Mazda 626 owners have reported 16 problems related to transmission noise (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mazda 626 based on all problems reported for the 626.
On acceleration from being stopped the transmission would make a series of popping sounds. I took it to a mechanic and it was diagnosed to be a stretched drive chain in the transmission. Instances of high torque would cause the chain to skip past teeth, causing the popping noise. Due to the significant amount if problems that plague the cd4e transmission the entire unit was replaced.

Transmission making popping noises and lagging when making turns sounds horrible took to a mechanic he says he can fix it for 1700. 00 the transmission is bad. At a litttle over a 100 thousand miles it shouldn't need replaced. Ford should have to fix it. \.
The transmission in my 2002 Mazda 626 has began making noises now. It is clicking and jerking the car.
I have a 2002 Mazda 626 4cyl with 71,200 miles. I had just paid it off last month and come to find out my automatic transmission is going out on me. When accelerating it sounds as if gears are grinding. There was a couple times over the last 3 months my check engine light came on. I took it in and was told my battery connection was loose. Other than that there was no events leading up to this and happened all of a sudden. I have tried to change transmission fluid and the defected transmission is still in the vehicle continuing with grinding noise. Took it back in and told me the transmission is about to need rebuilding I have read many problems online dating back to 1996 regarding these 626's transmissions and here is another one.
Car have a knocking noise when you first take off. I sent it to the Mazda dealership and was told that it was my transmission and it would cost $4000. 00 to fix it. Then it took it in for a second opinion and was told it was my transmission also. I have done my research and notice that there are several complaints with the transmission. Over the years I have had the car I have taking it to the dealership to get repairs or the normal service. I think that it is very unusually that everyone is having the same problem, and that the Mazda dealership will not do anything to help with this problem. That is not professional for there company and they will lost business like that.

The contact owns a 1998 Mazda 626. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle began to automatically decelerate and a whining noise was heard coming from the transmission. The vehicle was towed to the mechanic who rebuilt the transmission. The current and failure mileages were 115,000. The consumer stated the cd4 transmission is used in a Mazda but made for a lighter vehicle but used in a Mazda 626. The consumer provided a copy of the repair invoice. Updated 09/05/07.

Wife was driving 75 mph on turnpike when she experienced a sudden transmission failure. There was no blinking lights, no noise, no anything to alert her that there was a potential problem. It just quit. Additionally, she was nearly involved in a high speed rear-end collision. Luckily, the individual behind her swerved and missed her car. She coasted to the shoulder where she was, again, nearly hit. Once stopped, she was unable to get the car to do anything in any gear. I had to travel over an hour to get her. It was 97 degrees and she was out in the middle of nowhere without any shelter except for her crippled vehicle. By the time I arrived, she had been in the heat long enough to start experience muscle cramps from electrolyte imbalance. What is it going to take to get someone to take responsibility for these issues? if she would have been hit, Mazda would have had a lawsuit on their hands. Is this what it is going to take? someone just needs to "cowboy up" and take responsibility. Additionally, I found out today that it will cost about $2000. 00 to fix. This is with a rebuilt transmission that supposedly has new parts and should not be subject to sudden failure like the oem transmissions (per the transmission supplier).

Caller had transmission worked on in Feb. 2003 because of noise she heard and now without warning the transmission broke down again while she was pulling out of a parking lot. The car can't be driven. Dealer said he has had problems with the tramsmission in other cars . Manufacturer has not been called yet.
Due to a low quality of my vehicle's transmission, it stopped on the road while I was driving. To illustrate, two days after purchasing a used 2001 Mazda 626, I noticed the transmission's weakness [no power, sluggish and unresponsive]. To claim, immediately I called to the Mazda-dealership sales department and explain the issues and I requested a repair or service. After a short conversation with the sales department for returning the car, mr. Dave wilson agreed to fix the problems, so he transferred my call to the dealerships service center manager, mr. Steve pollard. Based on my phone conversation with the manager, I went to the center to get the problems fixed. However, mr. Steve pollard by rejecting my request for a transmission-replacement, after a minor check, he fixed the audio-set and the steering wheel noise only. After picking up the car, I found the same weak transmission problem. I called back to the service center, and reminded the problem but the manager gave the same reply as before (there is no problem with the transmission). Then he asked: do you have an extended warranty? yes, I said. Then he added: don't worry and advised me to use it for any future major problems! as a result, I started to use and drive the powerless car with its weak transmission, not only carefully and stressfully for 2 years, but also full of anxiety and depression, until it stopped on the road completely. Unfortunately, after towing the car to the center for the same issue, transmission repair/replacement, later, I was reminded that the car is not under warranty any more, and I must pay a total cost of $3148. 46 from my pocket!!.

