There were no signs that the transmission would fail, after reading the forums, this is clearly an improperly designed transmission. If I would have read the forums before the failure I would have traded in the car while it had some value. Hopefully you are reading this before your 626 tranny fails. The estimates for the repair were $3500 and there was $1800 left on the note. We only got $500 for the trade. The repair didn't make sense after reading about all the tranny problems this car has.

The Mazda 626 lx cd4e transmission will fail, because their poor design, no matter how you do. This transmission is on Mazda 626 on year 1994-2002.
The transmission failed 2 times both times replaced. . .
Mazda 626 year 2001 transmission failure, rpms went to 4000 by itself odometer light came on and flashed on dashboard instrument panel and car jerked badly. Had to have vehicle towed on 7/6/2007, and had the transmission fluid changed. Service technician found nothing wrong. Then on 7/9/2007 car wa s doing exactly the same thing. Had to have towed again to a different service institution awaiting results of estimate.
2000 Mazda 626 lx 4-cyl Mazda is experiencing jerking or gear shifting problem. Took car in to two different Mazda shops-on five separate occasions-within a 60 day span- and the problem still was not corrected or diagnosed. Spent more than $1100 in repairs. Later researched on my own and found out that Ford transmission model cd4e used in my model car was possibly defective. After discussing with Mazda, I was told to just drive the car until the transmission completely failed and then have it replaced for $3000. I asked about having a transmission fan installed and was discouraged. Mazda service bulletin 005-02 instructs tech's to install a transmission fan if the customer complaint matches the bulletins description. I still was not given any information about this matter. How can Mazda get away with not taking responsibility for this? obviously there is a problem when thousands of messages on the message board all discuss the same issue. This is totally unethical and should be dealt with.
Driving in city traffic, parked in parking space, started to leave, pulled transmission shifter into reverse and car went forward. Could not get car to go in reverse so it was towed because of transmission failure, appears transmission must be replaced again.
1) events leading up to failure- normal non-daily usage. Maintenance on transmission within the previous year. Driving on PA turnpike, the transmission failed. 2)consequences- towed to transmission repair shop 3) what done to correct failure- total repair/rebuild of transmission. Cost over $2500. 00.
Two transmission failures. First at 76,000, 2nd at 101,000 miles. Had transmission rebuilt both times. There we 2 other 626's in transmission shop at the same time.
2000 Mazda 626 lx transmission failure after only 81,200 miles.

I had my first Mazda 626 transmission fail at 65,000 miles and I got it replaced, and then at 120,000 my transmission needed to be reaplced again. Therewas obviously something wrong with the Mazda 626 transmission, and there should be a recall and some financial compensation to all those who have had problems.
Automatic transmission failure on my 626 lx 2. 0 i4. These particular Ford transmissions are notorious for failing. It is verified to be a poor design and should be recalled.
Transmission failure, repaired recurring problem.
2002 Mazda 626 2. 0 w/ 39000 miles transmission has failed as reported by thousands on the net. Erratic hard shift occurred that almsot caused me to be in an accident. The od indicator began flashing right there after. I see no recalls for this although reported so so many times which I am very surprised. I see so many failures for this particular transmission . Very dissappointed! not many miles on this car.

