No events lead up to my failure. We own and have a well maintained Mazda 626 and it stopped driving the other day. No warning or problems prior to this - just stopped running. While we were driving the vehicle it started to not accelerate or shift erratically and roughly.

Mine car is an eight years old nice little car. It runs pretty well despite the fact that the transmission fluid get very dirty every 10,000 to 12,000 miles despite old two-year/30,000-mile interval that used to be considered the norm for transmission service is good for the 626; I have to do a full transmission flush to keep it running. Yes, it's expensive for the tranny. Recently, the real problem has appeared. My idle rpm is around 700, when I shift the gear in to reverse, it didn't shift properly. I feel nothing at all. I mean when a car sitting on a flat surface, it doesn't move even a little bit. If I gently step on the gas pedal till the rpm hit around 1000, there is a huge pumping on my transmission and the car inconsistently move backward. If I let the pedal go and hit and then release the brake, it stand till again. I brought it to the shop and have them run the diagnose test. They said there is nothing wrong with it. They have to look inside. It's too problematic. The repair cost is estimated around 2,000. Which is more than the value of my car. And the transmission is not even a new one, it's a rebuilt which is likely to be broken again. I think there is a defects in the tranny system.

My transmission is not functioning properly.
Transmission in 97 626 Mazda 4cyl locked up when turning cruise control off on interstate causing the front wheels to lock up and sliding the vehicle to a stop the trans is no good now . Should the manufacture be responsible to fix the problem.
Flashing "o/d off" light, rough shifting, jerking, sluggish acceleration nearly resulting in t-bone collision. Incidents too recent for repair actions to be attempted, but consistent with other reports regarding this particular year/make/model.
I have a 2000 Mazda 626 and it keeps slipping into and out of drive, revving the rpms. A mechanic drove it, analyzed it and says it needs a new transmission.
We recently bought this 2000 Mazda 626 used for our twin boys, as their first car. We had it checked out by our local mechanic and he found a few normal things wrong with it and I was okay with those things. The problem I am having now is this; the o. D. Warning light now comes on and flashes. It had never occurred before. This began while driving on the highway for the first time (we never had a reason to go onto the highway) on this day we did and all of a sudden the car begins to DE accelerate and the tach needle start bouncing around and the car does not want to accelerate. The o. D. Light came on and now comes on very often at all times and roads. The next day I took it to my local Mazda dealer to have it checked out. They found two codes wrong with it ( p1746 and p1783 ). They reset the computer and told me that if the problem persist, that I would need to replace the transmission, they also told me that it is not a repair that is covered by any warranty because the warranty has already expired. I have gone on the internet and have found that this a very common problem with this vehicle and any vehicles with this transmission. It is obviously a defect in the transmission. I have not repaired it yet, because I can not afford to repair it. If this problem occurs so often why doesn't Mazda declare it a recall and fix the problem.
I am truly disappointed in the service and quality received by Mazda. When I bought my 2002 Mazda 626 in 2005 I took my car in approximately 1 week later to let them know that my engine shakes. Mechanic says that's the way it is supposed to me (although no other car that I've been in did that). As time went on & things got worse we discovered that our engine mounts were broken. We seem to have to change our brake pads every 3 months. We took our car in today because our car was "jumping", find out our transmission is shot. Im a single mom and do not have a 6 figure job , but has had to dish out $ all the time for the repairs on this car. It is merely a work vehicle and I don't travel much other than that. I've been put behind on bills and now is told to replace my transmission it will be $2000. It is frustrating. Its no wonder why so many people love toyotas and hondas.
Automation transmission went out on car. Have found out sense this happened that it happens alot on the Mazda 626s because it uses the Ford cd4e transmission that Ford has issues with.

Problems with transmission. The dealership advised to go for rebuilt one and charged me over $3000 with taxes. I think Mazda should take some responsibility looking at so many other incidences that I found on the web.
Mazda 626 was built with a bad transmission that has had problems since 50,000 miles. The car started forcefully shifting, and now will have problems accelerating. This happens every time I drive it since 50000 miles with conditions getting worse. Nothing has been done yet to fix the problem accept my mechanic says I need to either rebuild this transmission or put in a new transmission.
1. Transmission suddenly quit. 2. Driver and vehicle were stranded in unsafe area. 3. Replaced transmission a two thousand dollar cost.
Transmission problems with a code of p1744. Dealer advised to go for rebuilt one and charged me over $3000 with taxes. I think Mazda should take some responsibility looking at so many other incidences that I found on the web.
2000 Mazda 626 atx cd4e failure @ 88k miles- then rebuilt - another failure @ 121k miles.
I have a 2001 Mazda 626 auto trans with 80,000 miles on it. For the most part my commutes would be an average 10 miles each way daily. Last six months the commute was about 25 miles each way with a combination of highway and city driving. On the days leading up to the incident, the car seemed to jerk into the higher gears - that was the first sign of trouble. On the day of the incident, it started up fine but would not move forward when gears are engaged in "drive" mode. It would move a little in the first gear if I pressed down the accelerator but never shifted into the higher gear. I did not want to burn out my engine - so I had the car towed to the repair shop. The mechanic checked it out and said that they would have to rebuild my transmission or replace it with a remanufactured piece. He also stated that it may be difficult to get a good working transmission from another car as this transmission (la4a-el by Mazda or its equivalent cd4e by Ford) have been known to have problems. So now I am looking at a high repair bill and since this is a one car family, an extended period of having to arrange alternative transportation. This is the third Mazda (929, mx6 and now 626) in the family. Never had issues with the previous cars.
As well as other 626's my transmission has blown. Was driving it, down the road, then the check engine light flashed about 7 times, and it revved, then went down and revved with the check engine light. Took it to aamco transmissions and they drove it and looked and told me that its shot. Of course this all happens after spending $1200 for a dealer only catalytic converter. Why would anyone buy this car knowing that they fall apart, and have dealer only parts!?.
1999 Mazda 626 automatic transmission problems has been rebuilt two times in less than one year. Now it is out again I have too much money in it,too quit now. Some one needs to do something to help.

