1 Vehicle Overheat problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/04/2011

Bought car used in fall 09, had several what seemed like normal wear and tear repairs. There was no warranty on it as I bought it from another owner. Early may '11 the oil light came on but I didn't know what it was. I arrived at my destination. On the way home it came on again and as I was 2 blocks away from home the car just slowed and came to a stop. This turned into a 2+ month stinch in the shop, with the engine needing to be rebuilt. This was done by my mechanic. I wished I had read the info listed here prior to the purchase or even a year ago. Last winter the coolant constantly needed to be replaced like every few days and the car was over heating. My mechanic said the hoses needed to be replaced. Between then and this winter both were replaced and now I'm experiencing the car over heating when its full with coolant, having problems with it starting, there not being enough power to get it up a hill etc.

2 Vehicle Overheat problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 06/04/2010

I bought this vehicle in April 2010 and have had nothing but problems ever since. It had 79,600 miles on it when I bought it and was told by the dealer that it had just recently had a transmission replaced. They didn't even know how to open the hood - passenger side. 2 months later and it dies on me going down the street. I pull over and antifreeze is running everywhere. The thermostat housing had separated in two and caused the car to overheat. I called the closest Land Rover dealer and he quoted me $800 to fix it. I searched on the internet and found the parts to fix it for $80. I replaced the thermostat and housing (1 piece) and got it running again. Since then, the sunroof has quit, both rear windows have quit and the rear sliding window won't open by key. The driver side windshield defroster will not work (only the passenger side) and I have never had an owners manual. The drivers side door will not unlock with the keyless entry either. Now I get to the engine - it started running real rough and lost alot of power. I had a local mechanic run codes on it and this is what he found: p0303 - #3 cylinder misfire; p1319 - misfire emission relevant; p1471, 1472 - vis motors evap purge valve flow blocked; p1475 - leak detection pump leakage diagnostic pump reed switch did not close; p 1775 - gearbox fault transmission system mil fault. I asked his opinion and he told me it was probably not worth fixing. He didn't even know what all of this meant. He was just going to start tearing it down and see what he could fix. I can't afford that. I live paycheck to paycheck and I really thought that Land Rover had a good name and reputation. I emailed and called them and have had no luck to this point. Everything I have seen on this model proves that it is a vehicle that should be put to rest. I am looking for any help I can get.

3 Vehicle Overheat problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/10/2008

My car was overheating, had $1200 worth of repairs; now they are telling me it needs a new engine for $9000. Through the internet I have learned how many complaints there are with the 2002 Land Rover Freelander - basically, after 70,000 miles it needs a new engine, this will be followed with a new transmission. My car has 75,000 miles and is sitting at the dealer, Land Rover "volunteered" to pay 20-percent; the Land Rover dealer "volunteered" to pay 20-percent. . . Leaving me with 60-percent. They are aware of the problem - and will not do the right thing.

4 Vehicle Overheat problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/13/2007

Complete engine failure on 10/13/2007 at just over 34,000 miles. Two weeks prior car was serviced due check engine light on/car overheating. Service dept. Claimed due to fluid leakage and claimed it was repaired. Even though car is under warranty Land Rover has declined to cover engine replacement. They want me to pay them over $6400 to replace engine.

5 Vehicle Overheat problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/02/2007

We purchased a 2002 Land Rover Freelander. The car has had numerous occasions of overheating, losing coolant and oil and we have now been told a new engine is needed. The car owner was also told at 50,756 miles that a new transmission was necessary. Apparently Land Rover is aware of this recurring problem with this vehicle, but is doing nothing to correct the problems. There has been occasions when the car stops or overheat is causing potential safety concerns/problems for the car occupants as well as other drivers.

6 Vehicle Overheat problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/05/2006

Vehicle was brought into the dealership multiple times for overheating. After the 4th time the car overheated and I lost all power as it caught on fire. I had to make a dangerous lane change across 4 lanes of highway while losing power. The engine was replaced in 2006 but the dealership said it was just over warranty. The vehicle still is having problems starting and is being towed to the mechanic again today.
