1 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/19/2021

Vehicle has only 29,370 miles driven. The right rear brake lining has undue wear at 3 mm. The left rear brake lining measures 5-6 mm. During routine servicing the Mazda technician discovered abnormal brake wear. Mazda dealership recommends replacement of both rear calipers. Mazda corporation is unwilling to help. It appears maxda Cx-5 is having problems with their epb and is unwilling to admit it.

2 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/07/2021

The electronic parking brake on my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 started acting strange a few weeks ago. At first it would not disengage after starting the car, but would do so after a couple of restarts. Then it started engaging slightly while driving, with no indications. Stopping and restarting the engine a few times would usually release it. A couple of days ago this happened and the brake would not disengage after several restarts and I was going to call a tow truck. It disengaged after about 30 minutes. As I understand it Mazda knows that the rear caliper is defective (see technical service bulletin r052/16c). This should be a recall item because this is not safe.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/22/2020

While driving approx. 40 mph on a state road, my tpms warning light went on. At first I thought it was a simple tire pressure issue, but then I began to smell burning. I stopped my car and saw smoke coming from my rear right (passenger side) wheel. I promptly brought the car to a 3rd party mechanic and they informed me the caliper remained engaged and my rotors were overheating. They tried contacting Mazda dealerships and 3rd party sources for either new or rebuilt caliper but the part was out of stock and on backorder with no estimated date when it would be replenished. My car is still unrepaired and I cannot drive it as the excessive heating of the rotor could disable my braking ability. This seems to be a common issue with other Cx-5 models.

6 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/18/2020

Rear drivers side caliper becomes stuck when electric brake when disengaged causing over heating of rotor and excess heat to the wheel resulting in premature wear of rotor and brake pads and also could lose breaking capability I have made an appt with dealership to resolve issue on July 6th.

7 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 05/10/2020

Was driving with family on highway when car started to feel wobbly and I began smelling the distinct smell of burning brakes. I pulled over at the closes store (. 5 miles) . I then noticed the rear, passenger caliper was smoking. I later found out (after a few hundred dollars and hours of labor) this is a known issue with the rear calipers siezing. . . Apparently this isn't considered "safety"?!?!. If I wasn't mechanically inclined I may have kept driving. My sort ride was enough to heat up and loosen 2 of my lug nuts. If that isn't a safety hazard then I don't know what is.

8 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2017 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

Hello, this car was leased back in oct 2017 as a brand new car from garden city Mazda (NY). Six months ago (July 2019), we brought the car to the service to check the huge vibrations when breaking. They found a left rear break caliper was leaking and failed caused plate (rotor) and pad damage. Car was only done 5731 miles. They have replaced the left rear rotor, pads and caliper. Then resurfaced (rr) rotor and pads. After 6 months today (Jan 3rd 2020), we had to take the car to the service because of the vibrations re-occurring when breaking as it was very concerning. Car is done 9744 miles to date. And this time it was both front break plates (rotors) and pad are worn out. This car is almost daily driven (4-5 days a week) and have low mileage due to the low distance (+-10 miles/day) it was driven per day. And we had to change the breaks twice within less than 10k miles. Mazda service and Mazda (manufacturer) claims this is due to regular wear and tear and car must be sitting there for a long. Which I do not believe is a valid statement from Mazda as an experience car owner and a driver. I had other cars that were sitting on my drive way longer than this car and never had this many break issues. Break failures are very dangerous and put everyone at risk. My concern is that the break components used in 2017 Mazda cx5 is not up to us consumer safety standards and not suitable for the weather conditions where the vehicles were sold. Really appreciate if you can investigate this issue further and I hope that will help so many consumers using these vehicles today and future. . Read more...

9 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/23/2019

At 15k miles the driver's side rear brake caliper failed, causing the brake to drag and overheat during a 400 mile holiday roadtrip. By the time the problem was discovered by the elderly owners, the rear pads were worn down to the backing plates and the rotors were heavily scored. There were no warning lights illuminated or other indication alerting the driver to the problem. This is a known issue with the rear calipers and electric parking brake (epb) given the tsbs that Mazda has published on the matter as well as the number of complaints online and with the NHTSA. Mazda replaced the failed driver's side caliper under warranty but declined to cover the damaged pads and rotor caused by their defective assembly even after escalting the issue to corporate. This should be a safety recall but Mazda would rather jeopardize the safety of their customer (by not proactively replacing the passenger side caliper) and charge them $500 for a brake job to correct collateral damage caused by their defective parts. We have been long-time loyal customers of Mazda but they have acted unethically in this instance and did not fulfill their warranty claim in good faith.

