their warrenty!!!!.
The evening of 8/12/15 I was driving down a 4 lane city road, 2 lanes each direction. The engine completely shut off leaving me with no power and in a very dangerous situation with sudden deceleration and vehicles coming up from behind. Fortunately, no one hit me and I was able to move the car out of traffic. No engine maintenance/warning lights came on prior to the engine failure. We have been informed the engine is locked up and will need completely replace with a new engine. Routine maintenance, including kia's 22,500 mile recommended maintenance was performed only 16 days prior on 7/27/15. Dave green, kia arapahoe service manager, informed today (8/17/15) that they have seen several instances of this in the past week. They believe there is a connection to the hot weather. What ever the cause this has a very high potential to cause death or extreme injury.
Tl- the contact owns a 2011 kia Optima. The contact stated that while traveling at approximately 50 mph attempting to slow down for a stop light, the vehicle stalled with no warning and the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the starter burned out and that the engine seized. The dealer replaced the starter and was not able to diagnose the source of the failure. It was stated to the contact that a more extensive diagnosis was required and the engine needed to be taken apart. The engine failure was not repaired by the dealer. The vehicle was not able to be driven. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Pam.

2012 kia Optima sx. Consumer writes in regards to engine failure. The consumer stated the vehicle filled with smoke and the dashboard set on fire. The vehicle was a total loss.
My 2011 kia Optima has gone through 2 engines without any indication of a problem. Both time I was driving and the car stopped. I change my oil every 5000 miles. No lights came on before the engine failed, that lead me to believe there was a problem. I will be submitting a complaint to the kia organization shortly.
