Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises Problems of Kia Motor Sportage - part 1

As driving down the highway at 65 we noticed a abrupt loss of power followed shortly after by several warning lights and vehicle engine shitting off. After safetly pulling off side of road I popped the hood to look for any obvious issues non were found no smoke, smell of burning or hot, checked oil level which was fine. Got back in vehicle and it restarted fine but has a audible clickick noise, we decided to have the vehicle trailered home to prevent any forther damage. When this took place there were no active check engine lights or any info on temp guage that was out of the ordinary. The next day I checked the ool again and decided to start the vehicle once again started with no issie but has a audible click thst gets liuder with applied rpm. Went ahead and put in drive to check if yransmission was finctioning and appears to work in drive and recerse only moved a few feet then shit it off. We seen that kia has had several recalls over manufacturing drfects for engines thst cause these malfunctions but according to the dealer ours does not fall in that catagory.

On 12-23-2020, we were coming back home after doing some grocery shopping, I was doing 70 mph on a busy highway, then suddenly heard a loud noise and car stall after that without any notice, which was pretty scary especially when driving on a fat highway and having a toddler in the back, all 3 lights came on the dash (oil, battery, check engine). Car didn't want to start after that, so I called a friend to help us get home since it was only a mile away from where we live. However, the car started an hour later but didn't drive more than 5 seconds and stalled again. I have it towed to my mechanic the next day. He inspected and didn't see anything wrong. He drove it for two days and nothing. Two weeks later after going on a trip I started hearing this tapping noise at 2000 rpm, which is coming from the engine. The car isn't leaking any oil, and it has only 99k miles, been changing oil on time, and all necessary filters. At the moment of writing this complain, no check engine light is on.

Turned my car on and heard a weird ticking sound while it was idol. I decided to take it in to my mechanic. On the way to the mechanic, the sound started happening while accelerating. Once I reached 40 mph, the car stopped accelerating and stalled. I had to use the momentum and turn left into dirt parking lot to pull over since there was no pull over lane on the right side. My passenger and back windows do not work unless driver pushes buttons next to them to roll windows down.

Around thanksgiving I noticed a knocking/ rattling/ clanking sound under my hood in the engine area, which occasionally increased/decreased when the rpms moved. Due to covid and not traveling I didnt drive it for a few days. I went to the store on 11/30 and the sound was louder and more startling. I had my husband check it when he got home. We noticed recalls on the vehicle but my VIN never registered. Because my vehicle is used to transport children, my husband asked me to make an appointment with the dealership ASAP to have it looked at. I made the appointment for 12/1. While on the highway to get to my appointment the sound progressively got worse - then all lights went on in the dash and the gas stopped working. It was like my vehicle was in neutral when I pressed the gas. It would not start again and the steering wheel was locked. I waited over an hour for a tow truck; on the shoulder of a busy highway, during rush hour. It was dropped at the dealer and we are currently waiting on a report as to whats wrong. We believe it falls in line with the current recalls.

So since I purchased the vehicle around this time last year the feeling while driving my kia was smooth no vibration or notice coming from the car, I havent had any kind of accidents or hit any pot holes, so now a year into having the kia and keeping all the fluids, brakes, and tires changed I noticed before getting it services and having those listed changed there is a feeling in the steering front end of what I say feels like the tires are going to fold up under the car. When turning the steering seems to feel really loose and I have to correct it out of the direction I just turn to make the vehicle to correctly drive forward. It has pulled to the right for a long time and this is one of the reasons I replaced the tires. Also there is a ticking noise coming from the engine and after learning about a recall with this kia that cause the engine to catch fire I called and the vehicle has already had this issue repaired but it is making that clicking or ticking sound still and the exhaust has moisture coming from it only on the right passenger side and the pipe it completely black from whatever it is putting out . .

Engine failed at app. 114,770 miles while in motion on a highway. Started with slight tapping sound, progressed to loud knocking sound, progressed to sounding like bowling ball rolling around in engine in a matter of a few miles no engine light or any service lights came on engine needed to be replaced - car has been serviced regularly at the dealer - never had a warning light or oil light there is a recall on this engine for many 2013 Sportages but not my car dealer informed me that they replace this particular engine on Sportages 10 times a week.

I was driving at around 55mph on the highway when I heard a clinking noise coming from the front end of my car and it stopped accelerating despite my foot pressing the gas pedal. I lost power. No warning lights went off on the display dash. The engine stalled shortly after while I was still in motion. I was luckily able to pull over safely. I tried turning over the ignition but the engine just clanked but didn't start. I had just had the oil changed and the temperature gauge did not read anything abnormal. Only after I pulled over did the engine light come on. I checked the oil and it was still full. I looked under the frame and noticed dripping oil. I noticed pieces of metal on the ground and retrieved them. (photo 1) they appear to be piston connecting rod pieces. There is currently a class action lawsuit settlement in place for issues related to connecting rod bearing wear leading to engine failure resulting in the engine seizing increasing the risk of crash, damaged pistons, and a cracked engine block with the engines in 2011-2019 kia Sportages equipped with a 2. 0l or 2. 4l gasoline direct injection engine. (engine failure and fire). I have a 2013 2. 4l. (recall number 17v224000. Kia's number for this recall is sc147) although according to the kia website, my VIN was not included for some unknown reason. Terms of the settlement include but not limited to free inspection and repair or replacement of damaged engines, lifetime warranty for short block assembly repairs, free installation of the knock sensor detection system software update (from a previous recall 17v-224), as well as goodwill compensation. The oil spilled out onto the tow truck bed during the trip to my house. I assessed the damage with my dad and noticed the hole in the bottom of the engine block. (photo 2). We realized the rod blew through the engine block.

