36 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 06/23/2008

My 2004 hse Freelander with only 35,000 miles on it, this vehicle has been nothing but problems and it has been in the shop since June. '07 until Jan. '08 for a coolant leak that lead to entire engine change. The keyless entry stopped unlocking the doors behind the passanger seat. My back window regulators are broken and I cannot close this window. Land rover needs to focus more on quality.

37 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/29/2008

We bought a Land Rover Freelander 9 months ago from a used car dealership. 2 weeks ago we noticed the heating gage going up and down and we needed a lot of coolant. Yesterday, the engine failed and we were told we need a new engine. According to the mechanic it was a problem in the heating system because the coolant is leaking into an unknown area. Landrover says since we didn't buy it from them, they will not help us. In order to file a complaint, we must tow the car to the dealership, pay the dealership to examine the care and then want 2 to 6 months for an engine, possibly a transmission as well to be order. They are backordered nation wide. The car has on 40,000 miles and has had good maintenance regularly.

38 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/25/2008

Check engine light , ticking engine, antifreeze , oil leak, smelling coolant inside car and numerous other issues such as window regulator , wiper motor and rattling noises underneath car has been my complaints since Feb 13,2008. Parts were replaced that didn't correct the problem of the ticking engine, coolant leaks, smell of coolant inside car,and check engine light which always comes on a couple of hours after the dealer returns my car to me. Car was towed from freeway due to breakdown on the way home 15 minutes after picking car up from madison dealership for engine repair. Dealership stated that this was due to an oil seal/oil plug and it was not their fault although they just finished working on the engine. I did not have my car for a total of 30 days not including the prior visits where they took almost 2 weeks to diagnose the problem. I was charged for a rental car during this period. Milwaukee dealership claimed they corrected the engine problem on 3 different visits which I paid $600. 00 for a timing belt which never corrected the problem along with a $100. 00 deductible for using the warranty. The parts replaced on the vehicle is as follows; manifold assy. Motor assy for wiper blades, window regulator, timing belt and differential front mounting which did not resolve rattling noise underneath car. Milwaukee dealership has also attempted to correct these same problems with no success. The coolant leak is still apparent and the check engine light is on again. The only thing the dealership can tell me is to monitor how many times I have to replace coolant. In the mean time, they have sent me home with a car that has a check engine light on and a disappearing coolant problem. I guess they will continue giving me the runaround until my warranty expires Aug 2,2008 just as many others has reported they did to them. Please help!!!!!.

39 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/23/2008

2004 Land Rover Freelander. I have had repeated problems with this car (coolant leaks) and have taken the vehicle to my local Land Rover dealership for service to no avail. I keep being told there is no leak. There is I keep losing coolant. I see on the internet that I am one of thousands of consumers who have been cheated by lr. The Freelander is a lemon and their appears to be thousands of us consumers who have had to experience the disappoint and costs incurred due to the faulty manufacturing by Land Rover. I request that your office investigate this immediately. The Freelander should be recalled!! I thank you in advance for investigating this matter. Check the internet you will find thousands of unhappy consumers of lr as myself.

40 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/15/2008

I got a Land Rover Freelander with 51,996 miles on it. I had it in the shop over 25 time in 10 months! all for the same reason. The engine stopped on me going 30mph and I found out the engine had blown for the same reason I had it fixed for the last 25 times.

41 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 03/24/2008

Land rover Freelander: the vehicle is a time bomb, at some point early in the vehicles life it will die on you while driving. . . . You then have a very short time to get of the road before it locks up. It then becomes a money pit!!!.

42 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 03/10/2008

I have a 2002 landrover Freelander. I just had a head gasket replaced at 80,000 miles. And now I think the transmission is going out. There are to many complaints on the Land Rovers for something not to be done. They need to be held responsible. These cars are not safe.

43 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/21/2007

Our lr first started overheating, taking about 10 to 15 minutes to cool down and when checked the coolant would be empty. I was then constantly having to fill it with coolant. I had it in to the shop 3 times for this same problem when after the second time they apparently fixed it so well they caused the coolant to leak into the engine and that caused the traction control to go out and then they said that was because the engine was now gone. Although we did actually drive it into carmax who then drove it to Land Rover. Land rover said the engine was shot and would need a new one. Our Freelander sat for 9 months with no new engine in sight. Although, warranty money was waiting to pay for it. Land rover took no responsibility in this and kept telling us and carmax that an engine was being reconfigured and would arrive in March, no July, then don't know when. Finally carmax paid the Freelander off for us and we bought something else. Land rover had also taken the old engine or the complete guts of the vehicle and laid the back seats down and threw the guts in the passenger part of the vehicle and left the car sitting unlocked on their lot for I don't know how long. We found it this way on a very hot summer day. Land rover doesn't care about their customers and doesn't do anything to help this situation. My understanding is that this is the fate for all Freelanders not just mine.

