I was driving with my child in the car out of town, when they wheels locked up and the engine made a horrible sound and died. I had to walk to a car rental place to rent. Car. I had my car towed to a local repair shop. I got home and the next day the mechanic called and said I would need a new engine that it blew a head gasket valve. He recommended contacting kia as there have been recalls on this car for this problem. I immediately contacted kia and they said there was a recall on my car and they would pay to have it towed to a local kia dealership. It is still a good two hours from where I live. But they assured me if would be covered as the issue it with head gaskets. It is recal number 2002b. The dealership contacted me and said it isn't covered. I asked why and the service advisor, justin stated the recall had nothing to do with it. No told him what kia headquarters told me. He stated he would print off the recall and speak with his manager and get back with me. The car has 124,000 miles on it. I have done strick maintenance. As a matter of fact I just had the oil changed. My biggest concern is the safety of myself and my daughter when the wheels locked up. Had I need on the interstate I don't know how we would have avoided an accident. Luckily I had taken back roads home and was entering a small town of winder and was only doing 25 miles an hour at the time. No warning lights were on at all. After the engine failed the oil pan light came on and was intermittently going on and off.

November 25th on my way to work I started hearing a rattle while driving on hwy 30. About a mile from my house. The noise didn't seam to be present while rpm was under 3,000rpm so I decided to be cautious of rpm and not push my car too much that morning. As I pulled into the parking lot the engine stopped, and the oil light flickered. I started the car and parked it. After work the car started fine but as I pulled into the road I heard the rattle again so I went to the nearest place I could to buy oil. Before checking I purchased a quart and found out I had enough oil in the car. The rattle was still present so I purchased oil, filter and decided no harm would come from refreshing the oil in the car. I kept my rpm under 3,000 on my way home and experienced some sudden speed shifts while using cruise control, but kept a slow and steady pace. At the top of a hill near my home the engine made some louder noises and stopped that is the first time the check engine light came on. I bumped the car into neutral and costed into my driveway. I later towed my car to it's parking spot, not wanting to make a potential issues worse. After consulting with a mechanic, he. Suggested an oil change may be the first action to fix the issues. I changed the oil in place and recorded my attempts to start the vehicle after. Mechanic consultant said the first attempt after oil change sounded like a knock that he did not think would be a long term issue. But the second attempt started into a lower rod knock and advised to not attempt to start the car again until it's in a shop with proper diagnostic equipment.
On September 24, 2020, I was driving on the freeway going home when my kia Soul started making a loud noise coming from the engine no lights came on and no warning. The vehicle lost power and I had pull on the shoulder of the freeway and had to towed it home. The next day, I towed it to kia car pros it's been there since. After two weeks, I was advised that it has a blown engine. These vehicles have a recall that cause the engine to blow up. I have requested for a diagnostic report as of today they have not provided me with one. Your assistance to this urgent matter is greatly appreciated. Michael naranjo.
Car began losing power while driving (using cruise control) on busy highway (city, 4 lanes of traffic; 8/23/2020). Driver immediately stopped driving car and tried to find safe location to stop. Car started making loud noises from engine. Car was towed to kia dealership (8/24/2020). Kia employee reported hearing the noise upon starting the car, and stated he knew immediately that a rod malfunctioned and oil leaked into engine. Kia did not do further inspection. Engine/car is totaled and cannot be driven. Kia quoted $7,400 repair. Said this was caused by lack of oil change from owner. Car has regular oil changes with paperwork to confirm user maintenance. Kia Souls with 1. 6l engine have a recall for the same issue. Car's last oil change was approximately 2500 miles ago.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 kia Soul while driving a loud noise had occurred smoke and exhaust fumes were present the owner was concern the vehicle would stall. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph a loud sound was heard coming from under the vehicle before smoke and exhaust fumes were present inside the cabin. The vehicle was driven to the home and parked. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer roper kia (320 hodgon rd, joplin mo) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA recall campaign number: 17v120000 (engine, engine cooling). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 83,000.
Driving down the highway and vehicle engine started to lose power and make a loud noise. Was able to pull over before it stopped. Had it towed to a shop and the mechanic said engine failure with metal shavings in the oil. Oil had been changed approximately 6 weeks prior to failure.
I got in my car and left work. As soon as I started to drive it was making a horrible noise. I immediately drove it to the local mechanic which is in close proximity to my work. It was diagnosed by both that shop, and a kia dealership shop as having "connecting rod knock. " I was advised not to drive it because it is unsafe. It is at risk of either a sudden stall, which could cause a crash or, a rod may be thrown out the side of the block, puncturing engine oil causing a fire. In addition, the repair is essentially a new engine, which costs over 10k. I have repeatedly sought remedy via kia corporation to no avail. Kia has refused to fix this dangerous car despite there being a recall on this exact issue on the 2014 kia Soul but, the loophole they are sticking with is that mine has the bigger engine. I've had this car about a year and a half, driven it just over 5,000 miles, have done regular oil changes and only done small town, light driving. The car has just over 64,347 miles on it. There has been media coverage about this exact issue that states kia has many more faulty vehicles that need recall status, Souls being mentioned. . Read more...