The dollar figures are approximate. In February 2002 my daughter and I purchased a used 1999 Mazda 626 with an automatic transmission from wilson Dodge in torrington CT, 06790 for $9000. Part of the original purchase was a promise to install a sun roof for $500. The warranty was for 60 days or 2000 miles. We were told that the transmission on the car was its second. Under normal circumstances, I would take that as good news. A faulty one is replaced. How often does a transmission fail? in April (about 5 ã‚ 10 days after the warranty expired), the transmission needed replacing. The cost was estimated at $2300. After attempting to get this covered by the dealer in good faith, I authorized the installation of a rebuilt transmission. During this negotiation I had to endure with some snide remarks from some of the other sales people when I mentioned that another dealer would have taken care of this. Their response was ã‚yeah. They say that because they did not sell you the car!ã‚쳜 (the warranty on the rebuilt transmission was 1 year or 12,000 miles) the sunroof cost was forfeited leaving a balance of $1800. It was agreed that I would pay $300 a month until the balance was done. In April of 2007, the same issue occurred. The transmission failed. I did some research and found that Mazda had used an inferior transmission in its 626 models. . Read more...
I bought a 1996 Mazda 626 lx at approximately 82,000 miles the automatic transmission failed. I had rebuilt and now it is failing again. I cannot afford to keep fixing this problem that should have never been a problem to start with. The car has been well maintained under normal driving. I understand things will wear out but I have never had this problem with another car. I look on the internet for answers and find there are alot of people with the same complaint. Mazda needs to offer some responsibility to this. People work hard for their money. No one can afford to keep fixing this problem. Mazda should have never put a Ford transmission in this car that couldn't last.
Transmission failed twice. First time, just driving home from work and the second time after an hour highway drive.
2nd transmission failure of car. Happens at freeway speeds. In this case in traffic.
We are complaining about our 1998 Mazda 626 because the transmission failed with only 76,691 miles on the car. We are the original owners, so that mileage is correct. The total cost to have it rebuilt was $2,222. 87. Had this happened on the highway in heavy traffic, there certainly would have been a horrible accident with serious, if not fatal injuries. When we looked on the internet, we found many other people complaining of transmission problems. The problem, which Mazda is aware of is, it that they put a Ford transmission in the Mazda 626, but this transmission was meant for a smaller, lighter car, which is the reason for the overheating and eventual transmission failure. Their bulletin TSB# 0500502. Addresses this problem. Mazda has refused to replace these transmissions or compensate owners for this problem. Since this transmission failure happens very suddenly, it is only a matter of time before someone is gravely injured or killed in an accident on a busy highway. Please make Mazda do the right thing!.
2001 Mazda 626 ES v6 transmission failure at 78,000 miles.
1998 Mazda 626 transmission failure.
Mazda dealer diagnosis po732 and po734 internal transmission failure of 1998 Mazda 626.
Transmission failed, completely out of nowhere at 110,000 miles which is absolutely ridiculous. The transmission in the 2000 Mazda 626 should last a lot longer than that. It cost me $1600. 00.
Transmission failed, even after proper maintenance. 2nd transmission also failed 13 months later. 2001 Mazda 626 ES v6 2. 5l automatic transmission.
Transmission failure. . . Almost got into an accident on the freeway when my cars transmission failed. Luckily there was some traffic on the freeway. It has been doing that for the past month.
The transmission on my 1998 Mazda 626 with 89,000 miles just failed. According to my mechanic, a pump failed, and now my car has "no forward gears. " I have since learned that transmission failures are very common with this model, due to a design flaw of which Mazda is aware. I am currently having the transmission rebuilt, but I believe that Mazda should be held responsible for not recalling this model and correcting this problem.
My Mazda 626 ES, 2000 4 cylinder, need to have it's transmission replaced again. It broke one year ago in oct 2005 and this year it has broken once more and needs to be replaced. A yearly transmission change is overkill since I don't really drive in high stop and go situations, do due diligent maintenance, and do not drive in a manner which would tax the transmission. I believe, because of the second transmission failure, that is a product defect and causes an undue cost to consumers.
I own a 1998 Mazda 626 4 cylinder automatic transmission, the transmission has failed twice now, 1st repair was over $2,000 second repair will be just as much or more. After checking message boards on the internet and talking to transmission mechanics this is a huge problem with all these Ford/Mazda vehicles. With a failure rate this high and continual problems with these vehicles over several years some sort of recall needs to be made. There is also a danger factor with these transmissions, they have a huge tendency to over heat causing transmission fluid to boil over through the dipstick causing oil slicks on streets and highways.
Transmission failure on Mazda 626 ( again) second time.
: the contact stated the vehicle jerked when the accelerator pedal was depressed. At 50,000 miles the transmission was flushed and the fluid was black. The repair shop determined the seals on the gaskets were worn and the transmission needed to be replaced within 30,000 miles. Then, while traveling 40 mph, the transmission failed. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop who determined a rebuilt transmission needed to be installed.