44 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/07/2007

We had just had our car in for servicing prior to a longer drive. While we were driving at highway speeds, our car accelerated without warning. The engine "revved" without any increase in speed. Once home, contacted our dealership where they proceeded to tell us that we would require a new transmission when we were only just out of warranty. They could not tell us what the cause of the problem was - only that it would cost upwards of $6000 to fix it by replacing the transmission. Prior to this, our dealership had our Land Rover Freelander for 4 weeks fixing other known problems such as the coolant system, again, just out of warranty for a fix of over $3000; once it was returned, the engine light came back on immediately (I. E. On our way home from picking the car up) - I returned immediately with the vehicle and was told that the engine block had been cracked which would require an additional $2000 plus in repairs (although they did discount us on this repair - more than likely because they had caused it). We have had nothing but difficulty with this vehicle. The issues began almost immediately from the date of purchase. Additionally, the Land Rover service people are less than helpful. I believe they are deceptive, arrogant, and lack the knowledge and skill required to fully service a vehicle. I have gone through three different dealerships to locate someone whom I trust to service this vehicle; finally, now that the care is out of warranty we will be going to a local repair shop where they were able to walk me through what was wrong with the vehicle and fix the problem.

45 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/05/2007

'03 Land Rover Freelander s - fall '07 - losing coolant and vehicle was not running properly. Took it to mechanic and the heater core had to be replaced and check engine light turned off. $600 w/ parts and labor. Winter '07 -took to rover dealer to check it out b/c it just wasn't running well. It wouldn't accelerate properly and would often not start on first few tries. Dealer ran diagnostic and said it needed a new intake manifold, a few connector components and a new timing belt - total of over $2000 with parts and labor. Elected to have my father do the work and he ordered the parts online and installed himself taking many hours to figure it out. His cost was about $900 and he opted not to change the timing belt.

49 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/23/2007

Land rover deceived, defrauded, and continues to victimize me - an owner of a 2003 Land Rover Freelander. Land rover diagnosed and acknowledged that the car they sold to me - the 2003 Freelander has significant engine damage caused by a defect in the design of the engine and other key operating units - coolant and oil systems, brakes, etc. The defect in the design of the engine in the 2003 Land Rover Freelander ultimately renders the car inoperable and results in total engine failure. Land rover refuses to recall this car off the us highways, and disclose the engine's defect to all 2003 Freelander owners. Land rover advised that it is a matter of time before my car fails completely, and I should not be driving this car. It is now parked in my driveway. The car has been serviced by Land Rover numerous times (related to the problems with the defect in the design of the engine, coolant and oil systems, brakes, etc. ) since I purchased the car. Land rover is and was aware of this defect in the 2003 Freelander's engine, but failed to disclose it to me. Land rover has discontinued manufacturing the Freelander models, therefore, not able to replace the defective engine with a new one as they state when you contact the headquarters. I last took the car to Land Rover parsippany in October 2007 where it stayed for approximately 7 weeks. Land rover parsippany further tampered with the car (it was making cranking noise in the engine when I picked it up in January - this noise was not there when I took the car to Land Rover in October - and they acknowledge this), and ordered me to pick it up from their lot after they refused to fix my car and make me whole. I have been mistreated, and lied to by Land Rover representatives thus causing me a lot of financial loss, physical and emotional trauma. I do not have the use of my 2003 Freelander, but still make payments on this car. I struggle every day to get around since January 2008.

60 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/22/2007

I bought my 02 Freelander in March 06 with my fema money. I desperately needed a car after mine flooded in katrina. Since my purchase I have had nothing but trouble with this lemon. I see from the many blogs that I am not the only one. Between me and my now expired warranty we've spent well over 5,000. Please tell me if there is anything I can do. It has several problems now and is undrivable. I still owe over 7,000 on it.

61 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/01/2007

I have a Land Rover freeland that started having coolant leakage in early February of 2007. I tried to get the car in to get fixed and was put off by Land Rover until my warranty expired. They never fixed it. It leaks coolant constantly, it looses power, it over heats and steams, the coolant is an oily brown color no matter how many times I flush it. This car has a bad head gasket I'm afraid and I've read about and know many people with the exact same problem. I've replaced the reservoir bottle, flushed the coolant, replaced the thermostat and nothing fixes the problem. I had a month long battle with Land Rover to fix it and they refused. This entire engine needs to be recalled, this is a terrible car and a hazard on the road, I'm scared every time I see a Freelander that it's going to blow something and kill someone on the freeway, Land Rover should be ashamed and all the cars should be recalled.