While driving home, automatic transmission wouldn't shift into 2nd or 4th. Transmission was rebuilt at approx. 98,000 miles. At a cost of $2,800. 00. Car now has approx. 160,000 miles and transmission needs rebuilt again. Have heard alot of complaints about this problem. Car is otherwise in great shape, can't afford a new car so I guess I'm stuck again paying to have a transmission repaired that Mazda knows is a major problem and they refuse to do anything about it. Can we all get a little help with this problem??.
The vehicle jolts when coming off the highway which I was informed was due to the overheating transmission. After about two hours of highway driving I had to pull to the side of the highway because the vehicle became unstable.

Transmission on 1999 Mazda 626 2. 0 automatic failed and needed to be re-built. The odometer reading was 114,200 miles. Re-build occurred in September 2007.
Failure of automatic transmissions at an early mileage range. Either have to replace or have transmission rebuilt.
The automatic transmission in my car is broken.
The vehicle was parked. Went back to vehicle cranked it up, and would not go into reverse or drive. The shifter would move but tranny did nothing like it was in neutral. Tranny worked fine before it was parked.
We have a 2000 Mazda 626 and the transmission went out last year, we paid over 4000 to have another transmission installed and this one went out this year. I am very upset because we spent a lot of money, we went to our Mazda dealer here in champaign and they kept telling us it was a seal, until finally they told us it was the transmission. It is quite disturbing to find so may complaints online regarding the Mazda transmission and to realize that the vehicle has a Ford engine, we did not know this, we would have never bought a Ford anything! I understand that Mazda has known about this problem for awhile and did nothing to try to help the consumer.
1998 Mazda 626 2. 0l automatic tranny issues. Car has 118k miles and the tranny is needing a rebuild. Looked it up and several people are complaining about the cd4e Ford number or the la4a-el Mazda number tranny. . Updated 01/02/08. Updated 12/12/07.
Transmission are bad in 1998 Mazda 626.
My 2001 Mazda 626 lx would jerk extremely hard when starting off until speeds reached around 25+mph this happened since the day the car was purchased even after taking the car to the dealer for repairs the car still jerked when increasing speeds. Just recently while going to work the car would not move in reverse and barley move in drive after getting half way to work I stopped at a stop sign and the car would not move only rev up that's when I called a towing service to drop my car off to a garage after the mechanics heard my problem they gave me some startling news that most of the 4cycle Mazda 626s have had problems with transmissions part I had to get was a new transmission.
We bought this car for our son in 2005 with about 55,000 miles on it. It now has 120,000 miles and is in need of its 4th transmission (rebuilt)! it is also on its second engine. I've never heard of anything this bad. Has Mazda done anything to correct this?.
Automatic transmission locks up, burns up and car no longer moves.
2001 Mazda 626, wouldn't shift into gear, had the linkage cable repaired twice. Now at 149,000 miles the car won't shift into reverse and the od light keeps flashing on and off. We are having it towed (this is the 2nd tow bill) to a transmission shop tomorrow and having the transmission repaired. It will cost between 1500 & 1700 to repair. Updated 12-12-07. Updated.
Transmission on my 1998 Mazda 626. I've purchased the vehicle in sept. 2000. I have replaced the transmission twice. The most recent replacement was July 2006. This car has had numerous transmission issues.
Let me begin by saying that I wish I had pulled up this web site before I purchased this automobile. Apparently, other consumers have voiced their many complaints to no avail, so please forgive me if I sound a bit let down and disappointed by this great department of our american government. Mainly, your just wanting me to state the problem, and I say, the problem has already been stated, over and over again. But, if I must keep up this ridiculous game of play for many more years or until a person is killed, I will. The #### transmissions ####in this ##### ### Mazda 626, you have been told, the manufacture knows, the people that have been ######over by the corporation of ####### greedy ### ##### men know it, so lets just say we hold your pay check until you can get off your ###### ### and get use some relief with this multi-million dollar corp that is not stepping up to the plate and taking care of the ####### lemons they sold on american soil. I believe this will be resolved, I have a 16 year old that I purchased this car for and I am not going to keep quite about this. You can see this is clearly a problem that should have already been fixed, and not at the consumers expense. I am a divorced-single mom that has not received child support in six years, I manage on my own and will not let big corps take my hard earned money to repair something that is crystal clear a defect on the makers part. . . . That being Mazda corporation. If my child's safety is as important to you as you want me to believe it is, then do the #### recall already. Time to make things right.
