36 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 06/29/2018

My 2012 kia Sportage engine had a catastrophic failure at 141,000 miles. There was metal debris in the engine, however, I am told that my particular engine is not in the class action lawsuit covering these engine failures. However, kia has discontinued the engine and now the replacement engine is back ordered 5-6 months. I have to speculate that there are more catastrophic engine failures out there that have not been addressed by the lawsuit. I am lodging a complaint because I believe they know there is a problem with this engine overall and they have decided that the number of complaints are too low to bother with. We were in the vehicle in commuter traffic on the freeway at the time that the engine failed. . . Thankfully, quick thinking saved us from having a wreck and we managed to get the vehicle off the road. My Sportage had been well maintained, all oil changes and maintenance performed at the right times. . . There was no reason for the engine to fail. $23,000 for a car that ran for 141,000 miles. . . So disappointed. And they want $6500 to do the repairs and I have to wait 5-6 months because of the back ordered engine! will never buy another kia. . . Should have bought a Honda crv. . . My sister's has 250,000 miles on it and it runs like it's new!.

40 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

We believe its part of known recall "sc147", in which kia is aware of theta engine failure rod knock. Vehicle was in motion, stopped to fill tank and knocking began, dropped it off at nearest kia dealer. Next day went in for warranty service and Kia Motors America, not thr dealer, denied warranty because vehicle was purchased in puerto rico and they claim they cannot see VIN # which has nothing to do with warranty. We are the original owners, pr is recognized as united states both through the constitution and jurisprudence under the supreme court of the united states. Kia motors America can confirm via pepe abad kia or motor ambar of pr that we are the original owners and vehicle is under warranty terms.

41 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 03/10/2018

2102 kia Sportage 2. 4l with the theta ii engine; engine failure with 74,000 miles. On March 10, 2018 driving from athens, georgia to orlando, florida on I-95 south. At approximately 2 pm in the afternoon, on a clear day, going 70 mph in the left most lane of the interstate, the engine suddenly started shaking and knocking then seized and slowed to a crawl. Very carefully had to get over three lanes to the shoulder in heavy traffic. We had never seen an engine light, or any other warning come on in the car prior to that time. Regular maintenance and oil changes had been performed. This is the same engine that is under recall, but the VIN does not fall under the recall. in doing more research we have seen that there are a huge number of 2012 of kia Sportage and other kia and Hyundai cars with the theta ii 2. 4l engine that have failed which do not fall within the recall sc147 service campaign. The overall issue is that our car's engine failed in the exact same way that those in the service campaign failed and with only 74,000 miles. on carcomplaints. Com alone out of the over 100 most current complaints for the kia Sportage, indicated they had engine failure. Because their VIN did not match the manufacturing plant they were not included in the recall. The most disturbing part of this is that most of the failures occurred at higher speeds and could have resulted in loss of life. how many of these cars with these engines were involved in car wrecks, were totaled and it was never discovered that the cause of the wreck was engine failure? could any of those resulted in deaths?.

42 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

The vehicle was towed to redding kia (418 e cypress Ave, redding, CA 96002, (888) 778-5635) who also diagnosed that the rod bearing failed. The dealer referred the contact to the manufacturer who stated that nothing could be done because the contact did not have proof of the oil changes. The vehicle was purchased from lithia Ford of klamath falls (2833 washburn way, klamath falls, or 97603, (541) 205-4501) where they denied performing the oil changes. The failure mileage was 91,000.

Car is a 2012 kia Sportage. 82,000 miles 5 yrs old. First instance. Car was moving around 2 mph through drive thru when the car stalled. Engine light came on at that time. Was able to restart. Took to dealership. Said the engine was dirty but could not find problem. 1 week later while exiting freeway around 20mph. Car shut off while still in motion but coming to a stop. Again engine light came on. Car turned over was able to restart. Happened again while approaching stop. Shut down before coming to complete stop. Had car towed to dealership. Found sluge build up and metal shavings in engine. Dealership now stating complete engine failure. Have extended warranty and will not cover engine due to "maintence" issue. 45 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 09/11/2017

My 2013 kia Sportage has engine failure at 60100 miles. Stalled on freeway twice trying to get it home after hearing a sound in engine. For some reason my kia VIN number is not included in the kia engine recall and it is going to cost me thousands to get repaired.

46 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/13/2017

The contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact heard a noise emerging from the engine compartment and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The contact continued driving to the residence. Once at the destination, the vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (freeway auto center in duluth minnesota) where they diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The contact also stated that the noise started three months before the actual failure occurred. The contact notified the manufacturer and was provided case number: 12428804. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.

47 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 06/26/2017

2013 kia Sportage engine failure in June of 2017. I was driving the vehicle eastbound at 75mph on interstate 10 bear blythe, az in significant traffic. The engine shut off and power steering failed. I able to avoid a collision but spun out into the interstate median. I had the vehicle towed to a kia dealership in avondale, az. Kia dealership confirmed the engine had seized. Kia denied warranty coverage for engine claiming it is not part of the kia engine safety recall campaign sc147. Kia claims the engine was manufactured in korea so it is not included. However, there are at least 6 other "not covered" Sportage's parked in service lot awaiting repair. Service manager reported to me that kia is denying the coverage when he "knows" the engine problem is caused by a defective manufacturing process.

