Tl - the contact owned a 2020 kia Sportage. The contact was at a red light when he a smoke odor was detected and another driver informed him that black smoke was coming from the exhaust. The contact stated that as he was exiting the vehicle, he saw flames igniting under the hood of the vehicle and moments later the vehicle burst into flames. The vehicle was towed to a lot and the insurance company deemed it totaled. The contact informed the dealer of the failure but the dealer wanted to sell the contact another vehicle. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 11,600. Tp.

On 10/9/2020 driving south on PA. Turnpike ne extension when engine stated knocking and losing power. Pulled over on the shoulder of the road and tried to restart it but it would not turn over. Contacted roadside assistance and had it towed to the nearest service station. They could not look at it until the next day as they were very busy. When they did look at it they said the engine needed to be replaced as something went wrong internally with the engine. They said they could get it to start but that it shouldn't be driven as the knocking on the engine was getting extremely loud when you try to accelerate. The car was then towed to another service station closer to home. It sat there for a week before they could look at it. They reached the same conclusion after replacing the engine air filter, the cabin air filter, cam shaft wt solenoid - exhaust with an oem part. When replacing the solenoid they noticed metal shavings in the motor oil. They informed me that the engine should probably be replaced. The vehicle has just over 93735 miles on it.

At 97,xxx miles, the connecting rod bearings failed and the engine seized. The failure ruptured the oil pan, spraying oil on the engine, exhaust headers, and the road. The engine lost power at highway speeds and the vehicle coasted to the side of the road. The failure was sudden without any warning lights, noise, or performance loss prior to the failure. This failure seems similar to other failures with kia and Hyundai engines, however this specific engine was not listed in a NHTSA recall. Kia has refused to warranty the failure, stating it was not "due to a manufacturing defect". The engine model is a 2. 4l dohc mpi theta-ii. Other theta-ii engines have been recalled, just not this very specific type.

I was driving down the road at 45 mph probably a few hundred yards from getting on the highway when black smoke came out of the exhaust of my Sportage and it completely went dead. Luckily, I had a place to stop just to the left of the highway entrance. I can't imagine what could have happened had this occurred at highway speeds. I learned from the dealer that this is actually a known problem with the kia theta engines. The bearings and rods in my engine were apparently shredded and the engine seized. While the dealer is paying for the damage under warranty, the car will be returned to original state meaning the engine and the car will be extremely dangerous. If what happened to me happens to anyone driving on the highway, it's very easy to imagine the possibility of a fatal crash. These engines need to be recalled and have a proper fix in place before someone dies. I've now read hundreds of complaints similar to mine on the internet so action needs to be taken beyond the class action lawsuit that was filed in June for this very same issue.

The contact owns a 2001 kia Sportage purchased on August 25, 2009. There was a noise under the hood. An independent mechanic stated that the catalytic converter was removed and replaced by a pipe that should not have been on the vehicle. She also stated the air conditioning unit continued to leak water from the vents and onto the floor board. The mechanic stated that there was allergy in the air conditioning unit. The failure and current mileages were 75,200.

I have a 1999 kia Sportage with less than 35,000 miles on it as of July 5, 2006. In November of 2005 I started noticing a really strong fuel smell. Shortly thereafter I noticed fluid leaking from the rear of my vehicle. I took it in around thanksgiving to find out that the gas tank had to be replaced. I had to pay almost $1,000 for this repair. Also, in may of 2006 power steering fluid leaked all over my garage while the car was in summer storage. Upon further investigation it is due to the power steering pressure hose damping pipe rusting out. This car has also already have to get new front brake rotors (rusted/warped) as well as a new exhaust pipe since the previously one rusted off the muffler. Within the first couple years one of the bearings went bad and they ended up replacing the whole front axle unit. This car has had many problems and with less than 35,000 miles on it basically makes me sick to my stomach. . Read more...

2001 kia Sportage, stopped dead in the middle of a major highway. The consumer was unable to get a full alignment because the idler was defective, on 2 occasions the vehicle would not start and it had to be jump started, which was due to defective battery terminals, the radio, font brakes exhaust system, air condition valve cover gasket, front wheel bearing, cruise control were all inoperative, the vehicle has had 2 engine replacements, and the drive belts were out of tension.
2001 kia Sportage suffered two complete engine failures. Along with the engine failures, there were problems with the radio, battery and the terminals, front brakes, a sensor knock, exhaust system, air condition, valve cover gasket, front wheel bearings, front pads and rotors, cruise control, and a defective idler arm.
The contact stated engine light illuminated intermittently and the rpm gauge was reading incorrectly, either very high or not reading at all when the same amount of pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal. Also, the exhaust was glowing red underneath the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the dealership eight times, and they have been unable to diagnosis the problem.
Vehicle's engine and a/c failed. The consumer had to replace two engines within a 40000 mile usage. The vehicle stopped dead on a very busy us route 1 hwy. The sudden stop caused a traffic tie up and the vehicle was nearly rear ended by a air conditioning, the vehicle needed a complete engine replacement, valve cover gasket, front wheel bearings, drive belts out of tension, cruise control, v belts replaced, brakes and rotors, exhaust system.
Smell of exhaust coming from under hood again. Has been in shop number of times, check engine came on 50 miles after leaving dealership for repairs. Runs very bad, same as before repairs. Has been out of warrnety for while, pay for repairs out of pocket.
This car is absolutely unsafe to drive; at any moment it may stall due to the faulty electrical system. I have had this car in for service numerous times and I have never gotten the problem resolved. I have simply had enough and would like some help.