62 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/25/2007

I have a landrover Freelander 2002. I have had the car for a year. 2 months after getting the car it needed a head gasket with only 87,000 miles on it. From what I've heard mine lasted longer than most. I had to put 2000,00 into it right after putting 4000,00 as a down payment. The repair shop said that landrover recommended it get a new motor but the warranty comp. Wouldn't cover it. A new motor cost about 7000,00. This is going on with hundreds of landrovers, because of the material the motor is made out of. I cant think of one good reason why there should not be a recall on this car. People are making payments on cars they cant even drive. We may be forced to do a voluntary repo so we can get another car. Peoples lives are being destroyed because of this car. Something has to be done.

63 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/15/2007

65 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/13/2006

04 Land Rover Freelander cooling system engine overheat @ 29,000 miles with coolant leaking . They said because of thermostat malfunction. I just noticed that I have to put coolant every 600 miles because it is totally empty and there are some hairline cracks on the reserve. Now I bring it back to dealer to check it.

66 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/21/2006

My 2002 Land Rover Freelander had an engine failure in September 2006. This is a common problem with this make of vehicle and cost me $6,849. 61 to replace since I was out of warranty. Other popular problems with this vehicle are problems with the window motors. My sunroof and two backdoor windows would not operate properly. I could only pay to repair the backdoor windows at the expense of $904. 88. Also, the drivers side door lock does not function properly, but I was not able to have that fixed.

67 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

I purchased a new 2004 Freelander in February 2004. I have serviced my vehicle at the required intervals with Land Rover. At 48,500 miles, my truck started to overheat. I took it to my local mechanic who looked it over and was puzzled. He couldn't see where the coolant had gone and suggested I bring the car to my local Land Rover dealer in new rochelle. I had the car towed to Land Rover and the technicians there fixed the so-called problem. The technicians informed me that a cracked reservoir and a malfunctioning fan were found. 5,000 miles later (now that the warranty had expired) the car begins to overheat. I went ahead and had the thermostat replaced by my local mechanic with a Land Rover thermostat (where was I to tow my car at 9 pm?) , 2 weeks later it overheated again. I took it the dealership once again. They told me that coolant had leaked into the engine and that I needed a new engine. 6,800 dollars. A 3 year old car needs a new engine? I've been notified by Land Rover north America that they will not compensate any of the money because the car is out of warranty. This is not the first time this has happened with the Freelander. A business associate of mine leased a 2003 Freelander from Land Rover paramus and at 48,000 miles the same exact thing happened. There's an apparent problem with the head gasket with the Freelander. It's all over the web ! every Freelander suffers from the same problem. I believe I should not be held responsible for a defective engine and that the manufacturer should be totally responsible. I would appreciate any assistance concerning this matter. It's costing me time at work, and plenty in rental car fees.

68 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2005 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/18/2006

I bought 2005 landrover Freelander January 27th, 2006 with 3770 mileage and about a week later, car was overheated and steam came out from the engine. Dealer service center said cooling fan was not working, so they changed it,and everything will be ok, but yesterday midnight, car got overheated again current mileage is only 5400. I got stuck on the freeway with steamy engine. Service center said they will fix it, but I can not feel secured to drive that car. I complained that and try to get refund since it has been only 3 months, but they said they can give me 5000 lower price than the purchase price. What can I do? I cannot get a full refund?.

69 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/27/2006

On two separate occasions, one days after my car was cleared for a second time by a Land Rover dealer. My car went into 'limited perfomance mode' while I was commuting to work. . . . I was in the high speed lane and the middle lane and my car would not accelerate about 20 mph. I had to call 911 on the second occasion as it happened because I was in the merge of 2 highways in the evening. My car also had downshifting problems where the downhill decent control would come on out of nowhere causing my car to buck forward and drop down to second gear. The dealership again said that is could not be duplicated 3 times before they finally found something and then it kept happening anyway. My transmission let go on the highway at just over 60k miles and then my engine lining shifted spewing oil only about 2 months after. The dealerships are well aware of the poor quality of these vehicles and yet, they sell and re-sell them to the unsuspecting consumers. I have a lawyer and will be suing lr for everything I can, including lost wages, emotional and physical distress, and anything else that can be tied into my two year nightmare. I strongly suggest you get these vehicles off the road before someone gets killed. Thank you.

70 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/10/2006

Engine coolant, transmission failure overheated, leaking fluids. Dealership replaced transmission when vehicle overheated. Paid 2500 for a new transmission then dealer indicated that this vehicle needed more servicing unrelated to the transmission for another 3000. 00. Dealer was negligent when fixing transmission and caused further damage.