48 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 05/31/2017

Was driving down the road at about 20-25 mph when the engine died without warning. After having it towed to a local shop, they determined there was an internal "catastrophic" engine failure. Had the car towed to the dealer where it was purchased, lee johnson kia in kirkland, wa. They confirmed the first diagnosis of catastrophic engine failure. It appears the engine starved itself of oil and exactly matches all of the symptoms described in the current kia "theta ii" engine recall campaign. The dealer agrees that it should be covered under the recall but kia refuses to cover it. We have been without this vehicle since late may 2017. It has been sitting at the dealer ever since. Kia's reasoning for not covering the engine replacement was that the engine did not originate from the assembly factory outlined in the recall. However, just as kia assumed the previous Hyundai recall didn't impact them (as noted in your currently open investigation), I believe they continue to underestimate the broader impact of this manufacturing defect across all of their assembly factories. This leaves customers like me to foot the bill and replace the defective engine with a used, also likely defective engine, to the cost of ~$7,000. This is unacceptable and unsafe. We count our blessing this didn't happen while on the freeway, as the outcome could have been deadly.

49 Engine Failure problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 02/03/2017

2011 kia Sportage - engine failed without warning with two toddlers in car. Luckily this happened as I turned off a highway and was able to stop on the shoulder. Manufacturer refuses to fix because I don't have maintenance record. I have a friend who has been changing oil/servicing car. I have learned that many owners of this year/model car have similar experiences. I feel the manufacturer should deal with a problem as severe as this immediately!.

50 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/17/2016

Our 2012 kia Sportage broke down over a month ago after my wife and daughter had just got off the PA turnpike, they had stopped at a mall an hour from home after traveling all day. When they returned to the car from shopping, it wouldn't start. It was towed to gateway kia of warrington at the advice of kia corporation of America, because that was the closest dealership. After sitting there for almost five days and no call from them, and multiple inquiries by us, they finally told us that it was engine failure. They ran basic diagnostic tests and never went any further as far as looking into the engine. Because we were the second owner off a one year lease, we weren't eligible for the original 10 year/100,000 warranty. Our warranty was now 5 years/ 50,000 miles. Our car has 70,0000 miles. So not covered we have been told. We kept good care of this car with regular oil changes and state inspections. After being told that we were not going to be covered, we started researching this problem. Soon after we found a law firm that was heading a class action suit against kia. The lawsuit alleged that kia has an ongoing problem with some of their engine, which includes our vehicle and engine. We were also notified that the law firm had ceased to pursue the suit because kia had agreed to fix the engines for the vehicles included in the suit. Kia has denied to cover our car under this special extended warranty which would include 10 years/120,000 miles now. We have been passed around and denied all the up to the corporate offices "escalation office", which has ultimately told us that we have been denied and have reached the highest office available for complaint/appeals and there is nothing that we do any longer. We still owe almost $10,000 on this car, which will be a total loss if it isn't fixed under extended warranty or by us at a cost of almost $5000.

51 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 06/10/2012

I pulled a trailer for the first time on this date. The truck only made it 10 miles, and lost all power, and I barely made it off of the freeway. Brought it to the dealer, and they found the spark plugs blew apart. All they did was change the spark plugs and sent me on my way. On July 13th, I towed my camper, which was lighter than the last trailer I pulled. This time, about 6 miles into the trip, the engine completely let go on the highway. I had to get across 4 lanes of traffic with no power and a camper in-tow. Waited at the side of the road for an hour and a half before kia sent a tow vehicle. Discovered all 4 spark plugs were destroyed, and a hole in cylinder 3. Kia will not warranty it, blaming the engine failure on the camper not having trailer brakes(completely absurd). The first failure in June, the trailer weighed 500lbs more, and had trailer brakes. Kia does not want to admit fault for this extremely dangerous fault in their engine. The vehicle is rated for 2,000lbs towing capacity, and both trailers were well under the limit. My camper is only 1,155lbs. Complete engine failure on the highway put me and my entire family in danger twice. This is un-acceptable. This was a loaded sx awd. (turbocharged).

The vehicle was restarted and resumed normally yet the failure recurred at various speeds. There was a separate occasion when the engine failed to restart. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer eight times where they were unable to locate the failure. The passenger side wiring harness was cleaned but to no avail. The failure persisted in which there was no resolution. The failure mileage was 60,000. Updated 05/05/lj updated 05/09/11.

58 Engine Failure problem of the 1997 Kia Motor Sportage

This vehicle has been a problem from the day that I purchased it, engine failed and it was in shop for two months, transmission failed, the rear end failed, the fuel economy switch failed, then the transmission failed again, and the transmission has failed three times since July, 2000. I have had two near accidents on the interstate due to these mechanical failures. I have tried for over two years to contact a kia represenative but they will not respond to my complaints . The dealer is no help, they only give you the delay game. I have a vehicle that is no good, it is unsafe to drive and a danger to put on the road. It continually has problems and I am having to make payments on it. Please help.
