7 Engine Failure problem of the 2020 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/18/2019

Kia sent me a letter telling me my car is subject to a "product improvement program" which requires a program update to my cars engine control unit. This is because my engine may experience catastrophic bearing failure possibly destroying the engine. My complaint is that this notice should be a recall notice. They are not improving anything. The underlying problem that will cause the engine failure has not been addressed and won't be by this so called 'product improvement program'. I asked kia why they aren't fixing the problem with the engines at the factory instead of just adding an early warning system to the ecu? this is absolutely crazy. I don't want a brand new car that can possibly have a total engine failure. I don't want a car that warns you that your car is about to have an engine failure. That is not a proper way at all to fix a problem. You fix a problem at the engine factory. . . Not in the field. I am having this program update done tomorrow and then the next day I am getting rid of my brand new 2020 kia Sportage and buying a car, any car, that doesn't have an engine that could possibly blow up at any time. Kia have put the onus of this problem on the backs of their customers. It doesn't belong there. It belongs on kia, not me.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/14/2019

While driving on the highway, I attempted to increase my speed and the vehicle begin to decrease in speed. I immediately got pulled over and the vehicle slowed all the way down and stopped. The car wouldn't restart or go. At this time 2 lights appeared on the dash, the oil light and battery light. My oil had recently been change 2 weeks prior. Once towed to a shop, they determined it could be engine issues because the car had power but wouldn't turnover. I then towed the vehicle to the kia dealership where they said there could be a battery issue. Once the battery was ruled out, I was called 30 minutes later and informed my engine was locked. At 148, 000 miles and the only owner of the car, I had not prior warnings of sudden engine failure. I was on the highway going 80 mph, no noises, no lights, nothing. I was told there was no recall on the vehicle and it was like a person dying of old age. There are recalls on the 2012 kia Sportages for engine issues.

9 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/04/2019

My engine seized and stopped while driving. Engine began knocking earlier that day with no prior warnings, lights illuminating, etc. I wasn't even able to get it home or to the dealership before it died. We perform regular maintenance on our car and there is no reason it should've died so soon. It needs a completely new engine now. Similar models are already on recall and a pending lawsuit for similar models but they don't seem to include the mpi engine. Only turbo and gdi are included, which is wrong because I've found many reports of this engine failing too. There's a big problem here.

10 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 09/12/2019

Engine had a knocking in it. Took to a garage and was told engine had failed at 128,000 miles and needs a new engine. Called kia and was told not on recall even though two other engines for this year are recalled due to early engine failure. Hoping this model engine will soon be on the recall list also.

11 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/29/2019

I was on the interstate driving around 70 miles per hour my car died as in stopped in front of a semi! my car has been serviced regularly and had no problems -nothing-no noise it just died. We are lucky I was not killed. Car was towed to cookeville kia they said it was internal engine failure possible rod bearing. He told us it would cost around $7000 to fix. I still owe 4000 on my piece of crap of a car that only had 130,000miles on it. I have had a few nightmares from the ordeal and in general, I'm kinda scared to drive even a few days later. I am so disappointed I was told it's not under recall but however I keep seeing the same year and car on all kind of websites with the same problem. The only thing good about this situation is that my children were not in the car with me. I will never purchase another kia! -kim taylor.

Failure Date: 06/24/2019

I was driving to work and my car stalled and just stopped accelerating so I pulled off and got it towed to a shop and they told me it was the whole engine. There is a recall for my 2011-2013 kia Sportage but our VIN isn't covered because the engine was purchased from a different warehouse they said. It's just frustrating because our car is the right year, make, and model for the engine failure recall. It it isn't covered even though the exact same issue happened that happened on other 2011-2013 kia Sportages. It was very dangerous as I was on the highway and am pregnant and now my husband and I are at a loss of what to do. We've only had this car for 3 years and still owe money on it but need a whole new engine for it.

The next day I had aaa tow vehicle to a local repair shop. I contacted kia at that time and was told my vehicle was not included in the recall . I had several mechanics diagnose problem including my local kia dealership for a fee. As I trailed behind my friend as he slowly drove vehicle from 1 shop to kia, I noticed fire underneath the vehicle so we stopped and towed vehicle the rest of the way. Kia shop verified it to be engine failure and quoted me a repair fee of $7500 to $9000 to repair the problem. I had just spent $3000 about 3 months earlier for a new transmission so I decided to donate vehicle instead of spend more money.

Brand new car, 11 months old , 5,925 miles, serviced with first oil change 5 days before problem occurred. 24 Engine Failure problem of the 2018 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 01/12/2019

After 2 attempts to try and have the soul repaired properly as to steering and at least 30 emails and begging for help, and finding myself the reason there was a recall on a recall. . . We contacted senator marco rubio who in turn contacted NHTSA, a congressional aide etc. No help came for two disabled persons. I even wrote about the souls catching fire and joseph mraz jr witnessed a soul crash due to steering. We begged citrus kia, Kia Motors, kia America to refund our money. We lost our home built for our disabilities to toxic drywall, we were in propublica, huff post and tampa bay times. No recovery, we slept in our kia optima which is why we purchased the soul. Two weeks later, the first recall. 2 yrs no one did a thing. In December at christmas, kia America " challenge " the dealerships. To sell everything. We were once again duped. Citrus kia called numerous times , what they did was brought us in under false pretense, they financed thru kia, the 2018 Sportage. Now, we are in further debt with a car they all knew was defective. "software upgrade", OH and by the way", keep this letter in your glove box for ever "in case" the engine failes and if you, the customer who bought in good faith that it was safer than the soul, if you do not get it to dealer if and when light comes on. You will be considered "abusing the car" the consumer is supposed to drive and live in fear? NHTSA had not approved this bandaid. The 1000 Sportages need to be traded for 2019. This is a sad day when a gai , we have to live and drive in fear and pay money . I have read the news articles, the whistleblower. This "software upgrade" is not right. The fires are horrific. One person stated her car still had issues. This is criminal as to what Kia Motors, kia America, citrus kia has and is still doing to two disabled persons. We need some help. Our auto insurance premium. Increased. Julie mraz.