I purchased this car in September of 2017 with only 40,000 on it & never had 1 issue with the car. However, on April 16th of 2020 I was on my way to work when I heard I ticking sound from the engine & 30 seconds later the car shut down. I was able to steer it off the highway on to the shoulder. I called for a tow & the car was taken to the mechanic shop & the engine had to be replaced due to a spun rod bearing. I was shocked & disappointed due the vehicle only had 84,647 miles on the odometer. The cost of the engine & a rental car was about $6,400 all together!!!.

The vehicle has 85447 miles. Driver was driving down the road when they heard a loud clanking noise followed by a complete failure and seizing of the lower engine mechanism. All this occurred in a few minuets time span. The car was in motion on a rural hwy when the engine seized. Car and driver were stranded on side of the hwy requiring the need to be towed. Upon research, I believe this is related to the current scv147 or 17v224000 recall. Kia motors recall line was contacted and they stated that this car is not listed as part of the recall listed above. The description of events of other drivers leads me to believe that this is similar in nature. I believe this should be researched further and the current recall should be expanded. The vehicle acts as if the lower bearing gave out prematurely.

Before this happened thought I heard a slight tapping sound like a rocker arm but didn't hear again day or two before as I would top a hill left my home. A couple of days later while driving on a city street in traffic engine died or shut off. Behind another car I had to turn out of my lane to avoid the rear-ending vehicle in front with no power steering struck a curb to my left oncoming lane coasted back on road crossed both lanes to the right finally coming to rest in small gravel lot of closed building. Put car in park and tried to start would not turn the engine over. I thought I damaged starter when I jumped curb. That night had towed to my home less than five mins away $90. 00 bought starter puton tested old one, no good. Probably from trying to start over and over. Finally got motor to turn over sounded ok. When for test drive then motor made large knocking noise, I shut off quickly, had towed to mechanic shop. They inspected and determined motor had internal damage. $52. 00 quote to replace motor 9,000. 00 generally speaking conversation over the phone . (weekend) Monday missed work no car. 27. 00 hourly 8 hours. I had car put on trailer carried home following weekend $60. 00. I bought this car new in 2012 had oil changed at first until kia stripped out my drain plug and didnt tell me. So did it myself from then on. Never had one issue with this car untill this in one day.

The vehicle was purchased used on 07/2019. The failure mileage was 45,000.

I have had this car for 8 months, and it only has 108,000 miles on it. Kia refuses to take ownership of their defective product!.

I was driving with my daughter at 7:30 pm on santiago canyon road orange, CA. When I noticed a clicking sound and caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye of a light reflecting off the road. I instantly pulled over and told my daughter to get out. The car took about 3 to 4 minutes to totally go up in flames. I was never contacted about any potential problems with this car or anything about the kia sorrento we also own. Now I won't be driving that car either.

The contact stated that the failure was similar to NHTSA campaign number 17v224000 engine and engine cooling . Ap.

While driving a ticking noise and loss of power was occurring. Ticking became louder, engine stops while in the lane. Didn't quite make it completely into the shoulder. Was on interstate 40 leaving albuquerque. Called 911, they told me to stay in car. Trucks and traffic were to heavy to even get out until the highway patrolman arrived and he blocked traffic with his lights. He stated this was the worst place to possibly break down.

The manufacturer was contacted, but did not assist. The failure mileage was 85,000.

On June 18th car was making ticking noise. Checked oil, oil full. No dash warning indicators on. Drove to work and on drive home from work vehicle began making noise, engine began making noise, sounding like bolts tumbling in a dryer. Maximum speed home 25mph. Local mechanic looked at vehicle and said without tearing motor apart he believed the bearing was gone. Contacted dealership where purchased and was told to bring it there to be diagnosed. On July 10th their diagnosis was 0 psi on all four cylinders. Requires replacing the engine. Repair quote given was: short block plus parts was $10,584. 42 or used long block $6,558. 24. On 18th received important safety recall #19v101. Dealership responded by telling me that recall was not the problem. Purchased extended warranty agreement on date of purchase 10-10-2017. Warranty was for 120 months or 125,000 miles. Car has 125,235 miles currently on it.

Driving on the highway, started making weird ticking noise, started to lose acceleration, vehicle shut off and smoke coming from under the hood. Turner kia says that I no longer have the certified pre-owned warranty(I'm over by less than 1k miles) and wants $129 just to run diagnostics and from looking at this website, there have been many other people with the same issue. Why hasn't this been recalled!?.

