2 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/25/2020

Driving the vehicle causes the rear brakes to get hot. This happened multiple times in September (around 40,000 miles), and I took my Cx-5 in for service. The technicians did not find anything operating incorrectly, lubricated the brakes, and returned my vehicle. When I got my state safety inspection, I was informed that my rear brakes were passable, but pretty crummy looking because of heat damage. Because we were locked down (due to coronavirus) I waited a bit and just recently had them replaced. Now that my rear brakes have new pads and rotors, the rear brake issue is happening again, specifically on the driver's side this time. After about 15 minutes of highway driving, the vehicle began to shake in the rear and the tire pressure monitor indicated that there was a problem. I took it in to the dealer again, and they told me the rear brakes are operating normally. However, on my drive home (18 miles on the highway), the rear of the vehicle began shaking again, so I knew the issue was not resolved. I checked the temperature of the driver's side rear brake rotor, and it was over 400 degrees (the other rotors were around 150, see page 9 of attached document). I contacted Mazda customer service about this issue, and they told me that because the dealer can't detect an issue, there is nothing they can do. Mazda has issued tsbs related to the electronic parking brake for my vehicle, but I believe their diagnostic steps are not sufficient to detect all cases of the issue. Their diagnostic steps are all related to low-speed driving, but my issue only presents itself after driving on the highway for a prolonged period.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/24/2019

Intermittently, the rear electronic parking brakes do not fully release. This causes the rear brake pads to wear on the rotors. This in turn results in premature brake wear, excessive heat, and a burning smell. This has happened multiple times in all different weather conditions.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/24/2019

At times the breaks become unresponsive to pressure and the pedal goes all the way to the floor. The breaks have to be pumped it order to get them to catch. So, I took the car to a repair shop and they changed the break pads and bleed the lines. However, after a test drive the issue happened to the mechanic again. After checking the break system again, they found that the vacuum pump is malfunctioning. There was a recall for other Mazda Cx-5s in my model year. But my VIN number does not fall in the recall. My auto repair person stated that this is something that shouldn't happen, and is extremely dangerous.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/02/2019

My tire pressure indicator light was triggered on when I drove the car for about 40 mph. I stopped at a parking lot and I noticed the rear right wheel was literally smoking. Later I went to a local shop and I was told the brake was overheated on the rear right side. My local shop replaced the rotor and pads, however, the overheat problem kept showing up on that right rear side. I did some research online and it seems to be a common problem with the parking brake dragging for 2016 cx5. So I stopped using the parking brake and the overheating problem was gone. However, the parking brake is still defective and causes overheat if used.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/02/2019

I have owned this vehicle for three years and the power brakes have failed three separate times. Each time this happens the pedal is extremely hard to push and will not go down. Each time I was driving in city type traffic. I have taken the car to jim ellis Mazda in marietta GA. They were unable to duplicate the problem and recommended a brake fluid flush having said the fluid was dirty. Also said I needed rear brake pads due to wear but they were fine. I did replace them with new as a precaution as I am a retired automotive technician. I will attach a photo of the pads. The car has 49000 miles on it and was purchased certified pre owned in October 2016. My wife is afraid to drive this car now since we don't know when this may occur again. Each time the brakes failed it was hot weather and the occurrence was sept 2nd 2019.

7 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/08/2019

Electric parking break (epb) warning light start blinking after the release of the brake. I lived in a warm tropical weather. In my understanding this function works on cold weather. Problem persists intermittently. If vehicle turned off, problem "disappears" but appears again when the break button was released. Weeks later the car started to activate the Smart city break alarm when moving in my neighborhood and in a city street with no reason, suddenly, and bringing a safety issue. Also started to make strange noises related to the brake, similar when the brakes or pads get wet and making the car forced to be moved when pushing the accelerator pedal, making the vehicle difficult to move, no matter break is released and turning it slow and vague. An electronic diagnostic report was made and shows the following codes : code c2005 (electric park brake motor gear unit (rh) circuit malfunction code c112a (incorrect electric parking brake motor gear unit position) code c2006 (electric parking brake motor gear unit (lh) circuit malfunction.