This is an update to what I previously reported. There is currently only a recall for the base model of the kia Soul but this is affecting the + and ! models of this vehicle as well and 19v120000 recall definitely needs to be extended to cover all engines in all models of this vehicle, the 2. 0l gdi. As previously mentioned in my prior complaint, my vehicle was well maintained and while driving my car made a loud noise and lost power and began to slow down. No warning lights displayed on my vehicle. It was discovered that the rod had pierced through the engine block causing the oil to leak. This is urgent that this recall is extended to the 2. 0l engine.
On 02/15/2019 I was driving on county hwy h in delta township, WI at 45 mph when suddenly I heard a loud noise and my 2014 kia Soul lost power. As it lost power, first my oil light started blinking and then my check engine light came on and started blinking also. I was able to turn it around and drive approx. 100 ft into the delta town hall parking lot where I discovered my engine was smoking and I had lost numerous fluids out of the engine. I then called a local wrecker and they towed it to their shop. A&l auto in iron river, WI. They stated after looking at it that something made a large hole in the side of the engine and most likely the engine would need to be replaced. I then requested they tow it to the kia dealership in duluth, mn where I purchased the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2014 kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle failed to exceed 60 mph, with an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The contact checked the oil dipstick which showed no oil present. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where an oil change was performed. The vehicle then was taken to jones kia (2001 bel air rd, fallston, MD 21047, (410) 877-1700) where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had oil consumption and a test was performed. The ecm was updated on February 3, 2021 however, the failure recurred. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 20v750000 (engine) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact with a case number. The manufacturer declined to provide an engine replacement. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.
On 09/23/2018, while driving 70 on the highway about 1 month after my tune up, my car started making this horrible noise and the engine and oil lights started flashing and the car started jerking and rattling really hard. I pulled over and discovered that the engine blew a spark wire (I have a video). I drove to the nearest advance auto parts and a mechanic of 30 years said he never seen nothing like it. The next day I took it back to castrol (who completed my tune up) and they changed all spark plugs and wires stating that they never seen that happen before and there were no leaks and no indication as to why that happened. On 12/172018, the car started jerking and rattling again while going about 45-50 on a main road and once I parked, it completely shut off. I had it towed to ed voyle kia and was told that there was a recall on my engine so it will be replaced. They put me in a rental and two months later I was told that yes, there is a recall, however, my VIN # hasn't come up yet so I can pay out of pocket and be reimbursed once my VIN# come up. They took the rental back and I'm now without transportation. I can't get to work and I still owe about 10k on my car. No one is helping me at kia and I've been given the run around. I literally was provided a po box to send my complaint to. I've spoken to several people yet no one seem to care.
While driving on interstate at 60 mph loud sound from engine and all power lost. Was able to pull over to shoulder and dip stick showed no oil in engine. Oil just change by two months prior by kia dealership. Looked under car and pool of oil. Had to have vehicle towed to dealership and was informed the engine blew and it was not covered under manufacturers warranty as we purchased this vehicle used from the dealership and the warranty is not transferable. The vehicle had 70,000 miles and the engine blew. So much for a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty when kia does not transfer the warranty to a vehicle they sell at the dealership. Its called a manufacturer warranty not a owner warranty. Kia needs to step up and take responsibility for the faulty engines they have used. The dealership even admitted this was a engine failure and not owner failure. I have owned 4 kia's and will never own another one.
On 10/25/2017 while driving on the highway, my 2014 kia Soul caught on fire - spontaneously and without warning (no apparent issues in operating the car, warning lights on the dash, etc. ). Two fellow motorists honked their horns and flashed their lights in an effort to signal me. The back windshield began to 'fog up' due to the heat/fire, and we immediately pulled off the highway. In an effort to escape this emergency, I along with my son, who was driving, immediately got out of the vehicle and moved a safe distance away before calling 911. At this point flames were coming from both underneath the vehicle and from the engine compartment. The car was soon engulfed in flames. Multiple fire engines responded to the scene in extinguishing the fire and securing the scene. The car was a complete loss (see pictures attached in the report). It is important to note that my 2014 kia Soul was taken to a local kia dealership between 10/17/2017 - 10/19/2017 for diagnostics due to lights (internal and on the dash) flickering and an abnormal sound. The dealership's service department replaced the battery, performed a safety inspection, but were unable to identify the flickering lights issue, nor were they able to identify the source of the abnormal sound although they did acknowledge its presence. The service department released the vehicle to me and advised me to drive the vehicle to see what happened. My car was brought home, parked, and not driven until the incident on 10/25/2017.
