36 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 11/10/2003

The transmission is totally shot and I will have to replace it at a cost of about $2500 while I hear that if Mazda had just informed the owners earlier they could have added about $100 cooling kit and saved all the cost and hassle.

37 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/30/2003

I have a 1996 Mazda 626 with 80,000 miles on it. The transmission has failed on it, and I am told by the dealer that it needs to be replaced and a cooling unit has to be installed. Apparently, this is a well known problem by the Mazda and they failed to warn the owners to install this cooling unit to prevent transmission problems.

38 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/22/2003

Od off light on our 2000 Mazda 626 lx started flashing. Took the car to a local dealer (berge Mazda in mesa az) and they diagnosed a code p1718- transmission overheating. They recommend to install a transmission cooler kit and perform a transmission service to correct the problem(estimate given -$1014. 00-way too expensive!!!). Went to another dealership (earnhardt's Ford/Mazda in chandler az) to get a second opinion and they made the same recommendations. Both dealers stated that Mazda issued a technical service bulletin about this problem (cd4e transmission) and addressed this issue with a transmission cooling kit install. We decided to have the work done at earnhardt's (total cost $344. 00-more reasonable estimate). We purchased this vehicle at hertz car sales in Nov 2001 with about 30,000 miles on it. Shortly after we got it, the transmission was replaced by the dealer(berge Mazda) because it was slipping. Since the car was still under the manufacturer's warranty(3 yr/50,000 miles), we didn't have to pay the cost of repairs. Our car currently has 51000 miles and since it's out of warranty, we had to shoulder the cost this time. I have been researching the internet and have found numerous complaints about Mazda transmission failures. I believe that since Mazda was aware of this problem, there should have been a recall for this type of transmission and remedied it by installing the transmission cooling kit free of charge to consumers.

39 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/23/2003

I have a 1997 Mazda 626 and with any warning the transmission has failed and the dealer is asking 2,400. 00 to fix it and I think it is wrong that they haven't came forth to tell anyone about the cooling system that is soppose to fix it.

40 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/28/2002

Consumer states that the transmission fluid started to spill out from the hose that you add the fluid through. Contacted dealer and the dealer is not willing to do anytthing. Nlm.

41 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/01/2002

No transmission shops will work on the car because they've already tried to fix several and they keep coming back. Apparently the cooling system that Mazda/Ford installed into the transmisison wasn't enough, so after 60k miles transmission burned up.

42 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/05/2002

Transmission problem with a automatic 1996 Mazda 626 2. 0 liter 4 cyl. We bought the car with something wrong with the transmission but we didn't know what exactly what the problem was. So we bring it home and it wouldn't go into gear so we decide we have to rebuild the transmission. We get on the internet and search for any recalls on the tranny or the car and on some websites we found that the tranny is too small for that particular make of car and it tends to overheat and found a TSB that said the car needed a tranny cooling system b/c when it would overheat it would just crash, and we also saw that a lot of people were having this same problem and that they have had their tranny replaced 2 or 3 times b/c of the overheating, and I would love to know that Mazda would stand by their product and help everyone out that is having this problem b/c we think this should have been done right the first time.

45 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/04/2001

I recently experienced problems with the transmission on my 1997 Mazda 626 after only 61,406 miles. Luckily I purchased an extended warranty at the time of the original purchase of the car. However, upon replacing my transmission with a "remanufactured" one I have again experienced transmission problems. It is obvious that there are some serious problems with the engineering of the transmissions that went into this model year car. I have read similar complaints on consumer complaint boards on the internet. What has exasperated this situation even more is when I brought my car in for repairs the dealership (actually two different ones) recommended that I purchase a transmission cooling kit for about $100. 00 as they stated that the transmission just couldn't take the heat of the deep south (I live in the new orleans area). This really irked me. I couldn't believe that these two dealerships were trying to get me to pay for this kit when it is obviously a problem with the engineering of the transmissions or associated electrical components. I called Mazda USA customer service and they said that they would not pay for this kit installation and they did not think it was at all needed. In other words there is no problem with transmission overheating even in the south according to Mazda motors north America. I would like to know how many other Mazda owners (especially those in the south) have been told by their dealerships that their transmission woes can be solved by purchase and installation of this cooling kit. I would hope that no one has been persuaded into purchasing one of these kits when its not their problem to pay for- it is the dealership's or Mazda motors responsibility to repair this problem!.

46 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 11/23/2000

Od on/off light started to flash on highway, then speedometer and tachometer fell to 0, smoke went from the hood, and all transmission oil leaked away.

47 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/15/1998

Transmission locked up while driving at 45 mph , vehicle came to a dead stop with engine running. Front wheels locked up, and would not move due to torque converter failure. Engine would stall during right turns, dealer reset computer, then engine light illuminated, dealer stated the torque converter clutch was slipping, transmission locked up on the way to a dealership for replacement of torque converter clutch, a new transmission was installed and 20 miles later the od off light illuminated, vehicle started smoking and losing power, this time dealer stated the cooling system in the radiator was not large enough to cool the transmission, an external cooling system was installed, now transmission needs replaced again, consumer requests that vehicle be replaced or repurchased by the dealer.

48 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Transmission fluid leaking from vehicle. Tookehicle to dealer, and dealer indicated transmission was burning itself up.