10 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/13/2019

11 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/26/2019

Purchased used 2013 Mazda Cx-5 in December 2015. April 2017 had rear brake pads and rotors replaced due to rust. Screeching began, again, end of June 2019 while driving normal speeds. Continued to get worse, braking and not braking at any speed. Mechanic stated that the rear pads and rotors needed to be replaced due to rust, with the left-side being extremely worse than the right. Said the caliper might have gone bad. Couldn't explain how this would happen in 2 years. Did not mention any notices for this from Mazda or how to prevent this from happening again.

12 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/24/2019

The emergency parking brake fails to properly release causing major damage to calipers, rotors, ad pads.

13 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/21/2018

At 31,234 miles my mechanic said that my brake pads and rotars and tires needed to be replaced. When we was replacing them, the emergency brake and calipers seized up and he had to order parts (which took a while because of the number of issues with the emergency brake on my model of car). He said that the problems with the emergency brakes likely also caused wear and tear on my regular breaks and caused them to need to be replaced early.

14 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/24/2017

The contact owns a 2016 Mazda Cx-5. While driving 25 mph, the emergency indicator illuminated and beeped. The contact noticed an abnormal burning odor and observed smoke from the rear passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer (Mazda of olympia, 2201 carriage st sw, olympia, wa 98502) where it was diagnosed that the caliper needed to be replaced; however, the parts were on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 5,000.

The contact owns a 2014 Mazda Cx-5. While reversing the vehicle, the brakes made noise. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that water entered and caused the calipers to rust. The brakes were destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure was not remedied. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.

16 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/27/2015

Without any advance warning my rear brakes began screeching. I am now operating with rear brakes that are metal on metal. I spoke with the service manager at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle and he said it's normal for brakes to wear out and it is probably not from a stuck caliper. This began happening one week ago during normal usage.

17 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

The contact owns a 2013 Mazda Cx-5. When the brakes were engaged, an abnormal noise emitted from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it diagnosed that the rear passenger side caliper, the rear driver side and passenger side rotors and brake pads needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 31,000.

18 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 05/21/2015

I first started hearing this screeching noise back in may 2015, after which I took it to the dealership thinking whatever it was could be covered under warranty. They came back saying that it was due to not having any rear brake pads left and my rotors were severely damaged. Unfortunately, this was due to normal wear and tear and not covered under warranty. After fixing this, in August 2015, I started to hear the noise again. Took it back to the same dealership complaining about the same noise. This time, they stated that it was my front brake pads. Got this fixed as well. Now it is September, and I hear the same exact screeching noise as I heard in may. I decided to have it checked at another dealership but unfortunately, due to how the prior dealership used an air impact wrench to put on my wheel locks, they were not able to remove them. It actually stripped the key and now I am stuck with another problem to fix. While there, we asked if this might be the reason behind the screeching that we hear, but the mechanic stated that there is a service bulletin out on the rear calipers, etc and to fix it if a customer complains. Now my complaint is how is a customer supposed to be aware of this if it is not made known to us. . . And instead, the dealerships trick us into repeatedly returning to have it checked, taking time out of our busy work schedules. I also don't agree with at only 30k, I had to have all my brake pads changed already! all the other cars I've had, I did at around 50k.

19 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/18/2015

I took my car in for routine oil change, new wiper blades and wheel alignment. I was told by firestone mechanic that I needed back brakes and the calipers are "sticking. " I was told not to drive the car - it is unsafe!! when I called the dealership they informed me not under warranty?! a car -- less than 2 years old with 32,000 miles on it needs new back brakes and calipers??? I think not! taking it to the dealer on Wednesday to check it out in full. Not happy! if able to update on here, I will do so.

20 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5