8 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2017 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

Rotors began showing signs of irregular wearing at 15k miles, causing the vehicle to shake uncontrollably when braking. The dealership indicated that this was normal wear and tear and inclement weather. However, there is a vast number of reports online with identical issues, occurring around 25k miles, which appear to be related to defective brake pads out of the factory.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

Over the lifetime of my vehicle, I have replaced my rear pads and rotors three times (have also replaced front pads and rotors two times during the lifetime of the car). The most two recent occurrences were in November 2017 and April 2019, where both the rear brakes pads and rotors were completely replaced both times. The mileage in between both repairs was only 22,326. I have called with my concerns to the dealership, and they explain that there are so many factors that it is difficult to say what the issue could be. I take care of my vehicle, it is always repaired and serviced on time, has frequent car washes, including the wheel and undercarriage area. I have an approximate half hour commute with only highway miles, because we have an additional car for our local errands. It seems as though this is a problem with a lot of 2013 Mazda Cx-5 owners, not juts myself, as I've discovered from many vehicle complaint boards online who speak of the same exact issue of having to constantly replace prematurely worn brake pads and rotors. I personally feel that there is definitely something more to this recurring issue than what I am actually being told, and feel as though it should be investigated once and for all. Thank you for your time and assistance.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/12/2018

Excessive rear brake wear. Rear pads worn down to metal backing plate at 20,900 miles with no audible break wear indicator. Front brakes 70% worn at same milage.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/22/2018

My fiance started to hear a noise coming from my rear when brakes while I was driving. I also noticed that my car would rock when I took the parking brake off. I was told that my rear brake pads were worn down, the rear passenger side had slightly more wear then the the rear driver side. New pads were installed around 32,000 miles. About 8,000 miles later I started to hear the same noise again, this time it was worse. I took in again to get looked at and the rear passenger pads were completely worn down, while the rear driver pads barely had any wear to them. I was told it was most likely a malfunctioning caliber. Mazda ran my VIN and stated that is came up as a TSB but stated that I was out of warranty and that they would not cover it. I would like to report this because I am afraid that when I drive my vehicle my brakes will malfunction causing me get into an accident which may result in death.

12 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/04/2018

When replacing rear drivers side rear brakes and rotor, noticed excessive wear compared to passenger side. Replaced pads and rotors on both drivers and passengers rear. Twice since the replacement, the rear brakes have stayed engaged on the drivers side, causing excessive heating, smoking, etc to the brakes, wheels, and tires. Suspect parking brake on driver side not disengaging. Have stopped using parking brake. Have not had repeat occurrance since stopped using parking brake.

13 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 05/12/2018

Car is a 2016. 5 Mazda Cx-5 with approx 12,000 miles. Car began making a grinding sound while driving; made an appointment with Mazda to look into the problem. Dropped off the vehicle may 11, 2018, picked up the vehicle may 12, 2018. Service technician stated it was the vehicles brakes, which are not covered under warranty, and would need to be paid out of pocket. I was surprised to hear I needed new brakes due to the low mileage and age of the vehicle so I brought the car to my personal mechanic, to get a second opinion, before having any expensive repairs performed by Mazda. Local mechanic (midas shop) said that the rear brakes were entirely worn down (outer pads only) and had worn down so much, they had damaged the rear brake rotors while the rear inner pads appeared to have minimal wear consistent with the age of the vehicle. Front brakes also looked to have minimal wear consistent with the age of the vehicle. Midas recommended the rear brake pads and rotors be changed immediately for safety purposes; and commented how unusual this brake problem seemed. Upon getting home, I searched the internet and found TSB #04-005-16-3217; NHTSA #10092486 (amongst others) that tell of a similar issue. Upon going back to Mazda with the brakes and rotors that had prematurely failed and explaining the TSB's online, and requesting a refund for the money spent at the local shop; I was told there was nothing they could do. I just feel that Mazda should have replaced my brakes and rotors upon my initial visit, knowing that this appears to be a common issue in cars with low mileage.

14 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/29/2018

The front brakes on my car would not pass PA state inspection because of severe rust on the piston side of both front rotors. The outer surfaces of the rotors were fine. All of the pads were at 50% for wear. The vehicle is three years old, bought new, and has 38,000 miles of mixed driving. The dealer contacted the Mazda district manager and he refused to do anything about it and considered what I had as normal wear. I replaced the rotors and pads myself and was surprised at the improvement in stopping distance. Since this was happening over time, I was not aware of my loss in braking. After I replaced my brakes and personally called michael konzel, the Mazda district manager, he told me that this was considered normal and not a Mazda issue. I offered to send him pictures, but he said that he did not need them. The vehicle was stationary at the time, but driven daily.