1) purchased a used '97 Mazda 626 dx, with 115000+ miles on it, supposedly in decent condition. The vehicle required a new fuel pump, so wasn't in any kind of road use until replacement. After replacing, the car seemed to work fine, but had odd 'jumps' forward in low speeds and stops (making me believe I would run stop signs). The dealership refused this lemon back. 2) after having the car 8wks, & only testing it around the block until all tests completed on the fuel system, it began to steam & make popping noises driving <400 yards at <20mph. After time, the noises got louder, the steam more widespread, and when the gas was pressed there was noticable lack of power for long seconds. Radiator was suspected due to the steam and power issues. During 1 test while braking it jumped/lurched sideways into a weak brick wall. 3) we are military mechanics, & we went through the entire fuel/transmission/oil systems by Mazda's own book. We even removed the engine, completely cleaned the old gunk out, & refilled fluid with only the finest fluids & cleansers, replacing entire sections of the engine with new parts, & still had the same problems. Per Mazda, they kept diagnosing anything from sensors/computer/regulators/hoses/fuel system issues. Extensive searches on-line turned up a horrifying list of 100's of websites that all blasted Ford's buying of Mazda & resultant lowering of quality. All sites reported transmission issues, similar 'diagnosis' from bad Mazda dealerships, & the end result being years of transmission replacements. Tranny's would break down at early mileages. Few reports of satisfaction from Mazda in replacing what had to be known as deffective trannys. The Mazda 626 (all versions '94 to '00) have seriously none-safe transmissions. When we fully eliminated the last of the possibilities, it was the transmission!!! Mazda refused to deal with this, nor issue a valid safety recall of 626's! spent over $2000 on new parts. This is a safety issue!!.
The contact stated there was an ongoing problem with the automatic transmission. It will make a loud noise followed by a complete shutdown. The transmission has been rebuilt three times. Several mechanics attempted to repair the vehicle, but agreed that the problem was the automatic transmission overdrive. The manufacturer has been contacted, and would not cover this under warranty. No further repairs have been made.
I have a 1999 Mazda 626 lx 2. 0 that I purchase in October 2001. What seemed to be a pretty reliable car turned to crap in 2003 when the transmission failed suddenly without much notice. I had the transmission rebuilt at aamco (the biggest rip offs on the planet next to Mazda) for $2650. 00. The car ran fine for 2 more years when once again with out much notice the car starts making a grinding noise in reverse, I took it back to aamco where they told me that I once again needed a replacement and that my extended warranty just ran out "go figure". So here I am left with this car that I owe $1500. 00 on and I need $2000. 00 worth of work. I come to find out that I am one of many with the same problem with this car. Thanks Mazda, after much research I bought a Honda a much more reliable car.
While traveling on highway consumer heard a loud clinking noise coming from underneath hood area, vehicle shut down, and would not restart. Dealership is aware of problem. Consumer stated the vehicle did start back up, but would not foward or backward, consumer stated the transmission was replaced about a year ago.
Transmission had to be rebuild twice within two months, it was causing vehicle to make noise/ shutter, and jump from high to second gear while driving. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.

The contact complained about vehicle problems on February 27, 2001, when driving at 60 mph the vehicle shook. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The contact stated transmission needed to be replaced and the dealer replaced it. The contact stated on March 15, 2005 the engine had to be replaced because it was running hot, the engine was replaced by a local mechanic. There was no warning and no noise. The head gasket and alternator failed. Updated 11/16/05.
Brake failure- purchased used care 6/98, replaced brake pads 10/98, brakes failed 6/8/99 and had to replace brake pads and rotors (front) after accident. Transmission problems- the car began to jump while accelerating from 0-30mph, so I pulled over and parked (7/20/99) and when I put the car in drive it would not go. I had the car towed to a mechanic who told me that I was having transmission problems and advised me to drive the car w/the overdrive off and that is the only way the car moves in drive. I have been having problems with the hearing knocking noises when turning the steering wheel, and my mechanic told me that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. Please advise me, because these are very expensive repairs for a car that does not even have 70k miles. Does the manafacturer have any responsibility, because it appears that there have been serveral simular complaints.