27 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 10/06/2018

Engine failure as described in multiple complaints and same as current recall for which my VIN is supposedly not affected. Regular maintenance as been performed. 1 day after most recent oil change, accelerated to enter interstate. Heard a pop then seen black smoke. Pulled over to side of interstate and popped the hood only to find a small engine fire. Very glad this wasn't a very busy time on the road as this could have been catastrophic.

28 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 09/05/2018

29 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 09/03/2018

Abrupt catastrophic engine failure- I was driving approximately 75 mph on interstate I-80 heading westbound in wyoming at approximately milepost 77. The car suddenly began shaking for about one second and then a large short puff of black smoke. The car then immediately shut off and the oil, engine, and battery warning lights turned on. Luckily I was able to safely pull over to the side of the freeway. The temperature gauge was in the normal range. I got out of the car to inspect what the problem was. I notice a significant amount of engine oil dripping from the engine and that engine oil had sprayed over various parts of the car. I did not try to restart due to the significant amount of oil loss. I was in a remote location with poor cell phone reception. I had to climb up a nearby hill to contact roadside assistance. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest town to spend the night. I then had the vehicle towed to a kia dealership first thing in the morning. After the kia dealership inspected the vehicle, they stated that there was a hole in the engine block and the engine needed to be replace. I had the vehicle serviced regularly with full synthetic oil. I also checked the oil and fuel levels before I left on my trip 4 days earlier and they were all at normal levels and the oil was a normal color.

30 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Driving out of town and engine failed.

32 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/13/2018

I was on the highway going 70 mph when my car start to rattle and white smoke start coming out of the back of my car . . . 3 warning light popped up on my dash and my car drastically slowed crow while I was on the highway luckily I was close to an exit. I could have caused an accident!!! had the car towed back to kia dealers. . Where they tell me there is nothing much they can do cuz the car is not in warranty. . Was not in warranty when they sold it to me that the car needed a new engine because the engine failed . . . I have only had the car 2 year 80 000 millie's and it's not even paid off . . . . Feel like I have been ripped off from kia . . . Don't by one of their cars!!!!! they are also saying it hard to find a engine for my car cuz they are most out of stock or on back order . . . No wonder all these cars are drying !!!!.

33 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/12/2018

2. 4 gdi engine recall was not extended to my vehicle but engine failed while driving in freeway for same failure reason as other 2013 vehicles recalled and now am facing an engine replacement on a vehicle with 61k miles. No warning lights illuminated prior to engine failure and all maintenance completed on time.

34 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/04/2018

As I was driving down the highway at about 70 mph my rpm dropped to 0, check engine, oil and battery lights all came on and my speed dropped to about 35 mph in a matter of seconds. I was able to pull over and shut the car off, it would not restart. State police were on the scene within a half hour, setting up flares, and I had to have the car towed only to be informed that it was in complete engine failure. My 2. 4l engine was not included in the recall, as kia so quickly informed me when I tried to get assistance, and my warranty had expired exactly 3 months 22 days prior to the engine failure. Kia has offered no help whatsoever, if they return my calls, so I am now expected to put a new engine in a car that is 5 years old with only 55,000 miles on it, out of my own pocket. Car was maintained, routine oil changes, absolutely no reason for this failure. Mechanic has stated finding a used engine to fit my model has been extremely difficult, as this seems to be a reoccurring issue with all Sportage models.

35 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/04/2018

I was driving down a busy street going 60mph when my engine just died. I coasted until I was able to pull over and thankfully no accident occurred. I tried to turn the key but the car wouldn't start. It was completely dead. It was towed to our local mechanic and we were told the engine was blown and he couldn't even turn it over manually. When looking for a new engine there was not 1 in all of the us available!! he mentioned the recall regarding engine failure on certain kia Sportages so I called the kia dealership and told them what happened. They said my VIN # was not part of the recall and my warranty had just expired so they were not able to help me at all! I couldn't believe what they were saying and especially how terrible they treated me. My car only has 80k miles on it and this was not right. I investigated the recall and found it was for the engines failing which is exactly what happened to mine. I also found a lot more people that have been dealing with this same situation for over a year now that are unable to even purchase another engine because there are none available due to all the engines exploding and needing replacement. They too were not under the VIN recall but their engines were doing the exact same thing. Kia is definitely hiding something and I think someone needs to seriously investigate this! my family could have died and so could all of the other family's that this has happened to. My car now sits in our driveway unable to drive, unable to fix and unable to sell yet I'm still having to make payments on it. I will never buy a kia again and I hope someone gets these lying jerks for what they've done and are continuing to do.