99 kia Sportage surges when starting and idles so rough when stopped that you think the car will die, has died a few times. Dealer has not been able to determine the cause to repair. All recall work was done, including the wiring harness fix sc014, but there was no symptom of problem then. Extended warranty has expired, and continually finding problem with car. Also tail pipe recently broke off had to be replaced. I now have a spreadsheet of the problems and repairs. Would like to fix this problem if I knew what it was. Had mass air flow sensor, throttle position sensor, numerous other parts replaced as well as a tune up. Also the exhaust smells bad. Engine doesn't have much pick up on small hills either.
Rattle/vibratin coming from under car. Convertor replaced with no results. Told convertors are defective. The rattle /vibration happens every time I shift from low gear to high gear or visa-versa. They will not do transmission diagnostics. I was told that it was the resonance(sp?) in the exhaust system, this noise is normal.

Been having air condition issues since 12/02 the problem is still not corrected. The ac problem has been long and on going. There is like a fog coming out of it once it has been on and then you hit the ac button off and some white flakes come out of it. The blower motor has been replaced in it. It was making moisture under my dashbroad on the passenger side. Still waiting for that to be done. Apparently they put the car up on racks uped the rpms and say that where the pressure should be at is not. It exceeds where it should be. Waiting for those parts to come in. Had issues with exhaust had entire new exhaust put on the car through out the month of August 03. Was done in pieces because instead of checking the entire system they saw one problem fixed that and told me it was complete. Well the noise continued took it back and under the heat manafold there was another probelm. Needless to say once a week for the month of August expect for the week I was on vacation. Have had power window issues with two windows not rolling down, was unable to duplicate the first time so sent me on my way and had to bring it back when they could witness the problem. Cup holder has broken, dome light, latch on back seat replaced. Fan cracked in 3 spots. Belts have had to be replaced after a 30000 mile checkup and power flush turn on the car and loud noise coming from engine. Was told that belts were loose. They should have been checked twice one wiht each service that was done. $600 service. They took it back and tightened them so they said. Next day noise again from them. Took it back into the dealer they had to be completely replaced.
We had the transmission replaced in April of 2003 and the clutch replaced in April 2003. The clutch was not covered under warranty. We paid total cost $366. 76. The transmission has now gone out again. The transmission is only 2 months old. This will be the 6th problem we have had with this car since October of 2002: (1) clutch switch oct 2002 (2) exhaust manifold cracked Apr 2003 (3) passenger side front window would not go up Apr 2003 (4) transmission failure April 2003 (5) clutch failure April 2003 (6) transmission failure June 2003.
I was wondering if you would know where I can get my vehicle tested for health issues. I purchased a 2002 kia Sportage at the end of January 2002. I have a complaint about my vehicle that the dealership does not seem to be able to fix. It has a very strong odor that is coming into the vehicle through the air vents. The dealership has replaced the catalytic converter but it has not helped at all. The dealership does not know what the problem is. I finally got them to go for a test drive with me and had them smell the odor just last week. I had been trying to get them to go for a test drive with me since may 2002. My vehicle has 15000 miles on it so it is to late for me to get the manufacturer to purchase the vehicle back under the oregon lemon law. I tried to go through the arbitration process before I hit 12,000 miles but the person I spoke to said I did not have a case because I only had service orders for 2 of the 4 times I took the vehicle in for the odor. The dealership did not write up a service order for the smell until the 3rd time I took the car to them. I am hoping that you or someone you know might be able to help me with this problem. I do not think that the smell is very safe for my children and myself to be smelling. It happens every time I drive my vehicle. The brakes build up a black dust that is very excessive around the rim of my front tires within 6 months they were 30 percent warn. Dt.

Exhaust leaks at gasket, wires shorting in harness to alternator both fixed under warranty.
Upon starting vehicle a smell came from exhaust. While driving smell intensified. Took to dealer. Mechanic stated smell was coming from tail pipe. The consumer believes the exhaust fume was due to defective muffler and should be replaced. Another center stated that the vehicle had bad odor from O2 sensor, catalytic converter or emission problems.

There is so many things wrong with kia products and they should not even be allowed on the road. There is always something going wrong with them and I want my money back! no safety defect listed within summary.
Consumer smelled exhaust fumes inside of vehicle and became sick. Had to open windows for ventilation. Dealer and manufacturer contacted, but unable to correct the problem.