I was driving on the highway at approximately 70 mph. There was a loud cracking noise and my vehicle began to smoke. I immediately pulled over and turned off the vehicle. When I opened the hood I could see some flames in the engine bay. There was a significant amount of oil that had leaked out after pulling over. The car had to be towed to a repair shop. I am still waiting for more information but I have been told by the mechanic that the engine will need to be replaced.

Driving from arizona to vegas on highway 93 northbound , no prior problem, no warning suddenly heard a vibrating or ticking noise, car suddenly wouldn't excell and lost rpm, then I heard a few thumps and the check engine and battery light came on. I glided to a stop on side of freeway and car wouldn't start. Called tow. Smoke was coming from under hood. Had signs of leaking some fresh fluid. Was told engine seezed. Possibly but only 52,000 miles.

Engine started making loud clanging noises with a strong burnt oil smell while driving down the highway roughly 500 miles from home. Pulled over under power but had the car towed to a mechanic who declared the engine required replacement. We could not justify the $6k cost of replacement so junked the car with a local salvage yard that was not affiliated with the mechanic.

During a return trip I suddenly hear a clicking noise coming from the engine bay area so I pulled over and parked the car for a quick check and while the noise persisted I needed to find a safer location so I drove off and eventually found a safer place to park but the noise was even louder as tho a rod was thrown and by the time I found this parking spot the car had lost all power. This happened so suddenly and without warning as a few hours prior there was no indication of any engine problems.

Wife was driving home from work, 45min drive. 10min left in the drive, she started hearing a noise from the engine and loss of power. Luckily she was able to coast the way home, but after 2 mechanic opinions, it is a dead engine due to the ticking/clanking noise from the engine. First mechanic said piston issue (without diagnostics), second said metal shavings and the engine basically killed itself. I made sure this car had on-time oil changes and at 116k miles was just about to do a full sparkplug/100k mileage tune-up. When will kia understand that 2011-2013 models are not the only models effected by these engine issues?! we now are down a car, still owe on it, (I believe) at no fault to our own. Kia did send out an ecu update (feb15/19) that (per a kia dealership employee) warranties the engine for the life of the engine, but what about people who have already been effected with these issues?!.

Our 2016 kia Sportage began emitting light smoke out of the exhaust. We became concerned and asked out dealer to look into things. The dealership said they needed to do tests (this consisted of filling the oil up and asking us to drive 1500miles) we did as they asked and pithing 700mile the engine started to make clacking noises and on 2 occasions lost power. We returned the car to the dealership stating our concerns, they wanted to repeat the test but we refused to drive the car. The dealerships communication was very poor, never replying to our calls or emails so we decided to contact consumer affairs. The first call was great, very supportive and informative. Said they would help and we would be totally covered. This is as good as things got, consumer affairs proceeded to repeat the same poor communication as the dealership showed and not reply to call and if they did take a call said we needed to speak to our case worked who was never in work that day. Finally the dealership said that the engine had sludge in the engine and it would need a complete replacement (this is a 3 yearly car with 60,000 miles) kia refused to honer the warranty as we didn't have enough service records (never stating what was enough) and now we are in the process of appealing and consumer affairs and the dealership are repeating the lack of communication with us.

I bought my Sportage used with 102000 miles on it. I drove it for 4 1/2 monhths [4100 miles]. I was on the highway when it started to stall. Then it started making a loud tapping noise. I had it towed to the kia dealer and the engine is no good. I need another one, but my VIN is not on the recall because it's a 2. 4l and only the 3. 0l for this model is recalled. Even though the 2. 4l in the sorento is on the recall list. I'm waiting to hear what I can do but they ought to give me an engine since it is recalled on other kias. At this point I'm railing because I spent $9000 for 4 months of use if they don't give me an engine.

On Saturday December 8, 2018 leaving gatlinburg 2 hours out at 10:40 on the interstate returning to murfreesboro, TN; kiara call me stating her truck was making a ticking noise and was losing power. She went on to say that it had stalled out and died on the side of the road for about 10-15 mins. It then crank back up and seemed fine but the tick noise was still there, so she proceeded onward. So then I got another call from kiara about 45 min to an hour later, just getting into cookeville, stating the truck was now making a knocking noise along with the ticking but seemed to be a bit sluggish every so often. Unsure of what the case may be with the truck, I advised her to pull over and check the oil and see if it may need some additional oil put in it. So she did and added a little oil to see if it would either quiet or cease the noise, it didn't. So I then told her to leave the truck at the gas station and we'll figure out how to get it home the following day. So that following Monday I rented a truck and trailer from u-haul and decided to go pick up the kia Sportage to bring it back home. After listening while loading it up, I could tell it was nothing good going to come from this ordeal. Due to our financial situation when we got home there was nothing at that time that could be done pertaining to the vehicle, so we left it parked on the parking lot where we live until we had the necessary funds to get the vehicle properly diagnosed. My mother, eugenie called the kia customer service number on Jan. 16, 2019 to see if there were any recalls on the vehicle because of the issues that kiara was having, but she was told that kiara bass could call them back to file a complaint, and that would get the ball rolling, but the vehicle would need to be taken to the dealership to be diagnosed of the problems. The vehicle is not driveable due to fear of a breakdown on the road.