15 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/30/2017

Rear brake pads and rotors show severe wear at 14k miles. Rotors have visible wear marks and corrosion. Braking function impaired and pedal must be deeply pressed to achieve deceleration. Dealer said this is normal wear and tear and replaced pads. However even with new pads, braking is still mushy. 2015 and 2014 model years had similar problem / TSB. Appears that manufacturing defect continued into 2016 model year.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Grinding and squeaking in rear brake pads and rotors only. Car has 26,000 miles on it with visible marks on rear rotors only! noise happens while driving or braking.

17 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

Car has 6379 miles. Brakes grabbing and car jerks at times when peddle applied. Car has 20% brake pad lr 20% rr 50%rf 50% lf. Took into Mazda dealer and the solution was to replace pads. With 6379 miles driven mostly on highway is this a faulty pad product? happens at low speeds when stopping. Started 06/17 and still happening.

18 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/18/2016

My rear brake pads had to be replaced with only 33000 miles on the car. The front ones have not been replaced yet. There is a recall tbs 04-003/14 on the brakes but Mazda did not honor it because they said the service manager said the pads wore out evenly. If defective they should wear out unevenly. Huh? why did the brake pads wear out so fast?.

19 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/03/2015

Rear brakes (rotors and brake pads) prematurely worn out at ~35k this looks like a design issues as there is a TSB for it, do to rust formation that makes the brake pads stick. Mazda should have been pro-active. All they needed to do was to remove rusted spots and apply some grease. Now I have a case open with Mazda customer service to see if they will cover it as warranty item.

20 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/04/2015

Driving on a paved road when I heard a very loud squealing noise coming from the rear wheels. Checked the wheels when I got home , and discovered premature wear on rear brake pads and rotors. Pads were worn down, and the rotors were grooved the rear right side was really bad . Looked for a recall notice, and found nothing, so I replaced them. I talked to the service manager at the local Mazda dealership on June 121th, and he informed me that there was a notice sent to the dealers to look for this problem if there was a customer complaint. I asked why the notice was not sent to the vehicle owner's, and he had no answer.

21 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/06/2014

I have a braking issue. When I brake my car at low speed, I rarely have any issue and my brake works well. But if I drive at a higher speed (>55mph) and brake relatively fast, I will feel like my foot is pushing on both brake and gas pedals, and my car will not slow down as it¿s supposed to. It feels like there is no significant force of friction between the brake pads and drums. The feeling of braking is not smooth either as if I was pushing the gas pedal at the same time. I almost hit the cars before me twice. This issue can be resolved with quick brake pedal relief and subsequent stepping on again. I may need to repeat this effort several times before it works normally. I believe there is some mechanical problem with it. I drive very carefully on high way now.

22 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/19/2014

A week ago I started hearing a metal grinding sound on the rear passenger side of my Mazda Cx-5. My car is only a year an a half old. I brought it to my mechanic and he said that the rotor is completely gone and I needed new brake pads because of it. However, he couldn't locate my parts anywhere. It seems that all the local Mazda dealerships didn't have them and all the aftermarket places claimed that Mazda company had bought them all back. My mechanic also said it was odd that it was only one side. I have been researching and found out that there are many other complaints out there for the same problem! so dangerous! the reason my husband bought me this car was because it was safe and I wouldn't have any problems. There is no reason a new car should need new rotors and brake pads! to see more complaints go to this website, repairpal. Com/premature-rear-brake-failure-705. I hope they recall this soon! in the meantime my car has not been fixed because there is a nation wide back order on the part!.

23 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/23/2014

Brake pads were worn through at 18 months. It was never caught on inspection and the mechanic said they would have failed completely soon. There is no reason a car should wear through the brakes in a year and a half. Mazda did not care.

24 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

I started hearing a metal grinding sound on the read driver side of my Mazda cx5. I was told the rotors and pad were gone and needed replaced. The parts were not available and I was driving on used pads for about 1 month and they started to make the same grinding sound. I did not feel safe driving this car with the brakes in the condition.
